Infiniti EMERG-E, the highly advanced mid-ship sports car that provides an excit-ing glimpse into Infiniti's future, is now even more exhilarating. Following the launch of the concept car at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed (June 28 - July 1) marked the global debut of the fully-functional version.

It's not often that a concept car gets transformed into a working demonstrator, but that's exactly what Infiniti has done in conjunction with the UK Government's Technology Strategy Board (TSB). Working closely with the TSB and partners Lotus Engineering, NTCE, CGI, EVO, Xtrac and a

it would look like as a running vehicle, and at the same time use this col-laboration of UK companies to dem-onstrate the UK's capability in this area."

T h e advanced technol-ogy showcased in Infiniti EMERG-E deliberately draws on the knowl-edge of suppliers beyond Infiniti's usual supplier base in the quest to uncover the most innovative hardware and technical know-how today. That quest has seen Infiniti become a part of the UK govern-ment's Technology Strategy Board initia-tive, whose aim is to speed the arrival of low carbon vehicles to our roads. The partial-funding from TSB has signifi-cantly widened the resource that Infiniti can draw upon in the development of EMERG-E and use technology relevant for the future of the automobile.

"This is a collaboration of UK companies in order to demonstrate low carbon vehicle potential," contin-ues Hardcastle. "We took a Lotus Evora platform and together with Lotus we replaced their standard powertrain with a new range-extender electric version, specially developed for EMERG-E. It's a stunning looking car and it just shows that an electric car doesn't have to be boring."

Boasting an array of exciting new technologies that the brand will adopt in its quest to build dramatic and sus-tainable high performance cars, Infiniti EMERG-E also provides a fresh expres-sion of Infiniti's design language applied to a high performance, mid-ship sports car for the first time.

"Infiniti has a good knowledge of hybrid technology as we are already providing this to the market right now," explains Francois Bancon, Division General Manager of Exploratory and Advanced Product. "But this is about

changing the rules of the game. This is a new way of thinking about the sports car of the future."

The demonstrator cars remain true to the spirit and inspiration of the original concept car; twin electric motors gener-ate 402bhp (300kW), making EMERG-E capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in just four seconds - and from zero to 130 mph in a single, seamless 30 second burst. Crucially, it also operates as zero emission urban transport over a 30-mile range and when the range-extender petrol engine functions in concert with its twin electric motors, it produces a CO2 output of only 55g/km (NEDC cycle) over a 300-mile range.

These advanced motors direct their power via a single speed (XTRAC) transmission to create what is effec-tively an open differential, this arrange-

ment significantly reduces driveline friction losses. A quartet of invert-ers controls the motors and their energy regenera-tion under brak-ing. The recov-ered power is directed to a lith-ium-ion battery mounted behind the seats. The battery can be recharged from a mains power supply (domestic and fast-charge) and stores suf-ficient energy to propel the

INFINITI EMERG-E for 30 urban miles, at which point the on-board petrol engine starts up to act as a generator. This light, ultra-compact, Lotus Engineered three-cylinder 1.2-liter 35kW engine has been purpose-designed for its range-extending role. It operates between crank speeds of 1500-4000rpm, produc-ing peak power at only 3500rpm.

The program remains a process of continual learning, and already there have been fundamental improvements crucial to the success of these running prototypes. "If you notice, the con-cept car doesn't have a spoiler," says Hardcastle. "We added the spoiler onto the cars because we needed to bal-ance the front and rear lift of the car. The spoiler was therefore specifically designed to be purely functional as

Southern Automotive JournalSeptember 20125Southern Automotive Journal September 20124 www.IneedOEMparts.com www.IneedOEMparts.com

opposed to being added just for design purposes."

It doesn't stop there, either. As an exploratory study into the future of vehicle technology, the benefits of which will change the approach to envi-ronmentally sustainable and respon-sible performance, the demonstrators are embarking upon a year-long testing schedule.

The performance of EMERG-E will be demonstrated in full at the Goodwood Festival of Speed as profes-sional Infiniti drivers tackle the famous hillclimb route on Friday and Saturday before Red Bull Racing Formula One driver Mark Webber gets behind the wheel on Sunday.

"Goodwood is a very public dem-onstration and we'll learn so much there. We're almost doing our development and tuning in full view of the public but this was part of the idea in using the funding from the TSB," says Hardcastle. "We want to promote not only what we're doing but also what the TSB and the Automotive Council is doing and show how Infiniti has embraced and supported the scheme. By its very nature it's very public but it's also very exciting. EMERG-E's first dynamic event will be at Goodwood before it goes off on a World tour. The spectators at Goodwood are going to see this car before a lot of the Nissan executives have seen it, that's how public it is."

Infiniti EMERG-E represents both a design and an engineering challenge for Infiniti and the involved TSB partners.

"In EMERG-E, we're trying to study and investigate and showcase two things: one is the potential of a mid-engine sportscar for the Infiniti range, and the second is of a new range-extended powertrain," continues Hardcastle. "On the one hand we had an opportunity to make a mid-engine Infiniti sportscar, which would differ-entiate it from anything in the Nissan range and anything else in the Infiniti range. The mid-engine concept could have any powertrain, so we made a bold decision. Nissan and Infiniti already have a lot of technology for normally aspi-rated engines, turbocharged engines, diesel engines, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles. We hadn't really studied in great depth the potential of a range-

extended electric vehicle though, and so that gave rise to the second opportunity to study a new powertrain as well. So in EMERG-E, we've brought the two things together."

Infiniti EMERG-E is blazing a trail along the Automotive Council Technology Group roadmap, which sets out objectives for environmental sustain-ability in automobiles. A mandate from the UK Government requires the devel-opment of innovative powertrains, such as the range-extender technology used in EMERG-E, to reduce CO2 emis-sions. Another key direction on the roadmap is vehicle weight.

"If you make a lightweight car, whatever powertrain you use, it will have lower CO2," says Hardcastle.

R e d u c i n g weight was one of the key con-siderations for EMERG-E, and with an aluminum chas-sis and carbon fiber body, which pro-vides a 20-percent strength-gain in

tandem with a 50-percent reduction in weight compared to the sheet molded composite often used in sports car con-struction, the car weighs in at the target 3523 pounds. Of course, lighter weight also significantly contributes to its over-all performance.

Pushing the boundaries of envi-ronmentally-sustainable powertrains, with innovative materials and technol-ogy, EMERG-E brings the future of the automobile to life.n

GreenTech Automotive (GTA), a U.S.-based manufacturer of environmen-tally friendly, energy-efficient vehicles, today unveiled its revolutionary MyCar, a two-seat all-electric vehicle that produc-es zero emissions and provides a range of up to 115 miles. Former President Bill Clinton and former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour attended the unveiling, which also celebrated GTA's relocation to the United States, where the company expects to create 426 new manufactur-ing jobs and support 7,400 more.

