Welcome to the 2012 Full-time Course Guide!
This Guide is a great place to find out about the courses on offer at
South Worcestershire College.
You will also find out about events happening throughout the coming year which are
designed to help you choose the right course.
Once you have had a look through this Guide, coming to an Open Evening is a great next
step. You and your family can come and have a look around at the excellent facililties on
offer and have an informal chat with the tutors about any of the courses that you may be
interested in.
Following your visit to an Open Evening you will hopefully have an idea of which subject you
would like to study. The best way to be really sure of the course that you want to join is to
come along to a Taster Session and try a course out (see page 6 for details).
Joining college is an exciting time. You will immediately notice that college has a very
different atmosphere from school; calling tutors by their first names, not wearing school
uniform and coming into college for just three days a week are some of the many things that
make our students feel like they are studying in a more adult environment.
During your time at college you will have plenty of opportunities to join in activities, take part
in social events and raise lots of money at charity events.
Your time at college isn’t just about learning, it’s about starting a new phase in your life.
Your future starts here...

South Worcestershire College is a great place to study.
Year after year we enrol more and more students and most
importantly the success rates of our students get higher and higher.
We are committed to ensuring our students accomplish the highest
possible achievements and standards. Our Level 3 courses are
equivalent to ‘A’ Levels and are highly valued as entrance
qualifications to Universities.
Another reason for our success is we work hard so our students enjoy
their time at College. Students are our customers so we ask them
what they want and what they think of our facilities and their
courses. We act upon their feedback to improve the learning
experience at South Worcestershire College. I am very proud that a
high percentage of our students said they would recommend us to a
friend.
We have strong partnerships with our local schools. Together we
provide a comprehensive range of learning opportunities. The
College’s strength is providing vocational courses and all our staff
have extensive business experience in their areas and are
professionally qualified. Students spend most of their College time in
workshops, salons, studios, work placements and practical settings
developing the skills they will need in their chosen careers. All our
full-time courses lead to nationally accredited qualifications, which
help students gain employment and build a successful future career.
We look forward to welcoming you to the College and helping you
to take your first step towards a successful career.

Choosing the right course is a big decision and there are
College events organised throughout the year to help you
get it right.
If you are undecided about which subject to study, think about which
subjects you enjoy at school, or about the hobbies that you enjoy. Do
you enjoy practical activities or do you prefer to study in a classroom
setting? Are you creative? Do you like to mix with new people on a
daily basis? Answers to these types of questions can help you with your
decision to choose a course.
Once you have decided on a subject, the best way to make a
decision about the right course for you is to come on one of our free
Taster Sessions (see dates on the opposite page) to try a course out for
a few hours. These sessions are designed to be fun and informative and
are a great way to experience a College course and College life
before you apply to join a course. To book your place all you need to
do is complete the booking form on page 65 of this Course Guide and
post it in to us.
Why not also come to an Open Evening? It’s a great opportunity to
have a look around the College and have an informal chat with the
tutors about any of the courses that you are interested in. Also your
parents may like to come along to the College to have a look around
and meet some of the tutors.
We look forward to seeing you here very soon!

F inancial InformationThe Government, through the Young People’s Learning Agency and the Skills Funding
Agency, makes funding available for some learners to cover the tuition costs of their
programme. The Secretary of State does not expect tuition fees to be charged to full-
time 16-18 year old students, however they will be expected to pay any materials fees.
Full-time students aged 19 years and over will be charged tuition fees and will be
required to pay examination and certification fees on enrolment (these costs will be
confirmed with you at interview). (Adult students 19 years and over may be eligible for
tuition fee remission on funded courses if they fall within a specified category eg those in
receipt of Job Seekers Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance (WRAG), or
those studying for their first Level 2 or Level 3 qualification.)
F inancial AssistanceYou don’t have to let a lack of money stop you from coming to
College. If you are on benefits or have a low income and are on one
of our courses then there are various funds available.
If you are worried that you might struggle financially whilst you are on your course
contact the Learner Services Finance Officer on (01386) 712624 or email
[email protected] for a copy of the Financial Assistance Guidelines which
provides details about Learner Support Funds and other sources of funding that may

with material and exam fees, travel, childcare, books and equipment.
You can get application forms and full details about all of the funds from the Learner
Services Team, which is adjacent to main reception at the Evesham Campus and

