GREETINGS FROM WKF PRESIDENT

It is for me a pleasure to address all participants in the 3rd Karate Championships of the Small States of Europe. A double pleasure is that the event is hosted in Malta, that this way shows the interest of the Malta Karate Federation, and its President Kenneth Abela, to remain active inside the WKF and the EKF, and we all appreciate this effort that this initiative can mean for them. These Championships are an opportunity to the National Karate Federations that are members of the SSE to compete in a leveling field conditions and to get the experience necessary for other challenges. In recognition of all before mentioned, this event has been included this year for the first time in the official EKF calendar, and I wish all the participants to enjoy the event, and a wonderful stay in Malta in this really suitable season of the year. To President Kenneth Abela, thanks again and our recognition for his generosity and interest. Antonio Espinós President World Karate Federation

GREETINGS FROM SSEKF CHAIRMAN

The Maltese karate federation holds the 3rd organization of the small states of Europe karate championships. The MKF has gained valuable experience in the past by organizing similar events and we are certain that they will organize with success the 3rd S.S.E.K.C on 17-18 September 2016. It is a pleasure to work with the MKF because they always make collaboration easy, positive and effective. Malta is a great place to visit for sea, sun, culture, attractions and all year round events. Member countries’ delegations will enjoy participating at the 3rd S.S.E.K.C and will certainly be thrilled by the natural beauties and the historic moments that Malta has to offer. Malta has been described as one big open-air museum! We wish that this 3rd session of the small states of Europe championships will benefit all athletes in their endeavours for achieving greater performance. Our aim is to make karate part of the multisport event that takes place every two years “The Games of the Small States of Europe”.

GREETINGS FROM MKF PRESIDENT

It is a great honour for the Malta Karate Federation to host the 3rd edition of the Small States of Europe Karate Championships here in Malta. Following the modest success that the Malta Karate Federation had in organising the 14th edition of the Mediterranean Karate Championships that were held in Malta way back in 2005, The MKF Executive Committee felt that organising an event of this magnitude is well overdue and a decision was collectively taken to host this event, once again under patronage of the World Karate Federation. The Malta Karate Federation wishes to publicly thank the various local authorities, including SportMalta, The Maltese Olympic Committee as well as The Malta Tourism Authority. Naturally, our Sponsors are playing a vital role in the successful organisation of this event and we thank them for their continuous backing. This invaluable cooperation coupled with the presence of an excellent team of professional, voluntary members within the Organising Committee, will guarantee an extremely high level of competition. Moreover, we will ensure that this competition will be a positive experience for all the participants as well as all the delegates and officials attending this prestigious event. On behalf of the MKF, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our lovely Islands. I wish you a successful competition, and above all, a remarkable experience!

Welcome to Malta In the heart of the Mediterranean

The Maltese Archipelago lies virtually in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, some 93kms south of the Italian island of Sicily. Yet Malta is just a few hours’ flying time from most mainland European cities and has excellent intercontinental connections. Choose from scheduled services or charter flights, many of which offer a convenient departure point from European regional cities.

Malta’s Geographical location in relationship with other European countries

WHAT TO SEE In Malta, you'll explore 7000 years of history yet live passionately in the present. You'll span the millennia with an astonishing array of things to discover. And wherever you go, the Islands' scenery and architecture provide a spectacular backdrop. The colours are striking. Honey-coloured stone against the deepest of Mediterranean blues. The Maltese Islands have been described as one big open-air museum. What makes them unique is that so much of their past is visible today. Delve into the Islands' mysterious prehistory, retrace the footsteps of St Paul or see where the Knights of St John defended Christendom. But Malta is no regular museum. Here life is lived to the full, so make time for some living history and action. Visit locations where Oscar-winning blockbusters were filmed or go off the beaten track into ancient villages. Marvel at the fireworks and revelry of the summertime festas and enjoy a packed calendar of events all year round.

