America is, and will alwaysbe, the land of dreams andopportunity. The differ-ences in people lie within

their desires to act on those dreams andembrace their inner entrepreneurial spir-it. Keith Carpenter is one of those dream-ers who coupled desire and opportunity

with a great idea hence, the BedSlidewas born.Carpenter began his business ven-

ture in 1999 in a backyard shop withtwo friends he lured into the business. His quest was this: to find an easy wayto access cargo from the back of hisrestored 1972 Chevrolet pick-up withouthaving to crawl in after it. The result: theBedSlide a pick-up bed cargo access

platform.Things took off quickly with the three

partners each accepting a major respon-sibility. Founder, Carpenter, led the visionas President of IFW BedSlide, SteveRobinson served as production manag-er, and Dan Marshall handled market-ing. When the dust settled, BedSlide hadfound a niche in the aftermarket industryand catapulted to a new level of success.

Carpenter and his partners had founda virtually untapped market and pick-up owners were thrilled! Today, manycompanies offer copy-cat versions of thiscargo access platform, but the BedSlidesunique mounting patents clearly raisethem to the top of the heap industryleaders, if you will.

So, what is it that distinguishes theBedSlide from the other brands? Whatmakes the BedSlide so appealing to pick-up and utility van owners? The followingfeatures are found ONLY on the BedSlide:

The BedSlide mounts in most vehi-cles in less than 15 minutes BedSlides exclusive mounting patent.

The BedSlide is COMPLETELYremovable in about two minutes, leaving the pick-ups flexibility anoption.

Fully extended, the BedSlide willhold up to 1000 lbs on the Avalance/ Cadillac EXT and up to 1800 lbs onall other models.

Build by hand with heavy gaugesteel, BedSlide touts the highestquality and most durable compo-nents available.

    Available in five model options,the BedSlide offers whatever gradebest suits the owners needs:S t a n d a r d , We a t h e r D e c k , o rContractor Grade.

All BedSlides come with a five-year,no nonsense warranty.

The BedSlide is a product that simply

adds ease and convenience to your life. Its easy to operate simply twist thelocking handle and glide your cargo to

you. This process is designed to makecargo easily accessible, but an addedbenefit is that cargo is also safer to lifttherefore it results in less injuries fromhandling/lifting cargo.

Over the years, Carpenter bought outhis early partners, and David McInturf isnow onboard as Vice President of Salesand Marketing. The BedSlide is avail-able through a network of national andregional distributors in the United States,Canada, the UK, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia with more countries com-ing soon. The distribution amounts tosome 5000 dealers throughout these coun-tries. For more information, please visitwww.bedslide.com. SG

The Birth of Supertanks, LLCLike customers at his auto dealerships,

Woody started to grow increasingly frus-trated by this lack of fuel capacity and

limited range. For those towing trailersor traveling long distances, this meantfrequent stops and buying fuel from theclosest and oft-times high-dollar stations. In 2003, when Woody couldnt find a suit-able after-market tank, he decided tomake one himself, and Supertanks wasborn.

Searching for the Ideal Fuel TankFrom the start, Woody wanted a light-

weight tank that would fit perfectly and,at the least, double the vehicles fuel range without taking up valuable cargo space

in the bed or interfering with hitches oraccessories, and without detracting fromthe vehicles beauty. The first TITANFuel Tanks were made of standard LinearPolyethylene similar to the original equip-ment tanks they would replace. Despitethe fact that these early tanks were dif-ficult to install and required a high degreeof expertise as well as vehicle modifica-tions (cutting and welding), customerscame from far and wide to buy them.

The TITAN Tank Double FuelCapacity and Superior ImpactResistance

Two years later, when a chemical engi-neer suggested High-Density Cross-LinkedPolyethylene (XLHDPE), Woody had hissolution. A space-age material that bondson the molecular level, XLHDPE is chem-ical resistant and extremely durable. Itmade the TITAN Tank nearly indestruc-tible, doubled fuel capacity, and extended

vehicle range. It also made TITAN's 5- year limited warranty possible.

New Gen 5 TanksIn 2007, TITAN introduced its Gen 5

    Tanks with design modifications greatly

easing installation and improving long-term performance. The lightweighttank (about 45 lbs. without hardware)can be easily maneuvered so a drive-way mechanic can install it in 2-4 hours, depending on expertise.

Larger Capacity TanksIn 2008, TITAN expanded to a state-of-

the-art facility, investing extensively in precision tooling and taking advantage of another opportunity to improve productdesign. This led to TITANs latest Super

Series line, which includes larger capac-ity tanks and further design innovations.

Q: How much more range will I get

with a TITAN Fuel Tank? A: A TITAN Fuel Tank will just about

double the range of most popular crewcab applications. For example, the stocktank on a GM Crew Cab Short Bed truckis 26 gallons; the TITAN replacement tankis 52 gallons. A Ford Crew Cab Long Bedcomes with a 34 gallon tank; the replace-ment TITAN Fuel Tank holds 67 gallons. For extended cab and other applications,

you can expect at least a 65% to 90%increase in capacity and correspondingrange.

Q: Will my fuel gauge be accurate?