At South Worcestershire College Functional Skills are an essentia l part of your course.
Functional Skills involve using your English and Maths ability to solve problems. They are “employability” skills, which employers
want their staff to have as well as GCSE passes. You may have already studied Maths and English at school, but when you work
on these subjects at College you will be able to learn ways of applying your GCSE learning to practical, everyday situations.
It is vital that you can use English and Maths at College, work, and for everyday life. As part of your course you will study one or
more of the Functional Skills, in separate weekly sessions, so that you build the skills you need to succeed. If you are on a Level 1
course, you will study Maths, English and ICT in your skills sessions. You will do an initial assessment that will identify the level that is
best for you to start your study of Maths and English.
Your Functional Skills tutor will also work with you towards a qualification. This will involve taking an externally marked test, and if
you are doing English your tutor will assess your speaking, listening and communication skills as well. Your tutor will want to make
sure that you are ready before entering you for the exam, and you will have the chance to take practice papers before sitting
the actual test.
This is a great opportunity for you to brush up on your skills and gain the latest qualifications, so you can prove to employers that
you can apply your knowledge to your working life.

Meet the 2011 Students of the Y earEach year the College celebrates student progress, effort and achievement at the Student Awards Ceremony. Winners from each Academy are
nominated to win one of the sought after Student of the Year Awards.
Here are the 2011 Students of the Year and their citations, which have been written by their Course Managers:
JosephUnderhill

PrincipalMichaelO’Brien
ClaireMurphy
KatieBooth
CouncillorLiz Eyre
Samuel Buettner - Apprentice of the Year
Samuel has, throughout his Level 3 Apprenticeship,
continuously achieved Distinctions in all of his online
assessments, and has shown great commitment to
completing his Level 3 portfolio.
Samuel has developed into an outstanding young
technician working for a locally run family dealership.
I am confident that Samuel will go on to become a Ford
Master technician in later years.
Katie Booth - Student of the Year (14 - 16)
Over the last two years Katie has given every aspect of
her study 100% of her attention and puts her heart and
her soul into each task she undertakes. The work that
Katie produces is of a very high standard and
demonstrates a real creative flair that will be put to good
use as she progresses on to the Level 2 Beauty Therapy
course with us next year.
Katie is an absolute pleasure to teach, we have
watched her blossom from a shy young girl to a mature
young lady and feel very proud of her achievement.
Katie always has a smile on her face and approaches
each new subject with real enthusiasm and
determination. She has achieved several Grade As for
her internal assessments, which is no easy feat.
Katie has an excellent attendance record and is always
one of the first to arrive in the mornings and is always
ready to start the lesson and eager to learn.
Claire Murphy - Student of the Year (Return to Learn)
Claire completed her Level 2 NVQ in Childcare in 2008
after withdrawing from Level 3 in 2006 due to personal
reasons and her disbelief in her own academic abilities.
She rejoined the Level 3 DCE course in September 2009
with a determination to achieve and she has
consistently shown a positive attitude to her studies,
meeting challenging self set targets and demonstrating
excellent skills in her practical work with children.
Claire also devoted her time to supporting some of her
fellow classmates with their studies, encouraging them
to succeed and stay on track.
Claire gave birth to a baby boy in November 2010 but
she was able to plan her studies around this event,
organising her time and energies to enable success.
She has shown an ability to persevere, a resilience to
life’s unexpected surprises, has grown in confidence and
she deserves recognition for these achievements.
Joseph Underhill - Student of the Year (16 - 18)
Joe is a remarkable young man. The only male student
in the group, he started the year lacking confidence
and was very quiet.
Joe has hydrocephalus resulting in short term memory
loss and is colour blind. However, he has developed
strategies to be able to achieve merit level. He has
given his peers a fascinating insight into how he
manages to cope on a daily basis.
He has been quietly determined and worked very hard
to achieve to his best ability, using ALT support and by
being very open and honest about his difficulties. He
clearly understands his limitations, but has shown
enthusiasm especially in fund-raising activities and has
brought an interesting perspective on individual needs
that as a group we have all benefited from.15

