...local news updatepulpiThe Subdelegate of the Government in Almera, Andrs Garca Lorca, has visited Pulp to witness

the damage caused by the heavy rain and winds that have affected the area. Up to 40 litres per m2 fell during the early hours of the morning.

60 members of the Guardia Civil worked throughout the morning to restore normalcy. Four people were rescued, including a woman in Mojcar who had been swept 400 metres by flood water. She was taken to the towns Health Centre, but was reported to be uninjured.

Properties damaged include Pabelln Municipal de Pulp, a Works and Services warehouse, the Primaflor property, numerous basements of houses in Pulp, Mojacar and Turre, as well as some farms in the area.

almeriaThe offices of COAG Almera have already been approached by farmers seeking information on

individual tax deductions for storm damage to their crops. Most affected are outdoor lettuce and citrus and the structure of greenhouses.

The strength of the storm was such that the farmers remarked that it even brought down the Agaves known as Century plants.

Official advice from the COAG was that farmers need to have agricultural insurance in place for these eventualities. The spokesman added that the insurance of crops under cover is still open, in the case of tomatoes until October 31, and to 30 September for all other crops.

Farmers needing advice or help are asked to call in at their nearest offices for information on the benefits and cover available for agricultural insurance.

pulpiThe Alcalde del Ayuntamiento de Pulp, Juan Pedro Garca Prez has stated that the Consistorio

Pulpileo will open an office from Monday September 3 especially to deal with requests from local residents who suffered damage during the storm.

This office is on the first floor of the Ayuntamiento, and is open during the morning.

VeraThe Asociacin Vecinal Veraplayazul, (Neighborhood Association Veraplayazul) noted that the

storm has caused the classical problems of floods, which occur every year in the same places. With many coastal beach areas made unusable by the storm residents along the coast have

not seen any type of work to correct the Councils deficiencies. They state that the problem of flooding demands action, such as the provision of pipework and sewerage, the construction of watercourses and the cleaning of the river mouth at Antas.

Veraplayazul insists that the Council provide the necessary infrastructure for the coastal zone to ensure that there is no repetition of flooding episodes and resultant damage.

almeriaThe Direccin General de Trfico of Almera launched a series of regulatory measures and traffic

management to mark the end of the summer season under the name Operacin Especial retorno del verano - 2012.

It was in operation from 15 pm on Friday, August 31 to 24 pm on Sunday, September 2.The D.G.T. deployed the maximum number of available staff; Officers from the Agrupacin de

Trfico of the Guardia Civil, Centros de Gestin de Trfico, helicopter patrols and maintenance personnel and equipment.

The measures were put in place to ensure the maximum traffic mobility at a time of peak road usage.

wildfires make 2012 one of the most tragic summers on recordThe wildfires that have ravaged the Spanish

countryside over the past few months have made the summer of 2012 one of the most tragic in decades, with ten fatalities, 100,000 hectares razed by fire and serious ecological damage done to national parks like the Parque Nacional de Garajonay on the island of La Gomera in the Canaries.

The latest data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment (MAGRAMA) shows that, between January 1st and August 26th wildfires had destroyed 153,000 hectares of woodland, three times the amount lost to fires over the same period in 2011.

There have also been many more individual fires this year - 12,000 in the first eight months of the year compared with 10,518 over the same months last year.

The scant rainfall and high temperatures this summer, especially during July and August, have been the greatest allies of the wildfires, most of which were caused by human carelessness, although the number of fires started deliberately, like those in Cortes de Palls and Andilla, which destroyed in the region of 50,000 hectares, has also increased significantly.

Wildfires have caused considerable damage to protected areas this year, in particular the Garajonay National Park (La Gomera), Cabaero (Ciudad Real) and nature reserves in Alto Tajo (Guadalajara) and Fragas do Eume (La Corua).

Between August 4th and 8th the forest fire that swept across La Gomera, forcing the evacuation of a quarted of the islands population, devastated around 4,100 hectares - 11% of the islands surface area - 900 of which were part of the Garajonay national park, where tropical rainforest that had not been burned for over a century was destroyed.

Summer 2012 began with two of the most serious wildfires Spain has seen this summer - the ones in Cortes de Palls and Andilla, both in the Valencian Community - where 50,000 hectares were razed between June 28th and July 17th. Two people were arrested and charged with starting the fires deliberately. An army pilot died trying to put out the fire.

The wildfires that broke out on July 22nd in Alt Empord and La Jonquera (Girona) were especially tragic, destroying almost 14,000 hectares of woodland and claiming the lives of four French people.

On August 19th, the most serious fire in a decade in terms of woodland damage broke out in Castilla y Len, burning to the ground 11,700 hectares of forest in Castrocontrigo, in the province of Len.

In Campo de Borja and Aranda (Zaragoza) 3,500 hectares have been razed, 300 of them in the Moncayo nature reserve.