A: Yes. Your analog fuel gauge willwork the same with the TITAN Fuel Tankas it did with your original stock equip-ment tank.

Q: Will my Driver Information Center(DIC) computer work the same?

A: No. The DIC computer will not beaccurate.

Q: Is there a way to fix the DIC com- puter?

A: Some independent companies arecoming out with ways to reprogram thecomputer and match it to the larger tank.EFI Live (www.efilive.com) can repro-gram most GM products.

Q: Can I install a TITAN Fuel Tank onmy gasoline-powered truck?

A: No. TITAN Fuel Tanks are only fordiesel-fueled vehicles.

Q: How much does the tank weigh? A: The short-bed tank models weigh an

average of 45 pounds (without the brack-et hardware). This means more capacitywith less weight and easier installation.

Q: How difficult is installation? A: Weve made every effort to make

installation as simple as possible. TheTITAN Fuel Tank fits in place of youroriginal tank. We include all the necessary

parts and detailed instructions. Generallyspeaking, installation entails removingthe stock tank, moving the sending unitto the new TITAN Tank, reattaching thefuel lines, and bolting in the new tank.Your TITAN dealer can help you withinstallation.

Q: How long does installation take? A: Between 2-4 hours depending on

your expertise. Weve seen TITAN FuelTanks installed in 45 minutes.

Q: Is the TITAN Fuel Tank as durableas the original stock equipment tank?

A: More durable and better warrantied. Most stock (or original equipment) tanksare relatively thin and made of materi-als like Linear Polyethylene. TITAN Fuel

Tanks are made of High-Density Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLHDPE), whichis bonded molecularly. Also, the nominalthickness of all TITAN Tanks is of aninch. TITAN Fuel Tanks are so tough thatthey are backed by a 5-year, or 50,000-miles, limited warranty.

Q: Does the TITAN Fuel Tank hangdown lower than the stock tank?

A: For most applications the TITANhangs about 1 to 2 inches lower thanthe stock tank. Usually the difference isnegligible.

Q: Do I need the TITAN Shield?

A: The TITAN Shield, made of XLHDPE, is incredibly tough. It fits overthe bottom of the tank, providing theunderside with a rock shield. We recom-mend it for owners who go off-road.

Q: How quickly could you ship a TITANFuel Tank to me?

A: If you dont have a local TITANdealer and there are hundreds of deal-ers across the country a tank could beshipped directly to you, FedEx Ground orFreight. If you dont have a local dealer,to order a TITAN Fuel Tank call (800)728-4982.

Q: What is the returned goods policy? A: No returned merchandise will be

accepted without prior written consentof the management of TITAN Fuel Tanks.

Any merchandise which may be returnedas a result of a warranty issue shall not besubject to this policy but shall be handledas per TITANs published warranty policy.

Any merchandise that is not returnedunder the provisions of the warranty poli-cy shall be subject to the following:

Restocking charge, equal to 20% of the purchase price.

Customer returning merchandise willbe responsible for pre-paid freight to

a location specified by TITAN.Any item which has been installed

or had fuel introduced into it cannotbe returned.

Merchandise condition must be pris-tine. Merchandise cost will not becred-ited back to customer until mer-chandise is returned to and inspectedby TITAN Fuel Tanks. If the condi-tion of the merchandise is not suffi-cient, no credit will be granted. SG

S ubaru is revving up per-formance and handling inits iconic All-Wheel DriveImpreza WRX model for2009. Performance is boost-

ed to a new level in the 2009 WRX thanksto a 265 horsepower turbocharged inter-cooled Boxer engine, retuned suspensionand wider, lower-profile summer perfor-mance tires. WRX enthusiasts will quicklyidentify the 2009 models by the STI-typegrille and standard Aero Package. The2009 Impreza WRX is available with a 5-speed manual transmission only.

The goal of the 2009 WRX teamwas termed Kyo-Ka (translated from

Japanese as strengthening). To achievethis goal, Subaru engineers thoroughlyrevamped the performance character of the WRX for 2009. A larger turbochargerincreases boost to 13.3 psi from 11.4 psiin the 2008 model, and a new larger-diam-eter exhaust uses a low-density catalystfor reduced backpressure. As a result, the2009 WRX engine produces 265 horse-

power at 6,000 rpm and 244 lb.-ft. of peaktorque at 4,000 rpm significant increas-es from the 224 horsepower and 226 lb.-ft. in the 2008 version. Fuel economy is

an EPA-estimated 18 mpg city / 25 mpghighway, compared to 19/24 for the 2008WRX model.

The Impreza WRX debuted an all-new platform for the 2008 model year, featur-ing a longer 103.1-inch wheelbase and anall-new double-wishbone rear suspensionsystem. Revised suspension tuning for2009 further bolsters WRXs street per-formance credentials. The standard 17 x7-inch aluminum alloy wheels now wear225/45R17 summer performance tires, compared with 205/50R17 all-season tires

used on the 2008 WRX. Vehicle DynamicsControl (VDC), a stability and tractioncontrol system, is standard on all Imprezamodels for 2009.

