WELCOME TO WAMSS

Kiran NarulaPresident

Vibhushan ManchandaVice President External

The Western Australian Medical Students’ Society (WAMSS) takes great pleasure in extending to you the opportunity to join us as a WAMSS sponsor for 2015.

For over 65 years WAMSS has been the voice of student doctors in this state. Today, we comprise of 1000 of the state’s future doctors, all studying at the leading medical school at the University of Western Australia.

Our core objectives are to provide the highest standard of medical education, advocate on leading health and education issues, organise extracurricular activities and social initiatives, and finally support the welfare of our student body. We have been highly successful in each of these regards, and are regularly recognised at a domestic and international level. In 2014 WAMSS won the UWA Guild award for the Best Faculty Society, presented research on medical education in conjunction with the Faculty of Medicine at the International Association For Medical Education Conference, and received several accolades for its work in student mental health.

As a not-for-profit organisation we organise or coordinate many activities that contribute to the development of a well-rounded student doctor life. These include academic, wellbeing, sports and social events, and many social justice initiatives in the areas of public health, mental health, sexual health, and community service. Additionally, WAMSS has a well established tradition of facilitating camaraderie and passion that is unique to our cohort.

WAMSS is the peak body for medical students at the University of Western Australia. We represent the views of our members to the State and Federal Government, to media bodies, to local and federal health and education stakeholders; and to our University and Medical Faculty.

Your contribution as a WAMSS sponsor is vital for the ongoing success of our organisation. In turn, we provide the best medium for companies to engage with the doctors of tomorrow. We will facilitate direct interaction between your organisation and this select medical student group through a multitude of new and existing publications, our diverse range of events, and merchandise. Through a sponsorship arrangement, we can establish strong and beneficial relationships between your company and the next generation of medical professionals.

This prospectus outlines the sponsorship packages available to your company in 2015. Please contact either Vice President External Vibhushan Manchanda ([email protected]) or President Kiran Narula ([email protected]) to discuss any of the following sponsorship packages, which may be tailored to best suit your organisation’s needs.

On behalf of the medical students of Western Australia, thank you for your involvement and we look forward to your partnership with WAMSS in 2015.

ACADEMIC EVENTSDuring the year, WAMSS holds a variety of academic events, designed to cover material that is vital in the training of medical students to become holistic junior doctors. The Academic Events Package has undergone significant changes for 2015 and we are excited for what the year will bring, notably with the inaugral WAMSS Carnival to be held in June.

Student Grand Rounds (SGR)This initiative involves senior medical students volunteering their time and knowledge by tutoring junior medical students in a practical setting. The program has gone from strength to strength following its inception 5 years ago, and in 2014 the sessions were each filled with between 50 to 65 students. The popularity and success of this program has attracted attention from the Faculty and clinicians in recent years; with clinical teaching being important in order to maintain the high quality of the medical workforce in WA.

Mock OSCE (Observed Structured Clinical Examination) SessionsThe OSCEs form the foundation of medical students’ examinations in clinical years and involve 7-10 minute sessions with both real and simulated patients in a supervised examination environment. These practice OSCE sessions have proven incredibly popular with medical students and are run by doctors, professors and senior medical students.

University Grand Round Series and Workshop SeriesFor the first time in 2015, we will be initiating a six-part University Grand Round Series of lectures, debates and multimedia presentations on controversial issues in medicine. We estimate that each of these will be attended by 80 students, and intend to bring in clinicians and experts to offer their insight. The Workshop Series will have three parts, and will aim to address some of the practical skills that students often report they feel under-skilled in, such as ECG interpretation. We anticipate that these events will each be attended by between 50-100 students, with varied year-group representation depending on the specific event.

WAMSS CarnivalThis whole-day event will include the selection of representatives for various competitions at the Australian Medical Students’ Association National Convention, to be held in July in Melbourne. We will be running competitions to pick our best debaters, our “Brainiest Medical Student” and our team for the Emergency Medical Challenge (EMC), which is always hotly contested! There will also be entertainment and activities throughout the day to maximise participation from all students, as well as food, live music and a social event to follow.

Academic Events Sponsorship Packages are detailed on the following page.

ACADEMIC EVENTSLeadership Development Workshop

The Leadership Development Workshop is an intensive whole day program, run in concert with the Medical Students’ Association of Notre Dame (MSAND), which aims to promote and develop a range of skills essential for a leader within the medical community and in a broader context.

This program is important in fostering the next generation of medical leaders and advocates. It helps equip students with abilities, knowledge and networks required to navigate complex health and political issues which they will face in the future. The students who attend this workshop are highly motivated and proactively engaged with political organisations involved in student life.