Steph left school to join a local college where
she studied a Make Up Art course, from there
she moved on to a Travel and Tourism course at
the same college.
At the end of her course Steph was still
undecided as to which way she wanted her
career to go, and so took a year out of
education to give herself time to consider her
options.
During her year off Steph made the decision that
she would train as a primary school teacher.
“Because I don’t have any A Levels, the Access course was an alternative, fast track way
for me to get to university.
In hindsight if I had studied A Levels at school and then progressed to university I don’t think
I would have had the skills to succeed. Thanks to the Access course I now feel prepared to
start a university course and have the determination to do well.
We come into college for three days a week to study on the course. There is a lot of
assignment work so you do have to be completely committed to the course and
determined to succeed.
Assignment work can be done in the Learning Resource Centre, which is a facility open to
all students and offers computer facilities and also a library service. This Centre provides a
peaceful place to work outside of lessons.
There is no end-of-course exam on the Access course. Instead a credit system is used for
each assignment that you submit and these credits go towards your final grade. It is hard
work because basically you are squeezing the equivalent of three A Levels into one year,
but if you are determined to reach your ultimate goal of your dream job then you will
succeed.”
“We’ve been told
that universities like to
take on Access students
because they have made
the decision to return to study
and are more determined to reach
their goal of a chosen career.”

Level 3 Evesham Campus P Malvern Campus P
Access to Higher Education Diploma (Combined Studies)
One year course
What qualifications do I need?
• Applicants will need to have Literacy at Level 2
• Numeracy at Level 2 is desirable though not a
requirement for the Access Diploma although it may be a
requirement for some Higher Education courses
What’s involved?
• Core Skills to prepare for study at Higher Education: study
skills, Information Technology and numeracy
• GCSE equivalent Maths and English is available for those
who may need them
• Students will study three main option modules from the

Health Studies
How will I be studying?
The course will introduce learners to the types of assessment
formats that would be met at University: academic essay,
seminar, presentations, laboratory work, scientific reports,
research and exams.
Learners will complete an assessment for each unit studied
through individual study/group work. These will be graded
and full feedback given with each marked assignment.
Where can I move on to after this course?
Students can progress to Level 4 study typically at University/
Open University or HE courses at Colleges.
Where students have chosen to delay or not to take up
university places they have typically improved their

study a subject of their choice.
Access to Higher Education

who wish to progress onto a
degree course in a variety of
disciplines including humanities,
social sciences, physiotherapy,
nursing and teaching.

Emma O’Shaughnessy worked for many years in
an administration role before being made
redundant. The administration role required
Emma to have some bookkeeping skills so she
joined a part-time course with us (she had
studied for the HND in Business and Finance with
us in 1994). When Emma was made redundant
from her administration role she had to make
some decisions about her future.
Because Emma had enjoyed the bookkeeping
course she spoke to her tutor to find out more
about the AAT course.
Emma felt that gaining a professional
qualification would improve her employment
prospects and would give her the opportunity to
go freelance in the future so she made the
decision to join the course.
“When I was at school I would have thought that Accountancy would be the last career
path that I would have taken, but in my administration role I was required to do some work
with budgets, which lead to me joining the Bookkeeping course at the College. I enjoyed
doing this and so when I was made redundant I decided to train further in bookkeeping.
I have really enjoyed my time on the AAT course. Our group consisted mostly of mature
students, some of whom were there to gain a qualification which would improve their job
prospects and some were there so that they could become self-employed.
The tutors on the course have been fantastic – many students on the course had family or work
commitments and the tutors have been very accommodating with students’ different needs.
On the AAT courses students are assessed through a series of exams throughout the course.

Becky spent two years with us studying NVQ
Level 2 and Level 3 in Business Administration.
During this time Becky went on three work
placements; two at Evesham Community
Hospital and one on Reception at the College’s
Malvern Campus.
“I would definitely recommend going to college to any school leaver before they start
looking for a job.
For me personally I Iearnt many new skills during my time on the Business Administration course
that I use on a daily basis in my current job. Skills such as how to correctly lay out a letter,
prioritising my workload, as well as how to use software packages such as Microsoft Excel.
My role at Evesham Hospital as a Medical Secretary involves working for eight consultants;
this includes typing up their dictated letters, sorting out patients’ results and scheduling
operations.
I had to develop a lot of skills for this job so I am pleased I had the business administration
training to help me get started.
The Course Manager, Claire Beaman, was very helpful and supportive and also gave me
an excellent opportunity to gain extra skills such as Text and Word Processing.
The Business Administration course provides you with a variety of skills and opens up many
different career paths.”

