Empowering Families from Homelessness to Self-Sufficiency

From its inception in 1999, Just Neighbors Interfaith Homeless Network has been at the forefront of assisting homeless families in getting back on their feet. To this day, we remain the only emergency homeless shelter for families in this area.

While we’ve not eradicated the problem of homelessness, we have come a long way with the assistance of many members of our community who have felt a calling to serve those less fortunate than themselves.

A generous donor is a grandmother who routinely takes her grandchildren shopping for items for our guests. She’s a fantastic bargain shopper and once a month brings us her “finds”. She also makes blankets for children’s Welcome Bags, which include a book, a stuffed animal and the blankets. Her reason?

“We get to be a part of something so special.”

We discovered at the Volunteer Awareness Fair in mid-April that this lovely woman does a lot of volunteering in the Fort Wayne area and almost always for people who are in crisis.

Students at the University of St. Francis have for the past several years provided us with the clay bowls that

we use for our Just Dinner fund raiser. Their grassroots effort provides around 300 bowls a year that are sold to raise money for our organization. Our 2017 Just Dinner was a success and we’re now making plans for the 2018 event.

Local businesses are also a part of our support team. Poorman’s Heating and Air Conditioning have been contributing to Just Neighbors for years and once again provided Easter baskets for all of our children this year.

One of the many volunteers who provides dinners each evening to Just Neighbors guests relates that one of her favorite parts of the dinner hour is having a child lead grace.

“Their simple thanks speak volumes.”

Thanks to the generosity of the AAUW Trust, we’ve been able to provide families leaving the program with a basket filled with cleaning supplies. Cindy and Bonnie have been involved with shopping for supplies.

“We both feel that we’ve been very blessed throughout our lives and we enjoy giving back so that others can feel that same joy.”

Our new Marketing and Development Director, Nancy McCammon-Hansen, has been a part of a host congregation that housed our guests until we opened our current facility in 2009. She and fellow parishioners organized a Chili Cook-off one year to

raise money for Just Neighbors and got our executive director Terry Anderson involved as a judge. Nancy says, “The guest speaker we had that Sunday had

been a guest at Just Neighbors along with her family. Her story relayed the message that becoming homeless is far easier than most of us realize. And it can happen to anyone at almost any income level.”

A New Beginning Spring 2018

Making the World a Better Place

We’ve recently signed up for the Fresh Thyme Giving Bag Program. When you purchase a shopping bag from Fresh Thyme, you can designate Just Neighbors as the recipient of the donation each bag’s purchase provides. It’s an easy way to donate.

People want to make a difference in the lives of others. People want to make the world a better place. At Just Neighbors, our sole mission is to provide shelter, food, professional case management, and a new beginning for families caught in the crisis of homelessness. But we’re pleased we can also provide good-hearted people throughout our community with the opportunity to serve. Our lead story identifies a few (Just a few of many!) ways in which individuals, churches, businesses, and civic organizations give of themselves for others. We’re grateful for the opportunity to see how such simple acts of kindness, generosity, and compassion reveal the best of our humanity and make our world better for all.
