BASELINE DATA MASTER CODEBOOK

The attached codebook describes variables included in two SPSSX datasets;LONGINT.EXP and COMBINT.EXP. LONGINT.EXP contains data fromestablishments (both public and private) with 20 or more employees (n=953).COMBINT.EXP contains data from all employers interviewed (n=l 308), includingestablishments with less than 20 employees (n=355). Employers in establishmentswith less than 20 employees received a shorter interview. COMBINT.EXP thereforecontains fewer variables than LONG INT.EXP. Variable names are the same for themost part, although sometimes prefixed by an S on COMBINT.EXP. (The dictionariesof the respective files contain full information on the variables.) The codebook isdivided into Part A and a very short Part B. Part A contains allthe variables madeavailable in LONGINT. EXP; the availability or non-availability of each variable withinCOMBINT.EXP is also indicated. Those available have a C in the right-hand corner.Those not available are flagged with NAC. The C means that the variable appears inthe combined file, ie it was asked or derived from both interviews. NAC means thatit is on only one of the datasets, ie was asked in only one of the interviews.
Variables which were in both interviews but were removed for reasons ofconfidentiality, ie you could identify the firm from them, are flagged ‘not on data’. BothWI and W2 are flagged in this way. Perhaps the explanation above is too concise.
Part B contains additional variables made available in COMBINT.EXP but not availablein LONGINT.EXP.
Questions which vary between Public and Private sectors are flagged with a P. Onthese questions refer to the public sector questionnaires for the appropriatewording/ordering of questions. Question numbers differ on the shorter questionnairesto those given in this codebook.
A setup file named EMPIND.EXP for combining employers data and, individual datahas been lodged with the archive. This file contains the case identifications for bothemployers and individual respondents. These have been matched, so that requiredvariables can be written in from the employers data or the main SCELI data asrequired.
