Spring Term 2018, issue 5

HEADLINES Rose Hill have been out and about this week. Although some matches have been cancelled due to the weather we have still managed to send pupils out to represent the school. Well done for all your hard work. Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you, was the message from our Internet Safety Week. Further information for support-ing children’s online activity can be found at www.saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/2018. Year 2 have visited Tunbridge Wells Mosque where they met Imman Yasser, the children shared what they had learnt from studying Islam this half term. 4R delivered a delightful assembly on generosity found in everyday activities. They created a wonderful Mr Men picnic scene, with various sized hampers. Well done 4R, excellent words and singing. Your will notice from our online calendar we have a couple assemblies coming up with visiting speakers. On 28 February Mr Gooyer, Head of Bede’s School and on 15 March, Mr McPherson, Head of Worth will be speaking. You are most welcome to meet them for coffee beforehand and then join assembly. It is with great sadness we announce the departure of Mr Phil Long and Mrs Caroline Long. They are about to embark on new ventures. Over the last 20 years they have had leading roles in shaping the school as Director of Studies and Head of Pre-Prep. They will leave us at the end of the Summer Term. They will be sorely missed. I am sure you will join me in wishing them all the very best for the future. If you have moment, do visit our gallery in the Prep School Reception area. Amongst a number of pieces of art work, Jack Percival is displaying his fine drawing and painting skills. The theme of his work is Transfor-mation. Well done Jack. “And the Spring arose on the garden fair, Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere; And each flower and herb on Earth's dark breast Rose from the dreams of its wintry rest.” From The Sensitive Plant, by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) An emerging change in season has been seen this week; Year 2 have donned their salopettes and made their way into the woods in the flurry of snow. However, the emerging bright green tips of bluebells and crocuses hopefully a sign that when we return from half term spring will be here. I wish you all a very happy half term.

Spring Term 2018, issue 5

Please be aware that over the first weekend of half term the electricity power to the school will be cut off until Monday 12 February. As a result of this our School Portal will be offline during this period, therefore we will not be releasing Reports and Grade cards until 4pm on the Monday afternoon. This situation has oc-curred due to our exciting swimming pool development, which we are glad to say is nearly complete. We apologise for the situation and hope that you will understand our predicament. Philip Long, Director of Studies

Year 3 read some of their write-ups about Roman Day and shared some interesting facts. Year 4 read out their ‘Lion’ poems using a range of adverbs for effect. Year 5 talked about their recent celebration in French lessons of ‘Galette des Rois’ and Epiphany. The assembly was ‘compèred’ by our very own ‘mini Ant & Dec’ - Alex and Seb!

YEAR 7 & 8 DIPLOMA Rose Hill School is starting a new initiative this week for Years 7 & 8. They have been given a diploma booklet to look at over half term and plan which tasks they would like to undertake. The diploma includes a range of life skills which are all of a practical and useful nature. They will practise them at home and then be test-ed in school. It promises to be beneficial for everyone. Imogen Scarbrough, Head of Upper School

On Wednesday Imam Yasser welcomed Year 2 to the Tunbridge Wells Mosque. The children were able to share the knowledge they have gained in their learning about Islam this half term. Here are a selection of their memories “I was able to see the Quran and now know that Muslims read from right to left - I found that really surprising” “Listening to Imam Yasser perform the call to prayer” “Seeing the writing inside the Quran” “Seeing the prayer mats all facing Mecca” “Listening to Imam Yasser explain the 5 Pillars of Islam” “Seeing and being able to hold the prayer beads”

The children have collaged their lighthouses with reflective materials. There is a wheel behind each light-house which spins to give the illusion of a the lamp turning.