Joe Smith hadn’t enjoyed school and felt that he
didn’t really fit in very well with his fellow school
pupils and because of personal circumstances
he also missed much of his final year at school.
Joe saw joining a course with us as a completely
new start for him.
Joe started on the Level 1 Land Based Studies
course to ensure that his transition from school to
college would be successful for him.
“Because of the friendly environment that the Animal Care tutors create I felt like I really
fitted into the group from the beginning; this was a new experience for me. The staff
understood that I had personal issues to deal with and so have been very supportive to
make sure that I was successful on my course.
I have also had the support of my Progression Tutor Becky. Each full-time student at the
College has a Progression Tutor and it really helps to have someone to talk to about any
issues that are worrying you about your college or personal life.
I have really enjoyed this Animal Care course. Most of our time involved practical work like
daily care of the college animals. We also went on lots of trips such as to local farms and
stables and Crufts. We have had to do some written work which involves doing research in
the College’s Learning Resource Centre; our last project involved finding out how to care
for a sick horse. We also did work experience as part of the course and I did mine at the Ark
Animal Sanctuary and the Domestic Wildfowl Trust.
Joe plans to study for his Animal Care Level 2 and 3 qualifications before moving on to
University to study Herpetology (the study of amphibians). Joe’s dream is to work abroad as
a specialist researcher of reptiles.”

Chris Hodgkiss originally left school to join a
Public Services course at another college, but
after a year decided it wasn’t for him and
decided to reconsider his future.
Drawing and photography had always been
hobbies of Chris’s and so he decided to
investigate our Art and Design courses.
“Friends of mine had told me about the Art courses at the College, and so I visited theCollege’s website and liked the look of the Art courses and decided to apply. I also wentalong to the End of Year Student Exhibition. I was impressed with the work on display andknew that I had made the right decision to join the course.
The course appealed to me because it is a hands-on course and you get to try out differentareas of Art and Design, such as 3D or graphics, both of which I have really enjoyed.Everybody has the same brief for each task but we each come up with very differentpieces of work. This makes the class a good environment to be creative in.
The Learning Resource Centre at the College has been useful because I have been able todo research and art studies there and also finish off projects there if I have run out of time inclass.
I know that lots of the Art and Design students from the College move on to study at University. To help students fit in to University life easily the Art and Design course is run like a Universitycourse and you are taught to think and put work together as a university student would.
I am keeping my options open at the moment and so will investigate University and thepossibility of moving into employment once I have finished the course.”
“Eventually I would like to move
into a more formal area of
design work, such as
architectural design.”

When he first left school, Scott Price studied
Networking and Computing at another local
college. He found that he got bored working
with computers and wanted to change direction
with his career.
Art had always been a hobby of Scott’s and his
girlfriend and his mum both encouraged him to
return to college to study Art; something they
both knew he would enjoy.
Scott came along to one of our Taster Sessions
and from there decided to apply for the Access
to Art course.
“The course is designed as a part of a route to University so for me it ticked a lot of boxes.
Also because the course was a year long it meant that I could start at University in a years
time.
The course offers a wide range of subjects including Digital Imaging, Life Drawing, Textiles,
Painting and Sculpture and as such, attracts students with varied interests and abilities.
Throughout the course we are given design briefs, such as design a business card and
poster – this includes researching project designs, having peer reviews part way through the
project to get feedback from the other students, as well as doing the art and design work.
There are no end of year exams.
You have to be disciplined to succeed on the course; it involves coming into college for two
days a week, and also working from home for approximately another two days a week. (There
are computer facilities, which are available for all students to use for coursework in the
Learning Resource Centre and studio spaces for practical work.)
I am now looking forward to starting at De Montfort University in Leicester in September and
will be studying Graphic Design and Illustration.
My plan for the future is to move into illustration, such as story boarding for films or games.”
“The tutors’ advice about university
applications is invaluable.”

