NAIDOC

Planning is underway for NAIDOC week which is on the last week of term. There

will be a public speaking competition at Westlawn Primary School on Tuesday 24

June 2014. Indigenous games will be held at Alumy Creek on Wednesday 25 June with all public schools in Grafton and

Thursday 26 June, South Grafton High School will conduct an Indigenous games

celebration at McKittrick Park. More information will follow.

Indonesian Dance Workshop During the

past two weeks Indonesian language

classes at South Grafton

High School have had some wonderful

opportunities to participate in Indonesian cultural workshops. Last week Made

Denis, the Artist in residence for the Australia Indonesian Arts Alliance, introduced the students to the Balinese

traditional gamelan orchestra as well as the Balinese Kecak dance.

This week we were very fortunate to have Alfira and Murtala from Suara Indonesia

present some exciting Indonesian dance workshops. This is the fifth time that the

group has performed the workshops at South Grafton High and the students always look forward to their return. Alfira

and Murtala focus on dances from Sumatra including Ratoh Duek and Tari

Randai. Ratoh Duek is a body percussion dance in which the dancers perform a

series of movements in unison. The Tari Randai, which is always a favourite for the students, is a form of traditional theatre

from West Sumatra using Galembong pants where a fusion of rhythm and sound

is created by hitting the big pants. Indonesian dance is offered as an extra-curricular activity at lunch time in B5 for

anyone who would like to join us.
