ANNUAL REPORT 2018SOUTHPORT FAIRFIELD BRIDGEPORT

2 | Wakeman Boys & Girls Club

A recent study by Boys & Girls Clubs of America found Club kids are more likely than their peers to graduate from high school, participate in daily physical activity, and serve as volunteers in their local communities. The pursuit of these outcomes is evident each day at Wakeman as 500+ members look to the Club sites as their safe havens --- fun places to be active, explore passions, connect with caring role models, and build brighter futures for themselves and their community.

The need for the Club has never been greater.

Poor nutrition, academic deficiencies, emotional well-being, constant technological distraction and social justice are just some of the concerns of many Wakeman families. The Club staff is intent on helping kids understand and manage these life challenges, while being careful to balance the need for discipline and structure with the spontaneity of casual childhood experiences.

In addition, our staff continues to foster and explore new partnerships on behalf of the membership:

• Hofstra University’s Wise Guys & Gals STEM Program brings together tweens from our Southport and Smilow-Burroughs clubhouses providing new tools to help them understand the basic principles of teamwork and collaboration.

• The City of Bridgeport’s Nutrition Center assisted us by providing our low-income summer campers at the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse with 5,000 meals last year.

• The Holland Hill Mentoring Program, a partnership with Kiwanis Club of Fairfield and Fairfield Public Schools, launched in 2018. The Holland Hill initiative emulates our 15-year-old program at McKinley School, which recently welcomed its 35th former mentee back as a volunteer mentor.

Behind the scenes, our Board of Trustees has been busy shaping the Club’s strategic direction. A new Chief Operating Officer – Sabrina Smeltz – has been hired to provide oversight to operations across the organization. Our administrative staff has been relocated offsite -- 268 Post Road in Fairfield -- enhancing its productivity while freeing up program space for the kids at both clubhouses. And outreach efforts into Bridgeport continue with the planned rebuild of the former North End Boys & Girls Club.

The Club’s enviable reputation continues to manifest itself thanks to the vigorous support of passionate donors, staff, volunteers, families, alumni and other community partners. It’s an exciting time to be around Wakeman Boys & Girls Club as we build on traditions of the first 105 years and look to continue building GREAT FUTURES for even more children from the greater community.

Every mentee, every student that I have worked with, has required me to look into myself and examine what advice and experiences I can use to help them. I could have never anticipated, as a high school freshman, that what I initially perceived to be nothing but a volunteer opportunity could become such an integral part of my life. This is what makes Wakeman so unique.

FACES OF WAKEMANBOYS & GIRLS CLUB

I moved from Ohio last year.I love the Club and being able to run around, be a kid, dance, be creative, hang with buddies from school and other schools. Junior staff are basically brothers to me, since I come here after school on the bus while my dad is working.Nathan – 3rd Grade Member

2018 Annual Report | 7

“As parents, we appreciate having a safe place for our daughter to go while we work. That’s what brought us to Wakeman. We’ve been in Connecticut for a year and a half and were looking for somewhere safe and engaging. Sometimes Asha gets upset when I arrive - she wants to hang out longer because there are so many activities and options.

The programs are great but staff are the most amazing part. They really understand young people. They know the kids by their name, what they like and don’t like. They treat kids with respect and dignity.”

“I came to the Club when I was 10 and have been hooked ever since. You can’t break bonds with places like Wakeman. The Club taught me how to communicate and showed me new possibilities. It’s brought me to where I am now, and I’m forever indebted to it.”

“Jack’s long-standing affinity and association with the club initiated, propelled and solidified our family’s involvement. Many years ago, Jack was an avid user of the club, then a high school and college staff member, and upon our return to CT, he became a volunteer coach, even before we had any children able to become members. Our kids were members, then all worked as Junior Staff.”

“I enjoyed going to the Club as a kid. Now it helps my grandson have something to be excited about each day. The Club is a place for kids to spend time safely with friends after school, whether in organized programs or just hanging out. I love that buses can bring kids from elementary schools to the Club.”