“When I left school I knew that I wanted a career helping people. I considered training incounselling or healthcare but was not really motivated by this idea. I decided that Beauty wasdefinitely the way to go because I would be helping people feel better about themselves.
I joined the Beauty Therapy course in 2009 and looking back I cannot believe the variety ofskills that I have learnt on the course. Also how confident I have become when treatingclients. The main focus of the course is to get hands-on experience and this method oflearning has worked very well for me.
The relationship that our class has with our tutor, Sam, is brilliant - ultimately she is our tutor, but we have more of a friendship relationship with her and because of this she is veryapproachable if we need to talk to her about any issues that we might have.
I knew when I started the course that I wanted to one day have my own salon and that Iwould need to study at university to ensure that I achieved my goal. I applied to threeuniversities, two of these universities were in Derby and London, both of which have anexcellent reputation for their Beauty Therapy courses. I was offered a place at Derbystraight away, and then some time later, following an interview at London College ofFashion, I was offered a place there too, which I accepted. I will be studying theFoundation Degree in Beauty Therapy and Spa Management and then hope to top this upby studying for a third year for a full Degree.”
In September Rebecca will be
joining the London School of
Fashion.
“My goal from day one of my
College course has been to
own my own salon – I am
determined that it is going to
happen!”Rebecca Jorden stayed on for a year at school,
to do her AS Levels, because she was unsure
what she wanted to do. During that year she
made the decision to study Beauty Therapy and
right from the start had a long term goal of one
day owning her own salon.
Rebecca has thoroughly enjoyed her time on the
course, the highlight being when she competed in
the UK Skills competition – a competition in which
the College has been very successful over the
past couple of years. The judges were very
impressed by Rebecca’s talent and so selected
her to be a member of the World Skills UK squad

Stephanie Thompson gained her Level 3
National Diploma in Childcare and Education in
2009.
During this time she did a work placement at
Stepping Stones Nursery in Pershore, where she
was subsequently offered a job.
“When I was in Sixth Form I thought about what I wanted to do and a course in childcarereally appealed to me.
I looked at both South Worcestershire College and another local college, and opted forSouth Worcestershire College because I preferred the way that the work placement weeksand weeks spent in college were timetabled alternately.
During my two years at the College I took part in work placements at two great settings;Cherry Orchard First School and Stepping Stones. I was delighted to be offered a job atStepping Stones once my work placement with them had finished.
On the course we studied areas that are now invaluable to me such as paediatric first aidand signs and symptoms to look out for with a poorly child.
I have also brought lots of knowledge and ideas from my College course which have reallyhelped me to get started in my new job at Stepping Stones and definitely helped to buildmy confidence when working with the children.
Looking for a job in a nursery would be more difficult without a Level 3 qualification. I wouldencourage anyone who wants a career in childcare to gain their Level 3 qualification.”

Graham Begley left school and did a variety of
jobs including working in retail and teaching
swimming at Evesham Leisure Centre. He then
moved on to work at Long Lartin prison, where
he worked his way up to becoming a Prison
Officer.
Graham then left the Prison to look after his two
children so that his wife was able to continue
working.
Graham has always wanted to teach, but the
opportunity had never been open to him until
this point.
He started doing voluntary work at a local first
school and at the same time visited one of our
Open Evenings to find out the best route for him
into teaching.
“I started my training on the NVQ Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
course at the College. I had A Levels so could have joined the Foundation Degree course
straight away but because I had been out of education for a number of years the Course
Manager Sharon recommended that I join the Level 3 course first. On completion of the
NVQ I progressed on to the Foundation Degree in Learning Support.
The Foundation Degree is made up of modules such as Challenging Behaviour, Speaking
and Listening with the final project being a research project for a dissertation type
assignment. In our second year of the Foundation Degree course we studied one of the
modules at the University of Worcester in preparation for us joining university to study the
one year top up course to gain the Full Honours in Education Studies.
To study for the NVQ and the Foundation Degree you need to be in a suitable work
placement. I fulfilled this requirement early on when I was offered a job at Bredon Hill
Middle School.
The Foundation Degree does involve home based studies and so personal time management
skills are invaluable. The course is completely assignment based and there are no end of year
exams. Following the one year at University I plan to join either a Graduate Teaching
Programme or to work towards the PGCE qualification which will give me teacher status.”
“The Foundation Degree is run
one evening each week
which has meant that I have
been able to work full-time
alongside the course.
My personal goal is to be
teaching my own Primary
School class of Year 4 or 5
children.”

