Established in 1936, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has emerged as a leading social work and social sciences institute
engaged in teaching, research, training, field action and policy advocacy in the fields of social work, development, and the
social, health and management sciences. We are proud to enter into our 75th Year of existence and celebrate this platinum
jubilee year together with batch of 2010-12.
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences is a centre of excellence in the field of Health Systems Studies. Its Masters programmes in
Health Administration, Hospital Administration, Public Health Social Epidemiology & Public Health Policy, Economics & Finance
prepare students for managerial roles in these areas and carry out high quality social and policy research on a range of health
issues with a view to support evidence-based national health policy and programme planning.
Selection to these Masters programmes is done through an all-India admission test every year. These programmes involve two
years of theoretical and experiential learning with faculty drawn from within and outside the Institute. The cutting edge
curriculum of these Masters programmes integrates semester-wise internships in different health and hospital settings
throughout the two year period, a block placement prior to graduation, and a rigorous dissertation work.
A large number of eminent practitioners from health and hospital systems, within and outside Mumbai, teach and provide
fieldwork and internship support to our students.
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences remains alert to the process of renewal, restructuring and change in the context of changing
times and emerging challenges. As part of this process, some fundamental changes and restructuring which had already been
set in motion at the Institute, have taken major strides. One such outcome is the introduction of the new programme in Master
of Public Health Policy, Economics & Finance.
I am proud to present the 2010-2012 batches of bright, socially conscientious and skilled, Hospital and Health Administrators,
Public Health Policy, Economics & Finance and Public Health Social Epidemiology graduates in the country for placement in
your organisation.
Dr. Parasuraman
Director
Tata Institute of Social Sciences
This year, the Institute is celebrating its Platinum Jubilee. In this long history of 75 years of the Institute, we have come a long
way in the last three decades in working in the field of health in terms of training, research and extension. Started as a one-
semester programme on Certificate in Hospital Administration in 1980, today, the Institute boasts of 4 postgraduate degree
programmes and one diploma programme in the field of health. The alumni of these programmes are occupying leadership
positions in the health sector in India and abroad.
This year, 4 postgraduate degree programme students will be attending campus placement. While MHA (Health) students are
equipped to undertake leadership role in planning and implementing healthcare programmes in the government and the
voluntary sectors, MHA (Hospital) students are trained to take up leadership role in hospitals and hospital consultancy
organizations. In addition, both the programme students are trained in health related sectors like insurance and information
technology. The students have very strong understanding of their respective health and hospital fields and are strongly molded
and mentored in managing health and hospital organizations. There are 31 students in the MHA (Health) programme and 42
students in the MHA (Hospital) programme.
Master of Public Health (MPH) in Social Epidemiology is a unique programme in the sense, the focus of the programme is on
social epidemiology. The students have very strong orientation in research skills and have good understanding of the
epidemiology of both communicable and non-communicable diseases. These students will be excellent researchers and
analysts in public health field. There are 20 students in this programme. MPH in Health Policy, Economics and Finance is the
new programme and the first batch will be passing out this year. This programme is developed in collaboration with London
School of Economics (LSE) and some courses are taught by the professors of LSE. These students have strong orientation in
economic evaluation of health programmes and interventions and have excellent skills in health policy research and analysis.
There are 19 students in this programme for campus placement.
The strength of all these programmes is strong emphasis on practical training and research skills. Every semester, the students
are placed in organizations and communities related to their respective fields to understand and learn the “real world”, where
they will be employed later.
These students are ready to take-up the challenges before them in the health sector. Without hesitation, I can vouch that these
students are going to make a positive difference and impact on the organizations that are going to recruit them. I wish them all
success.

MESSAGE FROM
THE DIRECTOR
MESSAGE FROM
THE DEAN
Sir Dorabji Tata was passionate about social upliftment,
education and its reach across the Country “without
any distinction of place, nationality or creed”. Therefore
he put his heart and his wealth into the creation of
premier institutes of learning, research and social
advancement through a trust. One such institution was
the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work,
which had its humble beginning in 1936 with 20
students. The institute was a pioneering effort in the
field of Social Science study, research and practice in
India. It was set up in response to Dr. Clifford
Manshardt's vision of a post-graduate school of social
work, of a national stature.