An environmental warden and a volunteer firefighter died trying to extinguish the fire that burned in Torre de les Maanes (Alicante) between 12th and 14th of August, and a member of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) died fighting the flames in the Sierra de Gata (Cceres).

Hundreds of firefighters, backed up by emergency military personnel and 31 planes and helicopters, continue to battle a huge blaze near Marbella. The huge wildfires have destroyed properties on Spains Costa del Sol over the past few days, and altough they have been mostly halted, officials say pockets remain. In the hills north of Marbella patches of land are still smouldering and large areas have been turned black by the flames. The blaze has already cost one life and forced over 5,000 people, many of them holidaymakers, to be evacuated.

autHorities are searcHing for relatives of a BritisH man killed By a gas explosion in His spanisH apartment

The British and Spanish authorities are searching for the next of kin of a 64-year-old British expatriate who died in a Costa del Sol hospital on Sunday, after suffering third-degree burns in a gas explosion in the Spanish resort of Torremolinos.

Shocked neighbours called the emergency services to the apartment of David Carney, who worked as a sound and lighting engineer at The Salon Varits, an English-speaking theatre, at 3am when they heard what has been described as a terrible boom.

Investigators believe that a faulty domestic gas cylinder exploded when the victim lit a cigarette after arriving home following a night out with friends.

Medics rushed Mr Carney to Malagas Carlos Haya Hospitals

intensive care unit, where he was sedated and put on a ventilator before he passed away on Sunday lunchtime.

To date, neither the local British Consulate nor friends and colleagues have been able to trace the victims next of kin.

Were having real problems as we dont have the names of Davids ex-wife, four children or sister. We need to find a next of kin to make arrangements for Davids body, which is currently in the Malaga coroners office, said Linda Barnett MBE, president of the theatre where he worked for several years.

We urge anyone who has any details to contact the Consulate on +34 91 3334 2194. He was a much-loved member of our team and he will be greatly missed by everyone, she added.

Spanish police say that whilst the explosion caused extensive damage to the building in which Mr Carney lived, no other apartments needed to be evacuated and no one else was injured.

spanisH inflation picks up to 2.7% in august

Inflation in Spain picked up to an annualised 2.7 percent in August, from 2.2 percent in July, the second consecutive month that the rate has risen, provisional statistics published on Thursday showed.

The national Institute of Statistics (INE) did not provide details, stating only that the result was due principally to a rise in fuel prices.

Inflation had been slowing for several months but accelerated again in June to 1.8 percent. The rate reached 3.5 percent in April 2011, its highest level since since October 2008.

Final figures are to be published on September 12.

refusing medical attention to foreigners criminal offence

The worlds largest tomato fight saw 40,000 people painting the town red - literally - in Buol (Valencia) last week.

As is the case every August for the last 67 years, trucks carrying over 120 tonnes of ripe tomatoes unloaded their cargo in the town whilst tourists

and residents waited for the firework to go off to signal the start of the internationally-renowned fiesta,

the Tomatina.Participants cannot start throwing tomatoes until the rocket is launched,

and have to stop once the second signal is given with another firework an hour later.

This is one of the five golden rules of the fiesta, which includes no ripping off or throwing T-shirts.Old hands at the Tomatina knew to

wear goggles to avoid being suddenly blinded by a squashed tomato, and to

wear T-shirts that they would not expect to put on again.

Some very creative participants had hollowed out watermelons and used these as helmets.

Others started out wearing fancy dress - costumes included pink rabbits, Samurai fighters, chefs with tall white hats, karate fighters and Spanish traditional garb.

Around 4,000 young people came from Japan for the fiesta, and Japanese reporters covered the event.

Thousands more came from China, South korea, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Latvia, Germany and France.

By the end of the tomato fight, as is always the case, the streets looked like a massacre had occurred - they were literally flooded with bright red juice.

The tomato pulp river is usually deep enough that visitors can actually swim down the street, as shown by the girl in the photograph.

Portable showers are always set up so everyone can rinse off the tomato pulp, although some opted to strip off and jump in the nearby river.

In the lead-up to the big fight - which has always happened on the last Wednesday in August since 1945 - live music concerts, discos, parties and parades went on for several days until dawn.

The Tomatina, which came about during a protest when a group of young lads began hurling fruit and veg at market stallholders, has been officially recognised as a Festival of International Tourist Interest for the last 10 years.

Banco cam to axe 1,773 joBs

as ordered By european commissionsaBadell Bank Has

announced tHat 1,773 joBs will go, mostly

staff from tHe cam BankA total of 441 redundancies will

affect its affiliate groups. The European Commission has

ordered the CAM bank, recently acquired by Banco Sabadell, to axe 2,231 jobs in exchange for its adjudication of the entity, the only way it can be saved.

Since there have recently been 128 redundancies, another 1,773 will have to be made.

Banco Sabadell says it will try to soften the impact with transfers and early retirement of employees where possible, but has not yet been able to give full details.

