FROM THE RABBI
Dear Friends,
I am excited to share with you the news that I have been awarded the Daniel
Jeremy Silver Fellowship at Harvard University for one semester next year,
and will be spending my sabbatical (January 1 thru May 31, 2017), taking
classes, researching and writing at Harvard. The fellowship is awarded
annually to a congregational rabbi for the pursuit of a project in Jewish
scholarship. I wanted to tell you a little about the project I will be researching
during this fellowship.
As a rabbi, one of my goals is to open up and “translate” so to speak, the richness of Jewish
texts and literature, so as to expand the possibility for Jewish religious and spiritual growth and
reflection. Yet the secular identity and perspective of many Jews can generate either disinterest
or skepticism that may hinder the exploration religious literature or ideas in conventional
settings. In the course of pursuing and sharing my own passion for literature, however, both
Jewish and secular, I have found that modern literature addresses some of these “religious”
themes in a secular context and opens the possibility of exploring spiritual issues in a group of
people with diverse beliefs.
Take for the moment a spiritual topic such as transcendence. For modernist writers such
as Virginia Wolf or Franz Kafka, for example, “transcendence generally meant experiences that
originated in the ordinary world, not the supernatural, but that opened some sort of insight
beyond the realm of the ordinary . . .” as scholar Pericles Lewis writes. Books like To the Light-
house go beyond the boxes of secular/sacred by looking at the transcendence within ordinary
life. There are many scholars at this time examining those kinds of issues in religion and
literature.
My goal is to look at one particular modernist Yiddish writer, Jacob Glatstein, a Polish
immigrant to America, as a way to explore this topic both within his writing and other writers
of his time (1920’s and 1930’s especially). By doing so, I will not only be able to study one of the
greatest Yiddish writers of both poetry and prose, but I will be able to explore what is sometimes
called the “secular sacred” as a way to open up discussion of challenging religious issues in a
context that is inviting to both secular and religious Jews with diverse beliefs.
In our Yiddish Literature classes on March 29 and April 16th, we will be reading Jacob
Glatstein, and if you are interested, you can call the office for the reading. We would love you to
join us. I hope that is just the beginning of our study together, and of many discussions to come.
I am so excited for this opportunity to study and write, and so grateful to the community
for affirming study and growth as central part of the work of a rabbi and spiritual leader.
With blessings to all for a joyful Purim and meaningful Pesach,
Rabbi Caryn Broitman

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
As you read this, Purim is a week away!
Our students have been busily preparing for their Purim Pup-
pet Spiel. All sets and puppets will have been made by hand. Please
join us on 3/23! Details elsewhere in this issue.
The Hebrew tutoring program has gained momentum and I
have observed improvements in the students’ Hebrew reading
skills. This progress is achieved in part by fine work between our
tutors and parents.
I had the pleasure of substitute teaching for the Rabbi’s Hebrew Class during her absence and it was a pleasure getting to know our new
(amazing!) students.
Summer plans are in the works. If you are considering sending your child to a Jew-
ish Sleep-Away Camp, please let me know so that I can direct you to some possible schol-
arships. Indeed one of them is our MVHC Camp Fund. It has been concluded in numer-
ous studies (and indeed in the stories of many of our own lives) that these camp experi-
ences enhance Jewish identity.
Spring is coming, along with Passover. Please let the office know if you will be at-
tending the community Seder on April 23.
As the year flies by I want to thank our incredible teachers and volunteers: Karen
Bressler, Rabbi Broitman, Violet Cabot, Sally Cohn, Rose Herman, Melissa Kagan, Avi Lev and Marsha Shufrin. Each of you truly cares about the students and do a great job
every week.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Dear members of the MVHC,
For the last 15 years the Center has been involved with the
MVRH scholarship program. It has been an honor and a privi-
lege to have helped so many Martha's Vineyard graduating stu-
dents continue their education. Once again I am asking you to
please donate to this wonderful community building fund. The
students and myself are truly grateful for your generosity. You
may send your donation to the Hebrew Center or call in with
your credit card number 508-693-0745.
In advance thank you,

