"Our players learn better with two phonesand music going and with an íPad on the sidelhat's new."

l-l-l he ability to work well wíth Millennials, deflnedI U,, the Pew Research Center as those born

I bär*...t 1980 and 2000, has quickly become anindispensable part of the business landscape. Millennialsalready comprise one third of the U.S. workforce, and are

projected to hit 50 percent as earþ as 2020.The forces that shaped Millennials are powerful

ones: the exponentialproliferation of technologyand the common availabilityof instant, worldwidecommunication. The firstgeneration to grow uP withpersonal computers, Millennialsare innately tech sawy andquick visual learners. Becausethey came of age alongside theInternet, they collaborate well,

Stevgn G. Zylstra even over great dístance'

Technology Millennials are often deeplyself-reflective. Growing uP

as environmentalism hit its stride, their eco-consciousness is immensely important to them, andtheir concern about global impact informs where theywork, live and shop. Businesses that adapt to this newreality will flourish in the years to come.

Because Millennials care about work-life balance, their priorities can clash wíth those of existingcorporate cultures, particularþ at larger, hierarchicalorganizations. A study by UNC's Kenan-FlaglerBusiness School found that one in three Millennialswould prioritize social media freedom, deviceflexibility, and work mobility over salary whenaccepting ajob offet. This difference ofpriorities hasdriven the impression in some circles that Millennialsare entitled.

But the truth is that culture clashes are inevitableat moments of generational sea change. Rather thanbeing unfairþ burdened with the chore of teachinghundreds of new hires how to conform to an existing

system, the business world has been given anincredible opportunity to evolve and capitalize on thestrengths of a new generational cohort.

Consider the St. Louis Rams. Professional footballis already a young man's game, and the Rams arethe youngest team in the NFL: their average playerage is 24.L-years-o1d. While speaking to the WallStreet Journal, Rams coach Joe Fisher addressed thechallenge of reaching a new generation, "Our playerslearn better with two phones and music going and withan iPad on the side. That's new."

As a response, the Rams changed how theycoached. Two hour marathon meetings werereplaced wíth a series of focused 3O-minute sessionspunctuated with breaks. And because Millennialsprefer to know why a recommended action is best,drill-sergeant style screaming was phased out infavor of explaining the concepts behind strategies. After each lesson, the team hurries to the f,eld toimplement new skills in the real world.

Whiie the reforms were designed to increasecommunication with a new generation, the old guardhas seen benefits, too. Everyone beneflts from focusedmeetings, and having to distill lessons down to quick, actionable points has made instruction stronger.

Havíng to explain "why" to a younger generation hashelped root out outdated practices. 5:30 a.m. wakeuptimes didn't survive scrutíny. Why wake everyone upearþ only to lose time ñghting for the attention ofdrowsy players?

In 2015, Millennials surpassed Baby Boomers as thelargest living American generation. As a large age cohortwith an lnnate embrace of technology, their impact onsociety wiil unquestionably be the largest our countryhas ever seen. The companies that learn to capitalize onthe strengths of this nimble, thoughtful generation willquickly accomplish íncredibÌe things. GÐ

Steven G. Zylstra is president and CEO of the ArizonaTechnology Council.
