Lesson GoalsBy the end of this lesson, students will be able to:1. Remember the history of God’s covenant with Israel.2. Recognize that God’s laws were established so that people

can live their best life in community with one another.3. Understand that to hear God’s voice is a call to obedience.4. Recognize that God’s covenant where God is superior and

people are lesser demonstrates the great love God has for us. Teaching Strategies

1. Ask class members to write down slogans or song titles that encourage people to do the wrong thing. For example: No Rules, Just Right (Outback Steakhouse); Have It Your Way! (Burger King); “It’s your thing, do what you want to do” (Isley Brothers).

2. Have class members to write out the Decalogue and what application they think it has for their lives and the lives of others.

3. Have the class discuss some moral dilemmas and how they believe people should respond:• The Death Penalty• Suicide• Abortion• Legalizing (or Decriminalizing) Marijuana

4. Play a brief clip from WingClips.com about a character having to make a difficult choice. (The clips on this site have been selected by believers, but screen them to ensure that they are appropriate for your group.) Discuss the criteria the character may be using to make his or her choice.

Key Terms• Wonderful – “Pele,” extraordinary.• Counselor – “Yaas,” to advise (extraordinary advisor).• Mighty – Strong, powerful.• Everlasting – Continuous existence, forever.• Peace – Shalom: completeness, friendship with God in

covenant relationship.Lesson Goals

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:1. Understand that kingdom living means that Jesus reigns in

their lives.2. Attest that some events and prophecies in the Old Testament

Page 9: Sm.Quarterly.templets.2018.qxp Sm.Quarterly.temp.qxd 9/2

point both to their historical contexts and to the future coming of the promised Messiah.

3. Learn that when enemies attack, God controls historical and future events.

4. Learn that God sent Jesus, who sent another comforter, the Holy Spirit.

5. Learn that God determines ultimate justice through the gift of Jesus.

6. Recognize the importance of prophecy during times of crisis.

Teaching Strategies1. Give each group pen and paper and one of the four titles

(Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace) in Isaiah 9:6. Each group should try to write a job description for Jesus based on their assigned title.

2. Ask students to list government agencies or departments – have them describe how Jesus’ government includes each of these areas (examples: Agriculture, Health, Housing, etc.).

3. Have class members think about the ideal church leader and ask how they should follow Jesus’ leadership example as Prince of Peace.

4. Talk about the advent season and the expectation it gives for the second coming of Jesus (Revelation 19:16).

Justice and Obedience to the LawLesson 1 December 5, 2021Lesson Scripture: Deuteronomy 5; 10; 27; 28:1-2Focus Scripture: Deuteronomy 5:1b (begin with “Hear”)-3; 10:12-13; 27:1 - 10Key Verses: “So now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? Only to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord your God and his decrees that I am commanding you today, for your own well-being.” Deuteronomy 10:12-13

Words to Know• Diligently – To show persistent and hard-working effort in

obeying God.• Covenants – The promises that were made between God

and the Israelites, who agreed to worship no other gods.• Fear – To demonstrate reverence to God. • Decree – A law or statute.• Unhewn – A whole stone.• Horeb – Pronounced: HAWR - ehb.

Lesson GoalsBy the end of this lesson, students will be able to:1. Examine how God’s commandments reveal the nature of

God’s justice.

Page 12: Sm.Quarterly.templets.2018.qxp Sm.Quarterly.temp.qxd 9/2

L.F.S./Sr./Int./Jr. • The Combined Teacher’s Guide for Winter Quarter 2021/2232

2. Appreciate the benefits of obeying God’s commandments.3. Pray for wisdom to make right choices and then take

appropriate actions. Teaching Strategies

1. Remind the class that Moses never entered the Promised Land because of his disobedience. He died and Joshua was appointed as the person to lead the Israelites across the Jordan into Canaan (Deut. 31:1-2; 34:1-9).

2. God’s covenant with Israel, given at Mount Horeb (Sinai), was confirmed. It bound Israel to the Lord as their absolute sovereign, and to his laws and regulations as their way of life. If they obeyed, many blessings would follow. But the Israelites would endure curses if disobedient (Deut. 28). It applied to the new generation since ancestors were dead.

3. Setting up stone monuments inscribed with messages to be remembered was a common practice in the ancient Near East. The stones were coated with plaster to make the writing on them stand out. It was also easier for people to see (Deut. 27:2-4).

4. The Mosaic covenant (Ten Commandments) given to Israel expressed the people’s duty to God and to others. These, together with the ‘judgments’ governing the social life of Israel, and the ‘ordinances’ regulating the religious life, formed ‘the law’ (Exodus 21:1–24:11; 24:12–31:18; Matthew 5:17-18).

5. This is the second week of Advent. We light the candle of peace. Before class, research scriptures that refer to God’s peace to share with the students.

6. Discuss the benefits and consequences of rules at home and laws in society.

Page 13: Sm.Quarterly.templets.2018.qxp Sm.Quarterly.temp.qxd 9/2

33L.F.S./Sr./Int./Jr. • The Combined Teacher’s Guide for Winter Quarter 2021/22

7. Bring art and building materials to class so youth can create a monument like the one in the text. Discuss how it may have felt for visitors to see it as they crossed the Jordan River into Israel’s territory (If Zoom classes, encourage the youth to use materials from home to create a monument.)

8. Unit I, “God Requires Justice,” presents four lessons exploring how leaders of God’s people must rely on God’s law as they administer justice. In Deuteronomy, Moses calls God’s people to be just and equitable; in 1 Samuel, David shows justice by offering kindness to Mephibosheth; Isaiah the prophet declares a reign of justice and righteousness; and the prophet Nahum tells of God meting out justice to Judah’s enemies.

