    AQUALLERY

A relative newcomer to the M50 block, New York-based Aquallery set up shop in Shanghais pre-eminent art district, 50 Moganshan Lu, in 2009. !ats not to say they havent made quite a splash on entering the fast-moving waters of Chi-nas contemporary art scene. On the contrary, theyve been rather busy doing their bit to promote it with the launch of Chinas Next Top Artist, a program aimed at #nding, supporting and promoting new talents and sponsoring some of Chinas biggest contemporary art events including the Shanghai Biennale and China Next Biennale.

    M97

A little more discreet than some of its feistier neighbors in the M50 art district, M97 is a demure, 300-square-meter gallery whose raison detre is photography. One of the #rst of Shanghais galleries to commit to this glorious and multi-faceted art form, M97 has been the go-to space for some of Chinas most in-teresting and innovative photographic works since its inception in 2006, with exhibitions ranging from hard-hitting social critiques, to the surreal, to the hands-down breathtakingly beautiful in print.

    M 50

!e epicenter of modern art in Shanghai, M50, a.k.a. 50 Moganshan Lu, is a collection of old industrial buildings that have found a new lease of life as studios, workshops, galleries and design agencies peopled by Shanghais most creative folk. Just a few minutes north of the citys Suzhou Creek, an area that is undergoing something of a faceli$ itself, M50 is the place to head to discover the rapidly developing contemporary Chinese art scene. It may be Shanghais best-known artistic community but the creative energy that "ows through its industrial chic hallways delivers the thrill of new discovery to any visit.

    TIANZIFANG

An enclave of hip boutiques and cafs situated in an old Shanghai lane, Tianzi-fang is also known by the alternative moniker Taikang Lu. !e ever-expanding warren of bohemia has been a favorite expat haunt and hidden gem for the citys coolest kids since circa 2005. It has since come to the attention of the Man and seen some major development in recent years, including a shiny new shopping mall and Metro station in its name. !ats not to say the charm has been lost, simply discovered and organized. !e narrow cobbles and grey and red brick Shikumen buildings remain a top spot for whiling away the weekend hours, people watching or browsing funky hand made jewelry and o'eat souvenirs.
