With prize giving behind us and 2019 drawing to a close it only remains for me to wish you all a peaceful and relaxing Christmas and summer period with your friends and whanau. The year has once again been a spectacular one for the young men of Southland Boys' High school with academic, sporting and cultural performances that set them apart from their peers.
Education is once again a political football and reviews and changes are both ongoing and forthcoming. As a school we remain committed to delivering the highest quality 'all boy' focused education we are able to. It is with this in mind and after great deliberation that the BoT opted not to take the offer of a donation payment made by the Government in 2020. The drivers behind this decision are simply that we could not maintain and continue to develop the level of hands-on and experiential education opportunities that boys thrive on based on the offer made. These are not offerings that we wish to cut back on. The school has always worked in partnership with its parents and community to supply materials for technological subjects and opportunities in areas such as Deep Cove, Boyd Creek and Borland Lodge to benefit the education of the young men of the school. Into the future we hope to continue in this way whilst anticipating a promised review of school operating costs. Once again, I wish you a Merry Christmas, a safe and relaxing summer and a prosperous New Year.

Tena koutou katoa. Merry Christmas and good tidings to you all. On behalf of the Board of Trustees I wanted to take this final opportunity for 2019 to thank you for your continued support of our school. The successes and pitfalls our sons experience during their time at secondary school are shared Whanau experiences and as parents it can be hard work parenting teenagers. I just wanted to say thank you so much for everything you do. 2019 has been a momentous year for our school in terms of governance. We now have all our school’s policies available for parents, staff and board to view at the school’s website. Please
have a look on the website and participate in policy reviews when they are due. We have also implemented a new Strategic plan for 2019 and our focus is two targets; teaching, learning and pastoral wellbeing. We will report 2019 results back to you in March, as soon as the NCEA data is available. The results will ensure the Board is well informed to look at what went well, what didn’t and where we need to focus financial resources and support for 2020. Secondary schools require significant funding to provide the full range of options that are available to all students of Southland Boys’ High School and to support each of them to reach their potential. Following deliberations and budget comparisons, the Board of trustees have made the decision that we would not opt in to the $150 donation per student offered by the Government. We understand that as parents you have an expectation of free education however, the reality is that the contribution being offered is not adequate to cover the real costs in 2019 to educate a secondary student and provide a high quality, well supported learning environment. To have opted in would cause serious and significant financial risk to our school and it may still be a possibility without your support. Without parent contributions we could not provide outdoor education camps at Deep Cove, Borland Lodge and Boyd Creek. In areas of the curriculum, such as Outdoor education, technology, catering and arts we rely on parent contributions for some of the “take home” costs. Without your contribution students would be unable to participate in practical application and would only complete theory based essential requirements.

In order to provide a high quality 21st century education for boys, we rely on your support and goodwill. We hope we continue to see your financial support for the goods and services we provide your sons in 2020. The Board of Trustees would like to thank the Rector, Simon Coe and his team who provide a stable environment for our boys that wraps them in a Korowai of safety, belonging and connectedness. These are critical connections to support positive student outcomes and learning what it is to be a good man. Simon is supported by a team of highly qualified, professional teachers and support staff who walk alongside the boys on their educational journey. From the cleaners, ground staff, administration team and teaching support staff, everyone in this school is valued for their contribution. Thank you all for your unwavering support for boys’ education and making a difference to the lives of the young men who walk through our corridors. Former Board Chair John Rabbitt retired in June this year after 16 years’ service to the Board of Trustees of Southland Boys’ High School. John was preceded by Peter Heenan (2003-2005) and old boy, the late Earle Dale. Thank you, and your Whanau for the significant time and energy that you poured into Governance of this school. You epitomise the Boys’ High values of respect, responsibility, perseverance, honesty, service and compassion. I also want to acknowledge Board members who retired in May 2019; Willie Menlove (2015-2019) and Ken Dykes (2016-2019), both whom I consider to be humble, intuitive and knowledgeable gentlemen. We have achieved so much together in a short time and I sincerely thank you for your friendships and service to our school. Finally, we say goodbye to former Chair Peter Heenan (2003-2005) for his second time on the Board (2017-2019). He came back in 2017 with his eagle eye for finance and supported our new Rector and Business Manager. Thank you, Peter and also Dee for allowing him to take on another Board - he is a very busy man in our city, and we are grateful. To the current Board of Trustees; Deputy Chair Sarah Brown, Cam Froude, Charlene Withy, Emma Smaill, Paul Stirling, Staff Representative Warren Ruwhiu and Student Representatives, formerly Kaea Edwin and currently George Heenan - thank you all for your perseverance, commitment and service. Our schools and our communities are better places when we volunteer our skills and lived experiences in the pursuit of higher educational outcomes for all students at Southland Boys’ High School. Nga mihi koutou. Be well, be kind and stay safe over the holiday period. Ka nui te mihi kia koutou katoa Janice Ormsby BOT Chair 2019

