EDITOR’S WORDSI am delighted to have got this far in launching one of the UK’s most innovative Community-Interest So-cial Enterprises. I know that there is still a long way to go, but the sup-port and interest has been incred-ible. There are so many people that I have met along the way rearing to go and most importantly, with a strong committment to making BETTER COMMUNITIES.

The World Cup defeat of England and then Ghana earlier on in the year, has not shattered our dreams about Olympic Games success, in fact it should spur us all on to make sure we get on the 25 bus in/out of the Ends, with some gold medals.

HART CULTURE C.I.C, is waiting to meet the faces behind real change and a committment to growing better and safer local Communi-ties. Our new elected Prime Minis-ter - David Cameron, has sparked the conversation, but we have sparked the engine to the train to get things moving. Lets hope that you are not a Passenger on the plane, but a keen Driver of success. Chermiah Hart FdA BA

SPARK catches up with VOCAL SLENDER in Kings Cross (fresh off the boat), but also full of fresh ideas...

Vocal Slender was the eye-core candy of the Three-part observational documentary series produced by the BBC to “explore life at the sharp end of one of the most extreme urban environments in the world: Lagos, Nigeria. Today, more than half the world’s population live in cities, and this eye-opening series shows what life is really like in some of the toughest parts of the world’s fastest growing megacity”.

Interviewing His Excellency Babatunde Raji Fashola earlier in 2009 on a visit to Britain, really opened my eyes to the change that Nigerian’s are bringing to the Continent. I remember pelting him with the same old questions: “What makes you any different? Why should we support you? What would you bring new to the table? I am glad that I was proven otherwise. Fashola, went on about ‘Change

from the bottom upwards’, and how there would be a lot of disruption, as people are use to building just about anywhere they wish. The documentary shows, one of Fashola’ Henchmen breaking down a shop that has expanded far too much on to the main road. The first episode alone, uncovers life in the Olusosun rubbish dump – where we meet the bountiful Character – Vocal Slender. I even gave him a few of my favourite Reggae tracks to take back home with him – Literally. In Olusosun, around 1000 people live on top of the rubbish in houses built from scrap metal (Nothing terribly different to the Caribbean, only with amplified hygiene epidemic alert). The BBC shows the men “skilled at turning rubbish into gold”. (Eric), aka Vocal Slender, is a Musician, and every bit of scrap he finds brings him one step closer to his dream of launching his Music career. Meeting him in London, I suppose is just about every bit a realisation for him, in achieving that dream. Slender picked up an Award at the O2, Greenwich, and is also

nominated for a ‘MERIT AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN FILM & THEATRE’. There is no doubt that floods of interest (Not only from the ladies) have been flowing his way as a result of his persistence. Lagos, in the past century has relied solely on the resilience, resourcefulness and energy of Lagos’s 16 million inhabitants, and shows how successfully many of its slum dwellers are adapting to the realities of the world’s increasingly extreme urban future. However, Fashola’s vision for Nigeria as the next Mega City wants to ensure that ‘Our Children’ have a safe place to live and work for the Pride of the Motherland and birthplace of their heritage - Africa.

The cast performing at The Tabernacle – Notting Hill Gate

Looking at ‘SEVEN, was like watching Toni Morrison in her Younger days of ‘Beloved’, 1987 and ‘Tar Baby’, 1981 brilliance. The Actors - including the lead Actress, gave a vibrant and explosive performance encapsulating ‘The Struggle & deafening pain’. There was not an ounce of energy relapse on their faces, even when nothing happened amongst the other 5 or so Characters for about 10 minutes. The Play used an authentic mixture of spoken

word & Drama, as If you were listening to an acapella of Naz or Jay Z. The SEVEN cast Actors played out the Characters with utter conviction and heightened sensitivity. Every word was felt for, and the audience looked on in sheer empathy as the story unfolded. The Cast was largely American, and SPARK caught up with the Actors after the Play - backstage. surprising at how young most of them were and yet communicating such ‘Adult stories’. How did they get into such strong Narratives at this Young age? And tour all over Europe too? That is one thing about African - American’s, they put commitment, dedication and consistency into any Projects regarding their heritage/background and take great pride in the delivery. In some cases, the delivery is more important than the thing contained itself. The African-American’s ensure that all quality assurance levels are covered. Maybe in this instance – bigger, really is better.