The school was renamed 'Tata institute of Social
Sciences' in 1944. The institute made a mark in the
history of social work in India, through pioneering
efforts like publishing the Indian Journal of Social
Work, which is the first journal of social work in South
Asia. The Institute then and now is known for its prompt
and efficient response in sending relief in the face of
natural and man-made disasters.
The year 1964 was an important landmark in the
history of the Institute, when the Government of India
recognized it as a Deemed University. The institute has
been conferred with the prestigious five star rating by
the National Assessment and Accreditation Council
(NAAC). The institute has struck a perfect balance
between management and healthcare while aligning
itself along the noble principles of social sciences with
which it was born. The Tata Institute of Social Sciences
has continually strived to open newer vistas in the field
of social sciences and management.
It is our belief that this school is a part of life and that its students should be
trained to make independent judgement, to examine questions from all
angles and build a life philosophy which is their own and not a pale imitation
of those who have gone before.
Clifford Manshardt
(Founder Director of TISS, 1936-1961)
By doing well, the duty which is nearest to us, the duty which is in our hands
now, we make ourselves stronger; and improving our strength in this manner
step by step, we may reach a state in which it shall be our privilege to do the
most coveted and honoured duties in life and society.
VISION
MISSION
ABOUT TISS
Over seven decades of its eventful existence the school
has witnessed a meteoric rise and the birth of five
schools including Health System Studies, Management
and Labour Studies, Rural Development, Social
Sciences and Social Work and four independent centres
namely Disaster Management, Lifelong Learning,
Media and Cultural Studies and Research
Methodology.
TISS which now embarks on 75th glorious year of its
existence has always opened up a vast array of
opportunities for students as far as acquiring
knowledge and skills are concerned. Apart from the
conventional classes held in the institute classrooms,
TISS believes in providing its students with hands-on
experience related to everything they are learning.
And we as tissians firmly believe in 'learning without
thought is labour lost, thought without learning is
perilous'
4 5
Continuing with its tradition of having a futuristic approach towards
development, Tata Institute of Social Sciences became the pioneering
institute to introduce the Certificate in Hospital Administration, as early
as 1981, which was upgraded to a Diploma in 1986. In 1989, the
institute established the Department of Health Systems Studies with the
assistance of the Ford Foundation. In the year 1993, the department
added a new feather in its cap by starting the Master in Health and Hospital
administration programme.
In its 70th year, TISS restructured all the courses to make them more suited to meet the
existing demands and challenges of the healthcare sector. Post restructuring in the year
2006, the Department of Health Systems Studies was renamed as The School of Health Systems Studies. In the year 2008, School
of health system studies started the Master of Public Health with a focus on social epidemiology as its unique feature followed
by introduction of masters of Public Health (MPH) in Health Policy, Economics and Finance in the year 2010.
Today the School has 4 centres:
Centre for Hospital Management
Centre for Health Policy, Planning and Management
Centre for Public Health
Centre for Health and Social Sciences
The School conducts 4 Masters Degree courses – Master of Hospital Administration, Master of Health Administration, Master of
Public Health (Social Epidemiology), Master of Public Health (Health Policy), and a Diploma in Hospital Administration
The Master of Hospital Administration programme prepares students for leadership roles in the hospital sector through training
in planning, operational and project management of hospitals including orientation in the managerial aspects of clinical and
support services departments. The job profile ranges from planning departmental activities, evaluating doctors and other
hospital employees, to create and maintain policies, helping in developing procedures for medical treatments, quality
assurance, patient services, and public relations activities such as active participation in fund-raising and community health
planning.
The Master of Health Administration programme prepares students to take on managerial positions in the national health
programmes, the NGO sector and community-based health programmes by building capacities in planning, implementing,
monitoring and evaluating those programmes. It also orients the students to macro issues relevant to health policy and
programming in the country.Students of this programme are offered managerial positions in national and international health
care organisations and projects. Their job description includes designing, planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluation
of health care programmes and projects, especially in the community.
