Cover Picture
Susan Briffett (painting name) is a local artist. She is very versatile, painting many subjects, mainly in
pastel, but sometimes in acrylic.
Susan can be contacted for demonstrations, commissions or for details of the art group on 020 8952 6462.
1. Chairman’s Report.
John Williams
Anmer Lodge Development
We are concerned about the Anmer Lodge development. Nothing seems to have happened since
the site gained planning approval last year. We have heard rumours that M & S may not now go
ahead with their Simply Food supermarket in the light of current trading conditions. Should this
rumour prove true, where would that leave the rest of the development? Who knows what would
fill the gap? Most people who have spoken to us say they like the idea of a small M&S food store
but aren’t so sure about all the extra housing, or the extra traffic the scheme will generate.
To have the proposed stores location filled with even more residential development would be the
least inspiring outcome. The scheme was sold to us on the grounds that the M&S aspect of the
development was vital for the continued economic vitality for Stanmore’s shopping centre!
Win One, Lose One
Our only empty shop, the former fried chicken take away in Church Road, has now reopened as
Dominos. We then lost Memories of India in Buckingham Parade, a pity, as it was run by a very
nice family. However it looks as if an up-market burger bar and grill is going to take its place.
RNOH
Another piece of news which was most disappointing was the uncertainty over the redevelopment
of the RNOH facilities. The CEO, Rob Hurd, invited TV crews to the hospital to highlight the
antiquated state of some of the buildings, particularly the 1930s wards built as emergency hospital
accommodation at the outbreak of WW2 and never intended to be in use 75 years later.
Rob Hurd issued an ultimatum to the Government that if funding doesn’t come forward the site
may have to close and he needed a decision before the election. Rob said that it was getting
increasingly difficult to continue to deliver World Class Orthopaedic services.
One lady consultant surgeon summed up the danger of putting the site at risk to the interviewer
from the BBC One Show, “This hospital has a wealth of combined Orthopaedic skills and
knowledge. If it was dispersed it would be lost forever”!!
The closure of the RNOH would not only be a great loss to Stanmore but a National Tragedy. We
have had so many promises from politicians that the RNOH’s future is assured, it is a disgrace that
this outstanding hospital, a jewel in the NHS’s Crown, has its future hanging in the balance.
Stanmore’s 1632 Church.
Stanmore has a little known hidden treasure. Standing behind the present 1850 St John’s Church
is the ruin of its forerunner, Stanmore’s second church, consecrated in 1632. This is a rare red
brick church from the reign of Charles I’s era. Very few were built at this time when the country
was still unsettled over our conversion from Catholic to Protestant way of worship. The then
2.
Bishop of London, Bishop Laud (pronounced lord) consecrated the church which was largely paid
for by two Stanmore families, the Lake’s giving the land and Sir John Wolstenholme, a merchant
adventurer who has several places in Canada named after him, financed the building. Laud went
on to become Archbishop of Canterbury but then fell out with The Crown. They made up a series
of charges against him, one of which was that he consecrated a private Catholic Chapel at
Stanmore.
Totally untrue but the Crown could make things up as they wished. After some years, held as a
prisoner in the Tower of London, Laud was beheaded.
Our Grade 2* listed 1632 Church is virtually a unique building nationally, as a brick-built ruin from
an era when very few churches were built, and then still to be standing next to its working
replacement, makes it very rare indeed. A true asset for Stanmore! No one knows for sure why it
was partly dismantled and then left. The most popular theory is that the locals were very fond of
the old church and had the demolition stopped, but who knows? It is a nice explanation.
Back in the 1990s the ruin was in danger of collapse and a champagne lunch was hosted to save
it. Through local support and with the help of English Heritage around £250,000 was raised and
the ruin was stabilized. A condition was put on the investment by E H, that the ruin should be
opened to the public on a regular basis. Throughout the summer months the Church is open to the
public every Saturday afternoon and if you have not been, it’s well worth a visit.
We find ourselves in this position again with the ruin urgently needing works carried out to
maintain it for future generations. The new Rector, Matthew Stone, has set up a small committee,
which I am pleased to be on, to look for a way forward for the ruin. One thing we intend to do is to
start a Friends Group. Membership will be offered to the whole community as we see the Old
Church as a Stanmore Asset rather than a religious relic. Please look out for more details in the
near future, our 1632 ruin needs your help.
Bernays Gardens
You may have seen a recent article in MY Stanmore News concerning Bernays Garden. Back in November two
volunteers from Lloyds Bank Stanmore kindly made an offer to the Society to spend some time on a local project. We
chose to plant around one hundred daffodil bulbs in the central grass area of the Gardens. They are just starting to
come up and should look good very soon. Our thanks to the staff of Lloyds Bank and the Shaw Trust who supplied
the bulbs.