All the job cuts will affect what is now called Banco CAM with 1,332 of these in branches and of this total, 329 in central offices and call centres.

The EC also ordered Banco CAM to close 450 branches, of which 360 have yet to shut down.

Sabadell has pledged to keep all jobs in the province of Alicante and to maintain the 111 early-retiree names on the payroll.

In these cases, the staff had their hours cut and are claiming the corresponding portion of their retirement pension, with the salary for their reduced hours paid until they reach State retirement age.

Although they no longer work for the company, they are still on the payroll and receiving the shortfall in their pensions that matches the hours they are recorded as working.

Around 603 employees of Banco CAM who are aged 55 and over may be given early retirement, although their social security contributions will only be paid until they are 61.

Unions have criticised this, since in similar situations the social security cover is until age 64, but Sabadell says they are only now allowed to do so until the age of 61 by law because of the governments labour reform.

Other staff may be offered jobs in Banco Sabadell branches where these are available, although it could mean moving house.

Further meetings will be held on a daily basis and the redundancy notice will become official next week.

Doctors in the Valencia region say they may face criminal proceedings and possibly jail if they adhere to the health ministrys instructions to cease to treat foreigners who do not qualify.

The Spanish Penal Code means that refusal to assist a person whose life or health is in danger is a crime, and applies not only to medics but also to the general public.

This is in addition to all medical professionals code of ethics.

A total of 140 doctors in the Comunidad Valenciana, of which 31 are in the province of Alicante, have lodged a conscientious objection and say they will continue treating their existing patients, whether or not they have residence rights, jobs, or are

in the system. From Saturday, September 1, the Royal

Decree the equivalent of a bill of law number 16/2012 will come into force, meaning all non-EU foreigners who do not have an up-to-date visa or residence permit which will include those who have lost their jobs or EU foreigners with no social security cover due to being early retirees, not working and not on the dole or any kind of sick or maternity pension will no longer be entitled to free healthcare on the State.

Doctors have asked whether this means that they will have to start treating these people outside office hours from Saturday onwards, or whether it means that from September 1, terminally-ill patients can no longer be visited at home.

madrid metro crash leaVes 18 hurt

18 people were injured today when a train on the Madrid underground bumped the platform at the end of the line, emergency services report.

The accident occurred at 19.25hrs when the driver failed to stop in time as he was coming into the terminal at Prncipe Po station, the limit of the pera-Prncipe Po line.

Nine of the injured passengers have been taken to nearby health centres for a check-up and six of those have been taken to Hospital Clnico, and another three to Hospital la Concepcin.

The other nine were attended to by ambulance at the scene, and two of these have been taken to the 12 de Octubre hospital in the city.

huge wildfire reaches marBella in southern spainA huge wildfire is approaching the wealthy resort of

Marbella on Spains Costa del Sol, where the authorities have evacuated thousands of people.

Flames reached the Elviria area on the edge of Marbella early on Friday.

About 1,000 people have been evacuated from the edge of Marbella, about 3,300 from Ojen and others from a camp site at Alpujata, Spanish media report.

They include at least 300 British expats sent to evacuation centres, the Uk embassy told the BBC.

Marbella is famous for its up-market hotels and villas - it is a favourite haunt of wealthy foreigners.

Overnight the fire spread rapidly through a 12km (eight-mile) coastal strip, not far from holiday resorts.

Two people have suffered serious burns and some homes have been engulfed by the fire.

The Costa del Sol is one of Spains most popular holiday destinations and home to a large British expatriate community.

The British embassy says it is working closely with the Spanish authorities and consular staff have been deployed to assist those affected.

Much of Spains countryside was left tinder-dry this summer by a prolonged heatwave. There have been major wildfires in northern Catalonia - near the Pyrenees - and on La Gomera, in the Canary Islands.

The wind speed has dropped since Thursday and the air is more humid, so there are hopes that the Costa del Sol blaze

    can be contained soon.

More than 250 firefighters are battling the fire, helped by 17 aircraft dropping water to douse it, Spains El Pais news website says.

The fire started on Thursday afternoon in the Sierra Negra area of Coin, near Malaga

and has now affected an area of some 1,000 hectares (2,471 acres).

Part of the AP-7 highway was cut temporarily, but other roads are unaffected. It is not yet clear how many homes have been damaged or destroyed.

FOuR REgiOnaL hEaLth authORitiEs takE a stanD against ana Mats BaCkwaRD-MOving pOLiCiEs Regional health authorities in four

of Spains autonomous states have boycotted a summit in Valladolid in protest over the central governments backward-moving policies.

From Saturday, September 1, an estimated 153,000 foreign and Spanish patients will lose their entitlement to healthcare on the State because they are not paying into the system through being unable to find work.

This is in order to save the heath service 500 million euros, but doctors insist that it goes against the Spanish Constitution and flouts several laws.