As this event is run in collaboration with our peers from the University of Notre Dame during the first half of the year, please contact our Vice President External Vibhushan Manchanda at [email protected] if you are interested in being involved as a sponsor.

MEDICAL DINNERThe Medical Dinner is without a doubt the highlight of the WAMSS social calendar, being the largest and most highly anticipated event run by WAMSS. After a wonderful evening in 2014, the black-tie event will be held at HBF Stadium and we anticipate attendance of over 800 guests. The formal occasion provides an opportunity to recognise the work and commitment of all WAMSS members and also to celebrate the achievements of our colleagues, including faculty members. Furthermore, the evening is designed as a farewell and tribute to the pre-intern cohort of medical students. The WAMSS Medical Dinner is truly a night of enjoyment, celebration and fellowship.

If you are interested in being involved in this fantastic evening or would like more information please contact the Medical Dinner Representatives at [email protected] or Vice President External Vibhushan Manchanda at [email protected].

INTERHEALTH (GLOBAL HEALTH)Interhealth is WAMSS’ global health subsidiary that seeks to educate, inspire and empower students towards practical solutions to health inequalities in the global community created by corruption, racism, war and poverty on a local and an international level.

The path towards global health equality is an exciting, growing movement among Australian medical students and as such it attracts some of WAMSS’ most motivated, engaged and globally aware students, as well as other UWA students. Individual projects will often gain exposure via print and online media far beyond the medical or student community, and address issues such as HIV/AIDS, refugee health, maternal and child health, climate change, overseas volunteering and medical electives, and the provision of medical supplies to resource poor areas.

Interhealth is now also partially integrated into the new postgraduate MD course. Through this integration, student involvement in Interhealth and global health projects also contributes to student assessment portfolios. This has resulted in large numbers of students eager to participate; in 2014 we estimate that 45% of the students interacting with Interhealth were first year students. This proportion will increase as the incoming cohort of MD students begin their portfolio assessments. More importantly however, Interhealth provides an opportune moment for personal growth, with students gaining much leadership experience and a passion for global health that will be continued for life. The Interhealth calendar spans the entire year and includes in excess of 30 events with fantastic exposure to medical students of varied interests and progress in their medical education.

For further information on any of the Interhealth projects or packages, please contact the Interhealth Co-Chairs at [email protected], or Vice President External Vibhushan Manchanda at [email protected] .

INTERHEALTH (GLOBAL HEALTH)Global Health Short Course (GHSC)The Global Health Short Course is a mini-lecture series run over five weeks that attracts a wide audience of over 700 people including medical students, pre-medical students and general community members. They gather to hear from inspirational speakers who are experts in their own fields, with topics ranging from Indigenous health and refugee law to the issues of access to essential medicines. Workshops accompanied the lecture series in 2014 and were extremely popular. Attendance at at least four out of five sessions was acknowledged by a certificate signed by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. In 2015 throughout August and September, the Global Health Short Course will again aim to educate the community and to provoke thought and discussion on contemporary issues challenging our society. Electives & Exchanges NightThe Electives & Exchanges Night is an educational event aimed primarily at fifth year medical students planning their elective placements. It showcases the electives undertaken by previous students, with the aim of informing and inspiring students to embark on unique medical experiences in Australia and overseas. In 2015, students will also have an opportunity to undertake further pre-departure training to prepare them for the challenges their elective will bring, including working in a culturally and linguistically diverse environment, the psychological burden of electives and the ethics of healthcare provision in an under-resourced setting.

ZONTA Birthing KitsOver two evenings, medical and pre-medical students gather to assemble simple, but life-saving birthing kits that are distributed to under-resourced regions through Asia, Africa and the Pacific Region. The birthing kits help to provide a clean and safe birth, ultimately reducing maternal and infant infection, injury and death. Additionally, students will hear from senior medical students and health professionals who have worked in maternal health in resource poor areas, before furthering their obstetrics skills in hands-on workshop stations.

Crossing Borders For Health (CB4H)Crossing Borders for Health is a national network of students passionate about removing barriers to health care for refugees and asylum seekers. The current political environment and recent events in Australia have seen a reinvigorated passion for this issue, especially amongst medical students. Sponsorship of CB4H would see funds go directly towards facilitating the workshops and to continue the work that students have already achieved.

Teddy Bear HospitalThis is a program whereby primarily pre-clinical medical students visit primary schools to alleviate children’s anxiety towards doctors, and promote health lifestyle messages through a simulated visit to the doctor; children bring in their “sick” teddy bears to the medical students who play the role of the teddy doctor to familiarise children with the process of visiting a doctor in real life as they would with their parents.

