Introduction for Students Thank you for downloading the 2 free adult lessons: Preliminary & lesson 4A.

The Spanish-4-You program is fun, effective and practical without information overload and will make you conversational in Spanish in record time. You will be learning a very useful language which will broaden your horizons, help you communicate at work if you deal with Spanish-speaking people, and let you enjoy your trips to Spanish speaking countries.

In our classes, either live or by Skype/Zoom, we use the immersion method. That means that we never speak a word of English. We use color illustrations, props and a lot of hand gesturing to get our message across. At first you might not understand everything the teacher says but that’s OK. Just make sure you pay attention to what it is said and repeat when you are asked to. In a few weeks you’ll understand a lot more and at the end of 4 months, you will understand practically everything that you have studied!

To achieve fluency in this important language, these Spanish lessons need to be supplemented by constant review. Our Spanish homework is short, easy and enjoyable and will definitely help you grasp important concepts. It is advisable to study and do a little homework eacy day, for at least 20 minutes. There are no translations next to the words in your book, just little illustrations. You can find the translations at the end of each lesson in the mini-flashcard section. It is suggested that you make vocabulary flashcards when you start each lesson. Once you make your cards, bring them with you everywhere so that you can review them often. It is also important that you try to speak Spanish when you are out in the real world, even if you don’t know much. Practice what you learn each week without fear.

This is the beginning of a Spanish-speaking journey which will open many doors for you. Enjoy every moment!

I credit this to your well structured program of manuals and materials but most importantly, I think, the success lies in the enthusiasm and dedication that you and your staff bring to class each week. Thanks for keeping the subject matter fresh and relevant. By tailoring the program to meet our specific busines needs you have broadened the ability of me and my associates to better reach a multi-cultural consumer base, critical to our long term success. ”

I have been able to understand more, respond more quickly, and be more involved with patients as a result. You will be challenged by the curriculum and staff, and rewarded by the results when you apply what you have learned from this program.”

Robert Morrison Counselor/Addiction Medicine Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles, CA

“I started taking Spanish classes with Laura and I am amazed with my progress. The class materials are excellent and really make learning fun. It is also a huge plus that my teachers are native Spanish speakers. The fact that Laura and her teachers will travel to your home or office is invaluable. I will definitely be continuing my classes with Spanish-4-You!”

Susan Schauer Production Producer Mark Burnett Productions Los Angeles, CA

“With Laura's help, I am now more conversational with Spanish and my husband (who had zero Spanish experience) has now picked up on basic Spanish. As a result, we are hoping to introduce our new baby to the language. Her program is great and we intend on hiring her again for the next level after we settle down into our new home.”

“My daughter is learning to speak Spanish so I decided to find a class so that I could help her learn. I haven't taken Spanish since high school so I was a little nervous and wondered if I could pick up a language as an adult. Laura is the best! First off, I love how I can stay home and take the class through Skype. And then she makes learning so easy. The exercises reinforce what you learn in the current lesson as well as in previous lessons. And I love how some classes, we just talk so I can practice speaking the language. By taking the class, I find myself reading signs in Spanish instead of English. She encourages my daughter to sit in the room while I'm learning and she has started to respond to me in Spanish (she's 5). I'm so glad I found Laura and Spanish-4-You!”

Julianne Lusain Manager At&T Los Angeles, CA

“I have been taking lessons with Laura via Skype for a little over a year now. She has helped me immensely with my Spanish. I already knew a little Spanish but after lessons with her I have become conversational in life and at work. I work as a firefighter and she is very accommodating to my busy schedule and is patient with whatever speed you learn at. Laura is very good at seeing the style in which you learn and adapts her lessons to best suit your needs.”

Casey Hoffmann Paramedic/Firefighter Pasadena Fire Department Pasadena, CA

“I'm so happy to have found Spanish-4-You with Laura. I take her classes via skype and it is so convenient and comfortable to be able to take the class from home. Laura is a great teacher! Each lesson builds on itself and she will tailor the lessons and speed to fit your needs. I started with very minimal vocabulary but within weeks Laura had me putting long sentences together and I was able to communicate my thoughts. She's very supportive and she seems to really enjoy teaching. I'm very pleased with the progress I've made so far and I'm excited to continue to learn and advance!”

