DESCRIPTION
Overview of Solarmer Energy, Inc.TRANSCRIPT
Solarmer Energy, Inc. Solarmer Energy, Inc. is a developer of flexible, transparent
plastic solar panels which generate low-cost, clean energy from
the sun. These solar panels will transform the renewable energy
industry, because they have the potential to drive the cost down
to 12-15 cents/kWh and less than $1/Watt. This is the first solar
technology capable of generating electricity on par with
conventional fuel costs.
As a result of this cost advantage and the other features and benefits of Solarmer’s solar panels, this technology
can open up applications that are not addressable by existing solar technology today. As a result of the light
weight, flexibility, attractiveness and low cost, they can be incorporated into any portable device or material that
requires power. The most valuable long term commercial application, however, is power windows (windows
capable of turning light into energy). This technology has the potential to move the effort for net zero power
buildings forward tremendously. The flexibility of the technology will also allow for use in smart fabrics, which
can provide power to individuals through clothing, tents, umbrellas, etc.
Solarmer is completing their pilot manufacturing line to demonstrate high throughput and low cost production of
its plastic solar panels. Production samples will be available early 2010, with our product launch following in the
1st Quarter of 2011.
Solarmer was founded in 2006 to commercialize this
technology, which was first developed by Professor
Yang Yang at the California NanoSystems Institute at
UCLA. The company licensed this technology from
UCLA and additional key technology developed by
Professor Luping Yu at the University of Chicago.
Solarmer was founded on the principle that there must be a better way to provide energy to consumers for everyday use. Better, renewable, cost effective, cleaner and wireless energy. Our company strives to provide power anytime, anywhere, to anyone with minimal impact on the environment.

Pilot Manufacturing line
Location: El Monte, California Operational: Q2 2010 Process: Roll to Roll Efficiency: 3% Lifetime: 1 to 3 years. Weight: ~ 100g/m2
Product Launch: Q1 2011 Cost: 30-50 $/m2 Environmental Profile: Non-toxic process. Recyclable panels.
The Technology Solarmer’s innovative photovoltaic technology is based on a
special class of plastics - conjugated polymers, which were
discovered to have electrical conductivity in the 1970s. Since
then, these polymers have been used for various electronic
and optical devices such as light emitting diodes, thin-film
transistors, memory devices, and photovoltaic cells. Plastic
solar panels, based on such conjugated polymers, are also
referred to as organic solar panels or organic photovoltaics.
Some of the advantages of plastic solar panels over their
traditional inorganic counterparts include, low cost of
manufacturing, flexibility, easy processing over large areas,
variety of colors and transparency, light weight, customizable
shapes and sizes, easy integration, better performance in low
light, and newer materials with optimized energy band-gaps
for higher efficiency.
Applications Solarmer’s plastic solar panels will be the next generation of
solar technology, creating new markets that are not currently
addressable with conventional silicon solar panels. While
providing key attributes and convenience, plastic solar panels
are much more cost effective than silicon solar panels. The
following are Solarmer’s 3 major applications areas:
• Portable Electronics
• Smart Fabrics
• Building Integrated Photovoltaics
