NEWS AND VIEWS.
Once again our sincere good wishes are extended to the team for success to-day. Your vocal support will assist them greatly, so give our lads all the encouragement you can. I do know that they will appreciate your efforts to spur them on. t
GOOD LUCK, GATESHEAD !
A welcome is extended to the Bolton Supporters who have travelled up for to-day's match. I trust they will see and enjoy a good game.
I appeal to the Gateshead Supporters present, "Why not support your team all the time as you are doing to-day?" Only your continued support can bring success to the Gateshead A.F.C., which it richly deserves, and can have, if you support them in league games as strongly as you have in their cup-ties. OUR VISITORS ... ) Although we have had visits from
Manchester City, West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool, the appearance of any first division side is still something of a novelty at Redheugh Park.
When the team is Bolton Wanderers and the occasion the sixth round of the F.A. Cup, the combination adds up to the greatest attraction ever staged at the Teams' enclosure, and it is in this spirit that we extend a hearty welcome this afternoon to our friends from Lancashire.
Bolton are one of the oldest league clubs in the country, having changed their name from Christ Church to Bolton Wanderers in August, 1877.
Their moments of triumph have been many, but few will deny that they reached their zenith during the six years from 1923 to 1929 when thev made three successful appearances at Wembley.
They had twice reached the final before, both times at Crystal Palace where they went down to Notts County 4-1 in 1894 and to Manchester City by a lone goal in 1904.
Their first success was gained in that never to be forgotten first Wembley final in April 1923, when they beat West Ham United 2-0 with goals by David Jack and J. R. Smith. That was the occasion when the crowd broke into the ground, invaded the pitch and delayed the start some 40 minutes.
It was estimated that 150,000 spectators were present and the chaos created led to future finals being all ticket affairs.
Three years later Bolton returned to avenge an earlier defeat by Manchester
City and after another three years, accounted for Portsmouth by two clear goals.
Although these notes are written before the announcement of the Bolton team, latest indications are that they will be at full strength, which means that our boys will face five players of international rank, centre half Barrass and forwards Moir, Lofthouse, Hassail and Langton.
In Moir, Lofthouse and Hassall, Bolton possess the most dangerous inside trio in soccer to-day. In Cup & League games they have scored among them 40 goals as follows:- Moir 16, Lofthouse 17 and Hassall 7.
Wingers Hughes and Langton have shared six while right half Wheeler, whom our team will remember playing for Tranmere, has a hat-trick to his credit in one game at centre forward against Blackpool.
Those of our supporters who saw the clash between Tom Callender and West Bromwich Albion's Walsh in the only other all ticket game at Redheugh Park four years ago, are eagerly looking forward to the meeting between the Gateshead captain and England's all-action leader, Nat Lofthouse.
Certainly the battle between the Bolton inside trio and Gateshead's half backs looks like deciding the issue. If we win we shall have the honour of being the first Division III (North) side to reach the semi-final, while if Bolton succeed, all we can do is wish them the best of luck in their progress to Wembley.