The Production, made in Partnership with Theatre Royal Stratford East and the Barbican, is a good example of Social Enterprise and Charities, thinking outside of the box. With Music by John Adams and Lyrics by June Jordan, there seemed to be a glimmer of hope that the ‘Economic Recovery’ could be slightly fun! With the set looking like something out of a Modernist Installation (It definitely is), this is an exciting period for the Arts, to be resourceful and representative. The Production rolled, with a full Audience and rapturous applause. Matthew is a good old friend of mine, who I have known since being in Theatre Royals ‘Youth Theatre’ Program. I knew that it would be a wonder to watch. Apart from the ‘Bible throwing’, which I felt un-easy with, I was assured that it was to the effect of the ‘Hurricane’, which tears through the town. Matt, did not produce this little beauty on his ‘One’s, but worked in collaboration with a Talented cast of Actors and Actresses: Kerry Michael (Co Director), Leon Lopez, Cynthia Erivo, Jason Denton, Anna Mateo, Stewart Charlesworth, Natasha Barnes and Colin. What I love particularly reading in the list of Credits, is a specific credit to Tal Rosner video design

– Fab! and Jason Pennycooke, Movement. That is when you know that this Production team has sat down and though about ‘Diversity’. The play looks at a News Reporter, a Cop, a Minister, an Ex-Gang Leader, a Social Worker, a Lawyer, and an Illegal Immigrant in downtown Los Angeles. The Barbican beams that “The lives of seven twenty-something’s become intertwined as they strive for justice and search for love. But when a catastrophic earthquake strikes, the seven are forced to face unavoidable truths and make tough choices as their lives are changed forever and they discover that true love isn’t always found in the obvious places”. See for yourself - The Cast is littered with young rising stars from the worlds of RnB, Pop, Gospel and Music Theatre, which give authentic voice to characters who reflect the tense, Multi-Cultural reality of 1990s LA – Funny enough, not much different to the tensions that still build up around job discrimination and high ‘un-employment levels in London.

CULTURE DAMIAN MARLEY

Esther is a resilient Gal, full of life and hope. Most importantly I know that she makes sure she knows ‘how’ to get what she wants.

The new Mega City project that wants to see Nigeria as the new London is fast developing. I remember sitting in the London ‘Strategy’ Offices - London Bridge, as Governor Fashola exchanged tips with the head of London’s Infrastructure development on how to build a new infrastructure for Nigeria. Esther is one of the beach ‘Scavengers’, but fast adapting to the modern way of life and ‘moving out’, to –re-educate herself and aspire to Acting, set her Career objectives and leave her old life behind in search of one much more in tune with new beginnings. She was ‘pissed off’- she says in the BBC documentary, part 3, that people should be happy that the government is coming to ‘...Break illegal beach settlements’. However, Esther also realises, that the change has to happen!... but ‘Why so soon?

After decades of consistent neglect, the people of Lagos can see that someone – Babatunde Fashola, is trying to change things for the better. The BBC report how “a new shard of ‘Landscapers, Architects

and Contractors’, flock to the ‘Mega City’ development Project”. Most of these boys, I have already met, especially, those who came to London in 2009 - they have the same determination and purpose, to finish the job! As the BBC show them up-rooting the ‘Area boys’ along the roads (Can we give them seasonal work in London for our Anti-Social behavioural problems ahead of the 2012 Games?

Meeting Esther – The ‘Tough’ minded gal she is, reminds me of what most black women have in common in the UK – Inner strength in the face of adversity. It is no wonder only a black women could raise ‘baby Moses from a boy into a man’, sieving on the fact that he floated down one of the worlds biggest streams. Speaking to Esther in a new development West London apartment in Kings Cross, one would never guess that she lived in a dump amongst 11 million people, 1 child, with a rogue boyfriend and now wishing on a dream to become a great Journalist or Teacher. Esther, is living testimony to embracing “change from the ground upwards”, and inspiring excellence in the Arts, through local Communities.