Saturday Morning Kiddushim
In the spirit of giving, you can sign up to do a kiddush on a Saturday morning after services. We need
volunteers for some dates in April, May and June. You can celebrate a birthday, anniversary, family
visiting, observing a yahrzeit. Call or email me and I will happily put you on the calendar. The He-
brew Center supplies the wine, juice, and challah. We have also started a “potluck kiddush” for those
Saturdays we don’t have a volunteer. If you come to services, please bring something to eat and
share. Some popular items are bagels and cream cheese, cookies, hardboiled eggs, fruit, cheese and
crackers, a salad, something to drink. Fish is okay, too, but no meat please. Whether you bring
something or not, please stay for the kiddush. We enjoy seeing you, talking to you, and sharing that
peaceful time after a morning of Torah study. We help you set up and clean up, also. Please consider
performing this pleasant and enjoyable mitzvah.

COMMITTEES
Program Committee Report The program committee has sponsored a panel discussion following a viewing of the mov-
ie Son of Saul at the Film Center.
Our Yiddish Literature series will continue on May22. If you are interested, RSVP to the
office to get the assigned readings.
For all those people who wished they could read Hebrew and follow along with the pray-
ers, there is an opportunity for you to sign up for a beginning Hebrew reading class. If you are
interested in this class, please call the office.
There will be many more exciting programs planned for the Spring and Summer including
a program called the Conversation Project which facilitates difficult conversations about end of
life issues. Watch for announcements of future programs in the weekly e-mail blasts.
Membership Committee
Currently the MVHC has 338 memberships with 14 of them having belonged for 50 years or more.
We encourage you to bring family and friends to our religious and social events hoping that they too will choose to join our vibrant and caring community. The only Jewish house of worship on Martha's Vineyard.
Please check our weekly announcements for the date of our yearly Membership Committee sponsored beach service.
We are saddened to report the deaths of the following members since the Annual Meeting last July...Leslie J. Stark, Rabbi Harold White, J. Norman Freed, Helen Issokson, Marianne Goldberg, Arthur Obermayer and Andrew Dickerman.
May they rest in peace.
Bonnie George Membership Chair
Social Action Committee
The Social Action Committee has helped Carole Early find volunteers for the community sup-
pers at St. Augustine's church. A fire at a home in Edgartown prompted donations of clothes
and toys for the affected residents. Soup for the homeless was prepared and delivered to the
shelter site in Edgartown. A gathering in the Fall to help the Tibetan crisis was organized by
Zee Gamson and Kanta Lipsky. Efforts to keep the food pantry's shelves stocked is a tradition
that continues throughout the High Holiday's food drive.
Any suggestions about future projects can be sent to the Acting Chair, Robert Herman.

ANNUAL APPEAL
It is with great pride that we announce the MVHC has once again surpassed its objective for the An-
nual Appeal. Together, we raised over $75,000, exceeding our goal by $17,000!! This is a remarkable
achievement, one for which we should all feel proud. Our community is a caring and supportive one,
and I thank each and ever donor for making this Annual Appeal such a huge success.
As you know the Annual Appeal is our most important fundraising effort. Your contribution matters
because it allows us to remain a vibrant and strong, year-round Hebrew Center. The monies raised
help to pay salaries, fund building maintenance and repairs, and provide needed funds for our en-
riching services, programs, and events throughout the year.
I wish to thank everyone who contributed so generously; I am truly grateful for your sincere generos-
ity. Also, I wish to thank and personally acknowledge everyone who worked so diligently with me on
this very important fundraiser. Thank you to our committed Board of Trustees, who support and
help me throughout this process; to Rabbi Broitman, whose leadership, as well as spiritual and edu-
cational guidance inspire so many to give so generously; to Sally Cohn, who works tirelessly beside
me to keep things organized and running smoothly; to Sid Franks, who offers advise and support
whenever asked; to Bonnie George, who helps write the many, many thank you notes; to Barsha
Tolin who provides hours of administrative assistance; and last but certainly not least, to Ron and
Max, who, each year, provide me with the support and guidance needed to make the Annual Appeal
such a success.
Thank you all so very much!
With sincere gratitude,
Cynthia Hendelman