Top Attractions

Valletta

Described by UNESCO’s World Heritage website as "one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world", Valletta is Malta’s capital city squeezed in less than one square kilometre of space. From the rich St. John’s Co-Cathedral, to the pristine 300 year old Manoel Theatre, restaurants, arts, monuments, traditional balconies, shops and malls, museums, forts and bastions, flea markets... Valletta has got it all. More information on Valletta

Mdina

Mdina is Malta’s medieval jewel. It’s distinctive narrow winding streets sheltered by imposing walls of nobles houses are simply beautiful and suggestive to stroll in. Hardly any signs of modern development are noticeable and the lamp-lit evenings are surreal. A number of attractions related to its history are well worth visiting and you also get the best views of Malta from here. More information on the Mdina

Sun, sand and sea

Even though Malta has a multitude of historic and cultural gems, the sunny weather, some of the cleanest sea anywhere and idyllic beaches remain a main draw for tourists. There are the obvious popular sandy beaches as well as the rugged but no less beautiful rocky coasts. Gozo also has a number of unique spots and Comino’s Blue Lagoon is material for glossy brochures. More information on Malta Beaches

Gozo

Gozo is a smaller rural island to the north of Malta just a half-hour ferry ride away. It is a vivid glimpse into what Malta was up to a few decades ago. A slower pace of life, welcoming locals, open countryside, raw rugged coastlines, sleepy unconverted villages and traditional crafts. Gozo’s must-see attractions include the Citadella, Ggantija Temples, ta’ Pinu Sanctuary and the Dwejra area. More information on Gozo

Megalithic temples

These prehistoric monuments are megalithic complexes dating as far back as 3,600 B.C. In all, five of these temples are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the oldest known freestanding temples in the world at Ggantija and the underground wonder of the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum. More information on the Historical Sites

Comino and the Blue Lagoon

Comino is a miniscule island half way between Malta and Gozo. In an area of just over a square mile, it packs a day’s pleasurable walk complete with a charming little chapel, picturesque castle and dramatic cliffs, a four star hotel with self catering apartments and the incredible Blue Lagoon. The latter’s turquoise waters must be the best spot for swimming and snorkelling anywhere in the Mediterranean. More information on Trips and Tours

PRACTICAL INFO Do I need a VISA to travel to Malta? It is advisable that you check about visa and entry requirements before making your travel arrangements. You can access the Malta Government Website http://www.gov.mt/ (Visiting or settling in Malta) or www.visitmalta.com for more information. Details can also be obtained from: The Immigration Police, Police Headquarters, Floriana. Tel (00356) 21240803 or 2124 0775 Fax (00356) 21242223 Email: [email protected] Getting About The beauty of the Maltese Islands for visitors is their size. Even if you are here for only a few days’ stay, you can see and do an incredible amount, from cultural sightseeing to action sports like diving. And you won’t waste time getting from A to B. The public transport network of buses covers nearly all the Islands. Additionally, you may wish to hop onto a VisitMalta Tourist Bus which offers two circular routes (North Route 505 & South Route 506) around Malta's main attractions. This tourist bus enables you to see the islands at your own pace, whilst riding on a typical Maltese bus, an attraction in its own right. Car hire rates here are good value compared to other European destinations. You will need your country’s driving licence to be allowed to drive in Malta. Insurance is available when renting a vehicle locally and for a slow-paced romantic form of transport, why not try a horse-drawn Karrozin? They offer a by-gone way to visit the sites in the key historic places including Mdina and Valletta. Language The official languages are Maltese and English. Maltese is a language of Semitic origin written in the Latin script. Over the centuries, it has incorporated many words derived from English, Italian and French. Climate Malta’s climate is strongly influenced by the sea and is typical of the Mediterranean. The Islands have a very sunny climate with a daily average of five to six hours sunshine in mid-winter to more than 12 hours in summer. Summers are hot, dry and very sunny. Day-time temperatures in summer are often mitigated by cooling sea breezes. Average maximum temperature in September is 24 degrees Celcius. Currency, Credit Cards & Banks The currency of the Maltese island is the euro (€). Banks & Currency Exchange Banks are normally open between 08.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and up to 11.30 a.m. on Saturday. Some banks work longer hours. Summer and winter opening hours may differ. Exchange Bureaux at Malta International Airport are open 24 hours a day. International bankcards are accepted and foreign currency is easily exchanged. Banks, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and exchange bureaux can be found all over the Islands. Many hotels and larger shops and restaurants accept foreign currency. Exchange rates offered by hotels, restaurants and shops may not be as competitive as those available at banks.
