The New Northwest Passage A Voyage to the Front Lineof Climate ChangeCameron Dueck
IN the summer oF 2009 Cameron Dueck and the rest of the crew of the Silent Sound completed a journey made by fewer people than have climbed mt. everest; they
sailed through the infamous Northwest Passage. These waters are normally locked in ice, but due to climate change it is now possible to sail here for a few short weeks each summer.
Their voyage from Victoria to halifax carried them through raging storms and mechanical breakdowns and took them into sea ice that threatened to crush their hull. But more importantly it brought them face to face with modern Arctic life in tiny, isolated Inuit communites where the challenge of climate change is added to the already crushing load of social and economic woes.
each person they met along the way added their story to this colourful tale of life in the Arctic; a unique place where the climate change experience is affected by the critical and ongoing debates over sovereignty, resources and cultural assimilation.
ABout the Author:cameron Dueck’s journalism career has spanned the globe, from north america to europe and asia, with regular escapes to sea to satisfy his passion for offshore ocean sailing. Born and raised in Manitoba, cameron is currently an assistant news editor at the Financial Times in Hong Kong, where he spends his weekends sailing.

tales froM the Back rooM
Emerging from the back rooms, ultimate insider Michael Decter treats us to a range of raunchy and riveting stories of politics in Canada.
From his youth stuffing envelopes for the NDP in Winnipeg to his days as Ontario premier Bob Rae’s senior mandarin, Michael Decter has helped shape policy in several governments. He has also met with the great, the not so great, and the downright bad. His stories of encounters with Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Brian Mulroney, Bill Clinton, and a host of others are by turns hilarious and thought-provoking.
If you’ve ever wondered what went on in the smoke-filled rooms where nation-changing decisions of the 1980s and 90s were taking place, this is the book for you.
aBouT THE auTHor

Without Fear or Favour sums up 33 years of in-your-face policing on the mean streets of Winnipeg. Former police inspector Jack Tinsley depicts Winnipeg’s finest as characters and comedians, as well as dedicated
officers who try to “make it right” instead of just playing by the book. This controversial memoir brings out the black humour of police officers,
who often see people at their worst. It also touches on the darker moments in cops’ lives.
Without Fear or Favour is a gritty, ribald, and riveting read. And it’s all true.
Jack Tinsley joined the Winnipeg Police Department six days after graduating from high school and retired with the rank of Inspector after thirty-three years. He and his wife Theresa reside on an acreage in rural Manitoba.

message From The editor
hArVest is complete, and I couldn’t be more pleased. This year’s crop has a whole lot of heart.
Cape Town, by Brenda hammond, is about a young Afrikaner woman’s first love, also love of country during the turbulent time in south Africa’s history which saw the end days of apartheid. hammond was born on south Africa’s Gold Coast, and though she now resides in ottawa, her heart is clearly very much with the land of her youth. Cape Town is sweeping and engaging. readers will immerse themselves in story while educators will also appreciate the historical aspects. At the end, all will look up, sigh with deep satisfaction, and say, dankie.
In Nelsa roberto’s second novel for teens, The Break, she examines the complex nature of family relationships as her main character, Abby, battles royal against her strong-willed surgeon mother. over spring break, mom is away—again—and Abby is left to take care of her grandmother, Nonna, the woman she feels truly raised her. Nonna is in early stages of Alzheimer’s, something Abby is having great difficulty accepting. teens facing the reality of aging loved ones in their own lives will greatly appreciate Abby’s journey, also her struggle in balancing differing expectations of family and friends.
In How to Tend a Grave, by Jocelyn shipley, Liam has just lost his prostitute mother to a hit and run driver. he moves to small town ontario to live with his grandfather, a man he’s never known. There he meets an intriguing girl who has also suffered a loss— that of her unborn child. readers come to know both through alternating points of view, each startling and honest. This story is about love of boy and girl, family and self. more than anything it is about finding a way through.
The Green-Eyed Queen of Suicide City by award-winning author Kevin Fournier is also told through alternating characters. one, a teen girl named Natalie, recounts the Winnipeg winter that saw the birth of her baby sister, but also the loss of a friend to suicide. The second perspective is from rose, the girl who chose to walk into the winter night, lay down and die. When rose wakes in “suicide City” she is determined to find her sister, also dead by her own hand. This beautiful, direct, imaginative, pull-no-punches story is an exploration of love of family beyond traditional boundaries. It does not glorify suicide—though readers will root for the dead sisters on their terrible journey—but creates an opening for thoughtful discussion about this difficult and eternally disturbing topic.
This year Great Plains teen Fiction offers four unique stories about love, family, boundaries and choice. I couldn’t be more proud of these amazing authors and the stories they have sown.

