Do you think about the future? I certainlydo. I think about what God is calling ourchurch to be and do in the years ahead. Wehave a wonderful seventy year history, a

promising future, committed leadership, and a powerful missionstatement: "Growing disciples of Christ by Seeking God, Sharing

Love, and Serving Others." We live this out as a church and asindividuals in so many ways, yet we should never stop thinkingabout how we can expand and grow our ministries andprograms. This past summer, in the midst of discussing the needto renovate and enhance the entrance to our preschool, theWoodmont Board decided to go ahead and commission aStrategic Planning Committee to look at future ministries as theyrelate to the needs of our entire campus. This group has nowbeen meeting for three months under the leadership of CyrilStewart who is the Chair Elect of our congregation. Cyril hasgiven decades of leadership and sacrifice to this church. As youmight expect, the conversation so far has covered a variety ofareas but the topics that seem to surface the most include the fact

that we have a very overcrowded South Hall (housing TheNashville Food Project, AA, Room In the Inn, etc.), a need toenhance the preschool entrance, the ongoing challenge ofmultiple uses for Drowota Hall, the possibility of a Chapel, andour need for more multi-purpose space. It will be hard for us tosimply maintain our current ministries in South Hall given thelimited space. The entrance to our preschool is not up to par withthe rest of our campus. Drowota Hall currently serves as aworship space for the Bridge, a fellowship hall, a gym, and avenue for many other events. A chapel in the round was a part ofWoodmonts previous master plan and many still believe itwould be nice to have. There are also discussions about futureuses of Campbell West (The Parsonage), which is where myfamily currently lives. This list is certainly not exhaustive butthese are the things that seem to come up over and over again.

The Strategic Planning Committee is actively seeking theinput of the congregation. We want feedback and ideas from themembers. Anything that we do in the future at Woodmont needsto be the will of the Woodmont membership. There is a briefelectronic survey that you are invited to fill out. To accessthis survey, you can either enter or click on the following link:http://tinyurl.com/strategicplanningsurvey . The members ofthe Committee are listed to the right so feel free to talk to orcontact any of them. In forming the committee, we intentionally

tried to find a mix of both long term members with institutionalmemory and newer members who bring a fresh perspective. We are certainly not in a hurry to get something done, butwe do acknowledge that there are needs that must beaddressed. Healthy churches are always looking to thefuture. We must be thankful for what we have accomplishedover the years but always open to new ideas andpossibilities. The words of the Apostle Paul in writing to theCorinthians hold true: "According to the grace of God given to

me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation and someoelse is building on it. Each builder must choose with care hto build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than tone that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ."(I Corinthians 3:10-11)

    Dear Woodmont,

We live in a culture that encouragesperfection. Or at least the ruse of perfection.

Thanks to Facebook, Instagram, and all the other virtual stages,we can present to the world a version of ourselves and our lives

that make others drool. We can put up pictures of our kidsbeaming with angelic smiles and perfectly tied grosgrain ribbons, our son scoring the game's winning hockey goal, dreamy,sun-tanned family vacations, and gourmet dinners that wouldmake Michelin-starred chefs envious. All things appear as pure

bliss on Facebook, courtesy of the airbrush reality we live in.

I wonder...when was the last time we considered putting up apicture of our "real" lives? You know the ones where the twoyear old is running around the house like a crazed ape, and welose our temper. Or the picture of your child's face, heart-gutted,when he didn't make the hockey team. Or how about a picture ofthat dinner you fixed starring Kraft Mac & Cheese and pizza

    pockets?

I worry about our authenticity. What do we really gain fromairbrushing away the imperfections of our lives?

Do we airbrush our faith too?

This past Sunday I wrote a communion meditation where Iconfessed that I was clumsy (I am the one who managed to sprain

both ankles within the same week and had to wear my Tretornsto the prom!). But what I was really talking about was myclumsiness in faith. I want to be a person on this planet that I can

admire. More importantly, that God can admire. But so often Imiss the mark. If I am authentic, no airbrushing, then you can'tmiss my imperfections. I struggle with pride, envy, forgiveness,

doubts, and I'm infamous for believing that I am the CEO of mlife instead of God. I want to meet the world with the noble pof my being, but I'm afraid the world gets a lesser version of t"Farrell" God created me to be. I think it's why I've always bedrawn to St. Peter. First, because he was far from saintly in t

beginning, just plain old Simon, the fisherman. But Jesus saw t

potential of his noble soul and renamed him Cephas "the RocPeter.

The Bible is not a fan of airbrushing. The Peter we find in Gospels was stubborn, self-absorbed, unfaithful, non-inclusiand he flat out denied God, not once, but three times. Peter wimperfect, clumsy in his faith and yet Jesus never stopp

believing in him. So there's hope for all of us!

Holy Rollers make me nervous. You know the ones who haall the answers and walk around as if they've already receivtheir halo. Does the title, Pharisee, come to mind? I am mumore comfortable with the likes of David, Peter, Saul, and Ma

Magdalene...real people with imperfections and fragile faiths. darn hard to meet the world with a pure heart, to think of othe

before yourself and your needs, to forgive, to keep offerup hope to the world, to be faithful to God and LOVE befanything else, and to welcome the pinch of sacrifice in our livfor God. Thankfully, God never asked for perfection, onauthenticity. Like Peter, when we stumble in faith, we get baup and try again.

To be authentic and worthy to bear God's holy image, wmust admit our imperfections and clumsiness in faith. airbrushing allowed! We are in this together! The reward is lov

    Live in Hope, Farrell

Dear Woodmontby Farrell Mason,Minister of Family Life & Pastoral Care

I am a story addict. I love a goodstory in any form. I love good fiction, good television, good movies, andgood songwriting. For me, the beststories are the ones that make me feel

like I have been inserted into thenarrative. When I start to feel like thecharacters are my friends and I just

want to keep reading or watch them succeed, that's how I knowit's a good story. This is one of the reasons I love Comic Cons, costumes and Halloween! I get the chance to see which storiesare affecting those around me; super heroes, pirates, princessesand movie characters. You can see from my picture this weekthat I dressed as one of my favorite characters, Doctor Who!

Like I said, I'm a story addict and my favorite stories of all arethe real ones. I love that I get to be part of so many people'sstories but most importantly I love to learn another person'sstory. Where did they come from? What have been their

struggles and successes? What are they passionate about? I aconvinced that if I can have enough time to learn your story ashare a little of mine with you then we can find common grouno matter what our differences!

This is why I love youth ministry! I get to learn each studenstory and we become part of each other's narrative. There ausually only a few degrees of separation between our differencand our similarities and one of my great passions is to help teeunderstand that there is always common ground. We all havstory, there is a reason we all tick the way we do and eve

person's story is worth being a part of.

As my Halloween inspiration once said:"We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?"~ Doctor Who

We have 14 amazing youth sponsors signed up to lead the youth group this year. Please join us in thanking our youthsponsors as they give their time and talents to the 6th-12thgrade youth in our church. This week, please take someextra time to celebrate and get to know Caroline McDonald.

Caroline is back home in Nashville after six years away and is excited to be a part of theyouth group.
