spf stalker

Persuasive Purpose - To remind female runners to wear SPF lip balm every day - To encourage users to develop healthy sun protection behaviors

Industrial Design

User Description

• Meet Jennifer, she is a…

• College Sophomore• Varsity runner• Light-skinned• Regular user of facebook and familiar with

social media channels• Constant checker of her phone and email• Not a regular sunscreen wearer

Prototype of spf stalker

Step 1: Post picture/ funny message on facebook

Step 3: Facebook notifies the user that they have been tagged in a photo

Step 4: User logs into facebook and sees the message!

Step 2: Tag the user in the photo

Features/Functionality

Facebook targeting• spf stalker turns photos of Jennifer into funny

messages warning of sun damage • Jennifer is automatically tagged in the image• Curiosity prompts Jennifer to log into facebook

to see the message

Theoretical Justifications

Persuasive strategies:• Curiosity- intrinsic interest to see personal photos• Personalization- attaching messages to individual

photos commits users to the cause• Promote sunscreen adaption by:

• Changing perception- skin protection is not associated with lip balm, and therefore more socially accepted

• Simple commitment- builds upon existing behavior to reduce the physical effort required

• Promote healthy habit- applying SPF lip balm can help users develop healthy sunscreen habits overall

• Easy- lip balm can be applied anywhere and anytime• Action Trigger- checking tagged photos of self becomes

a cue for the habit of applying sunscreen in the future

User Testing Design

Potential Shortcomings

Potential Shortcomings

Facebook images are a novelty that don’t translate to behavioral change

Limited to users who are familiar with facebook

Wearing SPF lip balm will not lead to sunscreen use

Personalization of facebook is difficult to scale

Design ResponseDesign Response

Facebook apps such as Causes have shown that activities on facebook can

translate to actual behavior change

Facebook demographic is rapidly expanding. Reminders also sent as

text messages

Habit creation starts with a small behavioral change

The personalization is key to the effectiveness of the message. We

target fewer users, but with greater yield

Shortcomings of Design

Page 10: spf stalker concept- draft 2

Expansion - What else is possible?

• Create your own social media campaign• Build a community

• Online avatar connected to your sunscreen use• Webcam photos documenting proof of sunscreen

use that are sent to friends• Improve scalability by automating the process

of image capture and facebook integration• Introduce analytics to determine which

facebook images have the highest yield

Next Steps in Design Process

• Rapid Prototype• Test out the proof of concept by manually tagging

facebook images• User Testing of spf stalker with our target audience

• Ask users: about their emotional response when seeing the photo; if they applied SPF lip balm when seeing the photo; if lip balm application became habitual

• Product Iteration• Identify the most effective type of facebook messages

as well as the appropriate frequency that most encourages to behavior change.

• Product Development• Incorporate user testing results to improve the response

rate of spf stalker