Sleep Hygiene Sleep hygiene is about developing good sleep habits. Our young
people’s sleep hygiene is becoming compromised by spending hours
on social media, video gaming, texting and watching Netflix movies.
Consequently, young people have poor sleep habits and are
constantly tired in the mornings or during the day and may become
easily frustrated or angry.
Here are some useful tips for parents/caregivers:
Get regular: Train your body to get into a regular rhythm, same bedtime and
get up routines every day
Sleep when sleepy: Only try to sleep when you are tired, don’t lie awake in bed hoping to go to
sleep. If you can’t sleep after 20 minutes get up and do something calming,
make a hot drink, read a book, write in your journal, jigsaw puzzle etc until you
feel sleepy (stay away from TV and social media)
Bed is for sleeping: Try not to use your bed for anything other than sleeping so that your body
comes to associate bed with sleeping. If you use your bed as a place to watch
TV, eat, read, play on social media your body will not learn this connection
Sleep rituals: Develop your own sleep rituals to remind your body it is time for sleeping. Can
be having a shower, having a snack, do some breathing exercises, relaxing
music, jigsaw puzzle or write in your journal etc
Eat right: A healthy, balanced diet will help you to sleep well. Some people feel hungry
before bedtime, get a snack or a warm drink (not coffee) to have 15 minutes
before you go to bed
Exercise: Regular exercise is a good idea to help with sleep. Try not to exercise before
you go to bed. Go for a walk in the morning or when you get home at night, get
involved in a sport, go to the gym.
The Right Space: It is important that your bed and bedroom are quiet and comfortable for
sleeping. A warm space and warm bed are helpful for sleeping. Make sure you
have curtains to block out any excess lighting, ear plugs if there is constant
noise outside your bedroom.
Routines: Make a plan, keep to your routines, getting to bed at the same time each day,
having a drink, wind down activities before trying to sleep, put your cellphone
in a different place in the house to charge or turn it completely off at night.
REMEMBER: A new habit takes 21 days to
establish, it you break the cycle you must start
the 21 days again.

Year 8 Market Day On Tuesday 19 November, Year 8 held their annual Market Day. Our task was for each class to choose
a charity to fundraise for and then produce a product to sell to make as much money for our chosen
charity as possible. Leading up to Market Day we learnt about decision making, production, marketing,
finances and advertising. We spent weeks planning and preparing our products for the big day selling
at our stalls. Thankfully, the weather held off and we raised $2,212.00. Room 17 presented the SPCA
with a cheque for $181.00. Rooms 19 and 22 presented the Cancer Society a cheque for $820.00.
Rooms 18, 20 and 31 expressed their upmost gratitude to the Southland Charity Hospital by presenting
them with a cheque for $1,122.00. A big thank you to the Year 7 boys, invited schools, parents and
teachers who participated and had fun trying all the activities and eating the yummy food.

Community Notices Limitless Programme The Limitless programme is for high school aged children with a disability, whether that be an
intellectual disability or physical disability. As it is our pilot programme, we are looking for more
physically capable children, but this may change with future programmes. The programme includes
climbing, abseiling, archery with soft tip arrows, a few high ropes elements and team building games.
This may vary slightly depending on the participants.
Our aim is to ensure these children have equal opportunities to explore possibilities and challenge
themselves in an environment of safety and support. Our clients (and our instructors) have really
valued previous programmes we have run within this community.
If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch.