This MPH programme has a focus on Social Epidemiology and is designed to orient the students towards the conceptual
understanding of public health issues and impart research skills required for developing much needed evidence based planning
at the population level. Thus, the students will be capable of undertaking meaningful research for supporting public health
policy and planning for the effective implementation of public health programmes. The students can occupy technical and
leadership positions in public health programmes after passing out.
This programme aims to broaden understanding of policy issues through a multi-disciplinary approach and develop critical
analysis of issues within health policy, economics and financing and enable students to devise appropriate health policy
responses. This is a unique master's programme designed to create high quality professionals with expertise in health policy
with strong foundation in economics and financial analysis. The students can occupy technical and leadership positions
in public health programmes after passing out.

ABOUT SCHOOL OF
HEALTH SYSTEMS
STUDIES
The School of Health System Studies is spread over the two Mumbai
campuses of Tata Institute of Social Sciences - The Main Campus and
the Malti & Jal A. D. Naoroji Campus Annexe. Both the Campuses are
located in Deonar in the North-east section of Greater Mumbai. The Main
Campus is situated opposite the Deonar bus depot on V.N. Purav Marg.
Spread over an area of approximately 10 acres, it houses the School of Health
System Studies, School of Social Work, School of Habitat Studies as well as
Independent Centres of Lifelong Learning, Media & Culture Studies and Research Methodology.
The School of Health System Studies has a resource centre available only to SHSS faculty and
students – the Documentation Cell which boasts of almost every title written in the field of Health
& Hospital Management and Public Health. The other structures ensconced in the Main Campus
include:
The Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Library: The Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Library has in stock about 1,03,000 volumes. The
selection of the material is geared to meet the needs of post-graduate students and M.Phil. /Ph.D. scholars. It subscribes to over
200 scholarly journals and has over 1,600 audio-visual materials. It maintains newspaper clippings on current topics and
prepares bibliographies on different subjects. It is fully computerised and has a computer reading facility for the visually
impaired. Users can access the library database using an Online Public Access Catalogue. The Library brings out a quarterly
Selective Dissemination of Information and Current Awareness Bulletin. The UGC-INFLIBNET has recognised it as a Document
Delivery Centre.
Hostels: There are two each of Men’s and Women’s Hostels in the Main Campus along with 30 Guest rooms for our International
students. The New Campus also houses a Men’s and a Women’s Hostel.
Dining Hall: It is managed by the DH Committee with student
representatives being its active members. It is open for all the
Master’s degree students, Ph.D. scholars, staff and
participants of all the short-term courses and seminars
held in the institute. NGO Canteen: In keeping with
the overall ethos of the Institute, the Canteen is
managed by an NGO devoted to women’s
empowerment and run by a self-help group of
woman rag-pickers.
Health Centre: It provides Medical
Consultation services by two Medical Officers
who visit the Institute on alternate days from
4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. from Monday to
Saturday. Trained professionals provide
counselling services to the students for 3 hours
every day of the week, except Sundays. The
Counsellors help the students in their day-to-day
concerns and also enhance their overall
functioning. The M.K. Tata Memorial Gymkhana and
Recreation Centre provides facilities such as gym,
yoga, table tennis, carom and badminton.
The Malti and Jal A.D. Naoroji Campus is located off V. N. Purav
Marg. The Naoroji campus annexe is next to the BARC Hospital Gate
on Deonar Farm Road. This campus of 110 acres presently houses the School
of Management and Labour studies and Jamshetji Tata Centre for Disaster management. It boasts of state of the art classrooms
in its two academic buildings. The classes for junior batches of MHA and PH courses are held here. However, the highlight of the
Malti and Jal A.D. Naoroji Campus is the ultra-modern, high-tech acoustic wonder called the Convention Centre. It is a 500
seater auditorium which hosts most of the events and meets of SHSS, including the signature annual fest - Clairvoyance. This
campus also houses Student hostels, Dining Hall and an NGO canteen. The most cherished feature of both the campuses is their
natural picturesque beauty. The greenery on the campus is not in the form of carefully cultivated and manicured gardens. A
stroll through the campus is more like a walk in the woods, with each tree and shrub growing and proliferating on its own, albeit
not wildly.

