About the PERG

The Professional Education & Resource Guide is an easy reference for continuing education opportunities for massage therapists and bodyworkers.

The PERG offers a variety of ways to select courses that meet your continuing education needs. • Browse the pages of advertisements to discover opportunities to enhance your skills and explore new and exciting theories and approaches. • Find courses in a location near you offered as part of a continuing education program designed to meet the needs of the professional community. • Look up the dates you are available to take classes in the index at the back of the guide and choose from among those listings.

The PERG is published twice per year; look for the Spring issue in January and the Fall Update in July.

The PERG is mailed free of charge to licensed massage therapists and bodyworkers, so keep your address up to date with your state massage board to ensure you receive each and every copy. There are four editions of the PERG:

North Carolina South Carolina Chesapeake (MD, DC, and areas of VA surrounding Washington DC) The Virginias (VA, except the Washington DC area, and WV).

For your convenience, you can download all the current editions of the Professional Education & Resource Guide in PDF format at www.ProEdResourceGuide.com (high-speed access needed).

Dear Colleagues,

As ongoing participants in continuing education classes for massage therapists and bodyworkers you have without a doubt heard and seen the phrase “Approved Provider” associated with instructors and organizations. This status is conferred by the National Certifi cation Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, known by the acronym, NCBTMB.

The NCBTMB sets standards for providers of continuing education for our profession. Schools, private instructors, and businesses that specialize in providing continuing education go through an application process to acknowledge that they are providing, and will continue to provide, education that meets those standards. There are standards that address many aspects of course development and delivery, as well as the administrative functions associated with offering continuing education programs.

Here are a few examples of standards for continuing education that providers agree to:

• The level of the material taught must be beyond the level of education received in massage school. • The subject matter and skills taught must be within our scope of practice. • Instructors must be qualifi ed to teach the course.

• Certifi cates of completion can only be awarded to students who complete the course in its entirety. • Feedback from students must be obtained and used to improve future course offerings. Most state licensing boards accept continuing education hours earned from NCBTMB Approved Providers when massage therapists and bodyworkers renew their license. However, even though a course is offered by an approved provider, be aware that there may be restrictions on what kinds of courses are acceptable for license renewal. Your state may limit the CE hours they will accept in a certain subject, such as marketing. Or they may require specifi c classes in a topic, such as HIV/Aids training. Some subjects, for example, animal massage, may not be accepted at all by your state licensing board. It is your responsibility to know what your state board requires for license renewal.

Sincerely yours,

Nancy Toner Weinberger, Publisher

There is one place, and one place only, that we experience our physical existence: our body. Every experience we have is filtered through our senses which dance upon the landscape of our body. Every thought, every belief, is based upon what we have experienced in that sacred space. As bodyworkers, touch and movement are the two tools we have to reach the body, and deeper, the mind, where we can help to create a milieu for healing to occur.

(Level 1A) Principles & Technique Topics covered: Gravity & Momentum; Concepts of forces of gravity and physics, and how they have shaped biology. Reaching the unconscious mind through harnessing the powers of proprioception. Weighing, feeling the weight, compression, tossing, feeling light, feeling heavy, fluid weights (shimmers), rocking. Full basic protocol to address front of the body with movements based on the principles covered.

the ORIGINAL Indian Head Massaget r a i n i n g c o u r s e

Indian Champissage™ has been popular in India for over a thousand years. The head, neck, shoulders and upper back—areas where tension is more likely to accumulate—are gently, firmly and rhythmically massaged until the pressure simply melts away. This unique therapy combines physical and subtle massage with energy balancing to produce feelings of perfect peace and tranquility. It is a wonderful alternative to seated chair massage.
