Assembly Instructions V1.1

A few notes before we begin:

· Each component is identified by a letter and a number, so it can easily be found in the circuit schematics and PCB (Printed Circuit Board). In this manual, you'll find them inside square brackets: [R3, Q2, D24...]

· All the components are placed on the upper side of the board (the one with the component drawings), and soldered on the opposite side.

· There are two ways of assembling the Slicer. The battery-operated version (covered in this manual), and the 15v version, for assembly as a module for a Befaco modular synthesizer. The battery-operated version does not require the following components: [Q1, Q2, R9, R7, R21, R13, R22, C4, C8, R6, I/O]. None of the versions need [R20, R7, R17].

Step by step instructions:

1-Solder the 42 diodes (1n4148)

[D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7, D8, D9, D10, D11, D12, D13, D14, D15, D16, D17, D18, D19, D20, D21, D22, D23, D24, D25, D26, D27, D28, D29, D30, D31, D32, D33, D34, D35, D36, D37, D38, D39, D40, D41, D42].

Watch their polarity: the diode's black stripe has to match the white line on the PCB. All the diodes have the same orientation, except for [D2].

2-Solder the resistors

Quantity Name Value Colour code

2 [R3,R12] 4K7 Yellow, Violet, Red, Gold1 [R10] 6K8 Blue, Grey, Red, Gold2 [R4,R8] 10K Brown, Black, Orange, Gold1 [R14] 10 Ohm Brown, Black, Black, Gold2 [R11, R19] 68K Blue, Grey, Orange, Gold1 [R16] 33K Orange, Orange, Orange, Gold4 [R1, R2, R5,R23] 1K Brown, Black, Red, Gold2 [R15, R18] 1M Brown, Black, Green, Gold

3-Solder the ceramic condensers:

Quantity Name Value Code

2 [C6, C14] 10 nF 1036 [C2, C3, C7, C10, C11, C13] 100 nF 1041 [C9] 100pF 101

4-Solder the electrolytic capacitors, watching their polarity. The longest leg is the positive one, and the positive side is marked with a plus sign “+” on the PCB.

Quantity Name Value Code

1 [C12] 47μF 47μF1 [C5] 2,2μF 2,2μF1 [C1] 10μF 10μF

5-Solder the 8 LEDs [LED1, LED2, LED3, LED4, LED5, LED6, LED7, LED8], watching their polarity. The longest leg is the positive one, and the positive side is marked with a plus sign “+” on the PCB.

Watch that they are well aligned, and at the right height, according to whether you plan on using a front panel or a box. The easiest way to achieve this is to solder one leg first and, when you're sure the LED is in place, proceed with the other one. If you use the panel included in the kit just, just put it in the end (touching the PCB)

6-Solder the Integrated Circuit [IC1] (78L08) watching its orientation, and the optocopupler (LDR1), watching its orientation as well. In this case, the shortest legs should go on the left (when looking at the slicer from the top), and the white dot should match the side with the missing corner on the PCB's drawing, as seen on the picture below:

Page 4: Slicer Assembly Instructions

7-Solder the integrated circuits' sockets and place the IC's [IC2=LM358, IC3=74hc4067, IC4=555, IC5=CD4029] inside them, watching their orientation. Both the IC's and the drawings on the PCB have a small mark that indicates how they should be placed. IC5 don't have socket.

8-Solder the ferrite [Ferrite+] (a small black cylinder that looks like a magnet), by putting a piece of cable or resistor leg across it.

9-Solder the minijack (1/8”) In/Out connectors [Audio IN, gate OUT, Sync IN, Sync OUT] and the power connector [J1].

10-Solder the rotating potentiometer [U$2]. Solder the 8 sliding potentiometers [SL1, SL2, SL3, SL4, SL5, SL6, SL7, SL8], being very careful that they align correctly. The best way to achieve this is to solder only the center leg of all the pots first, make sure they're all well aligned, make any necessary corrections, and then go for the other 2 legs.

11 – Solder the toggle switches, making sure they're well aligned. For this, use the same method you used when soldering the sliding pots.

This circuit has two types of switches: some have 2 positions, others have 3. They're easily identified by moving the switch back and forth. It's very important not to confuse them.

Two positions: [ON/OFF, SL/SEQ, SYNC. EXT/INT]Three positions: [SW1, SW2, SW3, SW4, SW5, SW6, SW7, SW8]

12 – Solder the battery holder [U$1] and screw it to the PCB. Place the battery inside.

13-Place the toothed washers on the switches and the rotating potentiometer, and then put the front panel into place, making sure that it fits easily, without having to press too hard. If you're unable to do this, it's better to remove it and re-adjust the switches and faders.

Once in place, place the big washers on the switches and screw them. Screw the rotating pot as well.

14. Put the caps on the toggle switches, and the Knob on the potentiometer.

15. Screw the rubber feet as shown in the picture:

Stop tightening the screws when their heads stop protruding from the rubber parts.