And over 400 types of medication will no longer be funded by the ministry of health, led by Ana Mat, meaning those who use them will have to pay full price.

Contributions to prescriptions have increased for everyone depending

upon income, and pensioners now have to pay 10 per cent of the non-prescription cost of medication rather than, as until recently, receiving them free of charge.

She called an informal summit meeting yesterday of regional health ministers, but those of Andaluca, Asturias, the Canary Islands and the Basque Country did not attend.

They have put together a joint written manifesto condemning what they consider as backward-moving policies and calling for dialogue between the central government and medical institutions.

The manifesto also calls for Mat to respect the decision-making powers of Spains 17 federal communities, since they consider that the contributions made by these may in fact increase quality and efficiency in the health service.

It adds that no economic policies

should impose a social and financial model based upon restricting fundamental and basic rights such as healthcare, nor involve privatising any aspect of it.

And loss of principles of equity, cohesion and fairness could cause the social, political and professional support of the current health service to crack.

Doctors consider they could be guilty of the criminal offence of omitting to provide assistance if they do not treat immigrants without visas or foreigners and Spaniards who do not pay Social Security.

They also consider that not treating certain infectious or contagious conditions - everything ranging from the common cold or influenza to tuberculosis, Legionnaires disease or HIV - may spark public alarm and outcry as diseases spread out of control.

Ten people have been arrested after a massive group of people decided to occupy a branch of La Caixa bank in El Puerto de Santa Mara (Cdiz) last Tuesday. They are part of the Andaluca workers union (Sindicato Andaluz de Trabajadores, or SAT) who staged a supermarket sweep in Mercadona and Carrefour in cija (Sevilla) and Arcos de la Frontera (Cdiz) earlier this month, filling up trolleys with staple foodstuffs to give to residents with no income.

Those who escaped arrest several hundred of them say they will arrange a peaceful demonstration outside the towns National Police station. SATs spokesman, Diego Caamero, says all protests are peaceful and there will be no violence.

Staff at the occupied bank said the manager did not make any attempt at resistance and that the demonstrators were treated exquisitely.

indeBted town councils across spain are targeting motorists in a Bid to raise revenue mucH to tHe disgust of disgruntled residents.

Removal of free parking zones and an increase in fines for minor traffic infractions have all dubbed taxation by stealth by protest groups, according to a report in this weeks Telegraph.

The latest measures to be unveiled in towns and cities across the north-eastern region of Catalonia include the removal of free parking bays. The biggest outcry has been in Tarragona, a city south of Barcelona, where since the start of July, the council has re-allocated 3,700 parking spaces, forcing residents to pay for parking where they could previously leave their car for free.

Its a blatant attempt by city authorities to raise revenue, said Amanda Casas, a spokesman for Plataforma Stop Parqumetres, a local protest group formed to fight against the installation of more parking meters. And the underhand way they are going about it is shameful, she said.

The citizens have mounted a campaign, boycotting the blue zone pay and display areas and painting over the lines.

The council, which insists the measure is part of an effort to improve traffic flow in the city and not to generate revenue, reported that the backlash has already resulted in widespread vandalism of ticketing machines, costing an estimated 18,000 so far, and extra police have been called in to tackle the problem.

Similar measures introduced in resorts across the coast, including popular holiday destinations of Lloret de Mar and Blanes, have created similar outrage. A recent report estimated that more than half of Spains 8,116 town councils were indebted to the point of bankruptcy as they struggle to pay the bill for vast overspending when credit was cheap during Spains boom years.

Motorists are also complaining of the increase in traffic fines, for speeding and other infractions, insisting that revenue collection is the main objective rather than safety concerns.

Organisations representing motorists argue that radar speed traps and unmarked mobile Civil Guard units are increasingly placed not in accident black spots or where speed is a risk factor, but in areas most likely to generate fines.

One Madrid driver complained that she had been fined for not turning on headlights when driving through a short and well lit tunnel through the capital. It was surely an easy way to generate 60 and nothing to do with any risk posed, she said.

But its not just motorists who are feeling targeted.

In Madrid, Metro passengers are bracing themselves for yet another hike in prices as the city hall announced an increase of two per cent on the cost of a monthly ticket, raising it from 51.30 to 52.20 from September 1.

This follows an increase of 11pc by Madrids transport network four months ago. The cost of the fare to the airport has more than doubled in a year to 5 euros for a ticket from the centre to Barajas terminals.

It has also cut the number of entrances to the Madrid metro stations in a bid to save costs, closing access points at some of the capitals busiest stations. We are paying more for services and yet getting less, one passenger commented as she struggled with shopping bags outside the now closed entrance at Rios Rosas station, complaining that the alternative station access point is a three minute walk away across two busy roads.

DukE & DuChEss OF paLMa MOvE BaCk tO BaRCELOna The Duke and Duchess of Palma, the Infanta

Cristina and her husband Iaki Urdangarin, are back at their home in Pedralbes (Barcelona), after living and working in the USA for three years.

