Introduction

Social Science 2 Teacher’s Resource Book

provides a wide variety of photocopiable worksheets

designed to broaden and reinforce the concepts

covered in the Social Science 2 Student’s Book

and Social Science 2 Teacher’s Book .

The worksheets allow a flexible approach in the

classroom. Students in the same class can be given

different worksheets according to their level: strongerstudents can expand on the material learnt in class,

and students needing more support can use the

worksheets to revise when necessary. Students can

also work together to complete the tasks. Teachers

with more contact hours can use the photocopiable

materials as and when they need to. They can be

used for revision purposes, for extension practice, as

progress tests, for assessment or for homework.

There are five categories of worksheets:

Reinforcement, Extension, Assessment,

Investigate and Science songs. Answer keys are

provided at the back of the book.

Science songs worksheets

There are four Science songs worksheets to complement

the songs recorded on the Class Audio CD. The songs can

be used with these worksheets or played as background

music while students work in class.

Answer keys

They are provided at the back of this Teacher’s Resource Book.

Investigate worksheets

The ten Investigate worksheets provide additional opportunities

for students to carry out simple investigative tasks either in the

classroom or at home.

The sugar beet travels in a big lorry. When

The sugar manufacturer sells the sugar to

Geysers and icebergs

Geysers are jets of hot water and steam coming

out from underneath the ground. Most ofthem are found in volcanic areas like Iceland,

or Yellowstone Park in the United States.

Groundwater in such areas reaches very high

temperatures and erupts at high speed.

Icebergs are huge chunks of ice floating in the

ocean. What you see is just the tip of the iceberg!

The biggest part is hidden under the water.

Icebergs can be very dangerous for ships.

The Titanic, a famous ship, sank in 1912 after

colliding with an iceberg.

1 Answer the questions.

Where can you find geysers?

Why can icebergs be dangerous for ships?

The weather

Mountains in the mist

Have you ever been to the Canary Islands? The

climate there is hot and it rains very little. Inspite of this, there are beautiful green forests on

some of the islands.

Winds from the east, called trade winds, bring

clouds from the sea. The clouds reach the

mountains of the Canary Islands. These clouds don’t release rain but they

produce a thick mist that covers the plains and the valleys. The trees, the

plants and the ground get very wet. The drops of water collect on leaves

and fall to the ground. They form little streams that water the plants. And

that’s how it is possible to find a big forest in a place with little rain.

1 Read and answer the questions.

What is the climate like in the Canary Islands?

What are trade winds?

What do the drops of water form? Tick ( ).

Clepsydras: water clocks

In the past, there were no clocks or watches like

we know today.

To tell the time, people used sundials. Sundials

use the position of the Sun to measure time.

However, at night, there was no Sun in the sky.

The first water clock was found in the tomb

of a pharaoh in Egypt but we don’t know who

invented it.

Water clocks used the flow of water to measuretime. They consisted of two stone pots placed

at different levels. The pot at the top was filled

with water. The water slowly dripped through a small hole into the lower

pot. The times were marked on the inside of this pot. In this way people

could tell the time by the water level in the lower pot.

1 Answer the questions.

What did a sundial use to measure time?

Could you use a sundial at night?

What did a water clock use to measure time?

Do we know who invented the first water clock?

2 Write the names of these ancient clocks.

1 How big are raindrops? Do this experiment to find out.

Most raindrops are small because big

ones usually break apart as they fall.

The biggest raindrop in the world fell in

Hawaii. It only measured 8mm, smaller

than your little fingernail!

Instructions

Work in small groups. You need:

a shoebox lid

a ruler

some flour

a bowl

a fine mesh sieve

Fill the shoebox lid with flour. Use the ruler to make the flour

smooth and flat.

When it rains, hold the shoebox lid out in the rain. Let 15-25 raindrops

fall onto the flour. Bring the lid back inside the classroom.

Place the sieve over the bowl. Carefully pour the flour into the bowl.

Shake gently.

Now, answer these questions:

How many big raindrops are there? How many little ones?
