May 2015 Editor: Jim Matchett Last year, a May ROAR was produced to let everyone know the results of all the curling activities that took place in April. These would normally not have been reported until the October ROAR. There would have been nobody around the club in May to read it. (Maybe that was a good thing?) But, times have changed. The vast majority of readers receive the ROAR via email. Why make them wait to see the results? And, as stated last year, “Let the winners brag about their accomplishments over the summer. Hopefully, all their bragging will be over when the rest of us are ready to tackle a new season with renewed but probably misplaced optimism.” So, here it is along with some of my terrible jokes.

This is the story of a young man flying in a two-seater airplane with the pilot. The pilot has a heart attack and dies. The young man frantically calls a May Day: “May Day! May Day! Help me! Help me! My pilot has had a heart attack and is dead and I don't know how to fly. “Help me! Please help me!" All of a sudden he hears a voice over the radio saying: “This is the tower. I have received your message and I will talk you through it. I've had a lot of experience with this kind of problem. Now, just relax. Everything will be fine! Now give me your height and position." He says, "”I’m 5'10” and I'm in the front seat." “O.K." says the voice from the tower. “Repeat after me: Our Father who art in Heaven......”

Kurling for Kids

Before getting to the curling results, here is a wrap-up report from Nacy Gallant on Kurling for Kids that so many of you supported this year. Another fantastic K4Kids day. The final numbers are really amazing! The total raised by the 11 participating clubs was $312,310 and by MWCC $55,057. MWCC IS STILL NUMBER ONE! I would like to thank the Board of MWCC again for giving the club facilities for our big day. Also thanks for allowing the K4Kids executive to use the hall for the many organizing meetings. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the event, bought and sold tickets, made donations or

whatever to help us surpass our objective again. Every year we raise the bar and each year with all your hard work and dedication we achieve and better our goal. This year we passed the $2,000,000 mark of monies raised for the hospitals and the Kids. I will not list all the people who contributed in so many ways to this year's event because there are just too many names and I would not wish to inadvertently miss some of you. But, I will send a general thank you to all of you. However, there are a few people that I must give special thanks to: • Greg Kehoe and his helpers for taking care of the ice • My wife Barbara and daughter Edwina for preparing and serving lunch • John Stone and Jamie Burnett for all their efforts in the planning and execution of the day's events. The K4Kids day at MWCC has grown so much over the years that there is no way I could run this event without them. This year we had two winners on the day of the draw for the big prizes. The Air France trip and the Via Rail trip were won by club members or one of their family. One of the curlers who curled won the Grand Prix F1 tickets. Next year the big day is APRIL 2nd. Mark it on your calendar. Enter your team ASAP as so many teams have already reserved their spot for next year. The bar will be raised again but so what! We will meet the challenge. One more time----a huge THANK YOU from all the kids.

When I told my doctor I broke my leg in two places, he told me to stop going to those places Oh yes! The April curling results..... Ladder Here is a report from Kerry Laughlin:

Instructional Here's a report from Jim Doyle: The Green Singles was won by Don McKenzie who defeated Nathalie Trudel in a close game. Congratulations to all of the contestants. We need to place all of the graduates on teams in the fall, so if there are any vacancies on teams please contact Jim Doyle so that we can have all of these new members on teams.

If you want to hear about all the problems in the church ask someone who hasn’t been to church in many months.

Juniors Here is a report from Trish Dempsey: Wow, it’s hard to believe the season has already come to an end! It seems as though the month of April passed by especially quick. We made up for not curling in March, by having a very lively last few weeks of the season! We hosted a friendly game against a team from Hudson Legion on Easter weekend, which was then followed by an in-house doubles tournament. The following week was devoted to a pizza party to wrap up the season, and then league finals. From this, the Little Rock curlers walked away with certificates of participation, and Big Rock curlers took home their very own unique photos of themselves in action on the ice! The Junior season concluded on April 25th, with our annual Family Fun Day – where friends and family members are invited to hit the ice and learn to play. Many of the Big Rock curlers also thought it would be fun to set up and attempt the infamous McEwen raise!

The Myke Wilder Junior In-House League came to an exciting end on April 18th. Two sheets were fully occupied for the finals and, after accumulating points throughout the season, we ended with five top players. With a first-ever draw to the button to determine the fourth name on the trophy, these four players earned the title of the first place team for the 2014-15 Junior season: Danny Bell, Simon Marcotte, Luca Zarow and Britney Hécube. Special mention goes out to Patrick Jean, who missed the draw to the button by a few inches! Of the eighteen players that participated in the six league games this season, only Courtney & Britney Hécube, Simon Marcotte and Alec Zarow played all of them - and Britney even won all six! Congratulations, and thanks for your participation this season! The Junior curling season would not be possible without the handful of club members and parent volunteers who contribute to its success. Among these thoughtful volunteers, that donated their time to help with the weekly practices, are: Rob Philion, Shirley Elliott, Martin Phillips, Marianne Lynch, Adam Freilich and Stewart Yaxley. And some more very appreciated parents, who helped prepare the weekly snacks and coordinate kitchen duties for bonspiels that we hosted: Gail Spence, Bruce Bell, Linda LeMoyne and Normand Marcotte. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to the members of the Junior Committee, who worked hard to plan and implement all aspects of the Junior season – including registration, coaching, weekly practices and snack, special events, fundraisers and more – Michel Jean, Janet Walpole, Mark Watson, Jim Cochrane and Trish Dempsey! On behalf of the Junior Committee, we would like to wish you a fantastic summer. See you in the fall!

The young couple invited their elderly pastor for Sunday dinner.

While they were in the kitchen preparing the meal, the minister asked their son what they were having.

“Goat,” the little boy replied. “Goat?" replied the startled man of the cloth, “Are you sure about that?"

“Yep," said the youngster. “I heard Dad say to Mom, “Today is just as good time as any to have the old

goat for dinner.’”

Whaaaaaat? Ice Spiders appear at the end of the curling season…

The judge says to a double-homicide defendant, “You are charged with beating your wife to death with a hammer.” “You bastard.” came a voice from the back of the courtroom. The judge says, “You are also charged with beating your mother-in-law to death with a hammer.” “You dirty bastard.” came the same voice at the back of the courtroom. The judge stops and says to the man in the back of the courtroom. “Sir, I can understand your anger at these crimes but I must insist on your silence in my courtroom.” The man in the back stands up and says, “My apologies your honour. But, for 15 years I have lived next door to that lying bastard and every time I asked to borrow a hammer, he said he didn't have one.”

The MWCC Communications Project

LAST BLAST from the PAST! The season is over and our thoughts turn away from ice and towards grass covered surfaces. The MWCC began its mandate as a Curling and Lawn Bowling Club. Here we see an early shot of our club during the summer with bowling in full gear. Once again the hats are prominent on both the participants and fan section. I hope you have enjoyed these glimpses into the past. Have a great summer … Mark

Don't forget the 2015 Annual General Meeting to be held at the club on June 9th starting at 7:30 sharp.