"Too many people have given up on American manufacturing, say-ing manufacturing jobs are not coming back. But GTA set out to prove them wrong," said Terry McAuliffe, chairman of GreenTech. "For too long, America has been inventing products here and sending the production jobs overseas. But we're part of a rebirth for American

As part of its mission to educate, inform and represent the collision repair professional, the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) places great emphasis on sup-porting the career and technical edu-cation schools and advisors who work to shape the minds and skills of students who will enter into our trade. As part of that emphasis, SCRS worked with SkillsUSA during the recent national compe-tition, held in Kansas City between June 23-27th, to demonstrate the industry's support and encourage-ment to not only the student competi-tors, but also to the schools and advisors who have put so much time into prepar-ing these future industry members.

As part of the support, SCRS pro-vided a Mega-Prize which was awarded as the headlining prize at the 100% Advisor Reception on June 24th. The highly sought after prize package, donated by SCRS and the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), included an all expenses paid trip for both the winning advisor and the stu-dent guest of their choice to attend the SEMA Show; including two airline tick-ets, two hotel rooms, two passes into the SEMA Show this fall, and two passes to the SCRS Repairer Driven Education series. The winning advisor was a very fortunate and well deserving teacher, John Wilson of Ohio Hi-Point Career Center in Springfield, OH.

"SkillsUSA and career and techni-cal education are about providing stu-dents with professional experiences," said Tim Lawrence, executive director of SkillsUSA. "This prize of a trip to the 2012 SEMA Show and SCRS Repairer Driven Education Program is an outstanding example of that kind of experience for both a student and an instructor. It's

also a motivator to have more students think of a career in collision repair. That's good for the industry and the students. It just doesn't get much better than this," Lawrence concluded.

"Supporting industry initiatives that develop a strongly rooted interest in the collision repair and automotive field is an important part of our collabor-ative work with SCRS at the SEMA Show," added Peter MacGillivray, VP, Events and Communications for SEMA. "We are glad to participate in this con-tribution, and hon-ored that the advisors were so genuinely excited to come see the amazing collision repair environment that SCRS has devel-oped with us. There are a world of oppor-tunities in the indus-try for these students, and we are proud to know that they will be able to make all the contacts they need at the SEMA Show to develop a prosperous career in the indus-try!"

GreenTech Automotive Unveils Revolutionary All-Electric MyCar, Marks Creation of 426 Manufacturing Jobs in Mississippi

manufacturing. We're proud to bring manufacturing jobs back and prove that the U.S. is still the world leader in techno-logical innovation and manufacturing."

GreenTech Automotive purchased Hong Kong-based EuAuto in 2010 and relocated the company's operations and manufacturing to the United States. The move was part of the company's strategy to create jobs in the United States and have a positive impact on a local econ-omy in need of revitalization. The com-pany leased a shuttered factory in Horn Lake, where skilled workers are now pro-ducing vehicles during the construction of its permanent 300,000-square-foot facility in Tunica, Miss.

GTA projects it will create 426 direct jobs by 2014, and an independent analy-sis by Evans, Carroll & Associates Inc. found that GTA's operations would cre-ate more than 7,400 direct, indirect and

induced jobs by 2014. As of September 2012, GTA had more than 840 employees enterprise-wide, and the company is on track to employ more than 900 people by the end of 2012.

"Thanks are due to Governor Barbour for being so receptive to our strategy to create manufacturing jobs in the United States," said McAuliffe. "This unlikely partnership illustrates the kind of jobs-before-politics attitude that will get America back on track by restoring manufacturing to its rightful place at the core of our economy. We're looking forward to continuing that relationship with Governor Bryant's new administra-tion." McAuliffe previously served as the chairman of the Democratic National Committee; Barbour served as chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Affordability is a key element of GTA's strategy for product development. With an expected base price of $15,500, MyCar will be considerably less expen-sive than other all-electric vehicles. Future models, including the MyCar EV planned for early 2014, will also be com-petitively priced. GTA's commitment to affordable alternative energy solutions earned the praise of former President Bill Clinton, who attended the Mississippi unveiling.

"MyCar is just the beginning of GTA's efforts to produce a wide range of environmentally friendly, energy-effi-cient, affordable vehicles," said Charles Wang, CEO of GreenTech. "Many elec-tric carmakers have tried to force elec-tric vehicle technology into the existing transportation paradigm, which invari-ably results in vehicles that are envi-ronmentally friendly but prohibitively expensive. GreenTech has broken the mold by adopting the revolutionary strategy of creating an affordable elec-tric car that will reshape how Americans think about meeting our daily transpor-tation needs."

MyCar is an ideal solution for cor-porations, government entities, rental car fleets, and corporate and college campuses in addition to individual trans-portation use such as commuting and daily errands.n

The winners of the eleventh annual North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards were announced today. The awards rec-ognize those vehicles most likely to shape the future of the automobile industry. This year, more than two dozen jurors participated in a selec-tion process that involved a total of 34 vehicles, each introduced to North America during this season's auto shows in Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Toronto, and New York.

The Production Preview Vehicle category is for those vehicles based on a model that has already been announced or planned for production. The finalists in this cat-egory included the Acura NSX, the Cadillac ELR, the Jaguar C-X16, and the Subaru BRZ STI.

A model much awaited after its brief absence from the market, Acura brings back their NSX "halo" car to take the honor of 2012 Production Preview Vehicle of the Year. "Like the original NSX, it emphasizes lightness over brute power, but with bolder, edgier styling that's quite attractive in today's context," said juror Chris Poole.

The Concept Car category recognizes those vehicles where passenger carrying is the primary intent. The finalists in the Car cat-egory were the BMW i8, The Cadillac Ciel, the Fisker Atlantic, and the Lexus LF-LC.

Marking its fourth competition as a category finalist, and the brand's second visit to the awards podium, BMW takes the 2012 Concept Car of the Year award with its i8 Concept Spyder. "With lines that remind me of icy water in a mountain stream, the BMW i8 takes open top driving into a new realm of environmen-tal responsibility, with the mission of ultimate driving machine firmly embedded," said juror Bill Shaffer.

The Concept Truck category recognizes those vehicles where cargo carrying is a significant con-

Bill 6051 Turn to Page 32

U.S. Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) has introduced House Bill 6051, the Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2012. The bill was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Bono Mack is a member of the committee and chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade.

The bill includes a section on the conditions of importation of vehicles and equipment, port inspections and samples for examination or testing, and

Rep. Bono Mack Introduces Motor Vehicle Safety Legislationpublic availability of recall information. It also includes provisions on the pro-motion of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Hotline for Manufacturer, Dealer and Mechanic Personnel. This section includes specific details regarding the Public Availability of Communications with Dealers and the Passenger Motor Vehicle Information Program.

The legislation goes on to discuss promotion of Vehicle Defect Reporting.

It is amended by adding at the end the following:

"(d) Motor Vehicle Defect Reporting Information.

"(1) Rulemaking required: Not later than 1 year after the date of enactment of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2012, the secretary shall prescribe regulations that require passenger motor vehicle manu-facturers.

"(A) to affix, in the glove compart-ment or in another readily accessible

location on the vehicle, a sticker, decal, or other device that provides, in simple and understandable language, information about how to submit a safety-related motor vehicle defect complaint to NHTSA;

"(B) to prominently print the information described in subparagraph (A) within the owner's manual; and

"(C) to not place such information on the label required under section 3 of the Automobile Information Disclosure Act (15 U.S.C. 1232).