Luke Barrett has lived abroad for most of his life
and when he was 21 he and his mother moved
back to the UK. At this time Luke had gained A
Level equivalent qualifications, and decided
that he wanted to study Game Design and
Interactive Media.
Luke was too late to apply for our course on his
return to the UK, so for a few months
he worked for a local games retailer.
During this time he had his interview
at the College and was accepted
onto the course.
“I have always loved digital graphics and taught myself Adobe Photoshop. I wanted to
improve my skills further and to also learn new software packages such as Flash and
Dreamweaver, both of which were covered on my course.
I have really enjoyed the practical aspect of the course, for example we have been given
a task of coming up with an idea for a game, create an interface of what the menu will
look like, create a story board along with the characters and the maps and implement the
sounds and music. We have done the theory for the project this year and next year will put
the game together.
We have also been on some trips during the course, such as to Alton Towers for which we
had to create a sign, a poster and t-shirt design and to Disneyland, Paris to create a
promotional video.
There is no exam at the end of the course, however you do have to pass all of your
assignments in the first year to go on to the second.
I have really enjoyed this year because I have learnt new skills and new software
programmes that I know will be essential when I am in employment. There is a possibility of
a job opportunity in Hong Kong once I have finished my course and so this is motivating me
to do as well as I can during my time at College.”

join the Foundation Skills Programme because it
would give him the opportunity to take his Maths
and English GCSEs as well as gain new skills.
He has been on the Foundation Skills

construction.
Last year Dan achieved his City and Guilds Level

“My school suggested that I applied to join the Foundation Skills Programme, and I liked the
look of the course because you could try out different subject areas. I decided to try out
Construction and enjoyed it so decided to stay in that area.
During my three years at College I have made many things including a bird box, a clock
and a magazine rack. I have learnt new skills, such has using the hand router and the band
saw with each piece that I make.
We have covered many areas of construction on the course including plumbing, electrics,
painting, as well as health and safety in the workshop.
The tutors are very easy to get on with and during the course you get to know them really
well and so they are very approachable. Lesa, my Course Manager, has always been there
for me and I call her my ‘back up mum’.
When I leave College I would like to find a full-time job where I can use my woodwork skills.”

Anna Hicks left school at 16 and worked in a
variety of manual jobs until she was 21.
She had always wanted to improve her English,
Maths and IT qualifications so that she could start
training in either Health and Social Care or IT.
When her mum was looking for a course for
herself, she came across the Foundation Skills
Programme; Anna read about the course and
felt that it would be an ideal first step into
training at college for her future.
“I had an interview with the Course Manager, Lesa, and told her that I wanted to improve on
my English, Maths and IT and I also wanted to build my confidence up. She felt the
Foundation Skills Programme would be ideal for me.
When I first started on the Foundation Skills Programme I didn’t know how I would fit in
because the other students were all school leavers, but as it turned out, we all mix really
well.
As part of the course you get to try out different vocational areas that you are interested in.
I chose to try Health and Social Care, having been a member of St John’s Ambulance for
11 years. I also had the opportunity to try out IT and found it so interesting that I have
decided to apply to join the Computer Maintenance (CMAP) course in September.
During this past year I have worked with some friendly, helpful people. Our Course Manager
Lesa has been great. She is very laid back and you can talk to her in confidence about
anything. I am a different person to a year ago, thanks to the Foundation Skills Programme
and the staff. My confidence has really improved.”
Anna is now looking forward to studying the Level 2 and 3 IT courses at the College with a
view to working with computers in the future.
“ I would recommend the
Foundation Skills Programme to
anyone who needs help building
their confidence.”