MASTER OF
HOSPITAL
ADMINISTRATION
Introduction
Hospitals and healthcare facility providers as we see them today; are becoming some of the most complex and fluid
organizations to manage in the times to come. This was a challenge, foreseen early by the faculty at the Tata Institute of Social
Sciences, who were thus among the pioneers in instituting a full fledged Masters in Hospital Administration in 1993 which to
date remains one of the most coveted training programs this sector has seen. In the increasingly competitive arena of healthcare
management education, the TISS strives to maintain its tradition of academic excellence whilst simultaneously working to
radically transform its academic culture and spirit as is captured in its tryst towards “Re-imagining futures…”
The basis underlying the course framework is the fundamental understanding of hospitals as socially, structurally,
technologically and financially sensitive organizations employing a myriad mix of some of the most skilled and unskilled human
resource. Along with a strong emphasis on their theoretical base, students are tested for their conceptual clarity through class
presentations, case studies and group tasks simulating decision making in the hospital environment. Keeping in with the pace of
the industry, the course content is continuously reviewed and revised to keep abreast of necessary developments whether it is
Hospital management information systems, Health insurance or Business development strategy for hospitals.
With that, the students would undergo seven months of grueling internships across some of the best hospitals and allied
organizations like consultancies, healthcare IT & health insurance companies in the country and simultaneously undertake
individual projects addressing some of the relevant concerns or advancements in healthcare.

“What the mind does not know, the eyes do not see”…Keeping this very maxim in mind, the sequence of
theory subjects and internships has been framed to ensure that students know exactly what they are
expected to learn and apply during each of the three, eight-week long internships that they would be
credited for in the course of their degree.
After covering key fundamental subjects like Healthcare Finance, Hospital planning, Clinical and Support services & Materials
management, at the end of their second semester students are posted in their first internship at major public hospitals in
Mumbai like KEM, BYL Nair Hospital, Tata Memorial Hospital, MGM Vashi, BARC hospital, Holy family hospital, Cooper hospital,
Prince Aly Khan hospital and Rajawadi hospital to name a few. Students would understand the hospital as a system and take up
three clinical and support departments each for detailed analysis and report preparation. Additionally the students may be
given small assignments by the hospital authorities depending on what they would like students to help them with.
By the end of their third semester, they cover Operations research, Health insurance, Quality management and Medical
technology before they start their second internship in large & renowned trust hospitals across the country like CMC Vellore,
CMC Ludhiana, Sir Gangaram hospital, P.D. Hinduja, Breachcandy hospital etc. This time, they would undertake actual case
studies in operations for analysis and work on solutions that can be actually implemented. Gap analysis for accreditation,
patient satisfaction levels turnaround time for reports, inventory control systems, etc. for example.
At the end of the last semester, students have had covered Legal framework for hospitals, Systems development & Information
resource management, Marketing and Business development strategies when they are posted in their third internship with
some of the largest healthcare corporations in the country like the Apollo group of hospitals, the Fortis group, the Max group,
Manipal group of hospitals etc. In this posting they would be expected to undertake specific micro-level assessment like
modules for staff training, feasibility and marketing plans for new service or hospitals, working on actual HMIS databases, re-
engineering for departments like front office, stores, etc.
Honoring the hundred percent placement record at TISS, by this time all students would have had been placed in respectable
positions across some of the best healthcare organizations in the country. However, before they embark on their professional
journey, they would serve uncompensated in their choice of healthcare organizations like charitable hospitals, NGOs,
consultancies, healthcare IT or health insurance companies for a whole month rendering their knowledge and skills as they
would in the organizations they would soon join.
All internships follow absolutely stringent attendance rules and surprise visits to the hospitals by faculty are common,
accompanied by confidential feedback letters for every student during their internships.