    Suspension Re-Tuned for SharperHandling

Subaru significantly re-tuned thesuspension on the 2009 WRX, result-ing in sharper turn-in and more respon-sive handling overall. Front upper strutmounts are adopted from the STI. Thefront spring rate is 43-percent stiffer, andthe rear spring rate is 42-percent stiffer.Diameter of the stabilizer bars is alsoincreased, from 20 mm to 21 mm in frontand from 15 mm to 16 mm in the rear.Suspension damping was also re-tuned.Because the wider tires used on the 2009,a new damper valve was also added tothe steering gearbox to ensure a smoothand high quality steering feeling.

Placing the engine slightly lower in thechassis than in the previous-generationImpreza models helped lower the centerof gravity in the new Impreza platform, enhancing steering response. With theSubaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept(DC3), Subaru optimized all elements of

the Imprezas chassis to deliver a betterbalance of handling response, ride qual-ity, quietness and overall traction per-formance than offered by competitive

    vehicles.

New WRX Aero Body StylingOn both 2009 WRX Sedan and 5-Door

models, a new STI-type grille carries theWRX badge. Both models get a sharp-ened new look from the standard AeroPackage, which was formerly part of theoptional WRX Premium Package. Both

body styles also feature front and rearunder-bumper spoilers and aerodynamicside ground effects. The sedan has a low-

profile rear trunk spoiler, while the 5-Door adopts the Impreza WRX STI rearspoiler and a rear diffuser. The rear gar-nish panel between the light clusters isbody color on the 5-Door and chrome onthe sedan.

Other distinctions between the twomodels continue as before, includingclear rear tail lamp lenses for the 5-Doorand red lenses on the sedan. The 4-Doorfeatures dual tailpipe outlets, while the 5-Door uses a single, larger outlet (stainlesssteel on Premium Package).

Rally-Inspired InteriorThe WRX interior introduced new com-

fort and spaciousness for 2008, and for2009 it gains new WRX-exclusive carbonblack checkered upholstery accented byred stitching. The standard tilt and tele-scoping leather-wrapped steering wheelis accented by red stitching and standardaluminum-alloy pedal covers now includethe drivers footrest.

Performance-design front seats inte-grate the backrest and head restraint into

a single structure. The sporty instrument panel features electroluminescent gaugeswith indicator needles that sweep thegauge faces upon engine startup. Theoptional WRX Premium Package gainsa power moonroof; other contents carryover, including the 10-speaker audioupgrade with auxiliary input jack, projec-tor-beam fog lights, dual-mode heatedfront seats, heated exterior mirrors and awindshield wiper de-icer.

The compact layout of the double-wishbone configuration helps to minimize

intrusion into the cargo area, providing awider and deeper luggage compartment. On the 5-Door WRX, the wide and flatload floor can accommodate two Tour-size golf bags with the rear seat backs inthe upright position. In the WRX sedan, which is 4.5-inches longer than the previ-

ous-generation Impreza sedan and 6.5-inches longer than the new 5-Door mod-els, the extra space provides for a larger, deeper trunk that can accommodate threeTour-size golf bags. In all WRX models, a60/40-split folding rear seat further boostscargo capacity and convenience.

    Symmetrical All-Wheel DriveStandard Symmetrical All-Wheel

Drive, which forms the common coretechnology on all Subaru models, givesthe Impreza WRX a significant handling

    performance advantage over front-wheel

drive competitors. Symmetrical All-WheelDrive is a complete system comprised of the Boxer engine and the full-time powerdistribution system (which varies bymodel and transmission). The aluminumBoxer engine and simple, symmetricaldrivetrain layout help to lower the carscenter of gravity, which in turn contrib-utes to its handling characteristics.

The 2009 Impreza WRX employs a vis-cous coupling locking center differentialthat distributes torque 50:50 front:rear.Should slippage occur, this system trans-fers more power to the wheels with thebest traction.

    Advanced Yet Easy-To-UseTechnology

The available navigation and informa-tion center in Impreza WRX is the focal

point of the center console. The naviga-tion screen is located at the top of thedashboard for improved visibility andease of use. With the navigation system, the center console provides an input forMP3 players as well as RCA-type video

jacks that can accommodate portablegaming devices. These can be displayedon the navigation screen when the vehi-

cle is parked.Impreza models come pre-wired for

XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio. Boththe standard and optional Impreza audiosystems feature the Radio BroadcastData System (RBDS) that can display a

variety of information, including a songstitle and artist. The standard WRX audiosystem features an AM/FM stereo withsingle-disc CD player and four speakers.

The WRX Premium Package adds an AM/FM stereo with 6-disc in-dash CDchanger featuring MP3/WMA file capabili-

ty. Occupants enjoy powerful sound from10 upgraded speakers (six in the frontdoors, four in the rear doors) and SRSCircle Surround Sound. Also with this

package, the steering wheel adds audiosystem switches. An auxiliary audio input

jack enables connection of an iPod or

MP3 player. The optional Satellite Radio and

Navigation package for the WRX inte-grates the Audyssey MultEQ audio

enhancement. Used in high-end hometheater systems, Audyssey MultEQ cre-ates the optimal sound experience for

passengers in each seat position by tun-ing equalization that corrects for timeand frequency response. The naviga-tion system itself presents major func-

tions through an intuitive, easy-to-usetouch screen interface. This option alsoincludes Bluetooth hands-free wirelesscapability (requires accessory kit). SG

C ombining the seri-ous performance of an elite sports carwith the poise of aluxury sedan, the2009 CTS-V is Cadillacs ultimate expres-sion of performance and luxury.