INTERHEALTH (GLOBAL HEALTH)Local and International Needs Contribution Scheme (LINCS) Package $300(or equipment donations)

The Local and International Needs Contribution Scheme (LINCS) is a not-for-profit organisation run by Interhealth. Their primary aim is to minimise the barriers to healthcare by providing medical equipment and supplies to poorly resourced hospitals and health settings internationally. Sixth year medical students are required to complete an elective, with many choosing to travel internationally and to poorly developed nations, providing the perfect opportunity for transportation and distribution of equipment. Students also have the opportunity to apply for monetary grants from LINCS, which enables them to assess the needs of the healthcare service on arrival and purchase the necessary supplies locally. Other medical students completing electives and exchanges may also apply to LINCS. Sponsorship packages may be in monetary form or direct donation of equipment and supplies.

The LINCS Package allows fori. Acknowledgement and logo in any LINCS publication; inclusive of advertisements and, most

notably, the annual LINCS 2015 calendarii. Opportunity to attend LINCS functions and display promotional banneriii. Through association to the Hackett Foundation of UWA, LINCS is a registered charity and

deductible gift recipient (DGR); therefore, it is able to receive income tax deductible gifts and donations

SPORTSThe WAMSS Sports portfolio returns in 2015 with a mix of exciting new events and old favourites. Sporting events offer opportunities for teamwork and bonding between the MBBS, MD and Guaranteed Pathway medical students. Students are able to unwind and enjoy some physical activity away from lecture theatres, libraries and hospital wards.

The 2015 program includes a variety of individual and team events, both interyear and intervarsity. The annual dragon boats competition marks the start of the Interyear Sports Competition where each year level will compete in events including netball, soccer and table tennis; each vying to become the victorious year group. In addition to the interyear competition we run two intervarsity sports days, combining with Curtin and Notre Dame universities.

WAMSS sport events provide an opportunity for all members to come together and participate in a relaxed, social environment. Competitors are encouraged to stay for all games and socialize; a large number of events incorporate sundowners and barbeques giving potential sponsors a great opportunity to interact with students.

ORIENTATION EVENTS2015 is the second year of the Doctor of Medicine degree at UWA, introducing a fresh cohort of medical students, with new and exciting events to familiarise them with WAMSS. We have a packed schedule to welcome the new students to WAMSS, the first and biggest of which will be Med Camp, followed by a barbecue and a cocktail night to set the stage for what will be a challenging yet rewarding year, both academically and socially. These events within the first three weeks of the degree offer sponsors the opportunity to associate with future doctors from the outset of their medical careers.

Med Camp is always a highlight that students cherish forever and will take place over the 7th and 8th of February. Over the two days, over 120 new medical students will gather for a weekend full of education about what lies ahead of them and networking with their future classmates and colleagues.

Starting a new degree with 239 strangers who will become your future colleagues can be daunting at best. WAMSS Orientation events aim to smooth the transition into the demanding MD course and facilitate making long-lasting, life-long friendships. We have undoubtedly the earliest contact with the new cohort and provide excellent opportunities for early sponsor exposure.

Orientation Events Premier Package $4000i. Exclusive naming rights to all educational activities held at the campii. Recognition of Orientation Events Sponsor throughout campaigniii. UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIESOutlined below are some of the programs or projects we run for which we will be seeking sponsorship later in the year. Please contact the Vice President External Vibhushan Manchanda at [email protected] for more information or to express your interest in being involved.

Associate Member ProgramThe Associate Member Program is coordinated by the Undergraduate Communications Officer (UCO) for those interested in becoming medical students, that allows members to engage with each other socially and through academic-focussed events, both within the associate member program and WAMSS activities as a whole.

Students Passionate About Mental Health (SPAMH)Students Passionate About Mental Health is the leading student mental health body within Western Australia. Founded in 2011, it is dedicated to raising awareness about the link between mental health, general health and wellbeing. This year SPAMH will seeks to recharge the local focus on student health and has a significant calendar of events planned, especially featured around Mental Health Week in October.

Red PartyRed Party is a student-run initiative with two main aims; to raise funds for Oxfam Australia’s Integrated HIV & AIDS Program in South Africa, and to raise awareness of HIV & AIDS related issues. We do this through a year long campaign with many events, culminating in the Red Party, attended by over 1000 people. This is the largest and arguably most successful entirely student-run charity in Western Australia, and following our example in 2007, over 15 MedSocs around Australia now run their own Red Party campaigns.

Allied HealthAllied Health is one of the highlights of the student social calendar in Western Australia, as we attract over 2000 party-goers from different universities and courses to join us at Metro City on the 2nd of April. Opportunities will arise to be involved with this massive exposure shortly.
