Alberto Sánchez studied architecture at the University of North London in the UK, where he graduated in 1999. He earned a degree in architecture recognition by the spanish ministry of Education in 2001. Currently a member of the Architect’s Association of the Balearic Islands and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Before starting his own office he worked and collaborated with several offices as Caruso St John, London, Bosshardvaquer Architekten, Zurich and Coll-Leclerc (BCN).Main activities of the office involve public realm projects and a big interest for diffusion of architectural culture.

Badies, is an example of an extensive urban planning of the seventies with little urban qualities. In the last decade, it has undergone a population surge, necessitating an extension and refurbishment of existing health centre. The brief included works on existing building as well as an extension with new rooms for pediatrics, extraction and administrative staff to increase and improve the service provided. The urban structure of the site is formed by an endless maze of streets and buildings without hierarchy. In this context, the new health centre wants to strengthen the image an institutional building, in an area very much in need for hierarchy and urban structure. The commissioning of the project is set on an austere one storey building and the adjoining plot where building regulations leave room only for interventions that are a natural extension of the existing construction. The key factor to tackle was the fact that during building execution the health centre should remain open. The extension is proposed as an autonomous attachment directly “stuck” on to the existing building and a a series of phases have to be followed for minimizing the disorder to the health centre in operation. 1. Preparation of the existing building. Without interfering in the daily use of the health centre. Exterior “surgery” is done to existing construction in order to regulate the perimeter. 2. Construction of independent extension and when finished, reallocating the program from the existing centre.3. Refurbishment of existing building and demolition of separation wall for internal comunication.

Resources map:The use of locally produced materials is the start of this project for achieving two objectives, first to reduce the ecological footprint by shrinking the “resource map” and second, to locate the building in a context much larger than the physical; the economic and the cultural. One of the few construction materials are available on the island that do not dependent on imports are those produced by the precast concrete industry. The implementation of concrete block as the ”new traditional” construction system in Mallorca, has developed a thriving industry of small manufacturers that use local aggregates in the manufacturing of a wide range of small pieces. It is an exercise that explores the visual capabilities of common elements used in local popular. The façade is made with blockwork of the company Palerm, and in their process only local aggregate has been used. Tests have been conducted to determine the load strength of the blocks that are not used in the usual position. Direct action:The new extension of the Josep Sureda i Blanes High school is situated directly after the volume of the existing school, without separating or moving away from it. In order to minimize costs, shared access with the existing school, such as stairs and lifts have been proposed. The 9m span structure is solved with prefabricated slabs creating a free column space for future extensions.

The need for a temporary solution, before moving to a larger and new school, came to be solved in the refurbishment of the ground floor of a seventies housing block. The project is conditioned by two extreme factors, first, the intervention was to be built in a record period of two months and secondly the project had to adjust to a really strict budget.This impelled by the insularity factor, which further expands the delivery time of materials, only allowing materials in stock on the island. Since the work was to be executed during summer months, the palette of materials available was drastically reduced from the choice of the door handles to the light fittings. About 90% of the material used in the projectec was in stock on the island.Without considering the adequacy of resources and the need for rapid implementation, basic elements are worked as ornamnets as the only decoration in the interior. Lighting is one of those elements and its installation follow pragmatic considerations where the winding tube routes avoid obstacles found in the existing space. Thus, downpipes and rainwater pipes pass through the corridors and classrooms and shape the “luminous constellation”.The openings in the corridor area are linned by a wooden and metal lattice structure, protecting areas ciruculación of students and filtering the light to the interior.

From the very beginning the school teachers and the client wanted to promote a particular educational scheme based on the idea of “one-room school”. This experimental idea, that is to be tested in this scheme, is based on open spaces with little partitions where students develop a higher sense of respect for the others. The layouts enhance the permeability from the classrooms to the bigger shred space, where activities occur and some of the classes are held simultaneously.The proposal for the new extension of the existing school is set in three separate volumes located at ground floor level in order to optimize the movement of land and their settlement on the plot. These three small-scale volumes are within the language of children, and the school breaks its total volume creating and new scale closer to a house and the surrounding buildings. Each of these pieces arises independently and are situated on the site depending on parameters such as topography, vehicle accesses, circulation spaces and playgrounds. The arrangement of the three volumes generate “in-between” spaces that thanks to their geometric, spatial and material qualities, outdoor activities can be easily performed.The resulting typology consists of a ring of classrooms around the multipurpose room generating a deep building perforated by generous skylights bringing light and ventilation to these spaces.

The new school is set in a extensive low density residential area with no urban hierarchy.Our proposal structures the area with a strong institutional that wants to act as a magnet for urban pulse. The school is a compact block that potentiates sinergy and interactions with the users and the context as well as enhances the interaction between courses and facilitate movement, while it will create a strong institutional image. The idea of compacting allows us to release the maximum plot surface for the sports and recreation areas outdoors. This action of compressing the program needs of perforations for the ventilation and ilumination of classrooms, offices and circulation spaces. These perforations, as a result of the emptying of a solid will give the building a great volumetric complexity, where solid and void are of equal importance. The courtyards resulting from the drilling of the volume, they acquire a particular spatial condition becoming exterior rooms which may be used as outdoor classrooms. The exterior lattice around the building as a veil, will filter sunlight into the building and giving a glimpse of the outside. It protects windows of solar direct solar radiation while letting through indirect light. The lattice generating an active space between the inner enclosure and the veil through which evacuation routes are made on the first floor. The school is proposed as an structural system that, allows the possibility of changing throughout time without altering the structure. At the time of the project, there is already planned an extension to the building that will fit perfectlly inside the volume of the current plan.

The proposal for Repol Group headquarters, rather than proposing an end result or finished product, our aim is to define a that acomodates a wide range of possibilities. We propose therefore an intervention to define a framework and a variable content that accommodates the needs and constraints of the future user. A structural system based Vierendeel trusses allow us to get long spans that not interfiere with the production area. This system also allows us to think in a new location for the administrative areas that traditionally are atached to the front façades. The office area can be now distributed over a huge area on top of the roof, inside the Vierendeel truses. This location open the possibility for organize offices as in a ground floor, where terraces, seating areas, outdoor meeting areas and landscaped courtyards can occur. Access to the offices is proposed as a promenade, culminating in the offices of the company, passing through a sequence of spaces and events that happen along the way. The ascension begins on the ramp outside and leads to the “piano nobile” where entrance of the offices and laboratory occur. This ascending tour has two routes: one immediate access by an elevator or stairs to the offices and an other that brings visitors thruoghou the succession of various laboratories allowing us to peep in to production area carried out in the adjacent hall. The façade of Repol Group, manufacturer of polymers, we propose the development and design of a plastic material in which the company can actively intervene, thus closing the cycle of production and use. We understand the facade as an abstraction of the sequence of a polymer, an unlimited series consisting of the repetition of the same unit. The basic element of this facade is a hexagonal panel manufactured in an injection mold where the products of Repol will be used.
