Daylighting Facts

Productivity Productivity gains of 6 - 16%, including decreased absenteeism and

improved quality of work. Companies spend an average of 70 times as much money (per square foot per year) on employee salaries as on energy, therefore an increase of just one percent in productivity can result in savings that exceed the company’s entire energy bill. Rocky Mountain Institute

Most schools in the Netherlands have naturally lit classrooms, less for the students than for an awareness of how important it is to maintain the most productive and healthful workplaces for teachers. An Atlanta-based research firm recently found teachers in the U.S. place similar emphasis on their work environments, with 89 percent of 1,000 public school teachers surveyed reporting that classroom design was important for teacher retention.

Daylighting Facts

Increased Sales Sales in Wal-Mart’s Lawrence, Kansas store were significantly higher in the side of the

store that utilized skylights than the same products displayed at other Wal-Mart stores. As a test, products were swapped from the artificially lit to the daylit sections and those located under the skylights again had significantly higher sales while those shifted to the artificial lights returned to their national sales average. Wall Street Journal

1999 Study of chain with 108 stores where 2/3 of the stores were daylit with skylights and 1/3 were not. The daylit stores had 40% higher sales. 1999 - Heschong Mahone Group for Pacific Gas & Electric Company (www.h-m-g.com)

2003 Study of 73 store Chain in CA from 1999-2003 (24 stores with significant daylight) found daylight had the following effects: [Heschong Mahone Group for Pacific Gas & Electric Company (www.h-m-g.com)] 0-6% Increase in Sales (More Daylit Hours = More Sales), with highest =40%. During 2001 Energy Crisis, Avg. increase = 5.5%. Employees reported higher satisfaction with lighting quality. Profit from increased sales worth 19+ times value of energy savings.

Customer surveys routinely report that daylit stores appear bigger, cleaner, betterorganized and more appealing.

Daylighting Facts

Improved Student Performance A recent study conducted by the Heschong Mahone Group for Pacific Gas &

Electric Company tested 21,000 students in three states and found that those in classrooms with the most daylighting scored 20% higher on math tests and 26%higher on reading tests in one year than those with the least. Heschong Mahone Group for Pacific Gas & Electric Company (www.h-m-g.com)

A one-year Swedish study of 90 school children showed that the lack of daylight can disrupt internal body clocks, resulting in significant psychological and physiological impairment. Conclusion: work in classrooms without daylight negatively influenced children’s ability to concentrate and cooperate and may eventually impact annual body growth and sick leave. National Renewable Energy Laboratory Report, “Daylighting in Schools: Improving Student Performance and Health at a Price Schools Can Afford,” 2000

Photobiologist John Nash, Ph.D., reported that hyperactive children with confirmed learning disabilities calmed down completely and rapidly overcame their learning and reading problems while in a full-spectrum lighting environment. This is the type of lighting that most closely mimics and produces the effects of natural light.

The use of natural light in classrooms reduced reported incidents of aggressive, disruptive and destructive behavior among students. International Journal of Biosocial Research

Daylighting Facts

Greater Occupant Well Being and Satisfaction Employees who sit near windows have 20% fewer symptoms common

to workers in “sick buildings.” The conclusion: Give people light and spend less on health care. U.S. Department of Energy

Absenteeism rates dropped 25% after natural light was introduced to PP&L’s workforce. Pennsylvania Power & Light

Reduced Environmental Impact of a New Building (1) 93W (3-lamp FO32T8) fixture operating 6 hours/day, 7 days/week, 52

weeks/year uses 203 kWh of electricity. Offsetting this one fixture with daylight prevents:

♦ 13.4 lbs of CO2 Emissions/yr for Coal-based generation♦ 4.5 lbs of CO2 Emissions/yr for Oil/Gas-based generation

Simple Design Solution

Application Notes Key Technology Concepts:

• Top lighting product to daylight top 1 or 2 floors.• Tube runs of up to 40’ possible, 6-10’ typical.• Used for 9’+ ceilings.• Design & installation similar to standard

2x2 lensed fluorescent troffer.– Spacing should not exceed 1.5 x MH

(1.0 to 1.3 x MH preferred).• Spaces should be occupied during peak

daylight hours (~8:00AM to 4:00 PM).

Use caution for spaces with high computer use.

United States Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is a common measurement of how environmentally sustainable a building is.

Buildings are rated by four levels of achievement:– Certified (26-32 points)– Silver (33-38 points)– Gold (39-51 points)– Platinum (52-69 points)

City of San Diego has adopted the Silver level as the design standard for new municipal buildings and significant remodels larger than 5,000sf.

LEED Standards

There are currently four types of LEED Standards available:

1) LEED-NC (New Construction and Major Renovation)2) LEED-EB (Existing Building Operations – pilot)3) LEED-CI (Commercial Interiors Projects– pilot)4) LEED-CS (Core and Shell Projects – pilot)

Solatube and LEED

Solatube has been used in many LEED projects, including the EPA Laboratory in Chelmsford, MA which achieved LEED Gold.

Solatube can earn or contribute to the following credits in LEED-NC (v.2.1):– Daylight & Views (1 point)– Optimize Energy Performance (1-10 points)– Recycled Content (1-2 points)– Local/Regional Materials (1 point)– Controllability of Systems (1-2 points)– Innovation in Design (1-4 points)