Part of Cadillacs acclaimed V-Seriesof high-performance models, the CTS-

V delivers 556 horsepower (415 kW) at6,100 rpm making it the most powerful

production Cadillac ever and one of theworlds fastest and most capable sedans.

More than just power, CTS-V alsoincludes a comprehensive suite of tech-nical and design enhancements. Theseinclude Magnetic Ride Control, super-capable Brembo brakes and the additionof a new automatic transmission with

    paddle-shift control.The CTS-V represents the full exten-

sion of our design, technology and per-formance capabilities, said Jim Taylor,Cadillac general manager. The V-Seriestakes the award-winning CTS sport sedanand elevates it to a position within the

club of the worlds most exclusive andcapable cars. The Vs development team tirelessly

fine-tuned the car on some of the worldsmost demanding and legendary environ-ments. Germanys famed Nrburgring, and roads and tracks throughout theUnited States and Europe, were the prov-ing grounds.

The 2009 CTS-V extends Cadillacsacclaimed design language, both insideand out. Several key technical and designelements combine to transform thealready highly capable CTS into the new

    V-Series.

    New 6.2L Supercharged V-8 EngineThe all-new LSA 6.2L supercharged V-

8 engine is, perhaps, the most dramaticexample of the Vs world-class comport-ment. Rated at 556 horsepower (415 kW)and 551 lb.-ft. of torque (747 Nm), theCTS-Vs new LSA engine is the most pow-erful ever offered in Cadillacs nearly 106-

year history. The LSA engine is based on GMs leg-

endary small-block V-8 architecture andfeatures an intercooled supercharger sys-

tem, premium aluminum-alloy cylinderheads and numerous details designed toensure it makes its power as quietly andsmoothly as possible. The supercharger, for example, has a new, four-lobe rotordesign that enhances quietness while alsooptimizing the performance parametersof the engine.

Complementing the LSAs tremendousoutput is a combination of componentsand design elements designed to ensurea quiet, refined driving experience.Examples include:Balanced, lightweight reciprocatingassemblyHypereutectic pistonsLower-lift, low-overlap camshaftCenter-feed fuel systemAcoustic engine coverPiston oil spray cooling

Transmissions A pair of six-speed transmissions is

    offered with the LSA: a new, TremecTR6060 six-speed manual with a dual-discclutch; and a Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed

automatic with paddle-shift control thefirst automatic offered in the CTS-V. Eachtransmission is designed to channel theengines tremendous power while simul-taneously delivering exceptional refine-ment and smoothness.

The new TR6060 transmission is basedon the proven T56 six-speed used in the

previous CTS-V, but upgraded to handlethe LSA engines substantial increase intorque, as well as improve shift quality,

via a dual-disc clutch system. The twin-disc clutch delivers exceptional clamping

power and excellent shift effort, achievedwith the use of a pair of smaller-diameterclutch discs that have less inertia thana single, larger-diameter disc. Like the

previous CTS-V, a dual-mass flywheel isused, which allows for smooth, rattle-free

    performance.GMs Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed

automatic transmission features steer-ing-wheel- and console shifter-activatedtap up/tap down gear control, as wellas driver-selectable modes that deliverdifferent performance characteristics(i.e. shift points, shift firmness 0, for dif-ferent driving conditions. Performance

Algorithm Shifting is part of the 6L90scontroller programming and provides a

performance-oriented shift pattern duringsustained high-performance driving, suchas at a racetrack.

Magnetic Ride ControlThe 2009 Cadillac CTS-V features the

worlds fastest-reacting suspension tech-nology, Magnetic Ride Control (MRC). Ituses shocks controlled by advanced mag-neto-rheological technology, rather thanmechanical valves, greatly acceleratingresponse time and precision. Electronicsensors at all four wheels literally readthe road every millisecond, making con-stant adjustments to damping to create

virtually instantaneous and extremely precise control of body motions. This isof particular benefit for a high-perfor-mance sedan, helping to keep the car

very composed during hard cornering, acceleration, braking and other dynamicmaneuvers.

The Magnetic Ride shocks also enablea much broader range of damping control

to optimize the ride and handling for alldriving conditions. In the CTS-V, Cadillac provides an extra measure of control, asMagnetic Ride has two selectable modes(Tour and Sport), enabling the driver totailor the suspension for grand touring ormore spirited performance driving.

Elite Levels of PerformanceThe combination of advanced technol-

ogy and extensive testing behind the CTS- V results in elite levels of performance, yet also remarkable poise on the road. The CTS-V accelerates from 0-60 mph inless than 4 seconds performance that iscommon to only a select few supercars,

placing CTS-V in select company as oneof the worlds highest-performing sedans.

Unlike most supercars, though, CTS- V provides a luxury driving experienceacross a range of conditions. Whethergrand touring over winding roads, oreven in daily driving conditions, CTS-Vis poised. The car retains the inherentcharacteristics of the CTS itself, includ-ing well-tuned quietness and road man-ners. SG

T he 2009 Chevrolet SilveradoHybrid is a powerful full-size pickup that achieves 40-per-cent greater city fuel econ-omy and a 25-percent improvement inoverall fuel economy while delivering thecapability expected of a full-size truck including a 6,100-pound (2,767 kg) tow-ing capacity.

