Isolamento, isolato, isolante, isolare:tutte voci con la stessa etimologia che ci

rimandano a una dimensione di autonomia eseparazione da ciò che c’è intorno. A questogruppo di parole appartiene anche il termineisola, che per sua denizione è una supercieemersa limitata e interamente circondatadall’acqua. Un piccolo universo a sé stante,dunque, con conni ben deniti e lontano

dalla terraferma. Un luogo particolare?Sicuramente si, anche perché è regolato

da ritmi, abitudini e necessità proprie che lorendono unico e irriproducibile. Per scoprire

questa ‘nuova dimensione’, la Sicilia offreben tre arcipelaghi da visitare: a nord quellodelle Eolie con Ustica, a ovest le Egadi e asud le Pelagie con Pantelleria. Tre gruppi di

piccole isole che però non si assomigliano traloro e offrono ai loro visitatori vacanze moltodiverse. Le Eolie contano ben sette isole, natee ancor oggi dominate da un’intensa attività

vulcanica che regala paesaggi mozzaato,spiagge di sabbia nera, pozze termali chescaturiscono a 90° dalla terra e notti illuminatedal rosso incandescente dei lapilli. Poi ci sonoanche splendide camminate per gli amantidel trekking e pareti a strapiombo nel mareper gli instancabili divers, un mare cristallino

per chi vuole nuotare e una gastronomia dafavola capace di incontrare i gusti di tutti.

Davanti a Trapani invece ci sono le isoleEgadi, famose per il loro colore rosato dato

dalla presenza di roccia dolomitica, per alcune specie endemiche ancora presenti eper la loro morfologia variegata che spaziadalle piccole spiagge riparate agli strapiombi

che superano i quattrocento metri d’altezza.Continuando verso sud incontriamo le Pelagieche, con Pantelleria, offrono il vero compendiodella vacanza ideale. Qui sport, storia, natura,

archeologia, gastronomia, mondanità sivivono tra scogli e piccole spiagge nascoste,tra silenziosi paesi e terre coltivate: e tuttoquesto a due passi dal fascino esotico dellaTunisia.

recalls a dimension of independence andseparation from all that surrounds it. The word“island” also belongs to this group of wordsand by denition is a surface which is abovesea-level and is entirely surrounded by water.A small universe of itself, therefore, with welldened borders and at a certain distance

from the mainland. Without a doubt a specialkind of place, as it is driven by its own rhythms,

habits and needs that render it unique andone-of-a-kind. Sicily offers three archipelagos

that present the opportunity to discover this“new dimension”. To the north are the AeolianIslands with Ustica, to the west are the EgadiIslands and to the south the Pelagie Islands

with Pantelleria. These three groups of smallislands do not resemble each other at alland offer the visitor very different vacations.The Aeolian Islands are made up of seven

islands, born of and still dominated byan intense volcanic activity that createsbreathtaking landscapes, beaches of black sand, thermal pools that gush up at 90°Centigrade and night skies illuminated bythe burning red glow of lava. Then there aresplendid walks for trekkers and sheer cliffs that

fall into the sea for tireless divers, crystal-clear waters for swimmers and a dream-cuisine with

something for everyone’s taste. Off the coastof Trapani are the Aeolian Islands, famous

for their pink color due to the presence ofdolomitic rocks, for their native species and for their varied structure with secluded beachesand high cliffs over four hundred meters

high. Continuing in a southerly direction, oneencounters the Pelagie Islands, three smallislands that, along with Pantelleria, offer theepitome of an ideal vacation. Here one can nd

sports activities, history, nature, archaeology,delicious cuisine and a sparkling social life setamong cliffs and secluded beaches, silentlandscapes and farmlands. All this is but astone’s throw from the exotic lure of Tunisia.