MR BEATON & MISS NORTHEN’S ENGLISH CLASS Mr Beaton and Miss Northen’s English class have been learning how to make their writing more descriptive. After reading ‘The Most Magnificent Mosque’ by Ann Jungman, the class were asked to plan and write a description of the Blue Mosque, Istanbul. They thought about the mosque’s surrounding gardens and used their senses to inspire their ideas. Here is an example by Charlie: As I joyfully approach the mosque, I could see the beautiful sunrise, massive cas-cading domes, towering turrets that could simply not go unnoticed and beauti-fully manicured flowers. I was in awe! I wandered into the garden and smelt the fragrant essence of roses, scented oranges and the sweet fresh air. The mixture of which calmed and relaxed me. The patterned walls made me forget my troubles, I felt I could stay there forever. After a while I entered the place of worship. I could hear the rhyth-mic sound of praying and trees swaying. I felt secure and amazed. The dreamy structure soothed me, it smelt damp yet fresh. I could feel the bumpy, cold mosaics and the smooth wall between my fingers. As I walked out, I ran the adventure through my hand and thought it will probably be my life’s greatest en-joyment.

PE SOCKS Please may I remind parents that it is essential that all pupils have white socks for their PE lessons, preferably these should be named. Thank you, Mr Hinchliffe

BOYS HOCKEY As we approach the hockey season, could parents please ensure that the boys have both shin pads and mouth guard for after half term. The school are able to offer boil and bite mouth guards, which can be added to termly invoices.

SECONDARY SCHOOL OPEN DAYS ‘789’ MATHS COMPETITION The ‘789’ Maths Competition at Brighton College was a team event with 2 pupils from Year 6 and 2 from Year 5 and we took 2 teams. There were 6 rounds of questions: Where’s my Polygon, Maths Catchphrase, Making Numbers, The Maths Dash, Treasure Hunt and Maths Race. It was great fun and everyone enjoyed themselves.

On Thursday Year 7 went to Eastbourne for an Art trip. It was a fun filled day out with plenty of things to do. When we arrived our first port of call was the lunch hall where we enjoyed Eastbourne’s lovely lunch. The best bit of the lunch was the hot chocolate machine. (Sam got rather carried away with it). After lunch we went to the Towner Art Gallery where the main focus of the exhibition was ‘Repetition’. There were two rooms, in one the main subject was circles, in the other, the main subject was further repetition of themes. Next we went to the art department for a ceramics workshop. We made two halves of a huge pot which when put together created a beautiful vase. The theme for the vases was ‘British Values’. We were spilt into two groups; each group decorated their half of the vase the way they wanted. The artwork of the first group (Sam, Abi, Rufus) had the Queens Guard as their centrepiece. The main focus of the art work by the second group was Big Ben and the British flag. At the end of a fantastic workshop we had a snack and reflected on a super day. Sam, Abi and Rufus.

we are entering the final stages of construction, with approximately 5 weeks until completion. Tiling, deco-rating and plant room works starting next week.

YEAR 4 TRIP TO THE BRITISH MUSEUM Last week Year 4 travelled by coach to the British Museum. We visited Room 4 first to see the Rosetta Stone and spent 30 minutes investigating the exhibits. We then attended a 40 minute talk in the Clore Education Centre where our pupils were keen to answer questions on Ancient Egypt. On our way to the Egyptian galleries on the first floor of the Museum we walked through the Anglo-Saxon and Roman galleries – 2 topics studied when the pupils were in Year 3. The Egyptian galleries on the top floor contained many examples of mummies brought back from Egypt. The favourite of many pupils were the mummified animals-especially the cats!

Katherine Rundell’s ‘The Explorer’ is the winner of this year’s Costa Children’s Book Award. The story follows four children fighting for survival in the Amazon and has been likened to the wonderful Journey to the River Sea. Thank you to Ava S (Year 4) who gave the book a 5 star review on Scout.

WORLD BOOK DAY - BOOK CHARACTERS DAY IST MARCH The whole school will be celebrating World Book Day by dressing up as our favourite book characters. I can’t wait to see everyone‘s costumes. Please visit the World Book Day website for more information: http://www.worldbookday.com/

Please remember that the Prep School’s library catalogue is available via the school website. Children are able to login to check their loans, write reviews, reserve books and much more. Children are welcome to borrow books over the half-term break. Happy Reading, Mrs Macdonald-Brown School Librarian