Partnering General Motors patentedtwo-mode hybrid system and a powerful6.0L gas V-8, the Silverado Hybrid deliv-ers highly efficient performance, includ-ing all-electric driving up to 30 mph (48km/h). That allows fuel savings to be real-ized even when the truck is fully loadedor towing a trailer.

EPA-estimated fuel economy for 2WDmodels is 21 mpg in the city and 22 onthe highway; 4WD models are estimat-ed at 20 mpg in both city and highwaydriving. That mileage, combined with theSilverado Hybrids 26-gallon (98 L) fueltank, delivers a cruising range of morethan 500 miles with 2WD models andmore than 470 miles with 4WD models.

The Silverado Hybrids combinationof efficiency and capability make it a no-compromises truck for customers whowork and play hard, but want greater fueleconomy, said Ed Peper, Chevrolet gen-eral manager.

The Silverado Hybrid goes on sale inthe first quarter of 2009. It is offered inthe crew cab body style on both 2WD and4WD models. Each model is equippedwith several standard, popular features,

including StabiliTrak electronic stabilitycontrol system, a locking rear axle anda trailering package. Silverado Hybridalso offers dual-stage frontal air bags andhead curtain side air bags, and it is theonly full-size truck with five-star side-impact ratings in federal crash tests.

Hybrid DetailsThe Silverado Hybrids fuel-saving per-

formance is derived from GMs advancedElectrically Variable Transmission (EVT)and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride EnergyStorage System (ESS), which work inconcert with the standard 6.0L V-8 gaso-line engine with Active Fuel Management(AFM) and late intake valve closing(LIVC) technology. GMs hybrid technol-ogy system not only enables the Silveradoto launch and drive up to 30 mph on elec-tricity alone, it also allows the Vortec 6.0L

V-8 engine to operate in its more econom-ical V-4 mode for longer periods.

As part of the vehicles emission con-trol system, the ESS is warranted foreight years/100,000 miles.

With GMs two-mode hybrid system, the electric power used to propel the

vehicle is generated by the hybrid systemitself. When the brakes are applied or the

vehicle is coasting, the electric motorswithin the hybrid system create electric-ity that is stored in the 300-volt battery. This stored energy is used to move the

vehicle and the regenerative brakingcycle is renewed.

    The two-mode hybrid system provides

seamless, dependable power on demandin an efficient package. In fact, its electricmotor is less than half the size of those insingle-mode hybrid systems. This tech-nology was developed and is still usedin fleets of hybrid transit buses in morethan 70 North American and Europeancities. Scaled-down for use in passenger

vehicles, the two-mode system deliversfuel savings where it is needed most inlarge vehicles with high levels of capa-bility. The two-mode system was firstintroduced on the 2008 Tahoe Hybrid. Itis a core part of GMs energy diversityefforts, which are centered on reducingdependence on petroleum, improving fueleconomy, reducing emissions and mini-mizing the automobiles impact on theenvironment.

With the fuel savings of the hybrid sys-tem and Silverados 26-gallon (98-liter)fuel tank, the Silverado Hybrid has acruising range of more than 500 miles(800 km).

Quiet and SmoothIntegration of the hybrid system on

the Silverado is seamless the battery pack is located beneath the rear seat and delivers a quiet driving experience.Contributors to this include:

New exhaust system and resonatortuned for the 6.0L engines Active FuelManagement operation.

Additional engine intake inductiontuning for reduced interior noise and

Electrically driven 42-volt variable-assist power steering reduces vibration

and provides up to a 0.5-mpg fuel econ-omy improvement by reducing parasiticlosses common in belt-driven hydraulicsystems.

Energy Storage System (ESS) coolingsystem internal fan is tuned to be quiet atlow vehicle speeds when the fan couldmore easily be heard by the occupants.

Along with quietness, the SilveradoHybrid also delivers exceptional driv-ing smoothness, thanks to specificallytuned shocks and a new hydraulic bodymount. Located on the passenger side of the chassis, the hydraulic mount providesa dramatic improvement in highway driv-ing smoothness, particularly on rough orchoppy road surfaces.

Trailering PerformanceIn addition to increased fuel economy,

the Silverado Hybrids electrically vari-able transmission also provides tremen-dous trailering capability, enhancing driv-

ing smoothness and quality when towing.Towing capacity is 6,100 pounds (2,767kg) with 2WD models and 5900 pounds(2,676 kg) with 4WD models.

Electric drive is enabled up to approxi-mately 30 mph (48 km/h), even when tow-ing, allowing fuel savings when the truckis towing a trailer.

    The EVT incorporates grade braking

and tap up/tap down shift control. It alsobenefits towing on curves or lower-speedback roads, as exceptionally smooth geartransitions eliminate the shift shocktorque disruption that can occur duringabrupt shifts, such as when slowing orbraking.