When Melissa Hey started her course with us she
studied for her Beauty Therapy Level 2 and Level
3 qualifications. Once qualified she worked for a
few years in a beauty salon.
Mel had always wanted to become qualified in
both Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy and when
she had her baby, and her baby started going
to nursery, she felt the opportunity was available
for her to begin studying hairdressing.
“I’ve always been a ‘girlie girl’ and loved doing my friends’ hair and nails when I was at
school and from then I knew that I wanted to study hair and beauty.
My mum originally did the hairdressing course here at the College and recommended it to
me, so I came to the College on a Taster Day to find out more and decided to enrol.
I would say that 80% of the hairdressing course is practical; working in the College’s hair
salon. During the Level 2 course we have covered lots of aspects of hairdressing, such as
cutting, perming, setting and colouring. On the Level 3 course we will cover more technical
hairdressing skills such as colour correction and more technical hair cutting techniques.
We get lots of experience working in the College’s salon because it is just like working in a
High Street salon, with paying clients booking appointments and wanting a variety of
hairdressing services. But it is still good for us to work in a variety of salon environments so
that we can see how private salons are managed. So we do a weeks work experience
during each year of the hairdressing course.
Once I have completed the Level 2 course I will work towards the Level 3 qualification and
then train as an Assessor. Once I have achieved this my plan is to move on to teacher
training so that I can achieve my ultimate goal of teaching either hairdressing or beauty
therapy in a college setting.”

Kate Westmacott was a marketing manager in a
local hotel for many years and had her children
during this time.
Once her children had started at primary school
Kate felt it gave her the perfect opportunity to
think about which way she wanted her future
career to go and to start re-training.
She had enjoyed her job at the hotel but did not
feel that she was making a direct difference to
people’s lives and she wanted to move into a
career where she could do that.
“I originally chose to join the Level 3 Health and Social Care course because my aim, at
that time, was to become a social worker and the course provides a great stepping stone
on to that career path.
Our course ran over one evening and one day per week over the two years. There was a
lot of course work to complete but there were lots of opportunities to complete this during
our time at College.
During the course we have studied a wide range of topics including Working with
Vulnerable Adults, Anatomy & Physiology and Safeguarding Children. Also, as part of the
course we were all required to do 100 hours work experience, which is broken down into
three chunks. For one of my placements I went to work for Stonham Home Group; an
organisation who support vulnerable adults. I worked for them at a women’s refuge and
following my placement I applied for a position and was successful. I am now in training with
Stonham in preparation for working on a six month Perpetrators of Domestic Abuse project.
Originally my aim was to become a social worker, but I am enjoying building relationships
with vulnerable adults within my current role with Stonham. I would now like to carry on
working at Stonham to gain some real hands on experience and then I am considering
studying towards a degree in counselling.”

Carl Wicks has been coming to our College for
six years in total. For the first two years he came
to college for two days each week through a
school programme to study engineering.
When it was time for Carl to leave school he
made the decision to study Motor Vehicle
Engineering. He came to an Open Evening at
the College and then came along to a Motor
Vehicle Taster Session before applying to join a
Motor Vehicle course.
“I decided to go from Engineering into Motor Vehicle Engineering because I enjoyed
working with engines, rather than making them.
College is completely different to school – the tutors realise that everyone works at a
different pace and because of the practical nature of the course it is easier to ask
questions of the tutor and the students also work together and help each other.
I would say that the course is 70% practical work. We are assessed throughout the course,
either practically in the College’s workshops, through online multiple choice assessments or
through written assessments.
Because we are only in College for two and a half days a week, I have been able to get
part-time work in a local garage.
Doing part-time work at the same time as my College course has worked well. It means that
I can bring questions from my workplace to run past my Course Manager, Mark. Also what I
am learning at College has been vital to my job.
Mark is sound. We have all built up a great relationship with him and he has even said that
when we are working, that we can contact him at any time with work related questions.”
“Eventually I plan to be

Paul Foster, a former quarry worker, made the
decision to re-train and improve his
employment prospects when he took on
custody of his two young daughters.
Paul, aged 33, had held down a variety of jobs
in the past, but none of them had given Paul the
opportunity to gain qualifications to enable him
to progess in his career.
Paul applied to join the course, following a
conversation with his local Job Centre.
“The Job Centre knew my situation and recommended this course to me because I couldfit it in around the girls’ school hours and because it would give me qualifications thatwould make me more employable. Also, because my daughters are both under 7 years ofage, financial help was available to enable me to join the course.
I was nervous about first joining the course; I had only used warehouse computer systemsbefore and so really I was starting from scratch on this course. However, the atmosphere onthe course is great. Hilary, our tutor, is really like one of the group and is very approachableif you need extra help with anything. All of us in the group bounce off each other and arehappy to help each other out if we get stuck on a piece of work.
Another benefit of this course, for me, is that it has improved my social life. Because I ambringing up my daughters, my social life is fairly limited. This course has given me manyopportunities to not only learn, but to also make new friends.
This is the start of my new career. When I go for interviews in the future I want to prove toemployers that I am determined to keep bettering myself. For the benefit of the companyand myself. I think that joining a College course is a good way of demonstrating that this ishow I feel.”
On successful completion of the course Paul would like to join the AAT Accountancy course.

