From the Secretary and Founder – J .Raju

To all our donors, supporters, volunteers, funding and service organization and our staff. Greetings from SPPD! This long and challenging travel of 18 years has well shaped our Organization in achieving its objectives to the possible extent. Undoubtedly, it is an occasion which any organisation would view with a certain amount of satisfaction, since its journey to its eighteenth year and beyond is marked with several meaningful inputs into its realm of work. SPPD can proudly say that it has been able to sustain its direction and promotion of its identified values through these years irrespective of the various hurdles that crossed its way. This annual report seeks to capture the strides made during the year and also elucidates some of the important implemented activities. From the start, our services have gone up the scale reaching out to nearly 6897 children at 23 Evening Study Centres, 244 orphaned, abandoned, HIV affected children in our Children’s Home and 538 other very poor children with Educational Material Support, 712 women provided with life skill training and awareness programme to around 9776 women. Running through the 2nd year of our Children’s Home inauguration, this year the 2nd annual day was celebrated. With 33 children under its care, apart from ensuring free shelter, clothing and food, we also provide comprehensive medical care, spoken English, sports training, exposure trip and much more to Children at our Home. We have shared a comfortable relationship with the Ford India and Global Giving which has enabled us to work towards the empowerment of women at Chennai. In the light of providing vocational training in tailoring, many women have turned out to be skilled labourers, creating self income generating activities and seek better job opportunities. At the outset, we wish to place on record our sincere appreciation for this support. Our plan in raising funds through Electronic Clearing Services (ECS) with IDBI, Chennai for funding through bank services has brought excellent results. It would be quite appropriate to say that the growth of the organization and its work has been largely due to the immense support of funders like Joe Homan Charity, UK; Give India, Global Giving, REACH AXSHYA for their major grants in implementing many of our programmes and a special mention to individual donors, particularly Mr.Andrew McElroy and Mr.Simon Howard and for their continued support and guidance in our fundraising efforts abroad, donor community and various organizations. Their significant support has been the primary reason for the success of our programmes. As we reach this important milestone, we would like to acknowledge and thank various organizations and individuals whose support sustain and help us execute our mission. We look forward to continuing this journey with you. Together, we can bring about a vast difference in the quality of Education of poor, rural children and also in the socio –economic status of the rural communities.

Rosaleen Larkin Home takes care of children who are orphans, semi-orphans, abandoned, HIV affected and very poor children who have dropped out of school, who have ailing, elderly parents. Children from such families were left without attention and as they were neglected by their parents, they lack proper food, education, love, and care, which bring depression and deteriorate their health.

They are provided with free accommodation, food, uniform, school books, adequate stationery and health care. They have transformed from undernourished, unkempt illiterates to healthy, happy youngsters most of whom have completed ITI, Civil Engineering and Nursing courses. Many of these children are the FIRST in their families who can read and write. They will have more opportunities to support their parents, siblings or other relatives in the future. Till date around 244 children have passed out from our Children’s home.

There were 33 children for the year. 98% school attendance was achieved by our residential children who attend local schools. Most of the children have shown remarkable progress in their studies and have successfully moved on to the next grade. Regular morning and evening study is followed for the children and they show active involvement during their study hours.

Golden Star Awards was prepared (on mark basis) to have a proper analysis of the students activities and behavioural context and based on this children were selected as awardees. Small gifts were presented to encourage and motivate their progress.

Ms.Parimala, Caretaker of our Children’s Home visited the schools of our children at Mangalam and Musiri, to study the educational and behavioral conduct of our children periodically. Positive remarks were given by the headmasters of these schools on the behavior of our children.

Special Spoken English class presented by the Native Trainers Ms.Caroline, Ms.Jana Scheumann, Mr.Conor Brown, Mr.Gregory has helped our children improve their language level. This has shown a remarkable result in their academic performance. Computer classes were regularized for the children by the Care giver.

Health Check up Children’s’ health status was maintained regularly. Immediate attention and care were given to students with health problems. Every quarter the height and weight of the children were recorded.

