The embroidery on these bags is called ‘Phulkari’ work, and originates from Punjab. It used to be known as flower working which once upon a time was a term used for all embroidery. Embroidered by women for their own use and use of other family members, it was therefore purely a domestic art which not only satisfied their inner urge for creation, but brought colour into day to day life. In a way it was a true folk art, and these accessories have a real ‘folky’ feel.