The Cadillac Escalade Hybridis the worlds first fuel-savinghybrid applied to a large lux-ury SUV, delivering a 50-per-

cent fuel economy improvement in citydriving. It is powered by GMs innovative,fuel-saving two-mode hybrid system andoffers the same dramatic design, luxuryand full-size capability that have madethe Escalade an icon.

Escalade Hybrid is available in 2WDand 4WD configurations. It delivers upto 5,800 pounds (2,631 kg) of usable tow-ing capacity on 2WD models and 5,600

pounds (2,540 kg) on 4WD models.Nearly all of Escalades standard comfortand convenience features are included asstandard equipment on the hybrid model, including an eight-inch, touch-screen nav-igation system that displays performancereadouts of the two-mode hybrid systemon the screen.

Escalade Hybrid extends Cadillacsleadership in the large luxury SUV cat-egory, particularly in the area of technol-ogy.

    Patented Two-Mode HybridTechnology

    The Escalades two-mode hybrid sys-

tem allows it to return exceptional fueleconomy in both city and highway whiledelivering the capabilities of a true luxurySUV. In city driving, this advanced hybrid

power system enables Escalade to launchand drive low speeds on electricity alone.

As additional power is demanded, thesystem blends output from the batteryand gas engine smoothly.

GMs patented two-mode hybrid sys-tem consists of an advanced electrically

variable transmission (EVT) and 300-voltnickel-metal hydride Energy StorageSystem (ESS). These systems work inconcert with the standard 6.0L V-8 Gen IVgasoline engine with Active FuelManagement (AFM) andlate-intake valve closing(LIVC) technology. AFMenables the V-8 engine toseamlessly shut off half of its cylinders whenless power is needed, such as during highwaycruising. This new hybridsystem not only enablesthe Escalade Hybrid todrive low speeds on electricity

alone, it also allows the 6.0L V-8 engine tooperate in its more economical four-cylin-der mode for longer periods.

The key to Escalades two-mode hybridsystem is that the electric power usedto propel the vehicle is generated by thehybrid system itself. When the brakesare applied or the vehicle is coasting, theelectric motors within the hybrid systemcreate electricity that is stored in the 300-

volt battery. This stored energy is usedto move the vehicle and the regenerativebraking cycle is renewed.

the second-row seat, where it takes up virtually no additional space and doesnot interfere with second- or third-rowingress/egress.

The primary function of the ESS is to provide power (300 volts) to the EVTand to store captured energy producedduring regenerative braking. In additionto supplying power to the EVT, the ESSalso provides power to the air condition-ing compressor and the Accessory PowerModule (APM), which converts the high-

voltage supply to 42 volts for the electric power steering system, and 12 volts forthe vehicle battery and other 12-volt elec-trical accessories.

Battery pack durability and reliabilityare maintained via optimized charge anddischarge cycles, as well as a dedicatedcooling system that draws air from the

passenger compartment. As part of the vehicles emission control system, the

ESS is warranted for eight years/100,000miles.

Regenerative BrakingThe Escalade Hybrid features fully

blended regenerative braking to captureenergy that would otherwise be lost dur-ing vehicle deceleration. By using oneor both of the EVTs traction motors asa generator, braking energy is convertedto electrical energy and stored in the ESSfor future use to propel the vehicle.

The regenerative brakes are used alongwith the standard hydraulic brakes to

slow the vehicle and/or bring it to a stop.Depending on the amount of brakingforce required, the hydraulic brakes maynot even be used, such as during milddeceleration when slowing to allow spacefor merging traffic near a highway on-ramp.

Regenerative braking has the addition-al benefit of extending the life of the fric-tion materials used in the hydraulic brak-ing system, as well as improving braking

performance in the form of shorter stop- ping distances.

Cadillacs Smooth and Quiet Power Acoustic details specific to the Hybrid

model ensure it delivers the superior lux-ury that has been an Escalade hallmarksince its inception. The details include:

A new exhaust system and resonatorspecially tuned for the 6.0L LIVC engines

Active Fuel Management operation. Itensures comfortable interior acousticsand a pleasant exhaust note during both

An electrically driven, 42-volt vari-able-assist power steering reduces vibra-tion and provides up to a 0.5-mpg fueleconomy improvement by reducing

parasitic losses common in belt-drivenhydraulic systems

The Energy Storage System coolingsystems internal fan is tuned to be quietat low vehicle speeds, when the fan couldmore easily be heard by the occupants

    6.0L V-8 EngineThe Escalade Hybrids 6 .0L V-8

engine is unique. It features Active FuelManagement and late intake valve clos-ing (Atkinson-cycle combustion process)for reduced pumping losses and betteroverall fuel economy. It uses flat-top pis-tons, cylinder heads borrowed from GMs5.3L high-output V-8 and a 10.8:1 com-

pression ratio, producing 332 horsepower(248 kW) at 5,100 rpm and 367 lb.-ft. of torque (498 Nm) at 4,100 rpm. It runs onregular unleaded fuel. A unique 3.42 rearaxle ratio is used with this powertraincombination to help deliver the outstand-ing acceleration that is a hallmark of theEscalades performance.

A key contributor to the EscaladeHybrids fuel economy is the gasolineengines Auto Stop mode. Once the vehi-cle reaches 0 mph, the gasoline engineis automatically shut down. By leavingthe engine off and allowing the vehicleto move only under electric power, suchas during heavy stop-and-go traffic, fuelconsumption and emissions are greatlyreduced.