The project is the other important credited exercise for students where they get a chance to choose a
topic of their interest to extensively work on. They are guided by faculty not only from the college, but
also industry experts in respective sectors. This project not only gives the students a chance to explore an
area in great detail, it can also help them identify sectors they may like to work for, in the long run. Some
of the likely project types could include identifying functional departments for comparative analysis with
the ideal, planning considerations for precision departments like the Operation theatres and Intensive care
units for example, developing better systems for materials management, unique human resource problems in
hospitals and application of newer advances like Hospital Management Information Systems and Building Management
Systems. Students are expected to extensively review literature for international & national guidelines, collect verifiable data
from atleast three hospitals and comparatively analyze the ideal versus actual findings for gaps. Further, they are also required
to prepare realistic recommendations that would address these gaps which would be very useful for students to develop their
problem solving and decision making abilities.
This project extends through the entire span of their two year training wherein their progress would be evaluated at regular
intervals for revision of approach as gauged by the respective guides and by the faculty.

MASTER OF
HEALTH
ADMINISTRATION
Introduction
TISS has been offering the Health administration course since the early 1990s.Since then it has been the best in its efforts
towards moulding the best candidates into the finest health managers!
Over the years the course curriculum has been reinvented and structured to keep pace and meet the demands of the dynamic
healthcare industry. The internships give a fresher the hands on experience of health management in various streams of
healthcare industry ranging from NGOs to Municipal corporations, to many other private & public organisations. Thus this
course by its end exhaustively makes a candidate a utile heath manager.
The 2 year intensive program is designed to develop a cadre of professionals competent enough to take up key managerial and
research positions in both public and private health sectors. The Master of Health Administration programme prepares students
to take on managerial positions in the national health programmes, the NGO sector, healthcare consultancies, health insurance,
IT in healthcare and community-based health programmes by building capacities in planning, implementing, monitoring and
evaluation of programmes.
It also orients the students to macro issues relevant to health policy and programming in the country. The teaching is beyond
the four walls, the faculty members are ever enthusiastic to impart the best knowledge to the students & various innovative ways
adopted by them help students progress better like the field visits, classroom exercises based on the topics of practical
application & many more.
We have been successful in attracting the titans of the health sector like WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA,NHSRC, SHSRC, NRHM, NACO,
PATH, CARE, Aga Khan Health Services, ICICI, Infosys and PWC for our recruitments in the past & have been able to make it upto
their expectations.
The course curriculum has a shade of social science along with the foundation of management which makes it unique & thus the
students are better management personnel with a sense of social responsibility. This blend comes from the core management
based courses like principles of management, strategic healthcare management, operations research, financial management
along with very sensitive courses like social science perspective on health, research methodology, etc. thus the artifact of these
academic courses is what we bring to the healthcare industry with our ingress!

Dissertation is a mandatory component of the course in Masters of Health Administration
& has been assigned the maximum credits.
This by far has been one of the best learning the students have received from the Institute.
The guidance by the faculty members along with their motivation has been proved to be
invaluable to the extent of even having students publishing their research papers in renowned
journals.
In an industry like healthcare that is changing fast, organisations must continually revise their
design and range of products. This is necessary due to the continuous technology change and
development as well as the changing preference of customers. Without a Research &
Development program, the organisation will have to rely on strategic alliances, acquisitions, and
networks to tap into the innovations of others. Thus research helps the organization to forgo its
present methods & come up with the ones that will help it perform to its best & that's exactly what
our candidates are experts at.
As an institute excelling in post-graduate programmes, we here learn not only to manage
healthcare but to explore the arenas in it!
TISS believe that realization of theory into practical is the actual possession of knowledge.
Nurtured with the same idea, internships not just expose the students to the intricacies of
healthcare industry but also provide them with professional up-gradation in terms of
conceptualization and implementation.
Students are assigned to various carefully chosen organizations to give them the actual
flavour of health related issues and ground realities, keeping in mind the role of a Health
Administrator. Meticulously designed three rounds of 8 week internship gives them a hand-on
experience of various aspects of National Health Programs , the NGO sector , various community
health programs , a firsthand exposure to governments public health system ,with a chance to
apply the knowledge and skills they've gained from their academic experiences. Nevertheless it

MASTER OF
PUBLIC HEALTH
IN SOCIAL
EPIDEMIOLOGY
Introduction
History has spoken highly, of the importance of Public health, right from ancient relics and medieval period to the twenty first
century. In the Indian context, the Bhore committee report in 1946, the recent NHP 2002 and the NRHM documents, all
highlight the training of public health professionals as an important requirement for the improvement of the health situation in
the country. With the kind of public health problems the country is facing in the social, cultural and economic context, there is
an increased need to emphasize on social epidemiology. Keeping in the mind the existing public health scenario in the country,
the full-time course in public health at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) caters to the need for trained human power in
public health and also helps in the protection and maintenance of public health with a focus on social epidemiology. This
programme explores the link between the social environment and health of the population along with strong methodological
and technical foundation in epidemiology, biostatistics, quantitative analysis and national and international public health
policies.
