SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE : KANDHAMAL

1. Location : Kandhamal district is one of the Southern located districts in Odisha.

It lies between 83o 30’ to 84o 35’ longitude and between 19o 34’ to 20o 34’

latitude. It is bounded by the Boudh district in north, Gajapati district in south,

Nayagarh district in the east and Kalahandi district in the west.

2. Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity

during April to May and cold during December to January. The monsoon

generally breaks during the month of June. Average annual rainfall of the district

was 1336.7 m.m. in 2011 which is lower than the normal rainfall (1427.9 m.m).

3. Area and Population : The district has an area of 8021 sq.kms and 7.33 lakhs of

population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 5.15. percent of the states

territory and shares 1.75 percent of the states population. The density of

population of the district is 91 per sq. kms. As against 270 person per sq.km of

the state. It has 2546 villages (including 167 un-inhabited villages) covering 12

blocks. 12 Tahasils and 2 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste

population is 1.15 lakhs (15.8 %) and schedule tribe population 3.92 lakhs (53.6

%). The literacy percentage of the district covers 64.1 against 72.9 of the state.

4. Agriculture : During the year 2010-11, the net area sown was 67 thousand

hectares against 4681 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy

was 1064520 quintals, 8 quintals wheat, 41413 quintals maize, 156 quintals

ragi, 126 quintals mung, 781 quintals biri, 3277 quintals kulthi, and 78 quintals

till, 2341 quintals groundnuts, 2528 quintals mustard, and 40985 quintals

potatoes. During 2010-11, the total fertilizers used in Kandhamal district is about

2.71 thousand MT with a breakage of 1.81 MT thousand nitrogenous, 0.58

thousand MT phosphatic and 0.32 thousand MT pottasic and the consumption of

fertilizer per hectare is 36 Kg.

5. Irrigation : During the year 2010-11, It is reported by District Agricultural Officer,

Kandhamal, the total irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are

39558 hectares and 13843 hectares respectively through major/medium irrigation

projects, Minor irrigation projects and other sources in the district.

6. Education : There were 1277 nos. of primary schools, 577 nos. of middle schools,

154 nos. of secondary schools and 17 nos. of general colleges in the district during

2010-11.

7. Health : The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt.,

Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 59 nos.

of the Allopathic medical institutions with 458 beds facilities. 19 nos. of

Homoeopathic dispensaries and 17 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district

during the year 2010-11.

8. Veterinary Services : During the year 2010-11, 20 nos. of Hospitals and

dispensaries, 74 nos. of livestock Aid centers were functioning in Kandhamal

district of provide veterinary services to the people.

9. Industry and Mining : During the year 2010-11, 103 nos. of small scale industries

have established with total capital investment of about Rs. 443 lakhs with 373

nos. of Employment generated in Kandhamal district. Besides various kinds of

handicraft works like Dhokra, Straw, & Canning Works have been developed by

the skilled workers and artisans of the district.

10. Power : Consumption of electricity in Kandhamal district during the year covers

32.299 million units and villages so far electrified as on 2010-11 is 1507 which

constitutes 63.3% to the total villages of the district.

11. Tourist : There are 5 nos. of tourist center such as Belghar, Balaskumpa,

Chakapada, Daringabadi and Putudi and identified by department of Tourism and

Culture, Odisha. During 2011, the numbers of Domestic tourists were 114865 who

visited the tourists spots of the district.

12. Transport & Communication : During 2010-11, 114 Kms. of National Highways,

291 Kms. of state highways, 109 Kms. Major district roads, 205 Kms. of other

district roads. 775 Kms of rural roads, 6781 Kms., of Gram Panchayat roads and

353 Kms. of forest roads are operating in the district.

13. Banking : As on March, 2011, there were 46 nos. of schedule commercial banks

having 923 crores rupees deposit and 275 crores rupees credit in the district.