Parte 1: El Alfabeto

I . VOCABULARIO Spanish is a phonetic language. That means that Spanish words are pronounced exactly the way they are written. If you know how to pronounce the vowels and some of the consonants that are a little different from English, you can pronounce almost any word well, even if you don’t know what it means.

A. Vowels The vowels in Spanish and English sound differently. These are important sounds so that you can speak Spanish correctly. These vowels will always sound the same. Listen to your teacher and then repeat.

A: “ah” E: “eh” I: “ee” O: “oh” U: “oo”

Now say: A E I O U, el burro sabe más que tú.

Translation: AEIOU, the donkey knows more than you.

B. Consonants Many consonants are pronounced the same in English and Spanish. We will only discuss the ones that might be different or that have multiple sounds. c: Has two sounds • Before a, o, u: hard ‘c’ like in can: Ex: cama cola cuerpo • Before e or i: soft ‘c’ like in ceiling: Ex: cena cine

Page 10: Spanish Workbook IA Adults lessons/Free Lesson Adults-05:17-20.pdf · The Spanish-4-You program is fun, effective and practical without information overload and will make you conversational

g: Has two sounds • Before a, o, u: hard ‘g’ like in go: Ex: gato goma gusto • Before e or i: soft ‘g’ like in hello: Ex: general gigante

h: Always silent as in honest: Ex: hola hijo hamaca

j: Pronounced like the ‘h’ in ham: Ex: jamón jefe hijo

p: Pronounced similarly like the ‘p’ in spot Always soft with no puff of air coming out Ex: papel lápiz pluma q: Can only be found before letters ue or ui makes the sound of ‘k’ as in keep but softer Ex: que quien (the u after q is always silent) r: Has two sounds • At the beginning of a word, or in the middle if followed by a consonant, it is pronounced like the ‘r’ in red but a little harder Ex: rojo rana Martes • In the middle of a word, if followed by a vowel, it is pronounced softly like the ‘r’ in Mary Ex: María toro Pérez t: Pronounced similarly like the ‘t’ in stop Always soft with no puff of air coming out Ex: total tiempo templo y: Has two sounds • At the beginning or middle of a word, makes the sound of ‘y’ as in yell Ex: yo mayo joya

• At the end of a word, makes the sound of y as in sunny Ex: muy

v: A cross between v and b. It is pronounced like a soft v, like movie

Ex: vaca vino volver

x: It is pronounced several different ways but the most important ones are: • Before a vowel, or before the letters ce or ci: like the ‘x’ in taxi Ex: éxito examen excelente • At the beginning of a word, or before a consonant: like the ‘s’ in sample Ex: xilófono Taxco

z: In Latin America, it is pronounced like the ‘s’ in sing Ex: zapato pozo ceniza

C. Other Sounds

II. GRAMÁTICA

A. Accents Some words in Spanish have a little mark (slanted line) over one vowel. That is called a written accent. It can be at the end of the word, in the middle or at the beginning. Say the accented letter a little stronger. á: mamá águila é: bebé césped í: colibrí íntegro

ó: jabón órdenes ú: Lulú útil

Don’t worry too much about accents at this point. Just remember that the accent is part of the word so when you come across a word with an accent, just see where the accent is and memorize it. B. Punctuation Signs Spanish has upside-down questions marks and exclamation points, used at the beginning of questions and exclamations. ¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás?

If the person is feminine:

Me gusta ayudar a la niña. Ayuda a la niña. Ayuda a Rosa.*

Quiero escuchar a la maestra. Escucha a la maestra. Escucha a la Señora Zayas.

If the person is masculine:

Quiero ayudar al maestro.* Me gusta ayudar al Señor Torres.* Ayuda al Señor Torres.*