This programme is covered over four semesters, with emphasis on research related courses and development of public health
paradigms. The eclectic mix of students from various educational backgrounds and work experience adds new perspectives and
knowledge on various issues pertaining to Public Health. Polished by excellent faculty in knowledge and skills to handle all
aspects of national and international public health issues, and further honed in community interaction and research skills by
multiple internships, the course ordains students to shine bright in the public health scene, be it rural or urban, national or
global.

The MPH course consists of two internships and a Block posting, at the end of second, third and fourth
semester respectively. Both internships are of eight weeks and the Block posting is of 4 weeks. The first
internship focuses on urban slums. The students are sensitized to public health issues in urban slums by
means of various assignments. These include creating a socio-demographic profile of the area via a door to
door survey. Further, they carry out an individual study related to one of the problems found in the
community. This exercise helps them understand the practical use of research techniques and procedures learnt in class.
Detailed analysis of factors such as socioeconomic status, health status, morbidity patterns, utilization of health care services
and expenditure for healthcare help improve analytical skills of the students.
The first internship was undertaken with the help of following organizations:
Urban Health Post- Cheetah Camp, Trombay, Mumbai
SATHI (NGO), Turbhe Stores, Navi Mumbai
Community Health Centre,Shivaji Nagar, Mumbai
The second internship is designed to understand health and its determinants typical to rural communities. Students are
encouraged to carry out additional research on a public health situation pertinent to the particular community and suggest
suitable practical recommendations for improvement.
Studies on topics covering a variety of public health issues relevant to the community are done. These include case control
studies, comparative studies or Knowledge, Attitude and Practice studies on a variety of topics ranging from communicable and
non-communicable diseases to women, child and adolescent health. Studies may also included evaluation research on certain
on-going programs.
The organizations which facilitate this internship are:
K.E.M. Hospital and Research Centre, Vadhu, Pune
T.I.S.S. Tuljapur School of Rural Development
I.H.M.P., Pachod(Aurangabad)
M.L. Dhawale Homoeopathy Institute, Karjan, Gujarat

M.L. Dhawle Homeopathic Institute, Vikramgarh, Thane, Maharashtra
PRASAD Chikitsa, Ganeshpuri, Bhiwandi, Thane, Maharashtra
SEARCH, Gadchiroli, Maharashtra
Department of Community Medicine,Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences (DMIMS),Sawangi, Wardha.
Central Himalayan Rural Action Group (Chirag), Nainital, Uttaranchal
Aarohi, Nainital, Uttaranchal
The final block internship towards the end of the curriculum entails every student to work in any healthcare organization of their
choice, without any compensation, for a period of 1 month. This internship reiterates the ethos of the institute that is ingrained
in each student – service to the society. Though the students have been well placed ( job placement) before the period of this
internship, they contribute their best theoretical and practical skills to the organization.
Research being the core of MPH, the entire fourth semester is dedicated to the dissertation, a process
which commences early in the second semester. Each student is expected to work on a current and
challenging topic. These studies are carried out under the guidance of a designated faculty member. The
dissertation is duly reviewed at each step by the faculty – right from the presentation of the proposal to data
collection and to the actual analysis. The study may be qualitative, quantitative or a mix of both the types. A
wide range of health problems ranging from communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases to women's health issues are
covered. The student applies theoretical knowledge to the selected issue to come up with remarkable results. The data
collection, analysis and application help apply the concept in the field. Published research carves out a niche for MPH at SHSS,
which is known for its research excellence.