Fatal Accident
Sadly a fatal traffic accident recently took place just outside of the Bernays Gardens. An elderly
couple crossing from Old Church Lane to Rectory Lane were hit by a turning car. The man later
died from his injuries and his wife is seriously injured. Police are appealing for witnesses. Our
thoughts are with all concerned. This a dangerous place to cross the road with traffic coming from
several directions. Many people are crossing at this point to get to and from Stanmore Park.
Better to go a little out of your way by walking up to the traffic island to cross.
3.
General Election
We will be holding a public Hustings Meeting on April 20th at Stanmore College, 8pm start. We will
invite all of the local candidates, hopefully even the Tory candidate to take part! Put it in your diary.
It is your chance to ask those all important questions.
Stanmore Village Fete
Another date for your diary, our now annual Stanmore Village Fete will break with tradition this
year, the event will be held on Sunday June 7th, 12 noon to 4pm. We will be holding the event at
Stanmore Recreation Ground, Stanmore Hill and not Bernays Gardens as we plan more activities
with a bigger and better show this year.
Putting the Fete together is a lot of behind the scenes work for the ladies on our Committee and
even more on the day. If you would like to help out, particularly on the day, we would love to hear
from you.
Mr. Alf Porter
Alf Porter, a lifelong citizen of Stanmore, well almost (he went to school in Edgware.) Alf recently
died after a short illness at the grand age of 101 and will be missed by all that knew him. Alf was
an authority on local history and published several books, two on the subject of Stanmore in
Camera and Edgware in Camera, compiled from his vast photographic collection of bygone local
scenes. At one time he was the Chairman of the Stanmore & Harrow History Society. He had
worked for the de-Havilland aircraft company and was involved with the development of rocket
engines in the 1960s. Alf also served on The Stanmore Society Committee for many years and
played a major part in the campaign to save, and later restore, the Bernays Hall to its current
position as a fine Victorian Building. When you see the Bernays flag flying outside the hall, think of
Alf as he personally paid for it to be made as a replica of an original Victorian design.
President’s Notes
Tony Raymond
Please don’t miss the opportunity to visit Bentley Priory, the previous Headquarters of RAF Fighter
Command during the war. It is now a museum dedicated to its previous life during the Battle of
Britain. The museum has done an excellent job of recreating the atmosphere of those days and
while it is regrettable that the Government sold off the site, at least the new museum is well worth
a visit. We are lucky to have such a memorial. It is open to the public on Mondays, Wednesdays,
Fridays and Saturdays. And parking is plentiful.
The RNOH is busy preparing for its intended rebuilding, as the current buildings are old and do no
justice to the excellent Orthopaedic services provided. It is indeed probably the best hospital in the
country for this. The outline planning is complete, but I do have two initial reservations on the
proposal. First is the plan to move the main entrance from Brockley Hill round to Wood Lane. This
will create increased traffic into what was a country lane, and is now a rat run for vehicles avoiding
the congestion in the centre of Stanmore (which will get even worse with Anmer Lodge
development). Secondly is the plan to put traffic lights at the junction of Wood Lane and Brockley
Hill instead of the previous plan for a mini-roundabout. These lights will slow all the traffic and
increase air pollution, and almost certainly cost more. One reason for the lights is that a pedestrian
crossing can be incorporated, but this requires a walk from the current main entrance which I
strongly suspect will be ignored by most pedestrians. And if the main entrance is moved patients
and visitors will not be there. Please tell us what you think.

Another New Year another Newsletter!
Hello everyone. Membership renewal is falling very slowly onto my doormat! It would
assist the Committee if these fees could be paid without too much delay. Please do ring
me on 0794723215 and I will be happy to confirm whether or not payment has been made
for 2015.
In the meantime Spring is on its way and daffodils can be seen abundant in the stores and
popping up slowly from the ground after the cold damp weather we have been experiencing, and
what a lovely sight to see!
We are looking forward to the Village Fete to be held on 7th June at the Stanmore Recreation
Ground. Anyone who feels they would like to assist please do contact any member of the
committee. We do need more help.

I would welcome any contribution from members. The Newsletter would benefit from exchange of
views and ideas. Any time between now and mid-August would be fine for the next edition.
Again, very big THANK YOU to ALL our wonderful distributors. I don’t know what we would do
without you! We do need someone to do Marsh Lane and the bottom end of Dennis Lane.
Please let me know if you can help with this.
Afternoon Group Meetings Come and join us
Marilyn Raymond and Lynne Kaye Firstly once again, please note that our afternoon get-togethers at Oakmead Court now take place in
alternate months on a Thursday.
We still have the pleasure of using the Oakmead Court Lounge (Anchor Housing) in Valencia Road.
Come and join us, as we have said before, the more the merrier, all are welcome - just turn up for 2 o’clock.
You don’t realise how pleasing an event you are missing
There have been three enjoyable afternoons. In September, Pranita Salunke, a registered Occupational
Therapist gave us an illuminating talk on “Well-being Beyond 50!” A healthy heart, with how to get the best
out of our lives, physically, medically and mentally!