"(2) Application: The requirements under para-graph (1) shall apply to pas-senger motor vehicles manu-factured in any model year beginning more than 1 year after the date on which a final rule is published under para-graph (1)."

Important to the col-lision industry will be a required Study of Crash Data Collection, which includes the following:

A New Zealand technology com-pany has fended off an international field of contenders to win a contract to supply one of the largest auto insurers in the US with a web-based market-place for car parts.

Wellington-based PartsTrader Markets Ltd has just completed a four state pilot of its online trading platform in America’s $US10 billion-a-year colli-sion repairs auto parts market.

PartsTrader is an online tendering system that allows automotive trade buyers to find parts for vehicle repairs, arising primarily but not exclusively from insurance claims. Last year in New Zealand vehicle parts valued at more than $70 million were obtained through the PartsTrader, a technology platform used by most of the major insurers and some 80% of collision repair shops.

The company has won a contract with a major US insurer to establish and run an internet market for vehicle parts

in the US. The market is modelled on the platform PartsTrader Markets that has operated in New Zealand since 2004.

PartsTrader US LLC Chief Executive Rob Cooper says the contract is a major coup for the Zealand technology sec-tor and if successful will lead to the creation of new jobs.

“All product development is undertaken in Wellington using a high-ly talented tech team. On current plans the company will require a further 15 staff in New Zealand focussed on prod-uct development. We are developing the online marketplace software using the latest web-based technologies to create a highly effective trading plat-form.

“If successful the business will generate a healthy profit and most of it will flow back to our NZ investors.”

The shareholders in PartsTrader Markets Ltd (PML) are Todd

Technologies, a subsidiary of the Todd Corporation; PML founders and inter-net investors, Colin and Rosie Bevan; the Grimseys Family Trust; and share-holders associated with the leading New Zealand software service provider, Intergen Ltd.

Rob Cooper says there was intense competition for the contract to provide the online marketplace for the US insurer.

“The cornerstone insurer carried out an exhaustive worldwide search and RFP process for suitable options, before settling on the PartsTrader prod-uct and business model.

“We have entered the US market with a locked-in five year agreement. It is an exciting development for our com-pany, but also an exciting step for the New Zealand technology sector gener-ally,” Rob Cooper says.

Call The #1 Mazda Parts Team in The Nation

The latest arrival to the Zoom-Zoom family and the first to fully incorporate the full suite of SKYACTIV technologies, the all-new 2013 Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV that offers the best high-way fuel economy of any SUV sold in North America, at 35 miles per gallon (mpg), and features class-leading overall fuel economy per-formance versus its direct competitors.

"The 2013 CX-5 is the vehicle com-pact SUV shoppers have been asking for - that only Mazda can build," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). "Poised to join a fast-growing and increasingly competitive segment, the all-new CX-5 offers more than just flash and features. Consumers also receive the performance and driving dynamics that have become synonymous with the Mazda brand. With its SKYACTIV under-pinnings and best-in-class fuel econo-my, CX-5 proves that 'fun' needn't be sacrificed for efficiency and that 'com-pact' doesn't mean compromise."

As the segment newcomer, all eyes are undoubtedly on the CX-5. Not one to enter the room and simply be a wallflower, CX-5 captures your attention - and keeps it. From its sleek styling and superior handling to unprecedented fuel economy and competitive pricing, who wouldn't want to ask this compact crossover SUV for a dance? Only Mazda can create a vehicle that evokes such a level of passion, performance and poise. And automotive critics agree that the all-new 2013 CX-5 cannot be ignored. The vehicle has already received industry awards for being the best in its segment - 2012 Drivers' Choice Award for "Best Small Utility Vehicle" from MotorWeek and "2012 Crossover of the Year" from Autobytel.com.

All new from the ground up, from

2013 Mazda CX-5 - The Latest Arrival To The Zoom-Zoom

sketch book to showroom floor, CX-5 began with a philosophy. Jinbai ittai, the oneness between car and driver, is instilled within every Mazda. Regardless of purpose - from the large-on-fun, small-in-size Mazda2 to the three-row, tow-the-kids-and-the-in-laws family hauler CX-9 - all Mazdas have a distinct feeling behind the wheel. But can we make that connection even better, in a more efficient, dynamic car? Enter SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY.

Developed as part of Mazda's "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom" strategy, SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY was developed based on creating overall vehicle effi-ciency, and perfectly complements the car-and-driver marriage of performance and passion. Not just a new engine. Not just a new transmission. Not just a

new body or a new chassis. More than a bigger bolt or a fancy fender flare that oth-ers feel qualify as "all new," CX-5 truly answers the ques-tions of more space, more utility, better handling, better safe-ty, increased perfor-mance and increased fuel economy. This is why the clean slate that is SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY will be the pillar of Mazda's next-generation of vehicles.

Efficiency in EngineeringDeveloped solely by Mazda,

SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY is not a pack-age or trim level but an all-encompass-ing, deeply imbedded philosophy that obtaining more power, more torque and more miles per gallon does not mean sacrificing fuel economy, design or safe-ty. Its first North American application was in Mazda's best-selling vehicle, the Mazda3, which was refreshed for the 2012 model year with a SKYACTIV engine and transmissions. CX-5 is the first global vehicle to receive all SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY components.

Under an expansive hood lies the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine.

There has been plenty written already on State Farm’s PartsTrader program. The fox (State Farm), via George Avery, is actually surprised that the chickens (collision repair industry members) are nervous and upset at their uninvited entrance into our coop to “fix” something that we contend isn’t broken, and at their offer that we can’t refuse…literally.

They keep telling us that this is a “win-win” proposition. In reality, “win-win” is an overused phrase to describe an arrangement that is almost always “win-lose.” There are, however, some true “win-win” scenarios in our industry, and so it would not be fair to refute Avery’s claim without a closer look. Before we do that, though, let’s first agree on a couple of assumptions. First, I’m going to assume that, within the vast empire of State Farm, there are some fairly intelligent people who are capable of analyzing the business of auto insurance, the business of collision repair and the claims management process. They do this not because they have noth-ing better to do, but because they have been tasked with the pursuit of higher profits. Despite what our current President has been telling everyone, our capitalist system was built on the selfish pursuit of profit and wealth. State Farm shouldn’t apologize in its quest to maximize profits, but neither should the collision repair industry. Profit is both good and necessary.

Second and just as importantly, I’m going to assume that the collision repair industry also contains many highly intelligent people - people who have built and currently operate successful businesses. People who are constantly innovating and looking for new ways to improve their processes. People who know how to crunch numbers. People who know what it takes to generate a profit which allows them to invest in their businesses and to fairly compensate themselves and their employees. So, as the title of this article states, while you [State Farm/Avery/PartsTrader] continue to tell us that this program is a good thing for the collision industry, I ask that you at least refrain from insulting our intelligence.