Le isole Eolie devono il loro nome al

dio dei venti, Eolo. Pare infatti che, nella not-te dei tempi, il dio si fosse rifugiato qui (e piùprecisamente a Lipari) e che, osservando lenubi che uscivano probabilmente dal vul-

cano Stromboli, prevedesse le condizioni deltempo. L’arcipelago, con la sua rinomata for-ma a Y, si trova a circa quaranta chilometrial largo della Sicilia settentrionale e, nei giorni

di maggior visibilità, si può ammirare in tuttoil suo splendore dalla costa siciliana. Le isoleche lo compongono sono sette e ognuna diqueste è accompagnata da scogli o isolot-ti aforanti che ne aumentano il fascino e il

mistero. Si, queste terre hanno veramentequalcosa di particolare: grazie ad un’attività

vulcanica ancora molto vivace, infatti, il loroaspetto ci appare quasi come quello di unacreatura viva, che si muove e si adira quan-do meno lo si aspetta. A Stromboli, ad esem-

pio, ancora oggi si parla dell’isolotto emersoe poi subito riportato negli abissi. E cosa diredell’isola di Vulcano dove le notti sono anco-ra illuminate da colate incandescenti e lapilli,

rombi e tuoni che vengono dal centro dellaterra e dove vasche naturali si riempiono dizolfo ribollente che scaturisce dal suolo. Manon solo fuoco domina questo arcipelago:

ci sono infatti isole dolcissime come Panareae Salina, le piccole strade di pietra lavica dapercorrere a dorso di mulo, la natura inconta-minata, il profumo della Malvasia. E poi c’è ilmare, che diventa blu cobalto dove le pareti

rocciose si inabissano oppure rimane cristalli-no, giocando con le sabbie nissime e con i

ciotoli arrotondati dalla risacca. Un mare vivo,pieno di pesci e crostacei, che con il ventosi arrabbia e s’increspa e col sole si disten-de, accogliendo come un amico lo stranie-

ro che è venuto a salutarlo. Anche vestigia eresti archeologici arricchiscono questi luoghiche da sempre sono stati contesi e abitati,segno inequivocabile dell’anima forte che

tiene qui l’uomo con un laccio stretto chegli eventi del tempo non possono allentare.

name to the god of the winds, Aeolus.Legend has it that, in the mists of time, the godtook refuge upon the island (more precislyon Lipari) and that, by watching the clouds

that were rising probably from the Strombolivolcano, he could forecast the weather.The archipelago, with its famous Y shape, islocated about forty kilometers off the coast

of Northern Sicily and on particularly clear days it can be admired from the Sicilian coastin all its splendor. There are seven islandsthat make up the archipelago and eachis accompanied by a series of rocks or little

islands that increase its lure and mystery. Yes,these lands are truly a reality apart. Thanks to

a still lively volcanic activity, in fact, they look almost like a living creature which moves andangers when least expected. On Stromboli,for example, stories are told still today about

a small island that emerged briey only toimmediately sink back into the sea again.And what can be said about the island ofVulcano, where the nights are still lit up by the

molten lava ows and fountains of lava, whereyou can hear thundering that comes from thecenter of the earth and where natural poolsll up with boiling sulfur that comes from the

ground? But it is not only re that dominatesthis archipelago. There are also sweet andcharming islands such as Panarea and Salina,with narrow paths of lava stone which can betravelled upon the back of a donkey. There

is pristine nature and the scent of Malvasiagrapes. Then there’s the sea that becomes

a cobalt blue where the rocky cliffs meet it or where it stays crystal-clear, playing with thene sand and the pebbles that have beensmoothed by the continuous washing of the

waves. The sea is alive. It is a sea full of shand crustaceans, a sea that, when there iswind, gets angry and wavy and, when there issun, is at and calm, welcoming the foreigner

like a friend. Even ancient artifacts andremains enrich these places that for centurieshave been fought over and lived in. Theseartifacts and remains are clear signs of the

strong spirit that holds its people here like asnare that the events of time cannot loosen.
