  • Its the winning blend of friendly service andcompetitive prices that makes Layers Flooring so successful

    SS Flooring

With a huge choice offlooring options to suit alltastes and budgets, as wellas a friendly, professionalservice that has earnedthem a solid reputation, its little wonder thatLayers Flooring customers are lining up tosing the companys praises.

Happy to share their first-classexperience are David and Barbara Arnold ofDronfield Woodhouse, who chose Layers tosupply and fit new vinyl flooring in theirkitchen and dining room.

Mr and Mrs Arnold said: We first choseLayers eight years ago when they fitted ourkitchen with vinyl flooring. We initially wentto them because they are a local firm and sowe thought we would give them a try. Theywere in the Civic Centre back then and weused to pass them while out shopping.

Having been very happy with the service, when we decided to have vinyl fitted in thedining room too, we used Layers again. Thedining room used to be carpeted but now itis more easily accessible for David, who usesa wheeled walker, as it is all one level andtotally flat.

When we visited the shop to enquireabout the flooring, we felt very looked after. They got a chair for David and moved thingsaround in the shop to make it more easilyaccessible for him.

We had something quite specific in mindand were shown lots of samples. The choice

was great and they explained about thedifferent types of vinyl, helping us to reachthe right decision. After we had chosen, theysaid it could be done within two weeks and were happy to fit it at a convenient timefor us.

In the meantime, a man came round tomeasure the room and he brought samplesso we could double check we werecompletely happy with our choice.

Then when the fitter arrived a few dayslater we recognised each other as he was theone who had fitted our kitchen flooring eightyears ago. He placed plywood down in thedining room as he had done previously withthe kitchen before laying the flooring so itwas nice and smooth. The vinyl is also verythick so it looks just like real woodenfloorboards.

We were so impressed with the fittersworkmanship; he was brilliant. We still cantget our head around how he fitted theflooring as it was all in one piece but itsincredibly neat especially around theradiator pipes. He also pulled out the fridge, freezer and washer and put them back intoplace with no trouble. All in under two hours.

He was so impressed with hishandiwork he even asked us if he could takea photograph for his portfolio!

If anybody asks us where to get newflooring, we would definitely recommendLayers. And in the future when we need newcarpets well certainly be popping up there.

  • Come on inYoure sure of a warm welcome at the HydePark Inn where the atmosphere is buzzing andthe menu is full of delicious homemade food. Words: Phoebe Seymour

    SS Eating Out

It can be awkward when youre an out-of-towner visiting a local pub. Theretends to be a clique and you can feelthe unwelcome stares from the regularclientele as soon as you enter theroom. But at Hyde Park Inn in Dronfield, theres none of this.

Owners Tom and Vee have been runningthe pub for almost a year and have alreadymanaged to establish a mouth-watering menuand a warm and welcomingatmosphere.

On this particular Thursdayevening, this traditional pubwith its contemporary dcorwas full of families and groupsof friends with young childrenon high chairs and dogs undertables, creating a very relaxedand social vibe.

Theres also a fantastic range ofhomemade pub grub on their menuand specials board, as well as a dedicatedsteak menu for Meaty Mondays and a variedseafood menu for Fishy Fridays. Now is thetime to plan your Christmas party and HydePark Inn are currently advertising their festivemenu and taking bookings.

I started with the battered king prawnsaccompanied by a sweet chilli sauce, and mydining companion went with the garlicmushrooms. The batter on my prawns waslight and bubbly and surprisingly non-greasy,whilst my companions mushrooms werepresented in aromatic garlic oil with warmcrusty bread on the side.

A great test when it comes to pub food isthe classic pie, so for my main course I chosethe homemade steak and ale pie of the day.Topped with a soft crust, filled with tenderpieces of meat in a rich gravy andaccompanied by chunky chips with a small jugof thick gravy, this certainly passed with flyingcolours.

My companion went with anotherhomemade option, the chilli and rice. With a

tomato sauce and a lingering spicy aftertaste, this dish is a great way to

warm up on those cold winterevenings.

I finished off with Belgianwaffles served with coolvanilla ice cream and lashingsof warm chocolate sauce

whilst my companion had thehighly recommended

gingerbread cheesecake. With itscrunchy base, melt-in-the-mouth

cream layer and golden crunchy toppings, mydining companion was not disappointed.

After complimenting the chef, whoturned out to be Vee, her partner and co-owner Tom invited us to take part in theThursday night quiz. But, as tempting as thiswas, my companion and I were full, contentand ready for home.