The parts component within collision repair is a complicated one, with a multitude of variables. So why does State Farm want to get into the parts business, especially when it involves significant resources within State Farm to manage it, and a fat check being cut to a third party (PartsTrader)? The simple answer is that they want to lower their average severity, which is an Orwellian way of saying they want to PAY OUT LESS. Yes, they believe that this program will mean smaller settlement checks than would otherwise be written, and if I am smarter than a 5th grader, that means more dead presidents in the pocket of State Farm. There, I said it, in simple language without using ambiguous and insulting phrases like “seeking greater efficiency.” State Farm simply wants more profit! There is no such thing as too much profit, and as Avery reminded us at CIC in July, State Farm is a mutual company which is obligated to maximize its profits.

But repairers have the exact same desire to maximize their profits, and they are similarly OBLIGATED to maximize their profits on behalf of their families and employees. So if they are buying parts at a discount of 25%, their goal is to somehow find a way to get this number up to 27% or 30%.

That said, all that’s left to determine is whose pocket(s) that additional profit will come from. From a common sense “napkin” analysis, State Farm’s additional profit will either come from the parts vendors or the repairers, or both. If you carefully read all the statements that have been issued by PartsTrader and State Farm, nowhere will you hear from either party that this program is guaranteed to not negatively impact the profit-ability or the profit margins of the repairer. They haven’t made these statements because they know they can’t.

The dollars State Farm desperately needs/wants will have to come from somewhere. The reports that came back from the PartsTrader program in New Zealand were alarming – the program almost eliminated gross part profit margins there. PartsTrader responded by stating that the US program is different than the NZ program and thus shouldn’t be compared. Is this an admission that the PartsTrader program in NZ did indeed harm the collision repair industry? If this is true, what steps has PartsTrader taken in NZ to remedy the harm their program has done? Are you, the fox, telling us that while yes, you did kill and eat the chickens in NZ, you won’t do the same here in the US?

If the above assumptions are correct, then we can dispense with all the carefully worded statements that do nothing but insult our intelligence. Rob Cooper of PartsTrader assures us that it is a good tool for repairers and that their “interests are in the right place,” while pushing a product in the US that has no voluntary collision repair customers; only those that have been coerced into using it. State Farm “knows it is getting into our business”; it simply wants higher profit, and doesn’t seem to care if it is at the repairer’s expense. The battlefield is set.

AASP/NJ E.D. to State Farm: “Don’t Insult Our Intelligence” An open letter from AASP/NJ Executive Director Charles Bryant

Collision Repair Industry Demonstrates Continued Growth at 2012 SEMA Show Summer temperatures aren't the

only things heating up this year; accord-ing to the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS), pre-registration to the Repairer Driven Education (RDE) series at the SEMA Show is hot!

Through July, SCRS tracked a nearly 300% increase in year to date (YTD) registrations for the acclaimed collision repair education series, in com-parison to the same time period last year. With well over two months still remaining until the Show opens on October 30th, the pace at which these sessions are filling is a key indicator that the content and location of the SCRS RDE program is not only on target with what the industry is looking for, but that it has become a highly anticipated industry event.

"The first two years of the RDE program brought a lot of very posi-tive response from the attendees, and we believe that the numbers clearly indicate that our program at the SEMA Show is delivering exactly what the industry is looking for right now," shared SCRS Chairman Aaron Clark. "We have

worked hard to put together a program that specifically addresses solutions to existing business conditions, and are glad to see the industry responding with early approval!"

While the participation levels continue to increase, SCRS has also reported interesting expansion in the participant demographics. In addition to a large independent collision repair attendee base from the U.S., 2012 num-bers have indicated notable additional growth in participation from Multi-Shop Operators (MSO), as well as from inter-national automotive businesses cur-rently representing more than a dozen different countries. SCRS explains that the growth in both of those areas illus-trates the universal relevance of the issues addressed in the sessions pro-vided by RDE, and the tangible benefit the information holds for collision busi-nesses, regardless of location, business model or business size.

The RDE series isn't the only area of the show where the collision industry is demonstrating early spikes in activity. Show management numbers through

the end of July indicated an increase in both collision industry exhibitor counts, as well as double digit growth in square footage occupied by exhibiting colli-sion industry companies. In addition to the Collision Repair & Refinish section of the show, there are many collision industry companies who have taken advantage of space that is available in other areas of the show such as in Tools & Equipment (North Hall), Restyling & Car Care Accessories (North Hall), Racing & Performance (Central Hall), Hot Rod Alley (Central Hall), and at the First Time & Featured Exhibitors (Upper South Hall) section. The presence that these companies have throughout the show truly demonstrates what an inte-gral partner the collision industry, and the businesses within it, has grown to be in the overall Show makeup.

A complete listing of the RDE ses-sions can be found at www.semashow.com/scrs. The 2012 Repairer Driven Education program is sponsored by supportive industry organizations such as SEMA, PPG, GM Genuine Parts, BASF, LKQ, AASP, PBES and CollisionHub. n

Armed with growing revenues and strong balance sheets, and to keep up with increasing vehicle demand, U.S. auto executives expect to boost domes-tic headcount and expand facilities in the coming year, according to a recent survey by KPMG LLP, the audit, tax, and advisory firm. Despite their overall bull-ishness, executives cite some significant challenges ahead, including persistent pricing pressures, a growing gap in quali-fied labor, and the ongoing European sales slowdown.

In the 2012 KPMG Automotive Industry Outlook survey, two-thirds say they've added personnel over the last year, and nearly three-quarters (72 per-cent) say their companies will continue to hire more domestic employees in the coming year – up significantly from 62 percent in KPMG's 2011 survey. Twenty-three percent of execs predict their com-panies' will increase personnel by more than 7 percent, 21 percent predict the

U.S. Auto Companies Will Add Employees and Expand Facilities This Year; Predict Strong Revenue and Capital Spending: KPMG Survey

range will be 4-6 percent, and 28 percent expect 1-3 percent headcount growth. Interestingly, when asked to predict when their company's U.S. headcount would return to pre-recession levels, nearly a third (32 percent) said they are already at pre-recession levels, or will be by the end of 2012.

"The survey results clearly demon-strate a U.S. automotive industry that is regaining confidence," said Gary Silberg, national automotive industry leader for KPMG LLP. "Even though the overall eco-nomic recovery remains weak, that is not the case in automotive where pent-up demand for vehicles in the U.S. is expect-ed to carry over for years. As a result, auto companies and suppliers are ramping up their hiring and production activities, and investing heavily in new products and facility expansion."

Silberg further notes that the indus-try has significant cash on hand "and companies are intent on putting it to use." In fact, 67 percent of the execs indi-

cated that their c o m p a n i e s ' have significant cash on the bal-ance sheet, and 64 percent say they'll invest that cash before the end of the year. A d d i t i o n a l l y , 73 percent say their company will increase capital spend-ing over the next year, with the highest-priority in investment in new product or services and expanding facili-ties.

" T h i s i n v e s t m e n t follows mar-ket success," adds Silberg. "Revenues are higher and execs

feel confident that revenues will grow stronger still." Seventy-six percent said revenues are up from last year, and 83 percent expect revenues will continue to rise next year.

