Today’s Highlights
Gurgaon plays host to 2014 SHRM India Annual conference and exposition
In a multi-cultural work place today
there are chances of up to four different g e n e r a t i o n s working side-by-side. Manoj Biswas, Head HR at Accenture, while leading a panel discussion on ‘Transforming the Future of Work in a Technology World’ gave participants a peek into the distinct attitudes, behaviors, expectations, habits and motivational buttons of each generation and how it becomes essential for HR leaders to bridge this gap using technology as internet using population is around 2.4 Billion and growing.“Many HR leaders continue to segment their workforces by age – Baby Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y etc. In today’s shift to a digital business, they should focus their attention around the
five ‘generations’ of technology proficiency,” said Biswas. “They need to elaborate on how the latest trends in HR technology—such as social, mobile,
cloud, analytics and unified talent—will impact workers across this spectrum and ultimately alter the future of work,” he added. From the panel Mr. Arun Dhaka,, Country Sales Director, India & South Asia Cornerstone said further emphasized the role of technology and how it has evolved in various roles of HR i.e performance evaluation, rewards and training and development etc.The generation that is joining the workforce today is one that has never known a world without computers, cell
phones, email, or instant messaging. They expect to be able to access information anytime, anyplace, anywhere. They are usually more receptive to digitally-supported training or internal social networking tools compared to traditional methods of training. On the engagement front, Gen Y is used to sharing news of their activities and achievements in the digital world. So a powerful engagement tool for this generation will be an HR portal/social portal where they get ‘liked’ or commented on by colleagues. This generation also craves feedback, alongside criticism. They need affirmation in their daily tasks and recognition. For instance, sending little text messages of appreciation is a great motivator for them.He also laid emphasis on how technology is transforming HR and changing the game while at it.

The 2014 SHRM India Annual Conference & Exposition—with
its enriching and power-packed schedule of 6+ concurrent sessions, 20+ knowledge sessions, 50+ global and national speakers, and over 650 delegates—was inaugurated yesterday amid huge fanfare and a large audience. With a focus on “Connect, Inspire, Grow”, India’s premier HR event delivered on its promise to provide a global platform for attendees to promote, network and engage better.
Ron Kaufman, Founder, UP Your Service and NY Times bestselling author, columnist and management consultant delivered a rousing keynote session on ‘Capturing the Power of a Superior Service Culture: Creating a Sustainable Competitive Advantage’.
Kaufman took the audience through specific actions and practical techniques that they can use to exceed expectations and improve the quality of service delivered at all levels of their organizations, inside and outside.
“Organizations that attract good people as employees and as customers are the need of the hour. We need organizations
with cultures that uplift employees, motivate them, and inspire them to take good care of other people. We also need leaders who understand how to keep service at top of mind every day. And how to build a culture that keeps service improving and growing in every way,” said Kaufman.
In a world where customers and staff have increasing options, companies
with a powerful service reputation and an ‘Uplifting Service’ culture are attracting and retaining the best talent, achieving market leadership and enjoying sustainable success.
“In fact, building a service-focused culture today is no longer an option, it is a competitive necessity,” he pointed out.

Achieve success as an HR professional with the Competency Model
SHRM Membership: Adding value to HR, every day
The SHRM Competency Model identifies what it means to
be a successful HR professional across the performance continuum, around the globe, and from early to executive career levels. The competencies identified in the model are individual characteristics such as knowledge, skills, abilities, self-image, traits, mindsets, feelings and ways of thinking, which when used in appropriate roles, achieve a desired result.
Kari R Strobel, Director, HR Competencies, Thought Leadership, SHRM will take you through the model in detail in her session today.
According to Kari, SHRM’s elements for HR success are part of a comprehensive competency model designed to serve as a resource to help HR professionals achieve their career goals, from entry to executive levels.
In 2009, SHRM began to identify core competencies needed to succeed as an HR professional. An initial model was developed through a synthesis of academic and practitioner literature. That model then was tested, refined and further developed based
on feedback obtained in 111 focus groups with 1,200 HR professionals globally. Overall, the initiative engaged 33,500 HR professionals in 29 cities representing 33 nationalities.