However, when extra power isrequired, such as for wide-open-throttleacceleration from a standing stop, the

Vortec 6.0L V-8 is seamlessly restartedso it can deliver the necessary powerand torque. In this case, the engine isrestarted effortlessly from the Auto Stopmode using the EVTs powerful internalelectric motors; there is no traditionalstarter motor.

Escalade AestheticThe Escalade Hybrid retains the quali-

ties that have made it the leading largeluxury SUV and a standard-bearer of Cadillacs overall product renaissance. Itis instantly identifiable as a Cadillac andincorporates styling cues from the land-mark Sixteen concept vehicle, including a

detailed signature grille, front fender vent ports and layers of chrome accents.

The Escalades warm and inviting inte-rior features a premium layout. It is avail-able in two colors, Ebony and Cashmere.Standard features include a distinctiveinstrument panel; gauges with white nee-dles and blue light inlays with continu-ously lit, white-LED backlighting; Nuanceleather-covered seats; leather-covereddoor trim and center console; and a

Driving for Best EconomyBy using the analog economy gauge

found in the instrument cluster, driverscan maintain the most efficient drivingstyle by keeping the gauge at its optimumeconomy indication as often as possible.

Also, any time the gasoline engine is shutdown indicated when the tachometer

needle points to the Auto Stop position, just below the zero mark the driverwill know when the vehicle is being pow-ered only by electricity, which is the mostefficient propulsion method.

Powertrain DetailsDrawing on its vast experience in

developing hybrid bus propulsion sys-tems, GM designed the EVT to providethe best combination of city and highwayfuel economy. Used in concert with the

    Vortec 6.0L V-8 engine with Active FuelManagement, this all-purpose system iswell-suited to provide excellent econo-my and full-size SUV passenger-carrying,cargo-hauling and trailer-towing capabili-ties.

Furthermore, the EVT is designed tobolt directly to the standard four-wheel-drive transfer case found on the gaso-line-only models for true four-wheel-drivecapability. The following major compo-nents comprise the Tahoe Hybrids unique

    powertrain system:Electrically Variable Transmission(EVT)

Energy Storage System (ESS)Vortec 6.0L V-8 with Active Fuel

cle systems, and then determines themost efficient means of propelling the

vehicle either via electric power, gaso-line engine power or a combination of thetwo. The EVT is like having two trans-missions in one continuously variabledrive for light-load conditions and fixed-ratio drive for high-load situations.

In Mode One (M1), the EVT providesinfinitely variable drive up to 1.70:1, whileMode Two (M2) provides ratios from1.70:1 to 0.50:1. These two modes includeall instances of electric-only (Auto Stop)and electric-gasoline hybrid operation.Depending on driving conditions and

vehicle load, a fixed first-gear (G1) ratioof 3.69:1 is available (such as for pullinga large trailer) instead of the variable M1ratios.

Similarly, a second-gear (G2) fixedratio of 1.70:1 may be selected by theHOS, if needed, before transitioning tothe variable M2 ratios. As road speedincreases, and depending on driving and

vehicle load conditions, variable-ratio M2operation can be switched instantly to athird-gear (G3) fixed ratio of 1.00:1, andfinally to a fourth-gear (G4) fixed ratio of 0.73:1, which is used mainly for steady-state highway cruising.

Unlike less advanced hybrid systems, the GM system occasionally shuts downthe electric motors, allowing the EVTto function as a conventional automatictransmission. Typically, this fixed-ratiooperation occurs at highway speeds orwhen hauling heavy loads, and can actu-

ally be more efficient than operating inelectric-gasoline hybrid mode under thesame conditions. This is because underhigh-load situations, when the fixed gearsare in use, the electric motors can beused to generate electricity or, if need-ed, they can be called on to supply addi-tional torque for improved performance.

    E n e rg y s to r a g e sy s t e m ( E SS) :Providing power to the EVTs two electricmotors is a 300-volt nickel-metal hydrideEnergy Storage System (ESS). This bat-tery pack is located under the second-row seat, where it takes up virtually no

additional space and does not interferewith second- or third-row ingress/egress the fold-and-tumble capability of thesecond-row seat is maintained, and whenthe seat is flipped forward, a flat loadfloor is provided from the liftgate forwardto the front seats.

The primary function of the ESS is to provide power (300 volts) to the EVT via the Traction Power Inverter Module(TPIM) and to store captured energy pro-duced during regenerative braking. TheESS can also be charged, when neces-

sary, by the gasoline engine via one of the two electric motors when operated ingenerator mode.

In addition to supplying power to theEVT, the ESS also provides power tothe air conditioning compressor and the

Accessory Power Module (APM), whichconverts the high-voltage supply to 42

volts for the electric power steering sys-

tem, and 12 volts for the vehicle batteryand other 12-volt electrical accessories.Battery pack durability and reliability

are maintained via optimized charge anddischarge cycles, as well as a dedicatedcooling system that draws air from the

passenger compartment. As part of the vehicles emission control system, theESS is warranted for eight years/100,000miles.