Another key area for investment will be M & A. In fact, 47 percent of the auto executives surveyed by KPMG say it is likely that their company will be involved in a merger or acquisition as a buyer, while 10 percent say they'll be sell-ers. Executives indicate the key drivers behind the M&A activity over the next year will be access to new markets and customers, and access to new technolo-gies and products.

According to KPMG's Silberg, "The improved cash position allows U.S. auto manufacturers to be more aggressive to drive growth and product innovation, and sets the stage for an active M&A envi-ronment. In the survey, company execs also indicated a greater ability to get financing."

While auto executives express opti-mism about company revenue, growth, and hiring plans, they do so "against the backdrop of a tough economy," said Silberg. "They are not projecting an eco-nomic turnaround for years."

In fact, 82 percent of respondents to the KPMG survey predict the U.S. econ-omy will remain flat or see only moderate improvement next year, with 60 percent saying a full economic recovery won't happen until 2014 or later.

Beyond the economy, auto manu-facturers continue to point to growth barriers such as pricing pressures and energy prices. One of the most noted shifts in the 2012 survey findings was that the number of executives who cited the lack of a qualified workforce as the most significant growth barrier nearly doubled – from 10 percent in 2011 to 19 percent in 2012.

"We are hearing from U.S. automak-ers that they are poised for growth, but are struggling with their ability to find the right people with the right techni-cal skill sets for jobs they are looking to fill," added Silberg. "This is becoming an

Toyota USA Foundation Announces New Grant to Mobile Area Education Foundation The Toyota USA Foundation today

announced more than $1.3 million in new grants to support innovative K-12 math, science, engineering and environmen-tal science education programs, with a focus on programs that serve diverse and underserved communities. These new grants, combined with the more than $3.8 million in multi-year commitments, total to more than $5 million that the Toyota Foundation has disbursed to non-profit organizations this year.

Toyota USA Foundation grant deci-sions place a high priority on programs that value diversity, incorporate inter-disciplinary learning and are built around “real-world” classroom applications. In addition, the Foundation focuses on innovative and cost-effective programs that help students and educators devel-

op their abilities. The Mobile Area Education

AASP/NJ President Jeff McDowell echoed Bryant’s statements. “How many

more times are we going to let the insur-ance industry change the rules to their advantage? Things are hard enough out here. Enough is enough.”

Although the PartsTrader “pilot” program has only been introduced in a few test areas, AASP/NJ is encouraging members to get as much information as

increasing cause for concern, not just for auto companies, but for many companies in the manufacturing sector. It remains to be seen how companies will fill the gap."

Automakers are also faced with slow European vehicle sales, which nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of executives surveyed predict it will continue for at least another 18 months, including 15 percent who say the slowdown will linger for more than three years. Almost a third of execs (32 percent) say the European slowdown has had a moderate to signifi-

cant impact on their companies' profits, and 49 percent the impact on profitability thus far has only be seen. Surprisingly, 19 percent say sluggish European sales have had no impact at all on their profits.

KPMG's Silberg adds "We were surprised to see so many execs say the European slowdown has had only mini-mal impact on their profits, especially when you consider how global the indus-try is."

However, executives indicate that their companies are taking steps to mini-mize the impact of the European slow-down, including restructuring European

operations (46 percent), cost mitigation (43 percent), capacity rationalization (40 percent), changing distribution strategies and channels (23 percent), and making cutback outside Europe to compensate (10 percent).

According to the KPMG survey, con-cerns about potential tax reform also exist for auto executives. Sixty-eight percent of respondents say the introduction of a Value Added Tax (VAT) would negatively impact the auto industry, and 88 percent think the U.S. corporate tax rate should be reduced from its current 35 percent rate.n

In July 2002, NASCAR Technical Institute (NASCAR Tech), a 146,000-square-foot training facility in Mooresville, N.C. – known as "Race City, USA" – elevated the term "auto mechanic." The campus opened as the first technical training school to combine a complete automo-tive technology program and a NASCAR-specific motorsports program offering NASCAR technician courses. NASCAR Tech, a branch campus of Universal Technical Institute of Arizona, Inc., also became the first exclusive education partner of NASCAR, racing's leader. Now, NASCAR Tech is celebrating 10 years of starting careers and has changed the vernacular from auto mechanic to auto-motive technician and far surpassed the goal of becoming the first in the industry. NASCAR Tech has become the leader in the industry for technical education. It

On Wednesday, July 11, 2012, NASCAR Tech hosted an on-campus cel-ebration with more than 400 students in attendance. The highlight of the day was the Legends Panel Discussion in which FOX/SPEED/TNT commentator Larry McReynolds; engine builder Doug Yates, CEO of Roush-Yates Engines; and NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison answered questions and signed autographs. Shige Hattori of Hattori Racing Enterprises also made a special appearance and students were able to view three NASCAR show

"We are fortunate to have had such exceptional partnerships with NASCAR, racing teams, industry partners and deal-erships that have offered our graduates opportunities to wake up every day and work in industries that they love and are passionate about," said Jennifer Waber-Bergeron, campus president for NASCAR Technical Institute. "The work these stu-dents and grads undertake each day goes beyond the definition of auto mechanic. The work is so technical we wouldn't call them anything other than technicians."n

The National Automobile Dealers Association has had a long-standing position in support of a level playing field, meaning lawful, equal and fair treatment by a manufacturer for all deal-ers, both large and small. Unfortunately, history shows that, at times, manufac-turers’ incentive pricing programs cre-ate short-term incentives that favor the larger, more urban dealerships to the detriment of the smaller, more rural deal-erships.

Recent history also shows that the long-term effects of discriminatory pro-grams are to marginalize the smaller dealers and place them at a competitive

NADA Chairman Commentary: Some Manufacturer Stair-Step Programs Are a ‘Cancer in the Industry’

disadvantage in their marketplace. These programs also have a ten-

dency to cause confusion among con-sumers and dealers as to the actual dealer cost of vehicles. This leads to con-sumer doubt and mistrust that reduces the value of the manufacturer’s brand. It also undercuts the goodwill between consumer and dealer. This is certainly not good business for either the OEM or the dealer.

Dealers of all sizes have recognized the inherent unfairness of a manufactur-er’s discriminatory pricing that tilts the playing field in favor of some dealers. For example, Earl Hesterberg, CEO of Group 1 Automotive, emphasized the perni-ciousness of these stair-step programs as

recently as May 21 in Automotive News, where he characterized them as “… a cancer in the industry that isn’t good for dealers or customers.”

The fact is, manufacturers can unfairly create real competitive disad-vantages for some dealers and cause real customer confusion and dissatisfaction in the marketplace.

The best way to maintain a level playing field is for factories to focus on what they usually do so well: build qual-ity cars and trucks and avoid disparate treatment of their dealers that can limit their ability to compete. Let all dealers do what they do best: vigorously com-pete in pricing, service and otherwise for the customer’s business.n

view of objects or people direct-ly behind the vehicle, stan-dard SiriusXM Satellite Radio, which provides coast-to - coast tunes, optional programmable power liftgate that can be set to open to a lower height, clearing garage obstruc-tions or mak-ing it easier to reach for those of shorter stat-ure, an optional remote vehicle start that can be used to auto-matically heat up a cold Terrain on a January morning or cool it down on a hot August after-noon and more.

