Installing Batteries

Your product is powered by two CR-2032 lithium, 3-volt batteries. Followthese easy instructions to install orreplace them.1. Turn your product over.2. Lift the battery cover on the back

of your product by pushing up onthe catch.

3. Install the batteries with thepositive side facing up.

4. Replace the battery cover.Warning: If the batteries wear-outcompletely, or if you take more thanapproximately a minute while changingthe batteries, any information that wasentered in the built-in book or book cardexcept My Word List will be erased. Youshould always keep written copies ofyour important information.

You can view a help message at anyscreen by pressing help . Pressspace or to read. To exit help, pressclear .

Changing the Language

Message LanguageWhen you turn on this product for the first time,you must choose the message language. Pressa for English or press b for Spanish.

The message language is the language ofprompts, help, and other messages. You canchange the message language after your initialdecision. See “Changing the Settings” to learnhow.

Entry LanguageThe entry language is the language in which youenter words at the Word Entry screen. Thisdetermines which dictionary you will use,Spanish or English.

and then press enter to access theSpanish-to-English dictionary.Select at the icon menu to go to theEnglish-to-Spanish dictionary.Or you can press lang at the Word Entryscreen to switch between Spanish andEnglish.

When using this dictionary, you can activatethe Learn a Word feature, or adjust thescreen contrast, the shutoff time, the typesize, and the message language. Theshutoff time is how long your product stayson if you forget to turn it off.1. Press menu in the dictionary, calcula-

tor, or converter.

2. Use the arrow keys to highlight and press enter .

3. Settings will be highlighted. Pressenter to select it.

4. Press or to move to Learn aWord , Contrast , Shutoff , Type Size ,or Mensajes (Message language ).

5. Press or to change the setting.Your changes are automatically saved.

Your dictionary comes with a Learn aWord feature to help you increaseyour Spanish or English vocabulary.Each time you turn your SpanishProfessor on, you can see a randomheadword taken from the dictionary.

If you wish to turn this feature on,press menu . Highlight and press

enter . Press enter again to selectSettings. Press or to turn thefeature on and press enter whendone.

Changing the Settings Translating Spanish Words

Your Spanish Professor is fully bilingual.Try translating a Spanish word.

1. Press lang to change the entrylanguage from English to Spanish,if needed.

2. Type a word (e.g., estudiar ).To erase a letter, press back . To typeaccents, type the letter (e.g., e) andpress repeatedly until the accentyou want appears (e.g., é). If you wantto type an ñ, then hold f n and pressn. To type a capital, hold cap andpress a letter key. To type a number,hold f n and press q-p. To type a hy-phen, hold f n and press j.

3. Press enter to view the Englishtranslation.

Translating Spanish Words

➤ Understanding DefinitionsDictionary entries consist of head-words, parts of speech, the transla-tion, and/or definitions. Other formsof the word may follow the headword.Capitalized words indicate the cat-egory for which the word is used. Af-ter the translation or definition, youmay see a list of usage examples.1. Type saber .2. Press enter .

Translating English Words

You can also use the Spanish Professorto translate English words into Spanish.

1. Press lang to change the entrylanguage from Spanish to English,if needed.

➤ Explanation of GendersSpanish nouns are different thanEnglish nouns in that they must eitherbe masculine or feminine. Eachdefinition of a noun indicates whichgender it is with m or f.

➤ Misspelling WordsIf you enter a misspelled word, a listof corrections appears. Highlight theword you want and then press enter

to see its dictionary entry.

➤ Choosing Multiple FormsSome words in this dictionary havemore than one form (e.g. sí, si). Whenthe word you are looking up hasmultiple forms, the different formsappear in a list.

Simply highlight the form you wantand press enter to see its dictionaryentry. For example, enter si at theWord Entry screen.

Highlight the form you want and pressenter to see its dictionary entry. To go

back to the Multiple Forms list, pressback .

Using Learning Exercises

Using learning exercises, you can readcultural notes, test your spelling, improveyour vocabulary, browse the Franklin®

TOEFL® Test Word List, and get grammarguidance (see “Using the Grammar Guide”on page 13).

Another way to look up words is byhighlighting them in dictionary entries orword lists. You can then find theirdefinitions, phrases, or add them to MyWord List.1. At any text, press enter to start the

highlight.

Conjugations show inflections, orchanges in a word’s gender, tense, etc.This dictionary includes extensive inflec-tions of nouns, verb, modifiers, and otherwords.

enter .To choose English conjugation, press

. You can also press conj andthen lang to choose the language.

If needed, highlight the part of speechor translation you want and press

enter .

➤ Accenting LettersYou can look up accented wordswithout typing accents. If there are noMultiple Forms, the Spanish Profes-sor will take you directly to the word.If there are Multiple Forms, you willhave to choose the correct word froma Multiple Forms list. See “ChoosingMultiple Forms” on page 11 for moreinformation.Remember, if you want to enter anaccent yourself, type the letter andpress until the appropriate accentappears. You can also hold f n andpress n to get an ñ.

➤ Getting Grammar GuidanceWhen viewing inflections, you canpress help to go directly to theGrammar Guide and view detaileddescriptions of how to use theinflections you were viewing alongwith usage examples.

➤ Viewing English InflectionsIf you are unfamiliar with inflections, itmay be helpful to look at someinflected forms of English verbs.Switch the entry language back toEnglish, type write, and press conj tosee the different forms of the Englishverb “to write”.

This will give you a good idea of eachinflection form.

➤ Verb ConjugationsThe Spanish Professor conjugatesverbs into the following forms:present, imperfect, preterite, future,conditional, present subjunctive,imperfect subjunctive, imperfectsubjunctive 2, present perfect,pluperfect, preterite anterior, futureperfect, conditional perfect, presentperfect subjunctive, pluperfectsubjunctive, pluperfect subjunctive 2,imperative, present progressive, andpast progressive.

If you are uncertain about how to spell aword, type a question mark (?) in place ofeach unknown letter. To find prefixes,suffixes, and other parts of words, type anasterisk (✽) in a word. Each asterisk standsfor a series of letters. Note: If you type anasterisk at the beginning of a word, it maytake a little while to find the matchingwords.1. Press lang to switch to the Spanish

Word Entry screen, if needed.2. Type a word with ?s and ✽s.

To type an asterisk, hold down cap andpress ?* .

3. Press enter .

4. Press to move the highlight to theword you want and press enter toview its definition.

Finding Letters in Words

There are two ways in which you cantranslate several helpful phrases incategories ranging from Emergencies toBusiness Communication to Time &Dates.

Browsing Through Phrases1. Press menu .2. Use the arrow keys to highlight

and then press enter to viewthe English phrases.Press to view the Spanishphrases.

You can also hold f n and press ?*

to go straight to the Phrases menu inthe same language as the lookuplanguage.

3. Press or to highlight thecategory you want and press

enter .Press or to highlight a subcat-egory, if needed, and press enter .

Adding Words from the Word EntryScreenYou can also add words to My Word List di-rectly from the Word Entry screen.

1. Press clear .2. Press lang to choose the language of

the word you want to add (e.g., Span-ish).English words will be added to the EnglishList; Spanish words will be added to theSpanish List.
