Pre Assessment
O Try your best to answer the questions even if you are not familiar with the material.
O You will be given the same assessment at the end of this unit.
O You will not receive a grade for this test.
Part 1What do you already know?
O 1. Video segment
O The inner Solar System: The Sun 1:50 http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=3C5AE812-51E5-4A05-B463-A8256D23CD35&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=US
The sun provides the Earth with light, but the sun is too far away to provide the Earth with direct heat. If the sun is too far away to directly heat the Earth, how does the Earth get heated?
O 2. Think about this statement. How does the Earth get it’s heat? Remember when you explored heat energy and solar energy in 6th grade?
O Discuss with your groupO Use a note card to summarize the
thoughts of your group.
O 3. Share you ideas with the class.
Ask yourselves: -What do we think about what
_____said? - Do we all agree? Why? Why not? - Does anyone have a different idea? What makes you think that? - Does anyone agree? If so, can you explain it in a different way? - How does this relate to energy from
the sun? - Can you explain why your ideas make sense?
Teacher CheckO 4. The sun ……………throughO light energyO that is ………O and transformed into ……….
O Give examples from previous experience.
What we think about…..How the Sun Produces Light and
Heat
5. What we think.. How can we What do we find out? (Questions) conclude?
Part 2Explore
O 1. Video SegmentThe inner Solar System: The Sun 1:50-3:00http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=3C5AE812-51E5-4A05-B463-A8256D23CD35&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=US
- Retell the story of nuclear fission.- Describe the process in your own words.
O 2. What do you know about: - Discuss Atoms
MoleculesElementsCompoundsProtonsNeutronsElectronsNucleusProperties
- Read Atoms and Molecules in your student journal.
O Retell or summarize the information about atoms and molecules.
- What did you already know?
- What was confusing?
- Did anything surprise you?
Discuss……… how it helps to understand the question of how the sun produces light and heat.
What is a Nucleus?
O3. The sun is made of……..
and
- They are both very hot gasses. - All of the action takes place in
the nucleus of these two elements.
Questions - How is the motion of atoms and molecules related to the phases of matter? (Solids, Liquids and Gasses)
- How fast must these atoms be moving in the extreme heat in the center of the sun?
- The nuclei of hydrogen atoms in the sun have positive charges. What will happen when the nuclei of these atoms come together?
DemonstrationObjects with like charges repell.

3. Let’s play with magnets.
O 1. - Divide each group of four in half. - Tie the fishing line around the middle of each magnet. - Let the magnets swing freely. - Bring the magnets together and find the “like” poles. - What did you notice? Like poles ______________ and opposite poles ______________.
We are using magnets as a model for the behavior of the electrically charged atoms.
O Here are a few questions. - Can you explain what is happening when
you try to bring the magnets together with like
poles moving toward each other? - What would be needed to bring the
magnets together? - Is it possible to force the ends together?
What do you think would happen with stronger
magnets? - How does this relate to the explanation of
the nuclear reaction of hydrogen nuclei from the
video? How is it similar? How is the use of the magnets
different?
More Magnet FunO Locate the like and opposite poles of the
marble magnets.O Record your observations in you journal. - Draw and label a diagram of how the bar magnets and marble magnets reacted when the poles were close together. - Write how the behavior of the magnets is similar to and different than the behavior of the protons in the hydrogen atoms during the nuclear reactions on the sun.
4. Explain the Concepts andDefine the Terms
O What happened when you brought the like poles of the magnets together? Share your journal entries.
O What would happen if two like charged hydrogen atoms moved toward one another?
O Explain what happens to some (not all) of the hydrogen atoms in the sun. Why?
Part 3Wrapping It All Up
OWhat are your new ideas about how the sun produces heat and light?
OLet’s look at that video one more time.
- Discuss what is happening.

O Discuss the statement on the video that states “… as nuclei of hydrogen fuse to produce nuclei of helium there is a tiny loss of mass that is released as energy.”
O That nuclear reaction turns the missing mass (energy) into _____ and ______.
O Return to your What We Think Chart.
What we think about…..How the Sun Produces Light
and Heat5. What we think.. How can we What do we find out? conclude?
O Explain in your own words how the sun produces heat and light.
O Science Talk / Word Sort cardsO Complete your journal entry.
Ask yourself… - What do I think about what ______ said? - Why do I think that? What have I observed that supports the idea? - What resources do we have that help me with my written response? - What do my partners mean when they say _____? - Does anyone have the same answer but explain it differently? - Can we explain why the answer makes sense?