Urdangarin has requested temporary leave from his post with Telefnica in Washington allegedly to avoid tainting the company with any adverse publicity arising from his involvement in the high-profile Nos corruption case.

The Infanta and her husband arrived back in Barcelona with their four children a few days ago, bringing a temporary end to the Dukes employment with Telefnicas Latin

American branch which took them to Washington in 2009, and from where Cristina has continued her work for the Foundation la Caixa.

The legal investigation into the Nos Institute has soured the familys return to Barcelona (where the couple have lived since their marriage in 1997).

Telefnica has refused to comment on the Dukes sudden departure, and the Royal Household has expressed its respect for Urdangarins decision, which they had been informed about by the Duke in person in advance.

The UK has an extremely sophisticated and large network of double tax treaties. But how much do you really know about what a double tax treaty is there for and how they affect you as a British expatriate?

One myth is that you choose where to pay tax. This is not correct, as tax treaties are designed to decide where taxes on dif ferent income, gains and inheritances are taxable, when assets are located in one country and the individual is resident in another country.

Another myth is that income taxable in one country cannot be taxable in the other. This is incorrect and, in many cases, income remains taxable in the source country but can also be taxed in the country of residence. To avoid being taxed in both countries, tax paid in the source

country is of fset against the liability in the country of residence.

If tax payable in the country of residence is higher than that payable in the source country, you pay tax in the source country and then pay the dif ference in your country of residence. You always end up paying the higher of the two amounts.

The trick here is to seek advice to minimise the tax in both countries legally so that the minimum amount of tax is paid.

Generally, cer tain types of income and gains are only taxable in the country of residence and others are taxable in both countries. For example, capital gains on real estate, dividends and bank interest are often taxable in both countries (although not always). However state, occupational and private

Tax TreaTies Have a DirecT impacT On YOu as a uK expaTriaTebY DaviD FranKs, blevins FranKs Financial cOrrespOnDenT

pensions and annuities are usually only taxable in the country of residence. Government service pensions usually are taxable only in the source country (but not always).

Double tax treaties supersede national law and therefore take precedence over either countrys domestic rules. alBoX rBl quarterly meeting reportThe Albox Branch of The Royal British Legion recently held its latest quarterly

formal meeting at its usual meeting place of La Parrilla Hotel & Restaurant in the Main Square at Albox. The chairman Chris Pearce outlined the good work accomplished by the committee so far this year and also what is scheduled for the rest of the year. He warned of the impending AGM on the 15th November and said he and a number of other committee members were standing down, including the current Poppy Co-coordinator Jeff Hanson who will be sorely missed. He made an impassioned plea to the members for more to step forward and bolster this busy committee so that they may continue to offer the packed calendar they currently do. There is no need for application for a particular role, just join the committee and see how they like it and perhaps become more engaged later. For more information on this contact Chris on the details below.

The social secretary Bob Cowan then outlined the rest of the currently planned events. He told the members of the impending BBQ set for the 16th September at the Social Centre at La Piedra Amerilla (directions available with tickets) for the low cost of just 10 for members and 11 for non-members. That will include the BBQ itself and live music and drinks will be on sale from the social centre for 1 each.

He also went on to advise of the Walk, Talk & Eat event to be held on the 17th November, starting at The Grapevine in La Piedra Amerilla. Mike Gill has kindly volunteered to lead the walk through La Hoya, a nice easy course suitable for all ages and abilities. The walk takes approximately 1 hrs. with a stop half way for refreshments. Then its back to The Grapevine for a 3 course meal provided by Helen. The menu is to be a starter of melon or similar followed by a choice of chicken or scampi with chips and a sweet, with salad on the table during the meal. All this for the princely sum of 7 for members and 8 for non-members. There are only 24 places for the meal but if you want to just complete the walk you may do so for a small donation to the RBL funds.

Tickets for both these events are available from Bob Cowan on [email protected] or 608049490

These are just 2 of the many social events planned for this year by this busy and friendly Branch of The Royal British Legion in Spain, so if you want more details or want to become a member and help with The Legions good work for serving and ex-service personnel and their families (you dont need to be ex-forces to join) go along to one of the meetings or contact the Chairman Chris Pearce on 630 56 26 18 email: [email protected] or visit the web site at www.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/albox

chocolate may protect the Brain from stroke...and this time its the milk Variety!Eating chocolate may reduce the long term

risk of stroke, research has shown.

Men who consumed moderate amounts of chocolate each week were less likely to suffer a stroke over a period of 10 years than those who ate none.

The difference was small, but significant. Study participants who ate the most chocolate, equivalent to about one third of a cup of chocolate chips, reduced their stroke risk by 17 per cent. A total of 37,103 Swedish men aged 49 to 75 took part in the study.

