Hamilton MacFarland, 33°Hamilton “Mac” MacFarland was born on October 11, 1919 inArdmore, Pennsylvania and died on August 30, 2004. He wasa graduate of Lower Merion High School. He served in WorldWar II and was honorably discharged in 1944 as a 2nd Lt.Platoon Leader. He worked as a sales representative for D.E. Shipp Belting Company of Waco and retired after 42 yearswith the company. He was a member of the Oak CliffPresbyterian Church where he served many years as anordained Elder.

Brother MacFarland was raised to the Sublime Degree ofMaster Mason in Sam P. Cochran Lodge No. 1335 in 1960.Brother MacFarland was invested with the honor of KnightCommander of the Court of Honor in October of 1969 andwas coroneted a Thirty-third Degree IGH in November of1977.

An active Scottish Rite Mason, Brother MacFarland was alsoa member of Hella Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Garland, Knightsof Mecca, The Royal Order of Scotland, Knights Templar ofTexas and the Order of the Eastern Star (Mike ThomasChapter No. 951).

In deference to the MaundyThursday rites of churches,however, it was deemedappropriate that a ScottishRite nonobligatory “Celebrationof Remembrance and renewal”should replace the traditionalMaundy Thursday observanceand be held near the vernalequinox, which is March 21st.This year we will have theobservance on March 10th.

The Valley of Dallas has experienced many landmark changesin its recent history: the deaths of Joseph W. Regian,Clyde Howard and Harry Post, III - all Inspectors GeneralHonorary and all actively involved in masonry and inparticular the Valley. Then our Chairman, Fred E. Allen,33º, elects to retire making it the first time our Valley hashad a sitting Chairman Emeritus. Life is a transition inevery facet and it is incumbent upon each of us to adapt tothe transition and seize the moment.

Your new Chairman is truly humbled by his appointment andthe confidence that both S.G.I.G. Jack Hightower and FredAllen have demonstrated. The shadows of Brothers RobertE. Dillard and Fred E. Allen past Chairmen, continue tostalk the halls of our Cathedral; their accomplishments areoverwhelming.

I solicit your support as together we continue to build ourValley into a fraternity whose membership is highly desiredby young masons. Our Valley, our fraternity, yes even ourCountry, needs for each of us to stand tall and be countedat a time when malicious unchecked forces are attackingour foundational, personal, patriotic and spiritual beliefsfor which our forefathers unhesitatingly paid the supremeprice. I pray not for the financial outpouring in our Valley,not for the increase in numbers of members in our Valley,not for the power and glory of our Valley, but for thesacred principles and values that are traditional andhistorically embedded in our fraternity.

Our challenge is to revive the passion that rightfullyestablishes masonry as a leader in making good men better,

in honoring the moral and spiritual values that built our greatCountry and in stepping up to membership challenges withnew ideas and unflappable courage. We should not ask whathas the Scottish Rite done for us, but what each of use cando for the Scottish Rite. I look forward to working witheach of you as your servant-leader and covet your prayers.

All three reveal the little knowncontribution of Freemasonry to American culture and history.In an unprecedented collaboration with the Grand Lodge of Freeand Accepted Masons of the District of Columbia, and artistPeter Waddell, The Octagon, the Museum of the AmericanArchitectural Foundation is organizing an original exhibitionfocusing specifically on the interesting and significantcontributions of Freemasonry to the design and architecture ofWashington, DC.

The tradition of Masonic architecture in the United States isgrounded in a history far older than the establishment of thiscountry. Many of this nation’s founding fathers were themselvesFreemasons and the Masonic stamp is visible throughout thecity of Washington, DC, the surrounding metropolitan area, andthe entire country.

Featuring 20 original paintings by history painter Peter Waddellcomplemented by original Masonic artifacts, the exhibition willtell the story of the city’s design from a new perspective andshed light on the Masonic connections of many historic buildingsin the nation’s capital. The intention of the exhibition is todemystify the role that Freemasons have played in this nation’sarchitectural history and to provide a different viewpoint ofvarious historical events.

Original artifacts from the rich collections of the metropolitanarea’s lodges, many never seen before by the public, willaccompany the paintings. The three ritual silver cups used atthe laying of the Washington Monument’s cornerstone will bedisplayed with a colorful painting depicting that historic event.An exquisite Klismos-inspired chair designed by architect JohnRussell Pope for his architectural masterpiece, the House of theTemple on 16th Street, will be shown with a painting depictingthe interior of that magnificent structure. A selection of Masonicceremonial aprons, ranging from plain white example to elaborateembroidered versions will also be featured. These paintingsand objects will explain some of the secret symbols ofFreemasonry and provide an understanding of how Masonicsymbols were and are used as powerful symbols of this nation.

The exhibition opens to the public on May 18, 2005 and remainson view through December 31, 2005. Extensive educationalprogramming is planned to accompany the exhibition, includingwalking tours of area Lodges and Temples, musical performances,lectures and workshops.