Chassis and suspension

Terrain is

built on a body-integral struc-ture with single-piece body side stampings and targeted appli-cations of high-strength steel. These elements create a solid, quiet driving experience.

L o n g , 1 1 2 . 5 - i n c h wheelbase and wide front and rear tracks sup-port a car-like

ride and handling traits. The long wheel-base and wide tracks reduce body roll for a more stable driving experience.

Terrain's strong structure with four-wheel independent suspension system provides a greater control and driver feedback.

StabiliTrak electronic stability con-trol standard on the Terrain keeps the vehicle in its intended path in the event of an emergency maneuver while stan-dard four-wheel anti-lock brakes provide traction control.

Efficient, proven powertrainsBoth the standard Ecotec 2.4L

engine and available 3.0L V-6 in the GMC Terrain feature fuel-saving direct injec-tion and continuously variable valve tim-ing technology.

The standard 2.4L Ecotec direct-injected I-4 engine delivers 182 horse-power with segment-best highway fuel economy of 32 mpg (on FWD version) and up to 600 miles of highway-only cruising range per tank.

The available 3.0L direct-injected V-6 engine is rated at 264 horsepower with EPA-estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg (FWD version.) On vehicles with federal emissions, the engine can oper-ate on E85 ethanol, regular unleaded fuel or a combination of both. E85 ethanol is made of renewable plant materials and helps reduce both greenhouse gases and petroleum consumption. Terrain's effi-cient six-speed automatic transmission with an “Eco” mode on 2.4L-equipped models alters shift points to improve fuel economy.n

CAPA continues to broaden the expertise of its board with the elec-tion of Tim Adelmann of ABRA, Inc. Mr. Adelmann was elected to the collision repairer position vacated by Mike West, who recently retired and closed his repair shop business in Tukwila, Washington.

“Tim Adelmann is a long-standing and respected leader in the collision repair industry and we are excited to have him join CAPA’s efforts to insure that the market has truly high quality alternative parts,” said Jack Gillis, CAPA’s Executive Director. “Tim will be a valu-able resource as CAPA continues to expand on its diversity of standards and growth in part availably.”

CAPA Adds Collision Repairer Tim Adelmann to BoardTim Adelmann is the Executive

Vice President – Business Development at ABRA, Inc. He opened the second ABRA repair center in 1985 as General Manager. Shortly thereafter, he became Vice President of Operations and in 1997 he was named Chief Operating Officer, a position he held until July 2004. During that time he oversaw ABRA’s growth from two repair centers to eighty-eight. In July 2004 he assumed the role of Executive Vice President of Business Development and works strategically and operation-ally with ABRA’s clients. Prior to joining ABRA, he was the Production & Quality Manager for Micromedics Corporation in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Mr. Adelmann also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Collision Repair Education Foundation and Creative Living, a Columbus, Ohio, non-profit organization encouraging independent living for adults with severe physical dis-abilities. He maintains several strategic partnerships with Insurance Advisory Councils throughout the industry.

“Tim brings an extraordinary amount of ‘hands-on’ knowledge of the repair shop industry to CAPA’s Board. We are thrilled to have Tim join CAPA’s efforts protecting both the market and consumers from poor quality parts,” said Clark Plucinski, President of CAPA’s Board of Directors.n

Customer satisfaction with the auto claims experience has returned to levels similar to those in the second half of 2011, after a notable decrease in the first quarter of 2012, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2012 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study(SM)-Wave 3 .

The study measures customer sat-isfaction with the claims experience for auto physical damage loss. Depending on the complexity of the claim, an indi-vidual may experience some or all of the following, which are measured in the study: first notice of loss; claim service interaction; damage appraisal; repair process; rental experience; and settle-ment.

Overall customer satisfaction has increased by 10 points (on a 1,000-point scale) to 852 from the first quarter of 2012. Satisfaction with settlement, the largest driver of increased satisfaction, is one of the most improved among the six factors, with a 12-point increase from the first quarter of 2012. Satisfaction in all factors has increased in the second quarter, compared with the first quarter.

The study finds the amount paid out-of-pocket (the amount of money paid over and above the deductible) decreases by $36 to an average of $218 in the second quarter of 2012, com-pared with the first quarter. Among the 21 percent of claimants who had an out-of-pocket expense, the percentage that

J.D. Power and Associates Reports: Auto Insurance Claims Satisfaction Rebounds after Declining Significantly In the First Quarter of 2012

spent more than $300 has decreased to 22 percent, compared with 25 percent in the first quarter. Settlement satisfac-tion falls significantly among claimants paying in excess of $300 above and beyond their deductible, with satisfac-tion 89 index points lower than among those who pay only their insurance deductible.

"The amount spent out-of-pock-et most definitely affects the percep-tion of fairness of a settlement, further influencing satisfaction with the over-all auto claims process," said Jeremy Bowler, senior director of the insurance practice at J.D. Power and Associates. "Additionally, the settlement factor is influenced highly by the clarity and thoroughness of the settlement expla-nation given to the customer by the insurance company. If the customer understands the process and what they are paying for, they tend to have higher satisfaction with their experience."

After increasing steadily for two consecutive quarters, the average claim duration for a repairable vehicle (from reporting the claim to the vehicle being returned to the customer, is now 13.7 days, a slight improvement from 14 days in the first quarter of 2012. Most of this improvement is due to custom-ers taking their vehicle to the repair facility quicker. In the first quarter find-ings, claim duration had increased due to customers waiting nearly one day

longer, on average, to take their vehicle in for repair, perhaps influenced by the holiday season. This increase is reduced by nearly one-half day in the second quarter and may have influenced the improved performance of insurers in managing expectations for the length of the claims process. Satisfaction with the repair process has rebounded from the first quarter by 10 points.

"While average damage severity and, hence, the repair time is relatively unchanged from last quarter, we are seeing an increase in satisfaction," said Bowler. "This increase may be due to the perception that the claims process is moving faster. From the time a person notifies their insurer of the accident or loss, on average, vehicles were getting to the repair facility half a day faster, expediting appraisals such that settle-ment explanations also occurred an average of half a day sooner-both key metrics for delivering a satisfying claims experience."

The 2012 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study-Wave 3 is based on responses from more than 2,600 auto insurance customers who filed a claim within the past 6 months. The study excludes claimants whose vehicle only incurred glass/windshield damage or was stolen, or who only filed roadside assistance claims. Survey data for Wave 3 of the study was gathered between April and May 2012. n

for the route drivers. "We were fortunate that we had two weeks of good weather," Thigpen said.

Since that September, the operation has smoothed out considerably. Everyone has his sea legs and the parts department is running like a finely tuned race car.

Today Thigpen's 48-member team operates from a 38,000 square-foot facil-ity. With more than 350 years of combined parts experience, they are rooted at Rick Hendrick Chevrolet.