MASTER OF PUBLIC
HEALTH IN HEALTH
POLICY,
ECONOMICS AND
FINANCE
Introduction
Health systems across the globe are facing myriad challenges related to the dynamic International policy scenario and the
pressures to perform better socially and economically. One of the key challenges shared by many developing countries is the
lack of trained human resource to engage in evidence based policy generation, as well as to deal with issues requiring an
understanding of and a problem-solving expertise in the social, economic, and financial dimensions of health.
The Master of Public Health (MPH) in Health Policy, Economics and Finance, developed by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in
collaboration with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), has been designed with a global focus, to create
this human resource, with an expertise in: critical analysis of issues within health policy, economics, and financing; design of
appropriate health policy responses; and generation of policy recommendations related to public health action.
Structured as a 2 years course, the course has an in-campus teaching components of first two semesters, followed by field
practicum and research project in the second year.
The rigorous classroom teaching component and the extensive field experience scope nurtures a special set of skills in the
students, foremost of which is critical analysis, reinforced by discussions, debates, seminars, problem solving exercises, actual
field implementation and observation of learnt concepts, and a unique pedagogy by internationally renowned professors from
Tata Institute of Social Sciences, London School of Economics and Political Science, and Harvard University. Another skill given
special emphasis is the understanding and application of financing principles, econometric techniques and the systematic use
of policy research & review in decision making.
An in-depth understanding of the dynamics of the pharmaceutical and health insurance markets and a comprehensive
knowledge of global health systems give the students an edge in areas such as policy analysis, review, and design required for all
health related programmes and projects. Devised specifically for the Master of Public Health (MPH) in Health Policy, Economics
and Finance, the one semester duration field practicum is an innovative, first of its kind exercise that places scholars in varied
settings right from innovative private foundations to State Health systems who are contributing to public health, thus giving
them a unique opportunity to rise above theory to practice and be involved in public health 'in-action' and witness the
dimensions of policy, economics, and finance, as they apply to the field in reality.
This one of its kind Masters Programme trains Public Health professionals to be experts in assaying analytical, consulting,
advocacy and advisory roles in public sector bodies, global non-profit organizations, policy consultancies, bilateral and
multilateral aid agencies, health financing institutions, health policy research organizations, and the pharmaceutical sectors.

The academic curriculum includes two internships.
The first is a 5 week placement with a Non-profit Organization in Mumbai. This is an
opportunity for the interns to understand in-depth the organization's management
principles, human resource policies, and other operational aspects. It gives the scholars
hands-on experiences of the non-profit sector and its interaction with the community.
Working within urban slum localities, the scholars get the opportunity to undertake a
research project, and study the community within its context, thus gaining valuable insights
into community health and the health of the urban poor.
The second is a 1 month block placement towards the end of the curriculum. The interns can
choose any healthcare organization of their choice and reiterate the ethos of 'service to the
society' by contributing their skills to the organization.
Lasting the entire duration of the third semester, it marks the transition for the scholars
from theory to practice, gives an invaluable opportunity to the scholars to conduct
supervised field interventions.
Scholars are placed in varied settings with the assignment of critically reviewing an
existing project, policy, or programme; identifying gaps or problem areas; proposing a
practice based model or intervention; and implementing and evaluating the same. This gives
the scholar a unique platform to engage with diverse stakeholders in varied contexts, while
acquiring phenomenal professional growth.
This year the students were placed in the following organizations for the field
practicum:
Ministry of health and Family Welfare training centre, Himachal Pradesh
State Health System Resource Centre, Chattisgarh.
Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project
Karnataka Health System
SEARCH, Gadchiroli
CSR, Ambuja Cements Foundation
Micro Insurance Academy
Karuna trust, Karnataka
Institute of health management
Healing Fields Foundation
Foundation for Research in Community Health

Research excellence has been the strength of the education imparted at the Tata Institute
of Social Sciences. The rigorous process trains the students for evidence-based thinking
and gives them an edge in the qualitative and quantitative dimensions of research under
the guidance of the institute's faculty, acclaimed for their Research expertise.
Health policy or health systems related issues are taken up and explored, understood,
studied or evaluated, with the entire fourth semester being dedicated to the Research
Project.