The BreakNelsa robertoWatching Nonna 24/7 wouldn’t be such a big deal. We could do lots of stuff together. I just had to keep her busy.
ABBY LAmBert’s PLANs to ski with friends over spring break are ruined when her surgeon mother and stepfather announce they have to leave the country
on an emergency medical mission. Instead of partying with her friends, Abby must stay home and look after her increasingly confused grandmother.
At the nursing home where Nonna likes to play bingo, Abby runs into her notoriously aloof classmate Kyle who volunteers there. Despite his arrogance and mysterious past she finds herself drawn to him. maybe staying home for spring break won’t be so bad – except for Nonna’s weird behaviour, which seems to be escalating. Abby manages things pretty well ... until one terrifying and desperate night, where life as she knows it changes forever.
From the author of Illegally Blonde comes another heart-warming story of family relationships, regret, and redemption. The Break will stay with you long after you’ve read it–like the love between Abby and her Nonna.
ABout the Author:nelsa roberto was born in a remote logging community in northern ontario, grew up in a farming community in southern ontario, and now lives in toronto with her husband, three children, and a Golden retriever.

The Green-eyed Queen of suicide CityKevin marc Fournier
Their parents moved away soon after Rose’s body was found. Because let’s face it, if one of your daughters commits suicide, everyone feels sorry for you, but if both your kids off themselves, it starts to look like you’re pretty useless.
BethANY, A BeAutIFuL and popular teen, hangs herself the night before halloween. her devoted sister rose follows her into a frozen death, and into a city
where trees bleed along the banks of a river of blood. meanwhile, Addy is visiting from montreal, determined that Natalie’s mother will give birth to her baby while she is there.
Consider a baby born in a snowstorm, one girl who never sleeps and another who craves blood, ghostly footprints and dangling corpses, New Year’s fireworks and an unexpected kiss, all tied to a legendary queen who lives in the hidden center of suicide City.
“We’re dead,” he said. “It’s what you wanted, isn’t it? It’s what we all thought we wanted.”
From award-winning author Kevin marc Fournier comes a tender, disgusting and extraordinary story of loneliness and confusion, loyalty, love, friendship and death. But also, life.
ABout the Author:Kevin Marc fournier was born and raised in Winnipeg. His first book, Sandbag Shuffle, won the Mcnally robinson Book for Young people award in 2008.

how to tend a GraveJocelyn shipleyHe always figured he might be thirty or something before he could even talk to a girl. Before he met the right one. One who could make him forget that his mom had sex for money.
LIAm’s mom hAs been killed in a hit-and-run, forcing him to live with a grandfather he’s never known in a small town with a big youth crime problem. At the cemetery
he meets and falls for harmony, a gorgeous but mysterious girl who records the names of all the babies buried there long ago. harmony is afraid that Liam will join the local gang of vandals and ruin his life. As a result of her painful history with the gang leader her best friend dumped her and she was shunned at school. In her journal she writes to the unplanned baby she recently miscarried, and examines her growing feelings for Liam. But as she says, “he’s a grieving teen and I’m a loony nutbar. Cape townBrenda hammond"Together we can build a bright future… be a nation not divided by colour, but joined in co-operation for the good of all.” He raised his fist in the air and shouted, “Amandla!"
IN 1989, south Africa is on the brink of dramatic change. oblivious and unaffected, renee Pretorius, daughter of strict Afrikaans parents, leaves her beloved
Karoo farm in order to pursue her dream to study ballet at the university of Cape town.
Plunged into the turmoil of life in a city gripped by the struggle for freedom, renee begins to understand the horrific impact of the apartheid system, and the racial prejudices she never questioned while growing up. When renee falls in love with a student activist, she’s forced to make the most heart-wrenching choice of her life.
Cape town tells of renee’s journey of awakening in strife-torn south Africa’s mother city in the year before mandela’s release. It conveys the atmosphere and climate—both political and social—of an extraordinary era.
ABout the Author:Brenda Hammond left her birthplace on the Gold reef in south africa to study dance at the royal Ballet school in london. she currently lives in ottawa where she can be found biking around her neighborhood, or at the airport, on her way to visit far-flung friends and family.
