Framework

In July we were delighted be appointed to this framework which covers projects valued up to £350k and is focused on improving facilities at Virgin Trains locations along the whole of the West Coast route. This is a multi-contractor framework that has the potential to run until the end of the Virgin Trains franchise.

Building upon our strong reputation in the Healthcare Sector, May brought news of our appointment to this refurbishment framework, covering 38 hospital sites across the UK for a period of 3 years. Typical works focus on refurbishment of reception areas, bedrooms and consulting rooms.

Our most recent framework success saw our appointment to the three UK mainland frameworks for the Post Office. The mainland frameworks cover fit-out services to the Crown Office network nationwide. The only SME to win places on any of the frameworks, the appointment builds on our accomplished reputation in the retail sector.

June saw our appointment to this extensive framework that assists public sector bodies access best value, quality solutions for new projects. The scope of works includes refurbishment of learning environments such as science laboratories and home economics facilities, remodelling of buildings and refurbishment of sports changing facilities.

Key Clients

2013 saw us begin work at The Belfry, the internationally acclaimed golf course & resort. Following our appointment to undertake ‘The Market Place’ project we were mandated to undertake the flagship ‘Green Zone’ project. The scheme is around £3m in value and consists of new reception area, bars, restaurants, commercial areas and new entrance works.

Our relationship with Mansion Group, one of the leading providers of student accommodation nationally, continues to grow. 2013 saw us add a further three projects to our existing portfolio with schemes in Cardiff, Birmingham and Glasgow. This brings our total of Mansion projects to seven nationally, and further increases demand for our services in this area.

Having completed a number of projects together in the past, Dudley MBC have continued to work with us to help improve the standard of their schools. During the summer we completed the refurbishment of Sledmere Primary School and are currently insulating and improving the roofs at Dormston School which will be completed in time for Christmas.

Coba Plastics completed their hat trick of Shaylor projects in 2013 with two new projects in Leicestershire - an extension to an existing industrial unit amenity block over two storeys and a new build warehouse with integral office accommodation. We previously constructed a warehouse for Coba at their HQ site in Fleckney, which was extremely well received by the client.

Awards

Alumnus of the Year: Enterprise and Leadership

Best Community Building :Shree Sanatan Day Care Centre

In June CEO Stephen Shaylor (centre) won the ‘Enterprise and Leadership’ award at the University of Wolverhampton’s Business Achievements Awards. The award celebrates the success of a graduate who has made an important contribution to the local or national community through an enterprising business venture, or has improved the way business is done through innovative leadership. Speaking about his success, Stephen said “I am delighted to be the recipient of the Alumnus of the Year award for Enterprise and Leadership, and look forward to collaborating with the University through business initiatives moving forward”.

Our Awards season started off in May by taking home the ‘Best Community Building’ award at the LABC (EM) Building Excellence Awards. Winners are not judged on architectural beauty, but on the ‘excellence’ shown from a construction and technical Building Control point of view. The project was put forward by Bernard Saunders of Leicester County Council Building Control who explained in his Entry “The tight nature of the site, level differences and dilapidated adjoining structures presented many challenges before and during the works. When problems did come apparent, Shaylor Group worked to ensure they could be resolved as early as possible”.

Awards

Partnership Award:Tan-Y-Mynydd Trout Fishery

Integration and Collaborative Working:Western Power Distribution

June also saw celebrations at the Acivico (Building Consultancy) Built in Quality Awards where we were named as one of the winners of the Partnership Award. The accolade came for the Tan-Y-Mynydd Trout Fishery project in North Wales, which involved the innovative and eco-friendly conversion of a fishing lodge into a residential house, requiring close collaboration with the Environment Agency Wales and Conwy CBC. Designed and constructed to reflect the local architectural vernacular, the house now nestles neatly adjacent to the trout fishing lakes and provides employment for a local person.

The summer ended with winning the ‘Integration and Collaborative Working’ award at the Constructing Excellence 2013 Awards. The awards are organised around the United Kingdom by the ten regional Centres of Constructing Excellence. In the West Midlands, the Awards are highly regarded and attract entries from leading construction industry organisations, right across the region. Our programme of work for Western Power Distribution across five project sites saw the whole project team work together to capture and then recycle lessons learned and working method improvements.

Project Highlights

Bank HouseRefurbishment and Improvements

King Edward’s SchoolSixth Form Centre and Classrooms

Our Birmingham office enjoyed working close to home at this iconic city centre location. The project involved the complete refurbishment of the entrance foyer, three floors and common areas including construction of basement shower facilities and lift refurbishments. Works also included the construction of a new structural glazed entrance area, which was phased to enable active use of the reception area and desk and at least one main entrance door at one time. Existing tenants encountered minimal disruption thanks to careful phasing, clear signage and regular newsletters.

We returned to King Edward’s School to build a new two storey classroom block. The teaching environment was maintained within the surrounding buildings for theduration of the contract. The works also included theconstruction of an additional storey to the existing single storey IT block (accommodating the new VI Form Centre). A number of existing associated classrooms were upgraded, corridors refurbished and a courtyard area formed. During the summer school vacation, fourexisting classrooms were converted into three new laboratories, each with a practical (wet) area and a theory(dry) area.

Project Highlights

The Belfry‘The Green Zone’

Ricoh ArenaCreation of 41 hotel bedrooms

Currently in the final stages, this refurbishment project within the existing Belfry Hotel has formed the ‘Green Zone’ - a new bar, restaurant, market place and entrance. The hotel, car park, service road, service corridors and loading areas remained fully operational during the works. Close liaison with the Hotel Manager allowed us to carry out the works in a manner that avoided any disruption to the operation of the hotel andcustomers. Additionally, works were programmed to suit the hotel calendar with dates and timescales agreed in advance. All of these works were carriedout in phases within an existing live hotel.

In one of our most complex projects, we carried out alterations and modifications to the arena to form 41 new ensuite bedrooms for De Vere Hotels. The rooms were created within two areas of the arena with the whole of the works carried out in a live hotel environment. 34 bedrooms were constructed over an area of the 2nd floor that was previously a gymnasium. To allow all rooms to fit in the zone a mezzanine floor was constructed and all the structural and flooring materials were brought in through a gap at the second floor in the curtain walling formed by the temporary removal of glazed panels.

Shaylor Awards

June saw us reach our target in a pledge towards an ECLS blood analyser machine for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Funds were raised during the previous eighteen months from a wide number of initiatives including charity football matches, a sponsored bike ride and in-house competitions. On behalf of the hospital, Helen Bell (pictured with CEO Stephen Shaylor) commented “We are so grateful to the team at Shaylor Group for raising such a substantial sum of money. Everyone involved should be very proud and this donation will make a huge difference to the patients we look after every day.”

2013 saw the launch of the ‘Shaylor Awards’ where we acknowledge exceptional individual and team performance and accomplishments. Presented as part of our biannual company-wide SiteLink conference held at The Belfry, award categories included Team of the Year, Unsung Hero Award, Career Achievement Award, Health, Safety & Environment Leader of the Year and The Frederick Shaylor Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement.
