Heralding from the sleepy Mornington Peninsula community of Flinders, Victoria, Skeet discovered at a young age that if the nightlife was lacking, the massive surf conditions were not. By his mid-20's, he was already pushing the limits at his local haunts.

Wanderlust pulsing through his veins, he soon struck out for the furthest-flung corners of the Earth, on adventures that not every young man would make the effort to go the distance, surfing the Amazonian tidal bores heretofore virgin to foam and resin.

A trip to Northern Indonesia was the beginning of a life-long love affair with one island and the flawless barrels he found there. Instantly awarded a place amongst the hardcore local crew for his outstanding tube-riding talents and his easy-going and friendly demeanor in and out of the line-up, Skeet was also the first to charge the mysto-wave outside the bay of Lagundri that the crew always pondered whether it could be surfed or not. This question was answered with elegance and nerves of steel.

Never one to follow the crowds or the trends, Skeet adventures to Europe in the midst of winter, finding the uncrowded and chilly conditions very much to his liking. With his perfectly fluent Spanish, spoken and written, Skeet fits right into the rugged Basque coastline of Santander. A winter was joyfully spent surfing the unpopulated bombie reefs that line the coast, above all La Vaca, long before big wave contests in Spain were a twinkle in the BWWT’s eye. Who needs the North Shore zoo? Not Skeeta.

In a quest to see what all the hype was about, and to compare him-self to his big wave brethren, Skeet ventures to that famed Mexican beach break, only to discover that not only is he par for his game, but furthermore, that he has had the gumption and the sense of adven-ture that have already lead him far beyond this beaten path to famil-iar waves. Sitting in Puerto and tracking swell on the other side of the Earth, he makes the decision to hit the road back to his favorite place, making sure to cover his tracks on the path. What ensues is the following:

With a total of 100,000+ views in a week’s time, and reposted over 60 times via the market’s most referred-to surf sites, including surfline.com, magicseaweed.com, surfermag.com, swellnet.com, coastalwatch.com and theinertia.com, just to name a few, it becomes evident that Skeet is one of the up and coming stars of free-surfing, with an ex-tremely evident media impact. What the media will never know is that this was not a one-off freak of a wave that was ridden. This is simply part of Skeet’s surfing concerto, that promises to expand and ripen with age. His desire, talent, charisma and fearlessness promise to take him far in the years to come.

Skeet Derham, born on Oct. 20, 1984, in Flinders, Victoria, Australia, currently seeks the backing, both material and financial, to pursue his quest off the beaten path, far from the madding crowds, as well as the party circuit. Multilingual, well-spoken and thoughtful, Skeet has a way of making his way through this world with very few ripples other than the one behind his back fin. His humor and kind-ness are legendary amongst the circles he runs in. Skeet's confidence, poise and calm concentration make him a candidate for taking big wave surfing to new levels and he will need the resources necessary to do this. In return, a sponsor is guaranteed an athlete who knows where to be when he needs to be there, with the correct equipment required, who has long known the importance of organization and cooperation with photographers and who lives for nothing more than the next apparently 'un-makeable' drop.

His next goal is to qualify for events on the Big Wave World Tour. According to several current BWWT competitors, this is a very feasi-ble goal for Skeet. His plans for 2014-2015 include stays in the chilly Northern California waters of Mavericks, with Todos Santos and Jaws in the corner of his eye, before he goes exploring once again for waves begging to be ridden for the first time.

Take part in his journey it promises to lead down the path less followed.

In Dec 2013, Skeeta enrolled in a One Ocean International Advanced Waterman Program. Because of the nature of this program, he had to go through a screening process to determine his suitability to enroll.

I was very impressed with Skeeta’s portfolio, not only his ability in the water, but his preparation and experience. Skeeta is one of the very few people I have met who “walks the talk:” he trains hard in all sorts of environments and conditions, he travels the world chasing challenging waves which also makes him a very worldly character, he is experienced over all of the surfi ng disciplines but chooses paddle surfi ng over tow-in as it is more “raw” and “in the stimulus,” and to top it off he is incredibly humble.

I could not help but to feel excited about him attending the Waterman Program and tried not put to many expectations of what I would see during his time with One Ocean. Needless to say, the expectations I had were greatly surpassed. He performed at such an extremely high level in the program, far exceeding the minimum requirements.

Th roughout the training, his recovery from intense physical stress was very quick which is a result of his dedicated preparation, his mental strength during the apnea training was very strong and his ability to think on his feet during the rescue scenarios was very impressive.

Skeeta is by far the strongest waterman I have had the privilege to train and I must admit that I oft en get great motivation and inspiration when I hear the amazing waves he is surfi ng and how hard he is training.Skeeta is not only an amazingly talented athlete but an extremely honorable and good-hearted man, I wish him the very best in his endeavours.