I.1 ROSALEEN LARKIN CHILDREN’S HOME

Pre and Post examination had helped us to evaluate the educational progress of our children and prepare Advance Lesson Plan (ALP). This result assisted us in modifying our ALPs which targeted the main motto that all the students at the ESC must be capable of reading Tamil & English without any difficulties. On this basis the new advance lesson plan was framed.

Positive feedbacks about the year’s activities were collected from the Headmasters of students attending the Tuition Centers.

Advisory Committee Meeting were formed in all the 23 centers. The members of the committee were respective village’s Ward members, Govt. School Headmasters, Teachers, tutors & parents. They participated in the meeting & shared their ideas to improve the programme & their support to run the project successfully. During the meet, sports kit to each centre, educational materials like hand note, stationery and saplings were distributed to each participants of ESC. Every three months once - school teacher/ parents -meetings were held to help parents/guardians understand their children’s progress and to support their children’s academic efforts.

Annual Day / Sport Day celebration a rare event amongst most Government schools in rural areas was celebrated by our Evening Study Center students of all our centers in their School campus. The village Panchayat president, Vice-President, School Headmaster, Balwadi teachers, students, Tutors and local residents participated in the function. Various cultural programmes were performed by the children. The function winded off with prize distribution to the winners of the sports event.

Activity Club In every Evening study center an activity club is formed to take of all the activities of the tuition class. The students lead the club and hold the responsibility of regular attendance, nature clubs, enrollment of new students, kitchen garden activities, etc.

With 18 years of experience in running Evening Study Centres, SPPD marks its establishment in 23 centers catered to the needs of 6897 children. A special mention and thanks to The Joe Homan Charity, UK, Language In Group, Give India and other home donors for their contribution in funding towards this Programme. Children from Grade 1 to 8 levels are taken care off in the center. Regular classes are held on all working days which run through two hours. Besides academic work, students are also oriented on general awareness, health & hygiene practices, general knowledge, cultural trainings, physical fitness classes, their homework completion, training them in reading skills, emphasizing the need and importance of sanitation, etc

This year 706 children have been registered in the ESC for 23 centers. Attendance at the Evening Study Centers was between 90% and 99% with an average of 97% for all centers.

Kitchen garden promotion - As a follow up of club activity, 10 students in each ESC were selected to raise & promote kitchen garden as a model. This provides the children with handy fresh vegetable form their own backyard, which supports their nutritional content in their food. Houses to which saplings / seeds were distributed were oriented about backyard kitchen garden. The children have taken much effort in maintaining the garden rose by them & enjoyed the yield. This made them to continue & copy the model by other students.

Celebration of Important days Important days such as Children’s Day, World‘s AIDS Day, World Pollution Prevention Day, World Food Day, World Post office day, World’s Human Rights Day were celebrated to educate them the importance of such celebrations.

The tutors of each center were evaluated on the performance and thier activities in the ESC, their attendance at the review meeting and involvement in the meetings. Based on this, marks were allotted and tutors from Sinthampatti, Muthaiyanallur and Periyavelaganatham were selected as BEST PERFORMERS for the year.

Health Check up & Nutritional Support : Most of the families here are poor and agriculture labour is the sole source of livelihood. Sometimes due to uncertainty and irregularity of monsoon, agriculture collapses. Due to this, the income generation prospect totally declines resulting in poverty. Hence we had started this nutritional support i.e. providing dates or nuts for the children who are enrolled in our ESC.

Further the parents are educated on nutrition and health care, importance of education, etc. which we believe have shown good results this year.

Nutritional supplement in the form of dates, groundnuts were distributed to the children at the center.

Health and weight check up was recorded for all the children of our Evening study centers.

Tutors proceedings /Trainings : Tutors were trained with Physical Exercise and yoga to incorporate the same to the children at the centers.

Training was imparted to the tutors by the native language speakers Ms.Caroline and Mr.Conor Brown from Language in Dublin, Ireland; Jana Scheumann from Germany and Mr.Gregory, Volunteer from France to help our tutors improvise on their language & take it to the children in play method.