Their diets were assessed with food questionnaires, which asked how often they ate chocolate. The mens progress was then followed for 10 years, during which researchers recorded 1,995 cases of a first stroke.

Previous studies have shown that chocolate may help prevent diabetes, control blood pressure, and protect against heart disease. Healthy antioxidant plant chemicals called flavonoids are thought to explain the health benefits.

Dr Susanna Larsson, from the karolinska Institute in Stockholm, who led the latest research, reported in the journal Neurology, said: The beneficial effect of chocolate consumption on stroke may be related to the flavonoids in chocolate.

Flavonoids appear to be protective against cardiovascular disease through antioxidant,

anti-clotting and anti-inflammatory properties. Its also possible that flavonoids in chocolate may decrease blood concentrations of bad

    cholesterol and reduce blood pressure.

Interestingly, dark chocolate has previously been associated with heart health benefits, but about 90 per cent of the chocolate intake

in Sweden, including what was consumed in our study, is milk chocolate.

The men who ate the largest quantities consumed a modest 63g of chocolate per

week. This is about a third of a cup-full of chocolate chips,

or just a little more than a Mars bar which weighs 58 grams.

Put into context, the 17 per cent risk reduction amounted

to 12 fewer strokes per 10,000 participants over 10 years, or 100,000

    person years.

The research was followed up by a larger analysis of data from five studies in Europe and the US that included 4,260 stroke cases. This showed that people eating the most chocolate were 19 per cent less likely to have a stroke than those consuming the least.

For every increase in chocolate consumption of about 50 grams per week, stroke risk decreased by about 14 per cent.

In their paper, the scientists said further studies were needed before any

recommendations could be given about chocolate consumption. They added: Because chocolate is high in sugar, saturated fat, and calories, it should be consumed in moderation.

most popular sports supplement Banned in Britainfears it may haVe lethal side-effectsA sports supplement popular

with fitness fanatics has been banned in Britain because of fears it may have lethal side-effects. The drink Jack3D contains a stimulant known as DMAA (dimethylamylamine) that has been linked to high blood pressure, headaches, vomiting,

stroke and even a death. The Uks medicines

watchdog MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) has ruled it is unlicensed and all other DMAA containing products need to be removed from the market to protect public safety. The decision follows similar

warnings around the world, including in the US and Australia where a man died after buying DMAA online.

Jack3d is said to boost energy, concentration and metabolism. But DMAA, most commonly used as a workout aid or dietary supplement, can have a physiological effect on the body by narrowing the arteries and raising the heart rate, said the MHRA. This has been linked to suspected adverse drug reactions worldwide, ranging from shortness of breath to heart attacks.

An MHRA spokesperson said: Jack3d is mainly bought over the internet although it is also available in sports stores specialising in work out products.

If we find a shop selling it we will send them a written reminder asking them to remove it from their shelves. If they ignore this then our enforcement officers will move in and begin legal action. It is the most popular sports supplement in the Uk because it is a stimulant that allows you to work out for longer. But it is for people who are really into their fitness. your average person who goes to the gym once or twice a week is unlikely to have ever used it.

    USING A MOBILE PHONE, TABLET

OR LAPTOP BEFORE GOING TO BED LEADS

    TO SLEEP TROUBLES

    ACCORDING TO NEW RESEARCH.

Researchers at the Lighting Research Centre, which is part of New yorks Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, have discovered that two or more hours of exposure to backlit devices, such as a smartphone or tablet, suppresses melatonin.

This suppression can lead to trouble sleeping at night, especially in teenagers.

Mariana Figueiro, director of the LRCs Light and Health Program, who led the team on this piece of research, said: Our study shows that a two-hour exposure to light from self-luminous electronic displays can suppress melatonin by about 22 per cent.

Stimulating the human circadian system to this level may affect sleep in those using the devices prior to bedtime.

Consequently she recommends dimming the brightness on backlit devices to minimize melatonin suppression. But other similar pieces of research go a step further and urge people to have a total break from all devices for several hours before going to sleep.

However, most people I know cannot resist checking their emails, social networks and news feeds throughout the evening.

At the end of last year car company Volkswagen agreed to turn off email to workers with Blackberry devices, in a bid to help with their employees work-life

    balance.

The business agreed to only push emails to German staff 30 minutes before they are due to start work and stop them 30 minutes after they are due to finish work.

While I am not sure this is practical for most companies, which operate globally and around the clock, or even necessary, it is up to us as individuals to learn from comprehensive research and amend our behaviour accordingly.

For instance, how many people do you know still use an alarm clock? Most people now tend to rely upon their phones, iPods or tablet devices to wake them up.

While it makes sense to make use of the increasing number of shiny devices we have cluttering up our bedside table, this simple act of setting your mobile phone alarm each night often leads to a game being played, a work email being checked or a tweet being posted simply by the device being in your hands.