If Hyde Park Inns Christmas menu is asdelicious as this one, a festive get- togetherhere may well be on the cards. Whether itson your door step or a drive away, its worthvisiting this friendly pub which is sure towarm both your stomach and your heart.

  • In a quiet corner of Woodseats, setback from the busy Chesterfield Road, there lies a diner that, despite itsdiscreet location, manages to draw incrowds from all over Sheffield. And, asmy partner Ben and I discovered on atypically bustling Friday night, Swanky Frankssecret is no real secret at all great bigplates of American food to satisfy even thehardiest appetites have been going down astorm for years.

Ben had clearly missed the memo aboutSwankys famously huge portion sizes. While Iknowingly tucked into a carb-light starter ofchicken wings just the right level of spiceand a lovely Caesar dip to dunk them in heeagerly wolfed down a great big pile of pulledpork nachos. The plate groaned with tortillachips smothered in sour cream, guacamole, cheese, salsa, jalapenos and homemade pulledpork and I wondered how he was ever goingto manage another two courses.

Oh how I laughed when, minutes into ourmains, a waiter came over to check how Benwas proceeding with his giant hot dog a12inch, 6oz pork sausage, piled high with chilliand onions and loaded into a freshly bakedbun. The reason for the waiters interest?Diners brave enough to polish off every lastmorsel of this beast are awarded a medal fortheir efforts. Needless to say, he failedspectacularly.

Over on my side of the table, my haloslipped clean off as I tucked into a calzonewith vigour all thoughts ofbeing healthylong forgotten. This traditional folded-overpizza base was fit to burst with tomato, mozzarella, pepperoni, salami, mushrooms, red onion and ham and topped with a richNapoli tomato sauce, and I enjoyed everysinful mouthful. Yes, there are healthieroptions on the menu, but who really visitsSwankys craving a salad?

Grease playedon loop in thebackground and thestereo kicked outboth old and newclassics (think DireStraits followed byKings of Leon). The scene was very much setand a Lynchburg Lemonade followed by abottle of Brooklyn lager completed our

    authentic America diner experience. Well,almost.

Ive seen enough American films (thisscreening of Grease was perhaps my 20thviewing) to know that nothing says dinerquite like an ice-cream to share served in atall glass with two long spoons, you know thedrill. Its the nearest thing to romance you

can find here and we looked every bitthe stereotype; jostling each othersspoons out of the way to scoop upmore cream/ice-cream/strawberriesthan the other.

If youre looking for a good time, abuzzing atmosphere and a greatchoice of deliciously wicked food, there are few more perfect locationsthan Swanky Franks. But if you want

to take home one of those coveted medals,Id advise you to skip lunch. And maybebreakfast, too, come to think of it.

A successful year for young dancer IsobelIsobel Elston, the daughter of Langsett Cycles Andy Elston, is a member of the DanceDaze Dance School inDronfield.

For the last four years, Isobel has danced in a crew called The Business, a group of nine girls aged between 13and 16. They have more than 160 solo/duo trophies between them after competing in many regional events.

Each year they have qualified for the World Street Dance Championships in Glasgow and have finished infourth place, despite moving up into more advanced categories. This year, they were moved up to the top under-18 advance category, which made their fourth place even more impressive. Last year, aged 13, Isobel and herclose friend Ellie-Rose Pickering also entered the World under 14 intermediate duos category and finished in firstplace. The girls had to train even harder this year in order to defend their world title in the higher under-16category. Their hard work once again paid off as they were again crowned world champions.

Join the clubTo celebrate the 40th anniversaryof the Golf GTI, Volkswagen hasproduced a stand-alone specialedition.

Dubbed the GTI Clubsport, itcomes with a different exteriordesign and some improved powerstatistics. With a more prominentfront bumper design, new side sills,a redesigned rear diffuser and amulti-part roof spoiler, theClubsport certainly stands outfrom the rest of the VW groupsrange with its very aggressiveappearance. These alterations alsoprovide meaningful downforce soit should handle crisper too.

Power from the 2.0-litreturbo unit has been increased to261hp or to 286hp on full throttleacceleration. 60mph comes in 6.0seconds for the manual car or 5.9seconds with the DSG auto box.Consumption stats are 40.9mpg(160g/km) and 42.2 mpg(155g/km) respectively

Setting the paceRevealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Jaguar F-Pace looks totake the crown from the Porsche Macan for top honours in themedium-sized luxury SUV marketplace.

Not only does it take heavy inspiration from the F-Type sportscar in terms of its pleasingly eye-catching appearance, but its interiorrivals that found in the most luxurious of SUVs, including Volvos XC-90 and BMWs X5.