Esther used to live on a dump in one of Nigeria’s worst ghettos. But after giving birth to a baby girl, her life embarks on a rollercoaster of emotions. Suddenly, she must take action. What is she upto next?

BOB MARLEY’S YOUNGEST SON GRACES THE UKDamian Marley turned 32, and SPARK sneeked a peak at the After Party

These boys are explo3ive – bottom line. ‘As we enter’ is a track – mostly spitting lyrics, an insane vocal mixture of Jamaican Patois (Not Jafaican) and American style old School Hip Hop, but with a fast bubbly break beat driving the track forward. It is hard to believe how far the duo have come in musical maturity, stating that it is not so long ago that Bob Marley was alive, producing hit records, rearing young children, coping with a wealth of dilemma’s that fame that fortune brings, and Damian Marley was in the background waiting to hatch with songs like ‘My Generation’ Feat Lil Wayne. Although SPARK did not get to the Tour, The Damian Marley and Naz duo seem to be igniting flames in London with ‘Distant Relatives’.

THE RACE TO THE NEW LABOURLEADERSHIPELECTION

Ed Milliband is fi ghting fi ercely to uphold his position in the race to New Labour Leadership.

Ed Milliband supports the New Young Labour lot who actively campaign for a ‘Better Britain’ – with core beliefs of equality, social justice and opportunity for all. “The Labour Party is the natural home for young people who share our vision of a fair and prosperous society”. I have personally trailed NYL and it is one of the only political parties where young people are involved in most levels of the Labour Party, from door step campaigning, through to directly infl uencing policy and providing strategic direction to the Labour Party. I have also heard Ed speak on many occasions, and the last hustings in West ham, really struck a new chord with me. Ed is young, animated, yet smart enough to know that in order to win any votes he must have a good rapport with young People. Howevr, some believe that candidates like ‘Ed’ are just ‘Continuation’ candidates of

the old Labour model that helped Britain’s biggest party loose the last general election. But, one of the things that I always fi nd amusing, is the quibbling over names during the Program order as each MP battles for his/her throne of Leadership and ultimately, possibly the bid to be the next ‘PM. The name - befuddlement usually goes something like this...”And now we introduce David Milliband”. Then Q & A time comes up – and a local Shop keeper says “So Ed! (Everyone chuckles) Ah hem, Sorry...David. Then when Ed gets in the hot seat, we think – “I’ve got it sussed”, because of course he looks like a David. So you ask with confi dence “Err, David! (People sneer in haste)...Sorry – Ed”. It seems that the Millibands don’t seem to mind, but apparently there has been some tension in the fact that Ed Milliband has chosen to run for leadership against his brother – wait for it, David. Check out places of local hustings and meetings if you are an Ed Milliband supporter: www.edmiliband.org.uk/

POLITICS DIANE ABBOTT

HUSTINGS, DIANE & CHANGE

Diane Abbot has made it clear that Labour needs a new style of ‘leadership Candidate’ to continue its message of fair and free.

From the time Diane Abbot was invited along to present to me my National Record of Achievement at the end of Secondary School (Lite years away), she has always sparked an interest in me in the view of “What is this woman doing in Politics? Although I am just coming to grips with what she has really done, other than appear on ‘This Week’ with Michael Portillo acting very very comfortable with what is supposed to be the gleaming - opposition. The phrase goes ‘Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer’, I guess she has a point there.

Abbot explains during the hustings rustle up, that she will bring a new style to politics and will not continue the old Labour

party style that doomed them in the last General Election. Abbot prizes herself of picking Hackney up from off its knees and will do the same for the British Economy, sweeping away dusty skeletons of leaders that bought into ‘Big Business’ and lost their morals. Who will win your vote in the race for New Labour Leadership? YOU can decide.

So D, Are you just Continuity[IMPOSSIBLE] of the old Labour Government or are you Progressive?...

If the answer is yes. How progressiveare you...
