Letter From the CEO

Dear Friends,

This year is a celebration of so much hard work and so many accomplishments. Looking around, Jubilee hums with productivity and positivity. After twenty years, we can all be proud of how far we’ve come.

But our work isn’t finished. We have lots of data about the families that use Jubilee’s services, but we must be persistent in reaching new households every day. We love serving all ages with our whole-family approach, but it’s up to us to ensure that the next generation of Jubilee’s neighbors stay engaged and on track.

Recently a thirteen-year-old boy who used to be active in our program came to the park with his little sister and grandmother to hang out as a family. They couldn’t find a place to park, so they went to another basketball court just outside our neighborhood. While there, rival gang members got into an argument. Shots were fired, and the boy was caught in the crossfire. He is now recovering in the hospital.

It’s easy to see our beautiful campus and think “Mission Accomplished,” but there are still families that need Jubilee more than ever. They need a safe place to spend time together, with enrichment programs that are accessible for the whole family. Jubilee continues to add capacity to its programs and campus, striving to grow along with the demand for our services.

Thank you for joining us in this year of celebration as we continue to catalyze change in a neighborhood ripe with hope. With your help, Jubilee will improve lives and strengthen community for another 20 years.

Sincerely,

Ben Leal

Jubilee Celebrates 20 Years! You are cordially invited to the biggest party in Jubilee’s history—a year-long celebration of our 20th Anniversary!

Two decades is a long time, and we want this birthday to be big. In February, we kicked off the year with a ‘launch party’ and the unveiling of our new Endowment Tree. Last month, we had a Jubilee Birthday Bash with the whole neighborhood, plus lots and lots of our vol-unteers from over the years.

And on November 4th…we’ll host our first-ever gala! A huge party at the Omni Dallas with drinks, dinner, dancing and ‘birthday’ games, will support the launch of Jubilee’s newest initia-tive: the Specialized Student Support (S3) Program.

The S3 Program will add components to Jubilee’s award-winning educa-tion programs (see page 9) in order to better serve students with spe-cial learning needs.

The need for is program is staggering; in the three top feeder schools for Jubilee’s afterschool pro-gram, there are 150 chil-dren who are challenged by dyslexia, ADHD, or autism-spectrum disor-ders. Through tailored curriculum, staff train-ing, adaptive technology, and parent empower-ment, Jubilee will pro-vide the extra help those children need in order to learn and succeed.

Community members gather for the Birthday Bash celebration walk

Low-income and minority students have a higher rate of learning difference diagnosis, yet the schools that serve these students often lack specialized staff, teach-ing tools, or parent edu-cation. The S3 Program will offer extra support to existing successful programs to ensure that these students have the resources to learn, grow, and excel alongside their friends and siblings at Jubilee.

At the core of Jubilee’s mission is education, helping to improve lives and strengthen commu-nity through new skills and knowledge. As we enter our next decade of service, Jubilee will con-tinue to catalyze com-munity revitalization through programs that are nurturing, innova-tive, and visionary.

You are part of Jubilee’s success story, and we hope you will be part of its next chapter. Please mark your calendars for November 4th and plan to celebrate, love, and dream with Jubilee!

Jubilee staff welcome Dr. Ben Carson and his wife, Candy.

Jubilee welcomed Mrs. and Dr. Ben Carson, Mayor Mike Rawlings, and Rep. Jeb Hensar-ling for a visit during his “listening tour” in DFW. The tour showcased Jubi-lee’s approach to com-munity revitalization and affordable housing.

Hensarling said, “It is this kind of community-based innovation that is key to reforming HUD and providing assistance for housing in the 21st Century.”

HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson Visits Jubilee

“Get On Your Feet” Jubilee’s annual Health & Wellness Fair was held in April with a theme of “Get On Your Feet.” The event kicked off with a community walk through the neighborhood and a health fair in the Park. Public Health is one of Jubilee’s five pillars, focusing on nutrition and health education and exercise programs.

The event included games in the Park and ex-ercises along the walking path. More than 35 ven-dors provided free health services and resources to the community. A surprise visit was even made from Mavs Mascot “Champ”!

Jubilee Accepts the 2017 Luminary AwardThe Luminary Award was created in 2009 by SMU’s Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development to honor individuals and organizations that have shown an extraordinary commitment to improving people’s lives through education. The award is given annually to a local, regional and national recipient.

Jubilee proudly accepted the Luminary Award in March, with a reception at SMU. More than 70 guests attended in Jubilee’s honor.

“At a time when rapid change can be unsettling, our honorees have been improving people’s lives over the course of years through dedication, thoughtfulness and hard work,” says Paige Ware, Simmons School interim dean. “They represent what meaningful change stands for, and that makes our social fabric stronger and more enduring.”

Also honored were The Meadows Foundation, and the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance project.Board member Gigi Poglitsch and her

husband Jerry are two long-time Jubilee volunteers who endowed a scholarship at the Simmons School of Education to be used specifically education interns at Jubilee.Gigi also serves as a co-chair of Jubilee’s

Education Task Force. In the video presented at the Luminary Award, Gigi talked about the history, growth, and importance of Jubilee’s education programming.

“We want everything to be as perfect as it can be. We want it to be the highest quality that we can possibly provide.” --Gigi Poglitsch, Luminary Award Video