It will be powered by a 178hp 2.0-litre diesel, a 296hp 3.0-litre diesel or a 375hp 3.0-litresupercharged V6 petrol unit. Models with the 2.0-litre diesel can be rear or four-wheel drive and comewith six-speed manual transmissions. The rest come with Jaguars excellent and well-proven XFautomatic transmission and all-wheel drive platforms.

Prices start from 34,170. Available to order now.

Porsche goes strictly turboThe big news is that the Porsche 911 will no longer have naturally-aspirated engines. Instead, theyll all be turbocharged. This is forefficiency reasons and one which was ultimately going to happen atsome point.

Fear not though; power has increased by around 20hp and thestraight-six scream synonymous of the high-revving naturally-aspirated engines hasnt been affected.

All 911 Carrera models now come with 3.0-litre units. The Carrera produces figures of 370hp and332 lb ft of torque. The Carrera S produces 420hp and 369lb ft. The quickest 0-62mph times are 4.2seconds and 3.9 seconds respectively.

The 911 can now achieve up to 38.2mpg on the combined cycle and emits just 169g/km of CO2. Prices start from 76,412. Launches in December.

Lamborghinis Huracan blows its topGood news for all Premiership footballers, Lamborghini has finally released a convertible versionof the Huracan itself replacing the Gallardo, the most popular model in the car makers history.

With its first public outing at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the Huracan Spyderwill be powered by the same 602hp 5.2-litre V10 engine as found in the coupe. This means a201mph top speed and a 0-62mph sprint time of 3.4 seconds.

The soft-top roof can be lowered in 17 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph. As with thecoupe, itll come with four-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Expect a starting price of around 190,000 when the car arrives in showrooms next year.

Better all-roundThe Megane is one of Renaults most popularmodels, so its big news to announce thatRenault has created an all-new model. The new Megane is 64mm longer and 25mmlower than the previous model with a 28mmlonger wheelbase. This all aids with interiorspace and the boot can now hold up to 434-litres of luggage second largest in this sector.

With a more distinctive appearance and moreluxurious interior ,including the likes of a 8.7-inch touchscreen, a seven-inch TFT instrumentdisplay and a full-colour head-up display, theMegane is more appealing than ever.

Its more economical too, with figures that cantop 85.6mpg and 86g/km of CO2. A dieselhybrid will also be introduced after the cargoes on sale next summer.

    SS Chesterfield Champions

More good investment newsarrived in Chesterfieldrecently with theannouncement that aplanning application hasbeen submitted to turn the former Co-opdepartment store into a 20million hotel, restaurants and leisure development.

I am delighted that the potential ofChesterfield has, once again, been recognisedby investors. It is large-scale developments inthe town centre such as this, coupled withour thriving independent sector, which willhelp make us a go-to destination forshoppers and tourists.

November has been designated the monthwhere we hope to do exactly the same for thetowns manufacturing sector with Made inChesterfield. The festival has two aims; toattract manufacturing and engineeringcompanies to invest in the town and createjobs, and to encourage more youngsters toconsider a career in manufacturing.

Last year, Made in Chesterfield only ranfor a week, however it was credited withintroducing more than 400 young people tocareers within the sector.

Thanks to partnerships DestinationChesterfield has fostered with schools, companies within the sector, DerbyshireEducation Business Partnership, Natwest,Chesterfield College, Derbyshire CountyCouncil, Chesterfield Borough Council,Placing Futures and Positive 4 Young People, this year more young people than ever willdiscover first-hand the employmentopportunities and the number of varied andexciting roles available within manufacturingand engineering.

Attracting young people to the sector isessential if Sheffield City Region (SCR) is toachieve its vision of developing a ModernManufacturing and Technology Growth Area.Chesterfields Enterprise Zone at MarkhamVale is already playing an important role inattracting investment to the area and eventslike Made in Chesterfield are contributingfurther in ensuring there is a readyworkforce to enable SCR to achieve thisvision.

Were also taking a similar approach tothe towns hospitality sector through theChesterfield Food and Drink Awards.Without a ready workforce for thisimportant element of the economy proposalsfor developments such as the Co-op wouldbe a non-starter.

Each year, Destination Chesterfieldpartners with Chesterfield College toshowcase the skills of the young peopleabout to enter the hospitality sector. Notonly does the College sponsor the awards, itprovides the venue for the awards but, mostimportantly, its own students cater and servethe entire event.

After the success of last years awardsevening at the College it came as no surprisethat tickets for the 2015 awards sold outweeks before the event, prompting us toincrease numbers to the absolute maximum.

Chesterfield is living up to its potential, saysPeter Swallow, Chair, Destination Chesterfield.