David Administers Justice and KindnessLesson 2 December 12, 2021Lesson Scripture: 2 Samuel 9Focus Scripture: 2 Samuel 9:1-7, 9-12Key Verse: David asked, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul to whom I may show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” 2 Samuel 9:1

Words to Know• Kindness – Grace, favor.• Obeisance – To kneel and place one’s face on the ground in

an act of submission.• Restore – To return something to its proper owner or to its

original state or condition.• Mephibosheth – Pronounced: meh - FIHB - o - shehth.• Ziba – Pronounced: ZI - buh.

Page 14: Sm.Quarterly.templets.2018.qxp Sm.Quarterly.temp.qxd 9/2

• Machir – Pronounced: MAY - kihr.• Ammiel – Pronounced: AM - me - el.

Lesson GoalsBy the end of this lesson, students will be able to:1. Explore why David’s kindness towards Mephibosheth

demonstrated justice and equity.2. Appreciate the importance of keeping promises.3. Commit to demonstrating radical kindness towards others.

Teaching Strategies1. “Loyal” is translated to the same Hebrew word hesed, which

means used for God’s loving-kindness.2. Mephibosheth was the sole surviving son of Jonathan and the

grandson of Saul. Mephibosheth sustained injuries that left him permanently crippled in the army’s retreat that followed the defeat and death of Saul and Jonathan (2 Samuel 4:4). Since he was handicapped, Mephibosheth could not go to war and was therefore unsuitable to be king.

3. Mephibosheth was afraid to visit the king, who was treating him like a prince. But in spite of his feelings of unworthiness, Mephibosheth still accepted David’s gifts. When God offers us forgiveness of sins and an eternal home in heaven, we may feel unworthy, but we can have these gifts if we say “yes” to God.

4. This is the third week of Advent. We light the candle of joy.

Justice and Righteousness ReignLesson 3 December 19, 2021Lesson Scripture: Isaiah 9:1-7 Focus Scripture: Isaiah 9:2-7

Page 15: Sm.Quarterly.templets.2018.qxp Sm.Quarterly.temp.qxd 9/2

35L.F.S./Sr./Int./Jr. • The Combined Teacher’s Guide for Winter Quarter 2021/22

Key Verse: His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Isaiah 9:7.

Words to Know• Exult – To be very happy.• Plunder – Possessions acquired by force, especially during

wartime or civil unrest.• Yoke – Burden or oppression.• Tramping – The heavy step or treading of a person.• Justice – To treat people fairly.• Midian – pronounced: MIH - dih - uhn.

Lesson GoalsBy the end of this lesson, students will be able to:1. Examine the importance of the prophecy and impact for both

the people of Isaiah’s time and for today.2. Celebrate the justice, righteousness, and peace that the

Messiah brings to God’s people.3. Share with the world the hope of eternal peace and justice

found in the Messiah’s reign.Teaching Strategies

1. This is the fourth week of Advent and we light the candle of hope.

2. Verse 4, which mentions Midian’s defeat, is referring to the time in which Gideon defeated the hordes of Midian and broke their domination over Israel (Judges 7:22-25). In this same verse, it mentions “the yoke that burdens them, the bar….” In Isaiah 10:26-27, Isaiah predicted that God would destroy

Page 16: Sm.Quarterly.templets.2018.qxp Sm.Quarterly.temp.qxd 9/2

the Assyrian army and their oppressive yoke. It was fulfilled in 701 B.C.

3. Verses 2 to 7 are the royal song of thanksgiving and answers the hope of those who wait for the Lord to act to restore righteous Davidic rule in Israel.

4. Military oppression is symbolized by the yoke (10:24); the bar (10:24); the rod (10:24; Gen. 49:10); and the trampling boot.

5. Isaiah included the messianic references to hold out a message of hope to his readers, perhaps equating the new King Hezekiah (approx. 715 BCE) as the one who will bring this hope. The Gospel writers saw in these messianic references clues and affirmation of the coming Messiah, whom they identified as Jesus of Nazareth.

6. The poem in verses 2-7 follows the form of a hymn of thanksgiving, citing three reasons for giving thanks that each start with the preposition “for.” The first two relate to salvation from physical and military danger; the third is also somewhat political, relating to the birth announcement and the coming reign of justice and righteousness.

7. This text has the feel of a hymn for an enthronement ceremony with distinctive adoption language (see also Psalms 2 and 89). The kingly language is purposeful and parallels metaphors used to describe Davidic kings or Egyptian pharaohs.

8. This prophecy is given during the reign of King Ahaz of Judah and is part of the larger discourse of Isaiah 7–12. Ahaz was facing a military crisis and was considering an alliance with Assyria to counter the threats of an Aram-Israel alliance. Isaiah promised Yahweh’s intervention.

9. Isaiah 9:6 is included in the lyrics of the first Act of Handel’s

Page 17: Sm.Quarterly.templets.2018.qxp Sm.Quarterly.temp.qxd 9/2

Messiah and is known to many from this work (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f7jhk-IjDo). Tell the class, “Listen to this musical selection of Handel’s Messiah and be attentive to how it makes you feel.” Discuss the song afterwards.

10. Christmas cards can be created for friends; family; teachers;seniors in assisted living facilities; fire fighters; police; etc.Discuss the options with the class.

11. Be sensitive towards youth who may be experiencing a difficultlife experience.

12. Be sensitive towards youth whose family does not celebrateChristmas.