Jordan Westwood came straight to College from
a local school.
He knew that he wanted to join a Public Services
course. He looked at a few courses at other
colleges but preferred the sound of our course
because it was more practically based.
Jordan came along to our Open Evening to
investigate the course further and found out
about the adventure activities such as sailing
and mountaineering that formed part of the
course. He then made the decision to apply to
join.
“When my group joined the course we each had different ideas about which Services we
wanted to join. However the course has given us the opportunity to find out about all of the
Services by visiting places such as police stations and army bases. Originally I wanted to join
the police force, but from the knowledge I have gained on this course I have now made
the decision to join the army. Our Course Manager James was in the RAF, but he is great
about giving impartial advice about all of the Services that we could progress on to.
During the course we have taken part in team building activities and gone on practical
expeditions, which this year have included mountaineering in the Brecon Beacons, sailing
and taking part in a survival trip. We also take part in regular gym sessions to improve our
fitness levels.
The focus on the first year of the course has definitely been about team building and
confidence building. Throughout the year we have given presentations to the rest of our
group – at the beginning everyone was really nervous about doing this, but in this past year
we learnt to be more confident. Trips such as the one to the Brecon Beacons have also
given us a sense of personal achievement which again has improved our confidence.”
“ I have one more year to do at
College and I will then apply for
my basic training in the army. I
know that the team work skills and
the confidence that I now have
will be invaluable for my future in
the army.”

Jennifer Callow has lived abroad for most of her
life and when she returned to the UK in 2008 she
hadn’t had the opportunity to complete her A

interested in physical and practical activities,
she decided to come on a Taster Session for the

Jenny found out that if she was successful on the
course she would come away with not only the

qualifications, into practice.
During my course I also studied Leadership Skills which I was able to use when working with

One of our former Sports students visited the College this year to talk about her experiences of
competing in international athletics competitions.
Katrina Hart, who completed the National Diploma in Sport with us in 2008 is now studying Sport at the
University of Bath.
She was introduced to Paralympic sport aged 14, and won her first bronze in the 100m at the 2005
European Championships in Finland, where she was the youngest member of the GB team, aged only
15. Since then she has competed all over the world, including in the Netherlands and Beijing.
Her many outstanding achievements include winning England's first athletics Gold at the
Commonwealth Games in Delhi in a 100m event for elite disability athletes.
In January 2011 Katrina competed in the IPC (International Paralympic Commission) Athletics World
Championships in New Zealand and brought home the Gold for the 200m, and Bronze for both 100m

When Sarah Cope left school she worked for four
years at the family pub, circumstances then
changed and Sarah decided it was the right
time for her to start studying for qualifications in
the Travel and Tourism industry.
Sarah applied to join and started on the Travel
and Tourism course in September.
“The course originally appealed to me because of the areas covered on the course such
as Marketing, Event Management, Cabin Crew and Customer Service.
A big part of the course is to work on real life scenarios, such as when we had to plan and
book a trip to London for the first year Travel and Tourism students. We have also taken
bookings in the College’s Travel Shop and we do a lot of role plays, such as dealing with
customer complaints and taking telephone bookings.
During my time on the course the College discovered that I was dyslexic and gave me lots
of support so that I could re-take my English and Maths GCSEs, which was one of my goals
when I started at College.
All the tutors on the course have been great. If you work hard on the course our Course
Manager, Katrina, will go out of her way to help you and ensure that you keep up with your
course work. I have held down a full-time job since starting the Travel and Tourism course
and the support from all of the staff on the course has made a real difference to me.
My goal now is to get a job in event management, with a view in the future to working
abroad. My ultimate dream job would be to work as part of the Thomas Cook Wedding
Package team!”
“The course has really opened my
eyes to the job opportunities that
are available in Travel and Tourism.”
