“Father, marami pong mga pari at ilang mga Obispo ang nagrerecomenda o nagcriticize sa mga tumatakbong kandidadto, pinapayagan ba sila ng simbahan?”

This question shows the degree of the faithful’s confusion nowadays on the legitimacy of the Catholic ministers’ involvement in political affairs. To whatextent should priests and bishops get involved in the coming elections?

Let’s be clear, first, about certain facts!Firstly, priests and bishops participate in

the coming elections by casting their votes, thereby, exercising their rights as citizens of this country. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “Submission to authority

and co-responsibility for the common good make it morally obligatory to pay taxes, to exercise the right to vote, and to defend one’s country” (CCC, 2240).

Secondly, the Church clearly prohibits priests and bishops to run for public office as it is “unbecoming to their state” (Canon 285). They must not actively campaign, endorse or publicly support particular candidates or political parties.

In the same manner, priests and bishops are also advised not to tell the people who not to vote for. Either to endorse or to oppose a political candidate or party is divisive; hence, it is “unbecoming” of Church ministers who are supposed to gather, not to scatter, the flock.

But I agree with Fr. Dwight Longenecker in his article entitled “Should a Priest Comment on Politics?” published in his blog, Patheos, on February 22, 2016, in saying that “Maybe we shouldn’t get involved in politics, but we can certainly comment on morality. Indeed, it is our duty to comment on the morality or immorality of certain issues.” If I may quote lengthily this priest-blogger:

“If a party or candidate supports abortion, genocide or euthanasia we must speak out about it. If a candidate or party supports indiscriminate deportation or incarceration we should speak out about it. If a party or candidate supports torture, killing of innocent civilians and indiscriminate

TRIVIA CATECHESISANG FLORES DE MAYO AT

SANTACRUZAN

CBCP issued Wise as Serpents, Innocent as Doves last December 2015.

In sum:1. Vote for those who come to serve and

not to be served, like Christ.

2. There are no perfect candidates: there is a difference between one who has done wrong, and is willing to amend and one who is stubborn.

3. Choice should not depend on surveys.

4. Do not vote for one who (1) is in favor of banning religion in public life, and (2) has a program supporting “abortion, euthanasia, the return of the death penalty, divorce and the dilution of the character of Christian marriage.”

5. You may be open to vote for a good leader who is non-Catholic.

6. Be suspicious of one who only spends time destroying a rival, but has nothing good to offer.

WISE AS SERPENTS, INNOCENT AS DOVES

(Mt.10:16)A Guide to Catholic Voters

As the rhetoric and the noise traditionally associated with Philippine politics and elections reach higher levels of intensity, we wish to offer some guidelines to our Catholic voters deriving from the moral teachings of the Church.

CBCP VOTERS GUIDE -- FOR THE 2016 ELECTIONS

A DAWN PROCESSION OF VIRGEN DELA SOLEDAD

TAGUIG CITY – Our Lady of the Poor Parish (Ina ngmgaDukha) held it’s very first “Virgen dela Soledad” Procession: a special devotion practiced in honor of Nuestra Senora de la Soledad or Our Lady of Solitude. This devotion was introduced to console Our Lady in her solitude on Holy Saturday, and is akin to the devotion practiced among the Servites on Good Friday called the Desolata.

The Church of Our Lady of Solitude, which dates back to 1692, has an interesting history.Legend has it that a mule driver, guiding his burro train through the streets of Oaxaca, suddenly discovered he had an extra animal carrying

a huge box on its back.Curious, officials opened the box and found an image of the Blessed Virgin of Solitude; hence, a church was built. Tourists who come to Oaxaca find an enormous boulder at the entrance – marking the spot where the burro died from the weight of the box. Our Lady of Solitude, patroness of Oaxaca, became the protector of sailors; and, in addition to elaborate gowns fashioned by the women of the city, the Virgin’s gold crown is bejeweled with gifts of shimmering pearls from seafarers.

The procession was initiated by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Mark Emman H. Sese, and,in spite of it being held at dawn, was warmly accepted by parishioners.

PRAYER FOR THE2016 ELECTIONS

Lord, You know the hearts of all men, You know our innermost

thoughts and intentions, and You know our strengths and the span

and reach of our abilities. All authority comes from You, and it is You who guide and bless hu-man authority. We ask You, Lord, to give us the right leaders for our time, that will govern this country in reflection to how You govern all things. May Your good purposes be fulfilled, and may we be one

with Your cause.Amen.

or party supports the widespread and indiscriminate use of capital punishment we should speak out about it. If a candidate or party supports the oppression of the poor, an unfair wage and destruction of the family we should speak out about it. If a candidate or party supports the breakdown of marriage, sexual immorality and moral corruption of the young we should speak out about it.”

In other words, while Catholic clergy are advised not to actively interfere with political affairs, they are, not only allowed, but even expected to shed light on moral issues involving these affairs. So when priests and bishops comment on politics, it should not be about political concerns like who to vote for or not. Instead, they should comment on moral issues affecting the Catholic faithful’s exercise of their political rights.

As Fr. Longenecker rightly points out, “Commenting on the morality of issues is something a priest is called to. When there is evil in the world, he is called to exercise a prophetic ministry. This is not being ‘political’; it is being human. It is being Catholic.”