The model comprises nine foundational competencies, one technical competency and eight behavioral compe t enc i e s that HR
professionals need if they are to be successful at the entry, mid, senior and executive levels of experience; in small, medium, and large organizations; in private, public, nonprofit and not-for-profit sectors; and in organizations with multinational and domestic operations.
The model includes the following competencies:
• HR expertise • Relationship management • Consultation • Leadership and navigation • Communication • Diversity and inclusion • Ethical practice • Critical evaluation • Business acumen
SHRM’s competency model will play a key role in developing successful HR practitioners, and is the
basis for SHRM’s new competency-based HR certification, which will be released in
2015.
SHRM is also conducting a criterion-related
validity investigation of the competency model to examine the relationship between SHRM’s professional HR competency
model and individual and organizational
performance.

In a truly inspiring and motivating session, Ashok Alexander, Director at
Antara; Lead at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in India; and Ex-Director at McKinsey & Company, India spoke about his personal journey of leadership and the transition from heading one of the world’s leading organizations to working with the under-privileged and marginal sections of the society.Hearing him speak about how the whole experience added value to his personality as a leader and altered his view towards life was truly captivating. As a director at McKinsey, Alexander
worked with multiple clients across a wide array of industries in India and US, but the decision of moving away from the safety of his job was a sense of adventure for him. “The moment I got the offer from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to work for HIV victims, I did not even blink once and jumped to grab it with both hands, without even thinking for a moment that I was stepping down from the position of a Director of the India country office after almost a decade of service,” said Alexander.Alexander set up a new office in 2003 and quickly applied his management
experience to drive the success of the foundation’s HIV/AIDS initiative. His journey surely encouraged people to move on from their boring monotonous lives for a bigger role and an adventure of a lifetime.“I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to build and work with a great team which was focused on supporting the poorest and the most marginalized communities and making a contribution to help create healthier and safer lives,” Alexander said.He also put the spotlight on the poor conditions of Indian sex workers and
HIV victims, especially children, who are fighting for their lives. Alexander recalled an incident his team was educating sex workers about the importance of condoms but all the women wanted to talk about was a violence-reduction program, not a condom program. “Most HIV programs are supply-side driven; you count treatments and how many condoms are distributed. In this case, the consumer was not interested in the product. We had to persuade them that it was in their best interest to be strong and healthy,” he said.

Gaining insights into the mind of the CHROAs part of the Annual Conference
& Exposition 2014, SHRM India made a commitment to engage top Chief Human Resource Officers (CHROs) and yesterday it came good. Over a 100 CHROs are attending this year’s conference.
Jeff Pon, Chief Human Resources & Strategy Officer for SHRM welcomed the large turnout of CHROs to a scintillating event on September 24 at the Leela Ambience Gurgaon Hotel.
According to Pon, the SHRM India initiative allowed HR leaders and professionals to connect with top chief executives from around the world. “Our goal is to build a network of Chief Human Resources Executives in major cities across the globe to provide a platform for leading and transforming the HR profession,” he said. “The forum for these exclusive interactions is a series of local “hubs” with invitation-only participation and regulated by the chief HR executive leading each hub. We also intend to connect all executives in these hubs to global hubs, held in conjunction with SHRM conferences”.
SHRM will work with hub leaders to support quarterly events that include conversations and presentations on public policy, relevant topics and trends and future drivers of the HR profession, Pon said. “The SHRM India summit is an opportunity to gain CHROs’ insights on our initiatives and to learn how we can serve the needs of this senior segment of our membership,” he said.Pon also added that events such as these increase the Society’s value proposition for senior executives by strengthening their peer networks and providing a venue to give back to the HR profession. The CHRO Engagement Initiative aims to help SHRM India develop content, conduct research and advocate for issues that are ‘top-of-the-mind’ for chief HR executives.