Vortec 6.0L V-8 engine: The Vortec 6.0L V-8 gasoline engine is used in the TahoeHybrid because of its favorable torque

Quality is not widely seen intodays consumer market. Withcompanies scrambling to save abuck here and skimp on content

there, it is surprising to find a companyin our own backyard, built not on profitmargins, but on quality.

River Raider Off Road started from

humble beginnings when a fellow Jeepenthusiast, like you and I, was in searchfor Jeep parts. Disappointed with partsthat didnt fit or hold up on the trail,Kenny Hauk began fabricating his own

parts in his garage. After a few proto-types, the designs began to take form.Welding and fabricating was one thing, but what about the finish? Powder coat-ing seemed to be the predominant option

for most manufacturers; however, Haukwas not impressed with its high cost andlow durability. The answer? A local spray-in bed liner shop applied a two-part poly-urethane-based coating called GatorHyde.Durable, washable, paintableit seemedlike a perfect fit!

It was not long before Kennys Jeepin

buddies were hitting him up for some parts for their own rigs. Fast forwardtwo years, River Raider Off Road buildsa complete line of hard-core off road Jeep

parts. River Raider has perfected their parts and their GatorHyde finish, which isnow sprayed in-house.

Since we wanted a fine-textured coat-ing for our parts instead of a rough bedliner finish, we fine-tuned our spray sys-

tem to provide a finish that is far moredurable than powder coat, yet easy toclean, states Hauk.

Their product line, starting with off road snorkel systems, has now expandedto offer a wide range of off road partsfor the new JK. We decided to try outtheir JK Tube Fenders. The results? River

Raider Off Road has effectively solvedevery gripe that we have regarding theOEM JK flares, with a functional, stylishalternative.

The new JK, endowed with very dif-ferent lines than that of previous Jeeps, makes it much more challenging to designa steel tube fender that fits well, looksgood, and also follows these new con-tours. Kenny and his team studied the JK

and hit a homerun with their design. RiverRaider offers front and rear flares, wheresome of the competitors only offer fronts.

The first generation tube flares wereonly available in full OEM width, but short-ly after JKers begged for a narrow version,River Raider began to offer the flares inboth narrow and wide flavors. They alsogive you a choice of finishes, including acolor-match GatorHyde option.

We ordered a set of the full-width flareswith the black GatorHyde finish. Fourdays later the Brown Santa showed up.

The packaging was neat and professional. Theflares were beautiful! Quality welds, excellent workmanship, andan impressive finish. The stainless steel hardware was completeand the instruction sheet was very easy to understand. I promptly

grabbed a front flare and held it up to the Jeep. I couldnt believehow well it fit into place! The lines on the flare fit perfectly intothe recessed flare pockets of the JK. I was even more amazed to

see that every hole in the flares back-ing plate lined up with the holes in the

Jeeps body. The fit of the rears wasequally impressive. These fenders lookawesome and they are tough enough tostand on. The additional tire clearanceobtained is equivalent to 3 of lift.

The wide flares provide the sameamount of coverage as the factoryflares, making it easy to stay legal if

your state requires it. We really likedthe coverage of the wide flares, butdecided to pursue a more aggressivelook with additional obstacle clear-ance. So, after another call to Kennyand a few days of waiting, we installeda set of the narrow flares on my Jeep, while my original set of factory widthsteel fenders found a new home on mybuddys Jeep.

Since all of the holes were alreadydrilled, the new narrow set bolted upin about an hour. These can also be

color-matched or purchased with thefinish of your choice. In addition totube fenders, River Raider also pro-duces rear crusher corners for the JK.These super strong corners are madefrom 3/16th steel that work in con-

junction with the ORO LiteDOT LEDTaillights.

They also offer front and rear bum- pers, rock sliders, skid plates, alu-minum snorkel systems, hi-lift jackmounts, hood vents, and various other

Jeep accessories. River Raider Off Road not only designs and fabricates

these high-quality products for your Jeep, but they have great business eth-ics and provide unparalleled customerservice. SG

Larger tires offer increased traction for off-roadingadventures, which seem to suit Jeep owners.Drawbacks are that they are more expensive andhave more highway noise, but aside from those two

factors, larger tires seem to be the best option, especiallymud terrain patterns.

Also, be aware of the increased strain placed on yourbraking system caused by the mounting of heavier tires.Youll need to consider upgrading your braking system tocompensate for the extra pounds.

Lastly, carefully consider the tire pattern that you choose. While the mud terrain pattern is a fairly standard option, keepin mind the highway noise youll be getting. It may not bother

Charter Company Helps Disabled Angler Get on the WaterThe 2009 salmon fishing season is look-ing to be a banner year in the NorthCoast of BC, and there are always greatopportunities to catch massive Pacifichalibut in the local waters.

This year, Blackfeather FishingCharters is excited to offer fishing oppor-tunities to anglers that experience limited

The new Boston Whaler255 Conquest that Blackfeather FishingCharters has purchased is 27 feet longand nearly nine feet wide, and includes arear walk-through transom door.

vents him from standing for long peri-ods of time. As she looked at the vessel, she realized that the rear transom doorwould provide excellent access on andoff of the boat, while the two rear facingseats in the Conquest cockpit are perfect