The return of the good old fashioned alarm clock, combined with a decent amount of discipline, in a bid to let ourselves actually get some proper rest before the whole digital cycle begins again, is whats necessary to preserve our health in a world which never seems to switch off.

The key could be to talk alot but not to gossip and criticise others. A study of 250 centenarians published in the journal Aging, found they tended to be optimistic and expressed emotions freely by talking openly to friends and family. However, they suppressed the urge to talk ill of others, said researchers from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New york.

craft market at the Vera hotel6th october 2012 - 2pm

it has been announced that the organisers of the vera half Marathon have introduced an additional feature to the day. a spokesman for the vera & District Lions Club said we have introduced the Craft Market because we believe it will create a lot of interest for the people attending the vera half Marathon. we will have a large number of runners, their supporters and the public coming to the vera hotel. the race will start and finish at the car park to the rear of the vera hotel. Many of the supporters and the public are very likely to stay at the event all afternoon and evening where they will be entertained by the Bay Radio Road show. the Craft Market will give them the opportunity to browse while the runners are taking part in the race. the vera half Marathon is drawing interest from competitors and supporters from all over the spain and the uk

the spokesman went on to say the Craft Market will be located close to the entrance and next to the centre of all the activities, giving public easy access to the stalls, and the stall holders the best opportunity to sell their products. the runners are required to check in at 2pm so they will be arriving with their supporters between 2pm and 4pm when the race starts. the Craft Market will be the obvious area for people to browse when waiting for the competitors to return to the finish line. in order to make the Craft Market interesting we would welcome a good cross section of craft stalls, making this a successful feature of the day

space will be allocated on a first to reserve basis and not, who arrives earliest on the day. the cost for a stall will be 5euros payable on the day. space could well be limited as we are expecting a very good response and recommend that you book your stall early. i do emphasise that this is a craft market and not a rastro or general market. stall holders wishing to book should email [email protected] giving their contact details and the product(s) they are planning to sell on their stall or telephone the same details to 634338733. all stall holders must be onsite by 1.30pm. stall holders arriving after 1.30pm may be refused entry.

in addition to the Craft Market we have Bay Radio Road show who will be providing the commentary during the afternoon. vera hotel is cooking on the Bar-B-Q and of course there will be a full range of tapas in the bar. a band will be playing in the evening following the presentation of 27 trophies. this promises to be a very good day.

    weird & wonderful news......Butterflies more

    endangered than tigersBumBleBees, Beetles and

Butterflies are at greater risk of

    extinction than lions and tigers,

according to a gloBal study By the Zoological

    society of london

The biggest study of invertebrates ever conducted found that one in five is at risk of dying out; this can affect humans by threatening crops and food supplies.

Prof Jonathan Baillie, the director of conservation at the Zoological Society, said insects, slugs and snails may not be as glamorous as lions or dolphins but are just as important to providing the food we eat and the countryside we love.

These critters form the basis of many of the essential benefits that nature provides; earthworms recycle waste nutrients, coral reefs support a myriad of life forms and bees help pollinate crops, he said. If they disappear, humans could soon follow.

In Britain, critically endangered invertebrates include species of bumblebee that keep the countryside full of flowers and freshwater pearl mussels that filter the water in

our rivers. The society blamed pollution, loss of habitat and climate change for killing off invertebrates and urged the public to take action by demanding that food is farmed in a more sustainable way and growing insect-friendly plants in their garden.

Previous international studies have focused on groups of animals such as mammals and birds. As invertebrates make up 97 per cent of species, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the UN body in charge of ensuring that animals do not become extinct, asked the society to lead a new study. More than 12,000 species, from giant squid to midges, were studied around the world. There are 1.5 million known invertebrates, although eight million species are thought to exist even if not yet discovered.

Prof Baillie said scientists were shocked by the results.

We knew that roughly one fifth of vertebrates and plants were

threatened with extinction, but it was not clear if this

was representative of the small spineless creatures that make up the majority of life on the planet, he said. The initial findings in this report indicate that 20 per cent of all species may be

    threatened.The most threatened

group are freshwater invertebrates because of

the invasive signal crayfish from America. Dams and pollution from

nitrates used in fertilisers on fields have also played a part.

Marine species, including foods such as shrimp, squid and crab, are most at risk of ocean acidification, which threatens shell-building molluscs and coral.

Insects on land are being driven out by human development such as cities and pollution caused by cars and factories. All species are in danger from further habitat loss caused by climate change.

Prof Baillie said that invertebrates help store carbon at the bottom of the ocean, filter water, decompose waste, pollinate important crops and are an essential part of the food web, ultimately feeding hundreds of millions of people.

Even pests have a place in the ecosystem, he said. We ignore the loss of invertebrates at our peril, as they provide many of the ecosystem services from which humans benefit.

    rajoy defends Vat

increase The President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, met

at Moncloa Palace with the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, to analyse the situation of the European Union and the Eurozone, as well as the measures that the Spanish Government has implemented to reduce the public deficit and meet the commitments made by the country to its European partners.

