From the Head of School Happy Friday, St. Mary’s is updating our student uniform! This will be a transition year: returning students will be able to wear the polos and fleeces they already own. We will introduce new items and options with various price points and encourage our students to wear St. Mary’s gear with Spartan Pride. The uniform store is now live! The new school uniform will exhibit the academic logo and consist of:

Spartan Pride

NEW EYES FOR THE NEEDY

As a special service project, St. Mary’s seniors Taylor Faieta and Christiania Castelleto will be collecting used eyeglasses, sunglasses and hearing aids during the month of August.

The donated glasses and other items will be sent to New Eyes for the Needy, a New Jersey-based, non-profit volunteer organization whose main purpose is to provide better vision to the poor in the United States and throughout the world.

Containers to drop off your items will be located at St. Mary’s High School, St. Mary’s Church and Chapel and the Parish Office at 8 South Common Street.

You may donate your used eyeglasses, reading glasses, sunglasses and hearing aids.


New Eyes provides prescription eyeglasses to the poor in the U.S. through a voucher system, which is funded by donations, grants and from the sales of donated gold, jewelry, giftware and hearing aids.

Last year, New Eyes helped 4,362 children and adults in need to see clearly. In addition, 200,000 pairs of recycled glasses were distributed through medical missions and international charitable organizations to the poor in 30 developing nations.

DON’T MISS THE BUS!

St. Mary’s would like to offer bus transportation to begin in September 2013. We feel that this would be a great option for families to get their child to school each morning. After several meetings to promote the bus program, numerous emails to our current students and new families, and announcements in the weekly Spartan Update, there are only three (3) students committed to take the proposed bus in September. In order for St. Mary’s to offer the bus as a transportation option, we will need to have ten (10) students committed to ride the bus. If you would like to sign your student up to take the bus, now is the time! Please note that a proposed pick up along Walnut Street can be added to the route to service additional students who may like to ride the bus.

athletics 2012-13 was another great year for Spartan Athletics. We won a team state title in girls hockey, an individual state title for track with Drew DiMaiti, and had two state finalists in football and softball. We also had Catholic Central League North finalists in baseball and golf, as well as having two teams with 20 or more wins: girls basketball with 21 and softball with 20. Have a safe and fun summer and we will see everyone in August for tryouts for fall sports.

The Board of Directors has set tuition for the 2013-14 academic year at $9,950 for High School and $7,350 for Marion Division. It does not include incidental fees.

Families have the option of paying tuition in one of two ways.

Option 1: Full Payment through FACTS*

The FACTS Tuition Plan is an automatic payment plan made through your checking account or savings account or credit card. There is a 2.5% processing fee if you choose to pay via credit card. Your account will be debited by FACTS on the 5th or the 20th of each month.

As part of the Digital Citizenship | School Store communication in early June, there was an announcement regarding the change in the payment process for school fees starting in the 2013–14 school year. With the school store officially closed, all school fees will be paid using the FACTS system. We are communicating with you in advance to ensure that you plan accordingly for the payment of these fees in mid-August to minimize any issues with the fee payment process.

In order to use the FACTS system, you must activate the FACTS account that was set up for you as part of the tuition payment process in mid-June. For those that have already activated your account, thank you! You have already provided FACTS with the payment account information for all payments to St. Mary’s. This information is securely stored in the FACTS system and is not accessed by anyone at St. Mary’s.

If you have not activated your account, please do so immediately. As part of the activation process you provide and authorize FACTS to charge your bank or credit card for payments to St. Mary’s. All payments will be posted to the FACTS systems, so this will be your source to track balances due to the school and payment information.

The steps for the process are as follows:

1. Fees will be loaded into the FACTS system based on your child’s or children’s grade level

2. Payments for fees will be scheduled to be withdrawn from the same account tuition payments are made from using the FACTS system

3. The target date for fee payments is August 15

4. There will be a follow-up process for any payment issues that may be subject to the FACTS payment penalty fee of $30.00 and any additional fees from your bank

Fee Definitions

There have been some questions about the communicated fee charges that are being billed and paid via the FACTS system on August 15. Below are brief descriptions for each of the fees to help you understand what they cover. All fees in the past would have been paid for by parents in the school store at the time you purchased your student’s books. There is only one new fee this year (Mobility Fee) and all other fees existed in prior years.

The fee definitions are as follows:

1. Technology Fee (was the Keyboard Fee) This fee existed last year and is to cover all the text books used in Computer Science classes (Grades 6–9).

2. Art Fee This fee existed last year is and is to contribute to the costs of supplies used in Art class (Grades 6, 7 & 10)

3. Senior Art Fee This fee existed last year is and is to contribute to the costs of supplies used by the student in Art class (Grade 12 only). There are a limited number of students taking the class, thus the reason for the higher fee.

4. Testing Fees This is the fee for the standardized testing given in late fall each year.

5. Mobility Fee This is a new fee for the software currently being installed as part of the iPad registration process at St. Mary’s. The software is used for communicating and sharing data between the school and the students via their iPad. This is the first year the fee has been assessed.

6. Science Books To cover the costs of science text books that are not in an e-book format. The fee is for four books, one for each marking period.

7. College Fair Fees charged to offset the transportation costs for juniors to attend college fairs.

8. Yearbook Cost of a yearbook for Marian Division and junior/senior yearbooks. Junior high yearbooks are given to all students, whereas the fee covers the high school yearbook for junior and senior classes.

9. Graduation Fee This fee is to cover the cost of your student’s cap and gown for the graduation ceremony as well as other costs incurred as part of the graduation ceremony.

Summer reading books can be borrowed from your local library or can be purchased in paperback editions or ordered online from booksellers such as Barnes and Noble or Amazon.

ST. MARY'S SUMMER READING FORM

As your teacher for the new school year, I can't wait to get to know you, what you think, and how you feel about

things. One way that will help me learn about you is to find out your personal reactions to what you read.

Using the heading below and the instructions and examples given, complete your double-entry response journals on

loose-leaf paper. You need to keep a journal for each book that you read this summer. You need a minimum of ten

excerpts from each book you read.

These excerpts should span the entire length of the book. They should cover the beginning, middle and end of the

book. Obviously, your personal responses should be the longest part of each entry.

These journals will be collected by the various subject teachers on the first full day of classes. These jOUrnAls

subject areas.

I chose this passage because I could definitely picture

the sloop in my mind. I could see the boat barely moving

in the water as the tide was going out. Also, I love the

author’s choice of words like loitering, this really makes

the sail seem as if it’s just hanging around, the way a flag

hangs off a flagpole when there’s no wind.

Unacceptable

when my family and I go to Cape Cod I love to sit on the

beach and watch the boats go by.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR QUOTES AND NOTES DOUBLE ENTRY JOURNAL

The left column (QUOTes) is used for excerpts from the book. The excerpt chosen does not have to be

character dialog. A text excerpt is defined as something that strikes you as important or meaningful. place this

text excerpt in quotation marks and indicate page number.

The right column is used for commenting (YOUr nOTes) on the QUOTes. personal reactions, questions, anaylsis

go here. These comments on the right may include:

• what the passage prompts you to think about

• Your feelings towards the author's words

• Questions about what was read (meaning, motivations, etc.)