In November our Treasurer, Asif Siddiqi gave us a special insight into that glittering city ‘Dubai’ – where ‘All that glitters’.....is not necessarily gold! While at the start of this new year, Tony Raymond, the Society President, enlightened us with the Stanmore you may not know.
As I write this March is almost upon us. Our next meeting is on Thursday 14th May, speaker to be
announced.
Look out for posters in the Library and Sainsbury’s – on the wall by the ‘help’ desk.
Or ring us if you have a query
For further information on these meetings please contact Lynne by email at [email protected] or by
telephone on 07721 020828, or Marilyn on 02089543329.

Stanmore Bowls Club
Gerald Diamond. Hon Secretary
As we get closer to our 75th anniversary in 2017, the Club continues to thrive and attract new
members, keeping our qualified coaching team busy in the season. We were pleased to have two
members of the local Asian community join the club last season and would welcome more from
that community. We provide free coaching sessions on a one to one or one to two basis, with the
loan of all equipment, and we generally pass beginners after four sessions on our Green.
In 2014 we retained two trophies against local rivals, the Mill Hill and the Bushey Cups with a good
winning aggregate. Informal Rollups were well attended every afternoon, as well as the more
competitive club matches and competition events.
Our website continues to be a popular source of information and photographic record.
This year our Open Day is Sunday May 17th from 2.00 - 5.00pm, with entrance via the car park off
Dennis Lane, when everyone is welcome for a test bowl, refreshments, information about the Club
and the game of bowls.
We are supporting The Stanmore Society on Sunday June 7th, by opening the Club’s facilities to those enjoying their annual Fete in the Recreation Ground. At that time members will be on hand for anyone who wants to have a taster session on the green, and follow this up later with more formal coaching. Let’s all hope the sun will shine.
The Pinner Medical Centre
Lynny Kaye, Committee Member, Stanmore Society
The Stanmore Society tries to keep Members up to date with any important information of which
they become aware. Many people do not know about a facility which would enable them to get
advice and assistance with health problems on a daily basis, irrespective of Bank Holidays or
weekend closures.
The Pinner Medical Centre is a walk-in clinic and can be used by anyone living in the Borough of
Harrow. People can of course make appointments but anything of urgency can and will be dealt
with by just arriving and requesting to see a doctor or nurse. I have personally used the facility and
found it more than adequate for most medical problems. There is also an extremely good and
efficient pharmacy within the centre.
The address is 37 Love Lane Pinner HA5 3EE. Phone number 020 88665766
Opening hours are 8.00am to 7.30pm and, apart from the doctors and nurses who are always
available, they also conduct minor surgery and additionally there is an in-house cosmetic dentist.
` 7.
The Pinner medical Centre is open 365 days a year and we hope that the forgoing information will
answer any concerns members may have regarding medical services in the Harrow and district
area.
There is of course also a walk-in centre at Edgware, but I do not think you can make an
appointment there.
Stanmore Country Park
Maria Crastus, John Hollingdale, Margaret Huitson
Stanmore Country Park is a valuable local resource not only for nature conservation but for
recreational activities too. Volunteer warden John Hollingdale has spent more than two decades
keeping the park in excellent shape for us and its wildlife. His wife Margaret has also had a long
term interest in nature, and since her retirement she has been able to spend much more time
helping John at the park on a voluntary basis. More recently, conservation graduate Maria Crastus
has joined John and Margaret to help out at the park as a volunteer assistant warden. The
volunteer wardens are also ably assisted by a team of other volunteers, who do everything from
clearing litter to monitoring species such as birds and butterflies.
Stanmore Country Park has a mixture of woodland and open areas which makes it a good site for
grassland butterflies, woodpeckers and muntjac deer. A walk around the way-marked nature trail
will guarantee delights at any time of year, ranging from early blossom and bluebells spread out
across the site in spring to bubbling streams, buzzards and verdant ferns. On a clear day,
Wembley Stadium, the London Eye and the Shard are all visible on the horizon from the highest
points in the park.
Work continues to keep the paths open for people and nature, and also to link areas together to
allow butterflies and birds to thrive. Several bridges and boardwalks have been put in thanks to
funding by the Green Grid project, and there are plans to build more over the wettest parts of the
park.
The park wardens would welcome any help to keep the site tidy and wildlife friendly. If you have
some time to offer, a great way to get involved is to join one of the regular working parties. These
are organised by the Harrow Nature Conservation Forum (HNCF) and take place on one of
Stanmore’s nature sites every Wednesday. The Forum also organises guided nature walks and
other fun and educational events, for which there is no charge and no need to book. Full
timetables for all these activities can be found on the Forum’s website at
http://www.harrowncf.org/.
Please do let us know what plants or animals you see on any of the sites by tweeting the Forum at
@HarrowNCF. For more information on any aspect of Stanmore’s nature reserves or to find out
more about the HNCF’s activities, email the Forum chairman Stephen Bolsover at