"We've had very little turnover," Thigpen stated. "Of the 20 people Steve originally brought with him, 17 are still here. Stability is really a key element of our success. In fact, Mr. Hendrick puts a lot of emphasis on stability."

Three outside sales people drum up new business and keep in touch with current wholesale customers in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina. Ten route trucks make most of the Georgia deliveries. Trucks work routes 150 miles from the dealership at least twice a day, and much more frequently for custom-ers in closer proximity.

Out-of-state orders are delivered by contract carriers. "Any out-of-state order we receive by 6 p.m. is delivered by noon the next day," Sullens asserted.

When asked if there was a key ingre-dient that contributed to the continued growth in business, Thigpen and Sullens both answered, service. Pointing to the 98% fill rate, Sullens said, "Service has a lot to do with our success. We are able to do what we do because of the years of experience of our staff and the short cycle time we provide the customer."

After nearly four years, the key chal-lenge remains the same: Convincing cus-tomers that OE parts are better and less expensive in the long run than aftermarket parts. "This business used to just be about service," Sullens explained, "now it's ser-vice, price and quality."

Thigpen added, "It's a constant battle to get customers to understand OE parts are better. We have to do a good job mak-ing them aware of the differences. There is a quality difference and there is a fit differ-ence. In the end, it's cheaper to use the OE part that fits than have a technician waste time trying to make an aftermarket part fit, or reordering the part if he can't."

Even if price alone is the determining factor, Sullens said in many cases they can meet or beat aftermarket pricing. "GM's 'Bump the Competition' program includes 4,000 parts numbers that we can actively price match," he said.

Finally, Thigpen and Sullens credit Charlotte-based Rick Hendrick Automotive Group, a nearly $5 billion business employ-ing more than 7,000 people, with providing them the tools, support and encourage-ment to succeed.

"This is a great organization," Thigpen said. "It all starts with Mr. Hendrick who believes if you take care of the employees, they will take care of the customer. He has a winning attitude and that flows from the top down."

Located at 3277 Satellite Boulevard in Atlanta, Rick Hendrick Chevrolet's parts department is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. you can reach them by phone at 800-240-0119.n

by Russ HeapsIn a matter of hours one sunny September day in

2008, the parts department of Rick Hendrick Chevrolet at Gwinnett Place changed in a very big way. It morphed from mild-mannered David Banner into the Incredible Hulk.

"We went from 12 to 32 employees overnight," explained Rusty Thigpen, the dealership's parts direc-tor. "There was not a lot of advance notice, maybe a few hours. And then within a week, we added 10 more."

Bringing about the abrupt transformation was the closing of Tom Jumper Chevrolet just north of downtown Atlanta with its extensive wholesale-parts operation. It was the perfect storm of a savvy Rick Hendrick Auto Group organization able to pivot on a dime, a team of highly talented parts experts thrown out on the street, and hundreds of wholesale-parts customers left searching for a new OE supplier.

Within hours of the announcement of Tom Jumper Chevrolet's closing, its wholesale parts man-ager Steve Sullens, who serves in the same capacity at Rick Hendrick Chevrolet and has 28 years of Chevy parts experience, and 20 of his people were part of Thigpen's team.

"I brought 20 people with me," Sullens said. "These were people who had long-term relationships with wholesale customers. The business was already there; we just needed the warehouse and facilities to get going."

At the time, the parts business at Rick Hendrick primarily serviced the dealership's own service depart-

ment while also catering to walk-in retail customers. According to Thigpen, wholesale sales was only a small part of the $800,000 monthly sales volume for the parts department before the transformation. "We did some wholesale," he said, "but we were mainly a shop and retail organization."

Thigpen and Sullens scrambled to blend their teams as they worked to create a seamless transition for their wholesale customers. "We only had four or five days to get Steve's team on board," Thigpen emphasized.

Those who have expanded their staff by one or two people are aware of the logistical hurdles involved. Phone lines must be added; extra desks, chairs and supplies scrounged; and working space secured. Adding 20 additional people was a monu-mental task; however, the change also required colos-sal increases in inventory and support staff.

With the expansion, the parts inventory now hovers around $3.2 million -- about $2.8 million of that are collision-related parts.

"We had to find a warehouse, get more delivery trucks, establish the delivery routes, enter customers into the computer system, all within a very short time frame," Thigpen said. "It was an exciting time."

Finding a warehouse large enough to house the huge bump in inventory was critical. "We had less than 10,000 square feet in our warehouse and it was already full." Thigpen explained.

As the search continued for a bigger warehouse, parts began piling up in the dealership parking lot. Sections were taped off, establishing loading areas

Developers of the SKYACTIV-G engine were aiming for a lightweight design that produced more from less. At 13:1, SKYACTIV-G features the world's highest compression ratio for a mass-produced car. Coupled with an all-new 4-2-1 exhaust system as well as redesigned pistons and other components, chal-lenges associated with high compres-sion (such as knocking and operation on 87-octane fuel) were resolved. As a result, SKYACTIV-G is 10 percent light-er, delivers more torque, improves fuel economy and lowers emissions when compared to the MZR 2.0-liter gasoline engine.

CX-5 delivers 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 150 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. Redline is achieved at 6,500 rpm. With a svelte 3,208-pound body (FWD, SKYACTIV-MT models), CX-5 is one of the lightest vehicles in the segment. With a choice of transmissions in either the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic, a 2,000-pound towing capacity and an optional all-new all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, the 2013 CX-5 truly offers a little of everything for everyone.

The SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission (Sport models) brings the crisp, tight shifting and direct, sporty feeling of the MX-5 to the CX-5. To accomplish this, not only was the shift-lever stroke shortened by about 10 percent compared to the cur-rent six-speed manual trans-mission but other technolo-gies were applied as well: a down-type system that uses the forces of gravity to ease upshifts, lock ball-type syn-chronizer for smooth gear changes, shift load canceller to make the lever action lighter, slide ball bear-ing and locating 2nd and 3rd gears on a common shaft that drastically reduces the size and weight of the unit. SKYACTIV-MT is lighter by approximate-ly 4.4 pounds, while still achieving a quicker and precise response feel. Only Mazda would go to this level of detail on a manual transmission in an SUV,

but only in the details can the depth of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY's engineering philosophy truly be seen.

The SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission combines the best features of today's transmission technologies by integrating the key advantages of a conventional automat-ic transmission, Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). At low speeds, SKYACTIV-Drive acts like a conventional torque-converter automatic, with all the benefits of easy and smooth speed control that these conventional systems offer. At higher speeds (more than five to eight mph), the torque converter is locked and the transmission operates with all the benefits of a dual clutch - fast shifts, minimal power-delivery inter-ruption and rev-matched downshifts. Additionally, SKYACTIV-Drive is smaller and lighter, and contributes a fuel effi-ciency increase of approximately four to seven percent over conventional trans-missions.

Purposeful StylingA new five-point "signature wing"

front grille commands the front fascia.

Its black elongated trapezoi-dal pattern adds masculine depth while eagle-eyed, wraparound headlamps extend out, seemingly flirt-ing a head-turning "hello" to passersby. This is KODO.

