Growers within the organisation Catalunia Qalitat, has reported the largest retailer on the
Spanish market, Carrefour, to the authorities. They claim that Carrefour not sell fruit and
vegetables but trash. Diminutive, not riped, skin defects, rotten etc. In other words fruits for
sale that do not under any circumstances reach the standards of the current legislation.
The same supermarket set some high standards but later they do not meet those standards
themselves with their own rules and that is what has made the growers make this radical
step. Further to that the prices offered for the fruit was on same level as perfect fruits in
other shops in the area.
On February 3rd, 4th and 5th, the Messe Berlin once again will played host to Fruit
Logistica, Europe's foremost fresh produce trade show.
For the third time, Total Produce Ireland, UK, the Netherlands and Nordic came to-
gether alongside Everfresh, Lembcke, Hortim International, Peviani, Haluco, Redbridge and
Grupo Eurobanan to exhibit under the Total Produce Group banner as well as partner
Capespan will join the stand in hall 5.2 stands 11 and 12 A.

Avocado:
Few avocado available due to continuing
rain in the Malaga area. Prices remain
steady even though Chilean hass in
smaller sizes are sold cheap.
Broccoli:
Super quality but small offer due to the
cold weather, however not to high de-
mand so there is enough produce avail-
able.
Capsicum:
Prices remain low and there are strong
competition from Israel, Egypt and Mo-
rocco on the peppers. We expect a long
period with abundant peppers and hence
low prices on all the varieties. The ex-
porters are pushing to sell the Palermo/
Capia/Ramiro which is exceeding this
year but the demand is lower than the
offer and many growers are extremely
disappointed due to the very high expec-
tations they had on these.
Cauliflower:
Very limited offer and the sizes are very
small
Celery:
Steady but with a tendency of incresing.
Quality is good
Clementines:
We believe that there are availabilities of
clementines for another 2 weeks alt-
hough there might for another extra we-
ek if the demand is not too high. Beside
that we will see what happens with the
quality of the fruit as we have experien-
ced some problems with fruits from the
Valencia region. These problems will in-
crease if the fruits have been picked right
after the rain. Ortanique is still being loa-
ded and with no quality problems and the-
re are even markets that prefer Ortanique
before the clemenules. At the end of Fe-
bruary the first Nadorcott should be avai-
lable.
Courgettes:
Quantities falling drastically due to cold
weather. Prices are going
up
Cucumbers:
The first week of January has been difficult
with large price differentials from different
exporters. Prices on auctions remain high
but not as high as expected, since the de-
mand is not very high. We have further
nice Greek cucumbers on the market so
there is a little pressure on the Spanish
from that side as well. However the latest
news are that mildew has attacked the
plants in the reigion and that the plants
are dying. The growers are very sceptical
and annonce a catastrophic harvest for
week 4 and what the remainder of the
season.
Egg plants:
Still struggling with quality issues because
of the weather. We hope they will soon be
resolved as it has been the case in previ-
ous years. Prices are rather high with no
tendency of lowering.
Iceberg:
Good quality with nice green colour. Rain
and cold weather can disturb the harvest.

Kaki:
Valencia is almost finished and in Huelva we
have for another 3 or 4 weeks.
Lemon:
Growers are inflexible with their prices and
the exporters are getting nervous since
other origins such as Turkish lemons are
receiving more acceptance and acknowl-
edgement on the European markets. There
are few fruits on the trees and there will
only be fewer as the season progress but
there is also absolutely no demand and now
after months with this situation awaiting
the demand the exporters are starting to
think that it might not come. Growers await
the demand and the importers await the
offer and since none of the two parts are
reacting the situation remain status quo.
Little gem: steady demand for this bitter
tasting salad
Oranges:
Very slow market for oranges alter christ-
mas. Few kgs of navelina available en the
fields and with quality problems. Navel and
Salustiana is of very good quality
Potatoes:
New crop from Seville will be ready the
coming week in the varieties Nicola baby,
Nicola large and Charlotte. Available in Big
bags or carton.
Rasperry: Complicated situation this week
since the volumes are limited and not even
for the limited demand there is enough be-
rries to guarantee supply.
Romaine salad:
12 pz increasing demand and the sales are
high.
Spidskål:
Nice quality with steady prices
Strawberry:
After 3 weeks of rain where most has been
sold on the domestic market the exporters
now have sufficient volumes to start the ex-
port to Europe, although the volumes are still
limited. We will avait a little to see what are
the real quantities and se how much this hea-
vy rain has destroyed of plants
Tomatoes:
Tomatoes and tomatoes on the wine of very
good quality and prices goes slightly down.
Special tomatoes have quality issues due to
heavy rain They simply drink to much and ex-
plode.
Xanadu:
Sweet mimi romaine with great
taste.
