Our May Message from Kaye’s Korner
May already!? It seems just like yesterday that we were getting ready for the 2016/2017 season for our Sperry Retiree Club. Once again, I was looking on the internet for interesting facts about the month of May. Did you know that the first Saturday in May is known as National Homebrew Day? And the third Monday of May and the rest of the week is American Craft Beer Week. Now that I’ve covered the ‘beverage’ portion of May, for you foodies it’s salad month, salsa month, loaded potato month, and my favorite – chocolate custard month. Now that I’m on food…
We had 82 members and guests attend our annual picnic on the 27th. Once again, Larry and his team did an outstanding job in the cooking and prep. And as usual we had SO MUCH good food everyone was able to enjoy. Be sure to read the update on who our winners were in the 50/25/25 and gift cards drawings. Clint Langford has informed the board that he is having to step down as lead for the Fix-it Guys. Therefore, if you’re interested in joining this group of fantastic volunteers, be sure to see the article on page 9 to join them. The board is losing one of its long-term members – Fred Bauer. Fred has decided to retire – again after 19 years on the SRC board – and pursue other adventures. So, we’re looking for someone who will replace him. If you’re interested, let me or one of our other board members know. No special skills are required, only the willingness to meet once a month September thru May and plan fun outings. This issue of the Wings will be the last one until September and we know a lot of our former co-workers are either preparing to leave the ‘Valley of the Sun’ for the summer or going to stay here and enjoy the ‘dry heat’ by living in the backyard pools, spas or taking road trips to Payson, Prescott, Flagstaff or California to break up the monotony. Whatever your plans are, we hope you stay safe and see everyone in the Fall.

TRAVEL WITH BARBARA RIPPSTEIN FARTHER NORTH TO ALASKA Our group has been north to Alaska before, but this trip is different. It is offering options. You get to choose how you want to see Alaska and how many days you wish to spend on this trip. 13-Day Options Starting August 5, 2018 Princess offers two different 13-day cruise tours. You will start with 2 nights in Fairbanks, then travel by motor coach to the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge for 2 nights. There you can tour of Denali Park Tundra Wilderness watching for glimpses of Mount Denali as well as bear, moose caribou and Dall sheep. The next stop is at Mount McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge for an additional 2 nights. Relax at the Lodge hoping to catch a view of Mt. Denali, the highest peak in the United States. The Sperry Fix-it Guys are looking for a person who will take over Clint Langford’s position as coordinator
for this much called upon group of volunteers.
He is having to step down due to health reasons. Clint has been heading this up for almost 15 years and his crew has helped over 300 retirees many
times.
Therefore, if you’re interested in joining this band of volunteers, please contact Clint at (602) 803-2350 to get all of the ‘particulars’ on this position. It will be well worth your time in not only helping some of your
former co-workers but also keeping the Fix-it Guys services available for future calls.

Looking for new board members
The Sperry Retiree Club (SRC) currently has 11 Board members working to keep the Club going. As the Club gets older so do we. Several of these members have been on the board for many years. If anything was to happen to them or they resign from the Board, the Sperry Retire Club could be in jeopardy. To keep SRC from being at risk we need more Board members.
If you can spare a little time and like to work with others, please contact any one of the Board Members on page 2. What do you get for doing this? The same as us, the pleasure of knowing you are keeping a legend going.
