I help to keep the 175-year-old ship Brunel’s SS Great
Britain safe, by stopping the metal structure from rusting.
This is done by keeping the air around the ship as dry as
a desert. There are computer-controlled dehumidifying
machines which blow dried air around the ship, with lots
of sensors all controlled by code and using as little
energy as possible.

I work on commissions introducing sculpture into the
environment, built and natural. The works are in relief on
buildings or three dimensions. I usually work in Brick or
common construction materials. The works reflect the
history, context or aspirations of a place or community.
My workplace is full of clay, pigments, tools, bricks,
plaster and wood.Creativity .............................. 96Communication ..................... 51Collaboration ........................ 43Digital knowledge ................ 83Hands-on practical skills ... 96Reading and writing ............ 49Sustainability knowledge .. 51Using numbers ..................... 71

I create, invent and make artwork for museums and
exhibitions around the world. I collaborate with
fabricators including glass blowers. The different skills
and languages of crafts people enable me to create what
is in my imagination. I had a place to study engineering at
University but switched to art.

I make wooden masts and ‘spars’ for boats. ‘Spars’ is the
word for all poles and masts above the deck. They pull up
and hold sails and have names like booms, spinnaker poles
and mizzen masts! I make them out of strong Spruce or
Fir wood. I glue long sections of wood together. Then I
plane and sand, and finish by varnishing them ready for
installing.Creativity .............................. 90Communication ..................... 39Collaboration ........................ 56Digital knowledge ................ 22Hands-on practical skills ... 98Reading and writing ............ 67Sustainability knowledge .. 78Using numbers ..................... 90