KODO, or "Soul of Motion," is a design language inspired by nature, which

evokes how both startling beauty and immense power can be captured within a single motion. First unveiled in 2010 on the SHINARI concept car, a long-and-lean, four-door sports coupe, and then on the MINAGI concept SUV, from which the CX-5 is based, KODO exemplifies the direction of Mazda's future sheet metal strokes. An early indication with CX-5 is that all-new production offerings from Mazda will be nothing short of striking.

Not a drag to drive, the Zoom-Zoom DNA of the CX-5 further adds to the benefit of improved fuel economy. With a 0.33 coefficient of drag, CX-5 is one of the most aerodynamic compact crossover SUVs currently on the market.

Redefined InteriorJust as the exterior stirs the soul,

the 2013 CX-5's interior sparks the sens-es. Persuasive and impressive, CX-5's interior grabs you - but you're the one that refuses to let go. The driver-orient-ed cockpit is intuitive, with a multitude of frequently-used controls within reach. There is nothing you can't do while ensconced in utmost comfort.

Long and luxury-laced, CX-5 sits on a segment-leading 106.3-inch wheel-

base, seats five and offers a cabin that is undeniably flexible in order to accommodate the demands of today's active lifestyles of all work and all play. Rear cargo room is not only cavernous but clever. Not the first to offer 40/20/40-split rear seats, CX-5 simply does it better by offering the segment's only fold-flat three-piece independent seats. A single-action topside button releases the left- and right-side seats to fold down while a looped handled frees the middle seat. CX-5 shows that whatever life punts its way, it will catch.n

sideration. The finalists in the Truck cat-egory were the Chrysler 700C Minivan, the Land Rover DC 100, the Land Rover DC 100 Sport, and the Smart for-us.

In this brand's first-ever competi-tion as a category finalist, and its first visit to the awards podium, Smart's

vision for an eco-friendly urban cargo carrier, the "for-us" concept takes the 2012 award for Concept Truck of the Year. "Smart leaps into the 21st century with their small electric-drive 'for-us', com-plete with pickup-like hauling capabil-ity," said juror Bob Kroupa..

From amongst the segment win-ners in the Car, Truck and Production

Preview categories, the Acura NSX post-ed the highest overall score to earn the top award as Most Significant Concept Vehicle of the 2012.

as possible before it reaches New Jersey. “There is a wealth of information about this program in most of the industry publications as well as online,” Bryant said. “And if you take the time to read it, you will see that the vast majority of shops who have ‘volunteered’ for the program have regretted it. We don’t

AASP/NJ From Page 19want that happening in New Jersey and we will do everything we can to prevent it.”

Many AASP/NJ members are already skeptical of the program. “Can State Farm guarantee its network shops that this PartsTrader program will not negatively impact shops’ parts profit margins?” asked one AASP/NJ member. “If the answer is no, how does this fact mesh with State Farm’s

contention that they are committed to a healthy, profitable repair industry? Does this imply that our industry is presently too healthy or too profitable? Unbelievable.”

Bryant thinks the controversy is one the collision industry needs to act on immediately. “We hope the rest of the country continues to step up and join us. It is our industry. We need to keep it that way.”n

Representatives, regarding the quality of data collected through the National Automotive Sampling System, including the Special Crash Investigations Program.

(b) Review: The administrator of NHTSA (referred to in this section as the "administration") shall conduct a com-prehensive review of the data elements collected from each crash to determine if additional data should be collected. The review under this subsection shall include input from interested parties, including suppliers, automakers, safety advocates, the medical community and research organizations.

(c) Contents: The report issues under this section shall include:

(1) the analysis and conclusions the administration can reach from the amount of motor vehicle crash data col-lected in a given year;

(2) the additional analysis and con-clusions the administration could reach if more crash investigations were con-ducted each year;

(3) the number of investigations per year that would allow for optimal data analysis and crash information;

(4) the results of the comprehen-sive review conducted pursuant to sub-section (b);

(5) the incremental costs of collect-ing and analyzing additional data, as well as data from additional crashes;

(6) the potential for obtaining pri-vate funding for all or a portion of the costs under paragraph (5);

(7) the potential for recovering any additional costs from high-volume users of the data, while continuing to make the data available to the general public free of charge;

(8) the advantages or disadvantag-es of expanding collection of non-crash

data instead of crash data;(9) recommendations for improve-

ments to the administration's data collec-tion program; and

(10) the resources needed by the administration to implement such recom-mendations.

Finally, a section on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Electronics, Software and Engineering Expertise - which references the Council for Vehicle Electronics, Vehicle Software and Emerging Technologies to build, inte-grate and aggregate the Administration's expertise in passenger motor vehicle electronics and other new and emerg-ing technologies - is also included. The Automotive Service Association (ASA) had previously reported on the National Research Council's (NRC) released report on Automotive Electronic Safety, which called for more NHTSA oversight on new vehicle technologies.n

Car insurance resource Automobile.com released the findings of their latest consumer survey compar-ing the cost to insure vehicles from the luxury arms of the "big three" Japanese automakers. For the purpose of this study, Infiniti, Lexus and Acura were examined.

The study found drivers of Infiniti vehicles paid the least for insurance each year at an average of $958.28. Next was Lexus drivers who reported paying an average of $981.30. Acura was deter-mined to be the most costly of the three at an average of $1184.06, or 24% higher than Infiniti and 21% higher than Lexus.

Lexus, owned by the Toyota Motor Corporation, is currently Japan's top selling luxury automaker. Acura is owned by the Honda Motor Company and Infiniti is owned by the Nissan Motor Company.

"It was interesting to compare this

Automobile.com Survey Compares Cost to Insure Japanese Luxury Vehiclesstudy with another recent survey we commissioned that covered the domes-tic big three automakers," Automobile.com columnist Andrew Evans said. "While the American brands were virtu-ally identical, we did see a statistically significant disparity in this new survey."

Evans said policyholder age was among the biggest differences when examining possible reasons for the dis-parity.

"The average Lexus respondent was approximately eight years older than the Acura and Infiniti respondents," Evans said. "This is surprising because it didn't seem to translate into the poli-cy costs overwhelmingly as Acura was shown to be the most expensive on average. This suggests the overall value of the vehicles or depreciation factors may be a stronger determinant."

Nothing Fits Like Original BMW PartsSkillsUSA returned to Kansas City on June 23-27, 2012 for its 48th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference, a showcase of career and technical education students.

More than 15,000 students, teach-ers, education leaders and representa-tives from more than 1,100 national cor-porations, trade associations, businesses and labor unions participated in the event with 94 hands-on skill and leader-ship competitions.

Hundreds of automotive students gathered there for a showdown for all the gold. Armed with their tool boxes and spray guns, they represented the top collision repair and automotive refin-ishing students from around the country.

When the dust cleared, four stu-dents claimed the gold medals, taking home the country’s top honors in their competitions, along with scholarships, prize money and new tools.

Automotive Refinishing Technology

The automotive refinishing tech-nology competition included surface preparation, spray gun operation, paint mixing, matching and applying, solving paint application problems, determin-ing finish defects, causes and cures, and utilizing safety precautions.