During the joint press conference offered by the two leaders after their meeting on Tuesday, Mariano Rajoy stressed that the Government will continue making reforms to reduce the deficit and will continue restructuring the financial system. The challenge is to generate economic activity, to grow, to create jobs, and from then on, things will get better. That is the main priority of the Government during this term of office. It is difficult, but it can be done, he said.

As regards the financial reform, he announced that the capital needs of Spanish banks will be less than the maximum amount of 100 billion euros of aid that its European partners are prepared to loan to Spain. He also explained that the increase in public debt is only temporary.

Mariano Rajoy reiterated to Herman Van Rompuy the need to involve Member States and European institutions to ensure the stability of the markets and of the Euro, as well as to set a clear course for the European Union to follow in order to meet future challenges. In his opinion, this course inevitably involves greater integration of European economies and achieving an economic and monetary union.

In this respect, the President of the Government recalled that Spain has already presented a proposal on a banking union and fiscal union. It is very important for us to have a banking union by December, a sole supervisory body and a deposit guarantee fund. It is very important for us to be able to proceed to the direct recapitalisation of the banks by European institutions. It is also very important that we resolve the problems of the Eurozone as quickly as possible, particularly those that affect doubts surrounding

    the Euro, he said.

Rajoy brought up the statements made by the President of the European Central Bank (ECB), Mario Draghi, and those made by other international bodies that consider it unacceptable for there to be differentials between the risk premiums in Europe that do not correspond to the basics of the economy.

The risk premium remains very high; but I believe that very significant steps have been taken to enhancing the irreversibility of the Euro and I believe that at this time, European leaders in all countries are telling all those who want to listen that the Euro is a serious currency, an irreversible currency and that there is no going back on the European integration process, he said.

On another note, according to La Moncloa, Rajoy denied that Spain is negotiating the conditions for a bailout with Europe, the Government has not made any request to this effect.

The President of the Government and the President of the European Council also tackled the situation of Greece. Mariano Rajoy considers that if Greece or any other country pulls out of the Eurozone, this would be a collective disaster, it would not only be a Greek problem, but rather a collective disaster for Europe as a whole, one which we should in no way allow to happen.

Mariano Rajoy stressed that central government will not ignore the problems of the autonomous regions and will help Catalonia, which has requested access to the Autonomous Region Liquidity Fund.

We will help Catalonia in the same way as we help the rest of the autonomous regions. What is important, starting with central government and continuing with the autonomous regions and local councils, is to meet our commitments to public deficit and public debt, he pointed out.

    ARTICLE COURTESy OF WWW.kyERO.COM

    Q. I have received a letter from the tax office demanding I pay non resident income tax, and that I must pay up for the last four years. I have never made any income from my property. What is this all about?

    A. Our government needs to collect to correct its deficit. if you are a NON reSiDeNT of Spain and own a property you MuST file a non-resident income tax return even if you do not rent out your property. Do not confuse with rates (iBi), which is generally paid by direct debit.

Towards the end of 2011 the Spanish tax authorities decided to clamp down on non-resident property owners who have not been paying this non-resident income tax. They have created a special task force dedicated to pursue non -residents not paying this tax.

Every year normally using s fiscal representative you should be filing a non-resident hypothetical income tax return (shortly wealth tax also). if you are not paying this tax it is necessary that you take control of the situation by contacting the tax authorities, your solicitor or your tax advisor.

if you have doubts regarding if you are already paying this tax it is probably because you are not, as it requires the presentation of a tax form etc.

The good news is that:1. The tax is not generally a very high amount.

    2. If you have not been paying, by law they cannot demand payment for more than four years back taxes.

Our advice: Start paying the tax because if you do not they will be contacting you with the risk of you not actually being hear to receive their letter etc

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, says the countrys new wave of austerity measures are necessary to maintain the state welfare system. Rajoy made the remarks to an audience gathered for a party speech in the north-west a u t o n o m o u s community of Galicia. He said the governments value-added tax hike was a painful but necessary measure.

Mariano Rajoy, Spanish Prime Minister, said, Today a painful measure was enforced: The VAT hike. I am aware this is a sacrifice that arrives at a very difficult moment for many Spaniards. But I will tell you one thing: We adopted this measure because it was essential. It was the only one we could take to maintain public services whilst state revenues fall.

The decision to increase the countrys VAT rate is part of a raft of austerity measures designed to remove 65 billion Euros from the public deficit by 2014. The hike leaves small businesses worrying about their future and cash-strapped consumers counting their pennies. Everyday living costs, like heating, phone bills and clothes are all made more expensive. Some larger companies say they will not pass the higher cost on to their customers. That has smaller businesses concerned that they will not be able to compete, as they are unable to squeeze margins in the same way as the big firms. SOURCE: CCTV.COM
