ENERGY

Energy causes the changes we see aroundus.

Our society uses more energy all thetime.

There are many types of energy, such asmechanical, chemical, heat andelectrical.

Energy can be transformed.

SOURCE OF ENERGY

Renewable sources of energy do not run out.Examples are firewood, sunlight and the wind.

Non-renewable sources of energy run out asthey are used up. Examples are coal, naturalgas or petroleum. Coal, natural gas andpetroleum are called fossil fuels.

There are two typesof energy sources:

SOURCES OF ENERGY: FOSSIL FUELS

Traditionally, most of our energy comes fromcombustible fossil fuels, such as natural gas oroil/petroleum.

Two main types of energy are used in everydaylife: electrical energy and combustibleenergy or fuel energy such as petrol, dieselfuel and natural gas.

The power plants that produce most of ourelectrical energy are thermal power plants. These burn coal, natural gas or petroleumproducts.

SOURCES OF ENERGY: FOSSIL FUELS

The fossil fuels are coal, oil/petroleumand natural gas.

They are fuels because they release heatenergy when they are burned.

They are fossil fuels because theywere formed from the remains ofliving organisms millions of years ago.

SOURCES OF ENERGY: FOSSIL FUELS

Fossil fuels such as coal and petroleumare a non-renewable source of energy.

Therefore if we use them, they willeventually run out. Future generationswill not be able to use these sources ofenergy.

Spain, like other countries, uses moreenergy from combustible fuels thanany other type of energy.

SOURCES OF ENERGY: COAL & PETROLEUM Advantages:

Easy to use. Fossil fuels are very easy to find.

Efficient. A major advantage of fossil fuels is their capacity to generatehuge amounts of electricity in just a single location. Power plants thatutilize gas are very efficient.

When coal is used in power plants, they are very cost effective. Coal isalso in abundant supply.

Transporting oil and gas to the power stations can be made throughthe use of pipes making it an easy task.

Power stations that make use of fossil fuel can be constructed inalmost any location. This is possible as long as large quantities of fuelcan be easily brought to the power plants.

The technology we use to harness the energy in fossil fuels is welldeveloped. The main reason for this is that fossil fuels have been usedto power our world for many decades.

Page 15: Sources of Energy: Fossil fuels

SOURCES OF ENERGY: COAL & PETROLEUM Disadvantages:

Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy resources.

Unsustainable. Their supply is limited and they will eventuallyrun out. Fossil fuels do not renew themselves, while fuels such as woodcan be renewed endlessly.

Emits air pollution. Fossil fuels release carbon dioxide when theyburn, which adds to the greenhouse effect and increases globalwarming. Of the three fossil fuels, for a given amount of energy released, coal produces the most carbon dioxide and natural gas produces theleast.

Coal and oil release sulfur dioxide gas when they burn, which causesbreathing problems for living creatures and contributes to acid rain.

Accidents happen. They are not nearly as serious as accidents relatedto nuclear power, but on the other hand, fossil fuels will never have thesafety of solar and wind.