The war for talent just got future-smart
A leadership story: Words that inspired change
With Talent Management becoming one of the most important
buzzwords in the HR and corporate sectors, the war for talent has taken center stage. In his power byte during the panel discussion on ‘FlashForward - The Future of Talent Management: Is the war for talent over?’ Virender Aggarwal, CEO, Ramco addressed the all-important question on talent wars that has been on the mind of every HR professional.
“According to a recent Harvard report, in a stark contrast from the 1930s-50s where 72% of the top 50 companies were natural resources-based, more than 50% of the companies in the top 50 list are talent-based now. The debate of Change agents vs Free agents has reached the corridors of leadership,” said Aggarwal. “Organization brand management is now an HR Business. However, is investing in free agents worth it, and is hierarchical reporting redundant in talent economy?” he asked. The panel discussed the need for diversified talent in today’s rebalancing world economy. The chair and panelists
also raised a question about whether talent management was increasingly becoming an integral part of long-term business strategy or remains a short term tactical problem. The discussions veered in favor of HR executives who needed to rethink the way their companies plan to recruit, develop, and retain talent. With the emergence of automated and comprehensive integrated Human Capital Management (HCM) systems, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), Internet of Things, and Smart HR technologies, it was agreed that talent management indeed has to evolve to engage and empower employees in a connected world.
2015: Vegas, here we come!The Gambling Capital of the World;
Glitter Gulch; Sin City; There are many nicknames but only one Las Vegas. The city with the best nightlife will play host to the 2015 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition. The global conference is scheduled for June 28-July 1 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, located adjacent to the famous Las Vegas Strip, where the largest and the most notable casinos and hotels are located.
“We intend to tap into the vast talent network of forward-thinking companies located in Las Vegas, along with playing host to key business leaders from around the world to deliver another outstanding event,” said Lisa Block, Vice President of Meetings and Conferences for SHRM.
Registration is currently open for the international Las Vegas conference and a preview rate is available up to January 16, 2015. Early bird registration would open on January 17, 2015.
Vegas Born
Nevada’s largest city Vegas began as a Mormon settlement during the 1800s, and a portion of the Mormon Fort that was built in 1855 still stands as a reminder near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard North and Washington Avenue.Back in 1931, when the state legalized gambling, Las Vegas was transformed into an adult playground. That year, the arrival of workers to construct the Hoover Dam contributed to a population boom in the city. But the transformation wouldn’t have been complete if World War II in the 1940s had not brought in the defense industry
to the area. After the war, though, towering hotels and casinos began to dominate the landscape of the strip. This drew world-class entertainers and topless showgirls who debuted on the strip in 1957. Two years later, the state legislature created the Nevada Gaming Commission to oversee all these activities.Today, tourism and gambling provide most of the employment opportunities in this desert city that will be 110 years old in 2015 when SHRM checks in. In 2013, Vegas attracted more than 39.6 million visitors, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA). Some of the most well-known businesses located in Vegas include online retailer Zappos, Cox Communications, the Valley Health System, and United Health care.Las Vegas is an equally popular convention and tradeshow location for companies from across the globe. In 2012, convention and tradeshow attendees generated $6.7 billion in non-gaming revenue, according to LVCVA. It is a favorite venue for some
of SHRM’s conferences, most recently hosting the 2011 Annual Conference and the 2013 Talent Management Conference & Exposition.Entertainment Like No Other!
While the city may be best known for its casinos, eye-popping entertainment and affordable buffets, are among world-famous attractions. These include:• The 550-foot-tall High Roller—the world’s largest Ferris wheel with enclosed, air-conditioned seats. It is located at The Linq, an open-air retail, dining and entertainment district at the far end of the Strip.• A behind-the-scenes tour of the History Channel’s hit reality TV show “Pawn Stars”.• Score, a 10,000-square-foot exhibit of sports memorabilia at the Luxor Hotel & Casino.• The erupting volcano, choreo-graphed to music, outside the Mirage Hotel. It features massive fireballs, and the free show takes place every hour, from 6 pm to 11 pm.