Peter Waddell, well-known for his work as a history painter,has created several series of paintings that have served as thefoundation for popular exhibitions at The Octagon, includingmost recently, Inside the Temple of Liberty: 19th-CenturyInteriors of the U.S. Capitol Building (2002). A group of masonsis working closely with Mr. Waddell to identify topics for thepaintings and assist in the research necessary to ensure theaccuracy of the work.

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest secularfraternal organizations, whose members are concerned with moraland spiritual values. Freemasonry dates to the Middle Ages asan organization for stone masons, very similar to other craftguilds. Implements of architectural craftsmen are usedsymbolically in the organization’s system of instruction. ManyAmerican architects and builders have been and are Freemasonsand the ceremonies of Freemasonry are still used at thededication of the cornerstones of important buildings.

The Octagon, the museum of the American ArchitecturalFoundation (AAF), is a nationally recognized museum ofarchitecture and design located two blocks from the WhiteHouse. One of Washington, DC’s earliest residences, the buildingis a National Historic Landmark (1960) and is accredited bythe American Association of Museums (1973). The Octagon’smission is to educate the public about architecture, design,historic preservation and stewardship of our architecturalheritage. These goals are accomplished through on-siteexhibitions, traveling exhibitions, collections and a wide varietyof creative public programs.

National TreasureThe new movie National Treasure, starring Nicolas Cage, openedin theaters across the nation on November 19, 2004. It quicklyrose to be the highest grossing file ($35.3 million in ticketsales) of the weekend and has already generated an extremelywide public awareness of Freemasonry. Most importantly, itportrays Masonry in a positive light and accents the significanceof the Founding Fathers to our national identity. Many of theseearly patriots identified as Masons in the film, like GeorgeWashington and Benjamin Franklin are well known. Only onereference is not correct. Early in the movie, Charles Carroll,identified as the last survivor of the 56 patriots who signed theDeclaration of Independence, is portrayed as a Freemason.Charles Carroll of Maryland was not a member of the fraternity.(Historically, it is believed the reason he was identified as aMason is that he was present at the laying of the cornerstone ofthe B&O Railroad).

Most of the movie is entirely fictional. There is no “NationalTreasure” as defined by the film, nor were Freemasons as agroup ever involved in collecting and safeguarding valuableantiquities on behalf of all humanity. Nevertheless, Masonicprincipals and values are referenced many times in the film, andthe audience receives a very favorable impression on the Craft.

The movie is rated PG because of “mild violence.” It really is afamily movie, and one all Masons should enjoy. It might even befun for a lodge to have a “movie night” and sponsor members andtheir families who wish to attend. Discussions about the filmshould result in many beneficial insights regarding Freemasonryamong both Masons and the general public.

Read this and make a copy for your files in case youneed to refer to it someday. Maybe we should all takesome of this advice!

A corporate attorney sent the following out to theemployees in his company:

1. The next time you order checks have onlyyour initials (instead of first name) andlast name put on them. If someone takesyour checkbook, they will not know if yousign your checks with just your initialsor your first name, but your bank willknow how you sign your checks.

2. When you are writing checks to pay onyour credit card accounts, DO NOT putthe complete account number on the“Memo” line. Instead, just put the lastfour digits. The credit card companyknows the rest of the number, and anyonewho might be handling your check as itpasses through all the check processingchannels won’t have access to it.

3. Put your work # on your checks insteadof your home phone. If you have a P.O.Box, use that address instead of yourhome address. If you do not have a P.O.Box, use your work address. Never haveyour SS# printed on your checks. Youcan add it if it is necessary, but if youhave it printed, anyone can get it.

4. Place the contents of your wallet on aphotocopy machine. Do both sides of eachlicense, credit card, etc. You will knowwhat you had in your wallet and all of theaccount numbers and phone numbers tocall and cancel. Keep the photocopy in asafe place. I also carry a photocopy ofmy passport when I travel either here orabroad. We’ve all heard horror storiesabout fraud that’s committed on us instealing a name, address, Social Securitynumber, or credit cards.

Further, here’s some critical information to limit thedamage in case you or someone you know experiencesidentity theft:

1. We have been told we should cancel ourcredit cards immediately. But the key ishaving the toll free numbers and your cardnumbers handy so you know whom to call.Keep those where you can find them.

2. File a police report immediately in thejurisdiction where your credit cards, etc.,were stolen. This proves to credit pro-viders you were diligent, and this is a firststep toward an investigation (if there everis one).

3. Call the three National Credit ReportingOrganizations immediately to place afraud alert on your name and Social Se-curity number. The alert notifies anycompany that checks your credit that yourinformation was stolen, and they have tocontact you by phone to authorize newcredit.

If you are willing to pass this information along, itcould really help someone that you care about.
