Sisters grow through academics

Sisterhood programming at Delta Phi Epsilon is an outlet for sisters to leave College Park and bond through enjoyable activities. Activities of the past have included apple and pumpkin picking and ice-skating.

This semester, senior Andrea Fisher took over the sisterhood programming chair position and has set new standards for what sisterhood programming means in our chapter.

Fisher, along with the vice

president of academic affairs, Ricki Spak, decided to use sisterhood programming to enhance scholarship, one of the five founding values of Delta Phi Epsilon. Spak and Fisher organized the 123-person chapter into groups, according to major or field of study, with one or two freshman and at least three upperclassmen of the same field.

“The idea of this program is to help freshman and sophomores with any questions that they may have about their field (cont on page 2)

(cont. from page 1) Diamond, and Delta Phi Epsilon’s Jordana Zwer-ling, a member of Terp Thon’s exec-utive board, rallied the team. They posted fliers, drafted letters to send to family and friends, and sent fre-

quent emails with inspirational sto-ries of children with cancer. Although the Delta Phi Epsilon and Sigma Nu team was neck in neck with the Alpha Epsilon Phi and Alpha Epsilon Pi team throughout

(cont from page 1) of study,” Spak said.

The upperclassmen revealed to freshman and sophomores the best and worst classes and professors, how to handle the workload and study tips. They also gave advice on how to prepare for interviews and internships, and how to attain an internship in the particular field.

Freshman and sophomores in the School of Letters and Sciences were able to meet with multiple groups of majors, allowing these women to ask questions and listen to conversation that may help them choose a major.

Senior Kaitlyn Kerr loved

this event. “I wish this had been a program when I was a freshman, I would have really benefitted from the help the seniors gave today,” Kerr said.

The entire chapter had a positive response to this program, understanding that because scholarship is one of the five core values, sisters should be open and willing to help younger sisters on the same path.

“It was great to see the freshman and seniors bond over similar interests,” said Fisher. “The seniors were passionate about helping the

freshman and sophomores succeed and, in the process, helping our chapter succeed.”

the fundraising process, and on the day of Terp Thon, they succeeded in the end. “I’m so proud of our sisters and the brothers of Sigma Nu for accom-plishing the most fundraising we have ever done and for supporting the efforts of our sister who founded the event,” Diamond said.

Delta Phi Epsilon and Sig-ma Nu raised $34, 639.93 for the kids, more than $12,000 more than last year, setting the record for the most money raised by any team at Terp Thon in its four-year history. Terp Thon itself also broke records, raising $306,735.45, becoming the most successful fourth year dance marathon in history.

“As my fourth year participating in Terp Thon, this was an amazing way to leave,” senior Brina Furman said. “Today more than ever I am proud to be a DPhiE.”

Spring 2013 3New philanthropy event promotes body image

With a major event for our fall philanthropy wrapped up for the year, our new Vice President of Pro-gramming, TJ Freedberg, decided it was time to start a new tradition.

Delta Phi Epsilon has three na-tional philanthropies: the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Delta Phi Epsilon Education Foundation, and ANAD, Anorexia Nervosa and As-sociated Disorders. The Delta Xi chapter at the University of Mary-land has always participated in na-tional ANAD week every February, which consisted of a bake sale, a speaker or two and one other small fundraiser that changed each year.

This year, Delta Phi Epsilon took on the ambitious goal of hold-ing an event as exciting as our Fall Cystic Fibrosis event, Deepher Dude. Freedberg, along with her ANAD Chair, Loren McDaniels, planned and executed the first annu-al ANAD Fashion Show.

The National Association of An-orexia Nervosa and Associated Dis-orders is a non-profit organization that uses donations for treatment, support, education, data and events.

The idea of this event was to en-courage positive body images in a fun manner that promotes self-con-fidence.

Fourteen fraternities and every sorority signed up to cosponsor the event and have members of their chapters walk in the show. Clothing donors to the fashion show included Lily Pulitzer, the Pink Palm, Little White Fashion Truck, Route One Apparel, Cloud 9 and Stella and Dot Jewelry. Georgetown Cupcakes were also given out at the event.

On Feb 26, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. more than 300 people came to Richie Coliseum to support the cause. Tickets were sold for $5 a person before the event and at the door. The ANAD Fashion Show

raised a total of $3,317 for Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders.

We aspire to continue this event every spring and increase our profits to donate to ANAD.

Widener University on Feb. 16, 2013. Melissa Silverbush, Becky Kaminsky, Ricki Spack, Brina Fur-man, and Sarah Geist, members of Delta Xi’s Executive Board attend-

Spring 2012

Delta Phi Epsilon prides itself on the connections we have with the sisters in our chapter as well as in-ternationally. In the past, Delta Phi Epsilon International Headquarters, IHQ, has provided leading sisters from every chapter with the oppor-tunity to attend a weekend-long con-vention in July. The purpose of this convention was to discuss chapter problems and get advice from other chapters and leadership members, meet sisters from other chapters, and create the sisterhood bond with more women. This year, IHQ changed the convention format to eight smaller one-day conventions called Engage U. IHQ says the purpose of Engage U is to “Empower you to give the gift of leadership.” The Delta Xi Chapter of Del-ta Phi Epsilon at the University of Maryland attended Engage U at

other chapters conduct their judicial system, chapter meeting and philan-thropy events,” Ricki Spak, vice president of academic affairs, said. The convention covered topics such as the importance of rituals, how to deal with disciplinary cas-es, how to motivate sisters to at-tend events and the importance of a strong leadership team. There was also time throughout the day to talk

with sisters from the other chap-ters about the differences and

similarities between chapters. “Engage U helped make our executive board stronger and

gave us insight as to how oth-er chapters deal with things we struggle to succeed in,” Brina Furman, member at Large, said. “I feel that we not only became

stronger as an executive board, but were able to help other chapters in areas where we succeed.”
